    Excellent comparisons. I've worked with both Blackmagic (w/BMPCC4K) and LUMIX. I'm actually expecting my S5ii to arrive in a few days. And I plan on getting the upgrade so I can shoot BRAW externally. This video makes me happy, especially since I picked up the S5ii for $1,350. Thank you.

    If BM had autofocus it would be a no brainer. But the Lumix just covers sooooo many features i need.

      Best comparison that u saw, Thanks ! I bought the Lumix S5IIX, I was surprised how good it is. Specially the stabilization & low light is + good AF. I also have a Lumix S1. I like the L-Mount Alliance. I heard that Blackmagic will make a L-Mount Fulframe Camera. If it's affordable that would be my next Camera.

    I've got the Ursa G2, Pocket 6k pro and Lumix S5 II. The lumix is definitely a bit more "digital looking" but the image is still fantastic. The camera is so versatile, the IBIS always blows me away, its the perfect camera for shooting events and travel. The colours are quite neutral and the codec quite versatile so pretty easy to match with other cameras with some grading. Ive matched it to blackmagics and Sony fx6 fairly well.

    Thanks for your advice. I have a Panasonic GH6 and was thinking about getting the Blackmagic Pocket, but after watching your review, I can see it definitely doesn't fit my needs, for TH-cam, traveling, and shooting by myself. Plus, the battery life seems like a real problem, along with the large size of the camera. You saved me some money! By the way, I liked your dog in the background.

      I have the gh6 and pocket 6k pro. They’re both fantastic in different ways. BRAW is so nice because if for some reason I don’t nail exposure, I’ve got a ton of options. With the gh6, if I don’t nail exposure or white balance, then I’m in trouble.

    Does the dynamic range on the LUMIX look a bit more HLG-like to you as well? Maybe it’s designed to preserve colour in overexposed areas?
    I think the BM is great because it’s a film optimised camera. The menu system is easy and convenient for film making. And shooting both BRAW or ProRes with your own LUT in camera is a workflow optimiser for my studio work. There are so many photo related menu options in DSLR cameras, making it a jungle sometimes. And that yellow cast on the LUMIX is bringing back memories of shooting GH5, that I did for years. Had to work pretty hard to steering away from that cast, which was also making it challenging to catch subtle nuances in skin tones. Where as on the BM it was easy to differentiate skin tones from different nuances of wood for instance.

    • @OBP_
      @OBP_  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wel desaturated highlights is somthong we see in alot of film stock. So it makes sense that blackmagic lean into that. My brian out the blackmagic on a shelf of cinematic / film look and puts the lumix on a shelf of a more modern look. Right tool for the right job!

  • @Aviciiz
    @Aviciiz ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I've been saying for years that Lumix has some of the most underrated colours out there. We all know BM has excellent colours but everyone forgets Lumix. Probably because V-log L on the GH series wasn't that pleasing. The S5iiX apparently now has the highlight recovery feature in BRAW which gives you almost another stop in DR

    Thanks for a comprehensive comparison. I do find prefer the blackmagic image in almost every case, but ultimately there are a lot of people that would really benefit from a much more versatile camera. I currently have a Canon C70 and a Lumix S1. The images are surprisingly close. The C70 is a step up in price but it is about as close as it gets to the S5ii and BMPCC6K having a baby! Ha

    • @OBP_
      @OBP_  ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you say that because the C70 was the camera I wanted to get as I was thinking could share lenses with my BM cameras being EF mount. But ultimately end up moving on because of the price, if think the C70 with a 30% price cut will be one of the best cameras out.

    Considering the practically the same colors that you can adjust a bit in Davinci Resolve, I think the Panasonic does a very good job!
    After seeing this test I'm going to order this Panasonic S5iix ;-)
    If you then consider all the other advantages, longer battery life, full frame, excellent stabilization and all this in a small camera, then I think you definitely make a good choice with the S5ii.

    I prefer the Blackmagic's imagery. However, I will pick the Lumix because its imagery is highly acceptable with one of the most important feature for me: a good AF system. If Blackmagic ever gives us a usable AF pocket camera, that would be a dream comes true to me.

    The Black Magic is my workhorse but I just picked up an S5iiX today and am really conflicted. I'm tempted to return it after seeing how massive the bitrates are compared to the BM. That, and the S5iiX almost bricked my T7 SSD. I think I'll give it a second chance, but I appreciate the video. Very relevant.

  • @jayclas4023

    Between 12:22 and 13:26, it appears that the darker image had better color separation making the darker S5ii look better at 12:22 but at 13:18 the darker Black Magic looked better.
    It seem more about not blowing out the colors because the image is too bright.

