Same. Ive watched that part 20 times i reckon. I think its the sound design there. It almost sounds like the voice actor gets closer to the mic for that part. And the music is building as well. So good
Me too!! His calm demeanor means so much more to me than when they scream lmao. It really fits the feeling of him finally (well almost) accepting his own powers. This is why Yuki kajii was the perfect man for the job😂 And topping it off with dropping the title of the episode “shoto todoroki: origin” ugh perfection
I mean thats one of the only ways we humans can train physically and imagine ourselves we are anime characters while lifting weights and getting shredded sooo 😂
One of the reasons todoroki is so strong is the fact is that he can stop himself from freezing with his fire and vice verca so him refusing to use his fire is actually a hinderance
In case anybody does not know this, MHA was animated by Studio Bones, the same studio which animated many shows like Mob Psycho 100, the legendary Fullmetal Alchemist (both 2003 and 2009) and many more. The climax fight in this episode was animated by the legend Yutaka Nakamura. So of course, the animation here is incredible.
Everything Midoriya does is to save people, even though he often makes self-destructive decisions. In his head, everyone who needs help comes before him. So when he talks about having a fair fight, it's because he wanted Todoroki to be saved from his own bonds. To sum it up, Midoriya is extremely selfless, a true hero, which is the purpose of the anime that began with him narrating how he became the greatest hero of all. At this point in the anime, Todoroki is stronger than Midoriya, undeniably, even using only ice, if he was psychologically well, he would win, but in my opinion the true hero of the episode was Midoriya who started the process of self-healing from Todoroki's traumas.
Dang, watching this episode after the latest "I am Here" ep hits really different. Thank you for your reactions, they are a great refresher of how far each character has come.
I don't believe endeavour put his mom in a hospital by beating her but more like admitting her to a hospital because she was mentally unwell. That's what I took from it.
"cementoss don't be enemy now, let me watch the whole thing" while cementoss was trying to save everyone 🤣🤣🤣 this is one of my favorite MHA ep, it was so epic!! And welcome to the Hellish of Todoroki's family and from what you see it's a fucked up one 🥰 can't wait for you to see more of them, love your reaction guys!!
Something that people used to forget about Midoriya is that he has the disadvantage that he had to rush the learning process to use his powers and the rest of characters had they entire childhood and more to learn how to use their quirks. For me that makes him even more impressive.
Todoroki may be the MVP but the real hero of the episode was Deku 💚 although knowing his kindness he wouldn’t put it against you guys going for Todoroki
Rei isn't directly put into a hospital because of the physical abuse, but the on-going physical and emotional abuse she recieves from Endeavor severely traumatizes her to the point of having a psychotic break (severe PTSD does that to people) and accidentally harms her son.
A psychotic break or a psychosis is not the same as being a psycho. It happens when a person loses touch with reality due to a decline in their mental well-being. People with PTSD often experience it.
That being said, yes, she's not fit to be a mom at that time. She harms her son, she's a danger to herself and her children, but let's not forget who puts her into that condition in the first place. Compared to Endeavor who marries with the sole purpose of creating eugenic kids, throws aside his son after he no longer serves his purpose, can't let go of his obsession despite giving up right away on supporting his son, coerces his wife into having more babies, neglects his other kids, beats his wife, beats his son and isolates him, etc, Rei's mistakes are A LOT more redeemable than him.
@@kimj7645 In a real world environment it would not be up to us to forgive her, but to the victim, her son. And to herself, once she is ready. She is in the hospital to heal, after all.
Alot of lines miss the impact with less said or lost in translation in the Sub. That's why I love the ENG Dub more. The voice actors are top notch for both sub & dub. Not trying to start the tired old debate here! 😂 For example, I love the ENG Dub of Deku's opinion of Todoroki in this episode. Deku: "It's not just that his quirk is powerful. His judgement, mobility, reasoning; All of his abilities are...incredible."
11:20 - 11:47 Yutaka Nakamura animated this scene. If you notice this style in later episodes it's most likely him. (please watch the mha movies, they are amazing, he also worked on them). great video :)
the lesson that you're your own person even when it comes to the things you may have inherited and also the relationship between quirks and psychology and who people are is a very important theme. The importance of Deku emphasizing that for Todoroki's sake even if it fucks Deku over really can't be overstated.
And the wholesome friendship starts here. Seriously, Deku is like an angel sent to Shoto. Dude has no fear, he will be eliminated but he doesn't care, he wants to save Shoto, that's all he cares about. I would die for this kind of friend.
Midoriya's greatest power is the way he pushes his classmates to be better. Sometimes he does it unintentionally! That's the type of person you want to have around you.
I don't get Ange is pushing the narrative that Shoto is angry at All Might when he witnessed Shoto interrogate villains to get info about how they plan to kill All Might and eventually save All Might in season 1. 😂
Well he just said there might be some resentment there. Shoto would probably try to save his Dad too, he is a hero after all. But yeah, seeing little Shoto idolising All Might should dispel that.
The fact that Todoroki actually "thanks" deku, i think that makes deku the hero of the day. Deku saw a friend suffering and couldnt just stand there. If todoroki didnt use his fire, Deku probably wouldve won since todoroki was already getting slowed down by his own ice. The fact deku was getting close enough to land hits means if deku had hit him with 100% of one for all, its over.
Not tryna defend Endeavor at all, he has been a monumental asshole, but him putting Rei in that mental facility probably kept her out of prison. In the end, she did pour boiling water on Shoto's face, permanently scarring him. While that may or may not be UNDERSTANDABLE, it certainly isn't EXCUSABLE. Ofc, Endeavor should himself be in prison for the 2 instances of abuse we see him commit. But just analyzing Rei's part, so yeah
and it's also isolated her from him what is a great thing to not get her even more spiraled in the breakdown. nothing great about sitting lonely away of your kids in the hospital but it was a prestigious place so i believe no patient abuse (doctors didn't even allowed enji and her saw each other in care for her) and if i understood correctly kids were allowed to visit her it's just shoto was hesitant and maybe required to inform dad bc he is still fucked-up-overprotective but when shoto decided he wanted to visit nothing was an inconvenience. so i believe this did WONDERS to her mental state considering how bad it was at the moment (and wouldn't be any better or calmer till number one stuff. and when it would it'll still wouldn't be enough to truly stable her)
Yes, we were waiting for 10. And it is one of my most favourite episodes of the entire series. When i saw it for the first time i lost my sh*t. Glad you guys liked it as well!
I'm waiting for the episode where this song starts playing and they interrupt it mid-way for a dramatic twist and betrayal to the audiences expectations.
One of many peak episodes! I just love how Deku is just wanting to save everyone else, All Might see's it clear as day. All the other pro hero's are questioning his methods though because his poor body is not holding up well meanwhile Todoroki is thanking him for showing him he can be his own person, a hero who can use both sides of his body to help others and proceeds to send our boy flying into the wall... No one said being a hero was easy Deku.
Shoto’s coming to accept his power as his own, and I couldn’t be prouder. Also the fact that Endeavor was allowed to get away with any of the horrible things he’s done really says a lot about hero society.
I think you're little confused on the MVP discussion. As Deku said, Todoroki never actually got a good hit on Deku. All his damage was self-inflicted. Even the final attack was deflected by Cementoss. Todoroki "won," but didn't really "beat" Deku neither physically nor mentally. MVP was clearly Deku. No question.
I just realized... Todoroki is using fire and ice at the same time in this episode, but later there is almost an entire arc of him figuring out how to use them at the same time. Thats an inconsistency 😂
"you haven't put a single scratch on me yet" Unused phrases (probably): "I did this to myself and I can get it worse" "Keep fighting and this will be uglier to me!" "Do not test the limit of my masochism"
One of the best episodes of the early seasons. Todoroki’s tragic backstory gets some light shed on it and it really showcases how amazing Deku is at motivating people. Also the soundtrack goes hard af and you can really hear some Eren Jeager come through the voice acting lol I love it. Oh yeah Ange please cover You Say Run! That song has been at the top of my Spotify for so long lol. Maybe you can get a drummer also??👀
Imo the MVP is clearly Deku. He literally fixed a dude's life. If Deku never did this, Todaroki would probably live the rest of his life obsessed with his dad and only using half his potential. Saying that Deku doesn't deserve 100% of the credit is true, but you can always say that their previous experiences contribute to their current state. Should every time Deku does something amazing with his quirk we say "yeah, but the quirk came from All Might". While all that is true, I think it is pretty pointless bringing it up. Same with bringing up that Todaroki needed things in his past to resonate with what Deku was saying.
Ahaha guys your not the first ones to think that endeavor had beaten his wife so bad to the point of hospitalization... But he's still the number 2 hero.. even though his an abusive trash father and husband(and to a certain degree physically abusive aswell) he can't beat his wife so bad she would need hospitalisation otherwise he wouldn't be the number 2 no longer. He just put her in a psychiatric ward.
"put you in a hospital" is an allusion to physically injuring someone, in English. Considering that was Endeavour's exact wording, it is a reasonable interpretation to make, even if it makes less sense in a world/legal way.
Its funny (in a sad way) that physical abuse is a no no, but being such a abuser that she needs to be put in the hospital for PTSD is fine. Though even I who considers psychological abuse just as bad, am bias and would think worst of him if he just beat her up. Weird how our brain works.