  • @luvidfilm4269

    Great vid!
    Things I love with the BMPCC 6K
    - The big fold out screen (no need for extra monitor+battery+cables) soo nice.
    - The EVF, fantastic for sunny outdoor shoots + extra stabilization with 3rd point of contact.
    - 2 xlr mini connections for a industry standard shotgun mic and wireless lav.
    -The big and simple menue system.
    Things I love with the S5ii
    -IBIS, but rarely boost IS, it can get really weird.
    -AF I don't really love but appreciate. Better than nothing, but I can't really depend on it, yet. Even for stills, the camera can't handle hard back light, I have lost many portraits with bright sky and fill-flash..:-/
    -The colours and the compact form factor.
    -Full frame, especially for stills, and certain filming situations where you need that exert boké.
    -Also I like the smaller file size.

    Excellent review, and as a previous BMPCC6K user, actual S5 user and future S5II X owner… I do agree on every point!
    What i do miss from the BMD :
    1- One-click "Press-Hold-Release" custom WB (every camera should do that)
    2 - Hard to change Shutter Angle by mistake (unlike the Lumix.. arghhh just add a freaking Shutter Angle ONLY Lock option already!!!)
    3 - The 5” 1080p screen (mainly the size aspect.. still highly prefer a fully articulated screen)
    4 - Internal BRAW
    5 - The MENU 😚👌🏻
    What I highly prefer on the S5II X :
    Everything else…

      @@JerimiahCook Lumix WB doesn’t work the same.. You have to press the WB button, navigate to the preset slot you want to use and press UP just to bring the target, press enter to take the snapshot, and if I remember correctly, you also need to push the WB button again to go out of the WB menu (or press the back button). With the BMD, you simply Press n Hold to bring the target, then when you release it, it takes the snapshot, applies it and goes back to the liveview, ready to record. Literaly one-click. This is how it should work with the Lumix. The WB button press n hold function (if there is one) isn’t actually assigned to anything at the moment, so it would be an easy firmware update addon.

But, I'd say without really using the same type of lens and/or assuming two lenses would be the same (as they are from the same manufacturer), it is impossible to come to a valid conclusion between two cameras. I’ve been shooting BM video for a while now and have no complaints when there’s time and/or crew to manage manual focus. The Resolve Color Managed workflow usually saves loads of time. However I’m needing to push myself into some content creation (prefer to stay behind the camera but that doesn’t stand up these days) and need to make some camera decisions. I shoot Nikon Z9 for stills. Great glass, powerful sensor and headline video features, but it’s a hunk of junk in terms of having *real* video features. The Nikon fans ooh and aah over the 8k RAW but none of them know the convenience of something as simple as shutter angles, and it could be years before Nikon figures out what open gate means! So I appreciate your perspective on the S5II (though I think I will get the x). I’m not thrilled with the slo-mo cropping, but something had to give in order to keep the camera in the $2k neighborhood. Yet I haven’t seen anything from you yet about the lenses. What are your thoughts? The general consensus out there isn’t bad but I’m curious about your perspective as someone who understands cinematography. Thanks!

    • @OBP_
      @OBP_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree with the video feature stuff and think Lumix are underrated for how much they try and meet the needs of video shooters, although missing false color is strange one, when you like the likes of shutter angle and waveforms. Regarding the lenses I would say they fit right in line all the newer made for mirrorless stuff (like what canon & Sony have been doing). I have been shooting on mainly the Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm & Sigma Art 24-70mm. my fav is defo the 16-35 as when you move to slow motion with the crop its a much more useable range, but both lenses are sharp and great.

    My biggest question about the S5II and S5IIx-and the one no one ever bothers to talk about-is *audio*. How’s the internal preamp? How much self noise? And, what are my options in terms of external timecode? I don’t see a manual up for the X yet, but looking through the materials online for the S5II I only see internal timecode and timecode out via HDMI, which does me no good if I’m trying to work with say a Tentacle Track-e rather than trying to film with a Rode Wireless Go or similar device. Is there a work around to jam timecode or to connect an external device and have the timecode embed in the video file? Hopefully I’ve overlooked something in the specs sheets, but would like to clear this up before I drop any money on one of these cameras. Missing timecode support is not a minor issue to me. @@OBP_ I tend to use my S1 for music videos and my Pocket 4k for film stuff but I also turn on internal sharpness on my Pocket 4k because the codecs on the Panasonic cameras have internal sharpening that you really can’t turn off.
      We are comparing jpeg video they great processed on camera. Things like noise reduction, sharpening and saturation all process the image with Panasonic vs recording.
      One is made to be processed in post and the other gets you most of the way there like Canon cameras.
      Audio can be recorded the same way but that doesn’t make recording everything flat then mixing in post production totally different from printing the effects as you record them.
      The end result will have the end user experiencing the final product. There’s absolutely no difference and I could use either camera for a music video or film.
      They both record images not one clean the kitchen sink and the other dry cloths😆