8:56 maybe u realized it later but no, the ice is because his body temperature is getting lower from using his ice powers. When ice appears on his body itself it's a bad thing, pretty sure they explained this in this or one of the previous episodes. Making the entire point that if he used his fire too, he could constantly melt all the ice and fight non-stop
I just realized after all this time that everyone in the audience should be dead after Cementoss stepped in. Hundreds of giant chunks of cement flung at light speed all into the audience lmao
I think Todoroki's mother burning him was more of like a manic breakdown moment, not only was she suffering with those thoughts, but she also got caught saying it, probably freaked her out all at once. Not a great excuse, but people make serious mistakes under serious stress.
You really should do a cover of 'You Say Run', Ange! It's the song playing at the climax of that fight. One of the best tracks in the MHA OST for sure.
18:44 Deku didn't remind todoroki of All Might's words, he reminded todoroki of HIS MOM's words, that she says after what all might said on tv, she said "It's okay for you to become who you wanna become". Also, he reminded him that fire was HIS OWN power, not his father's. Everyone is giving it their 100% to achieve their dreams, so he should also give his all to becoming a great hero, that means using ALL his power, ice AND fire.
Also, besides the climax of course, I think my favorite part of this fight is the actual demon time that Deku is on during it when he starts realizing Todoroki's limits with his ice. His eyes and face when he surprised everyone using his broken fingers to do more flicks, and when he used his thumb and cheek. Just perfection. One of the best Deku moments in the entire series even to the current season if I'm being honest. He looked like he was legit going crazy for a moment there.
the "my hero" decision of this episode is truly a bloodbath. on one hand, you have midoriya literally doing a therapy session in the middle of a battle. he stole talk no jutsu from other anime and used it like it was his power. on the other hand, if todoroki as a person isn't self-reflective and willing to look into himself and heal, those things that midoriya said would just bounce off of him. but either way, these boys are amazing and i'm so proud of them both

When ice appears on his body itself it's a bad thing, pretty sure they explained this in this or one of the previous episodes. Making the entire point that if he used his fire too, he could constantly melt all the ice and fight non-stop
Yesss we finally got to this episode! Been excited ever since i saw the first MHA ep notif, literally the episode that got me to watch MHA! 😃
This is actual peak from MHA right here 😭🔥🔥 lmao at the argument getting heated at the end 😂
I just realized after all this time that everyone in the audience should be dead after Cementoss stepped in. Hundreds of giant chunks of cement flung at light speed all into the audience lmao
His mom was just traumatised for too many years
“I AM HERE” 🥲😭
I think Todoroki's mother burning him was more of like a manic breakdown moment, not only was she suffering with those thoughts, but she also got caught saying it, probably freaked her out all at once. Not a great excuse, but people make serious mistakes under serious stress.
2:16 "OH NO" IS RIGHT 🤣
Todoroki's backstory is so dang interesting in this show.
You really should do a cover of 'You Say Run', Ange! It's the song playing at the climax of that fight. One of the best tracks in the MHA OST for sure.
Thanks for this, love you guys ❤
If caaly(Carly😅) thinks this was "peak 🔥" then i would also point them to episode 88, 144, 146 and 157
One of my fav episodes of the whole myh series
18:44 Deku didn't remind todoroki of All Might's words, he reminded todoroki of HIS MOM's words, that she says after what all might said on tv, she said "It's okay for you to become who you wanna become".
Also, he reminded him that fire was HIS OWN power, not his father's. Everyone is giving it their 100% to achieve their dreams, so he should also give his all to becoming a great hero, that means using ALL his power, ice AND fire.
This episode is still to this day one the best of the entire show
I have been waiting to see ur reaction to this episode since u guys started watching mha
I was counting the days 😂
FINALLYYYYY❤❤
Also, besides the climax of course, I think my favorite part of this fight is the actual demon time that Deku is on during it when he starts realizing Todoroki's limits with his ice. His eyes and face when he surprised everyone using his broken fingers to do more flicks, and when he used his thumb and cheek. Just perfection. One of the best Deku moments in the entire series even to the current season if I'm being honest. He looked like he was legit going crazy for a moment there.
SHOOOOTOOOOOOO 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 FIRST OF MANYYYY
the "my hero" decision of this episode is truly a bloodbath. on one hand, you have midoriya literally doing a therapy session in the middle of a battle. he stole talk no jutsu from other anime and used it like it was his power. on the other hand, if todoroki as a person isn't self-reflective and willing to look into himself and heal, those things that midoriya said would just bounce off of him. but either way, these boys are amazing and i'm so proud of them both
Such a hype moment
