Really great update and review of this. Also I like how you do what you can to NOT to spend a fortune on your GX when you add stuff to it. If you do another update on the Tesla screen could you just add a small part in it with the climate control buttons on the side? Trying to convince my other half and she asked about those.
Yep. Super simple. There's a button for auto and then you can temp up and down for driver and a sep one for the passenger. It's nice to have hardware buttons for those.

Thanks for the update. I installed the same PX6 on my 04 Lexus GX. Fantastic results and thanks for the inspiration. Phoenix so far has terrible customer service and haven't been able to connect with anyone over the last several weeks and multiple attempts via phone and email. Did you need to install a separate backup camera or able to use the existing one? Thanks for the help.
Update on this please? What solution did you end up going with? I am finding out there are 2 apparently. 1. Go with an aftermarket one they sell or 2. splice the harness and do some shenanigans they have instructions to on their website to make it work (which looks a whole lot of work and potential for disaster is you're not good with that sort of thing). Would love to hear what you ended up doing! Thanks!

How does navigation work on there. Do you need to sync your phone up? Or is there a default app you use that allow turn by turn direction? Also, like any other android or tech, do you see this lagging in the future to a point where it needs to be replaced? Hate to replace this like we replace our phones now.
I use everything off of CarPlay on my phone. Every once in a while I’ll use Google maps or a program called Gaia right on the unit because they are great for off roading because you can download maps off-line. Technically, faster processors with more ram will come out but that doesn’t mean you need to upgrade. Most GX owners are using the original software that came with their navigation that is now 15 years old. It still works but it is not as good as the current stuff. Most of them feel no need to upgrade. I hope that makes sense.
so does the roll and pitch angles, along with the rpm and gauge suite work plug and play?? also i use the iphone so i wanted to ask from someone that has experience with this phoenix headunit... but does this work seamlessly with the iphone? and would things like the integrated backup camera, and dvd player and would features like xm radio and navigation work with this headunit? i saw some older videos i guess of issues getting the reverse camera to work, and also the gauges and pitch roll gauges werent able to work or pickup any readings... is this issue fixed now? was it just a firmware issue? and final question i promise, would this be an upgrade you would recommend to install on my 2008 gx 470? thanks soo much for your answers and advice in advance i truly appreciate it... thanks -peter
Hey Peter. No worries about all the questions. That’s why I make the videos. Hope they are helpful. The pitch and roll angles work great but the RPM does not. I used the aftermarket backup camera because the original one was blocked by my rear tire carrier. Our kids have iPads so we never use the DVD player. I use CarPlay with my iPhone so I never use XM radio. Navigation works great either through CarPlay or with an app native on the device like Google maps or Waze. I use on X off-road when we are over landing all the time and it works great. After getting the custom firmware, it feels rocksolid.
Couple questions.... I have the RSE system and I haven't seen anybody really address how the two integrate, if at all. I was also wondering if the CD changer is still integrated and what the actual sound quality is like. Any chance you can answer some of those questions, I would be very appreciative.
I could be wrong but I do not believe the rear entertainment system works anymore. Honestly, we never tested it because our kids use phones or tablets when we are on road trips. We don’t use the CD changer because we stream all of our music either off of the head unit itself or off of a phone with unlimited music instead of six CDs.
Thanks for all the great information!! I installed my new unit yesterday Android 9.0 4gb ram 64 rom. My settings screen is setup totally different. I played around in the advanced setting menu, not all of my digital climate controls work(some do work). The driver and passenger climate digital numbers do not show at all.... like yours? If i go with the software upgrade will it update the canbus for the climate controls to work?
Do none of these have the ability to add a SIM card so that we can be web connected w/o a hot spot being active? My GX 470 came with a 9" Joying head unit (not a fan) it has the SIM card capability.
Do you find the screen too bright for night driving? Does it have an auto dimmer like the manufacturer NAV screen. Also what was the facebook group you referenced to help with install. The trim panels on the sides on mine are already cracked from previous mechaninc work I am certain I will break them if I try to repair but just not sure where to get a cheap replacement if I do. Would anyone know how the sound quality is with this unit,Or dose any one have an aftermarket amp with sub wit this unit and if so how is the sound quality. I’m not to worried about boot time and other stuff as long as it works and doesn’t sound like an 90’s Walmart tape player I’ll pull the trigger on buying it.
Ha! Valid. It probably takes about 30 seconds for it to boot up and connect to my phone from a cold start. I haven’t hooked into my factory stereo and I think it sounds pretty good. I know there are guys that run external amps and speakers. After I bought this one, they came out with a unit that is called fast boot that boots up super fast if your car has not been turned off for more than a few hours. Think about shutting your tablet down completely or just turning off the screen.
I have a 2008 GX 470 and they are trying to install the android vertical radio like yours but they keep having an issue with the air controls. Did you have this issue? I guess they can’t control the side air vents when they install the radio
I never had that issue. Where did you order the unit from? I know with Phoenix automotive, they had to send out some new harnesses for some people that we’re having HVAC issues

I'm still having problems getting my backup camera to work with Phoenix firmware. I installed a Kenwood CMOS -320. Phoenix just sent my a replacement unit. I can get the camera to display through the app but currently, with the car set to "02-09 Pardo High DI" the back up camera does not get triggered so nothing changes when I put it into reverse. I did change the setting to GX 13 and reverse did triggered the camera and I got a picture. That didn't happen with the unit I returned. I asked Phoenix to check with their engineer in China about a firmware fix. I'd be very interested in the firmware from Sergey if every thing works after the update. I'm not a hacker and find it painful to trouble shot software issues - especially with Phoenix with ZERO documentation on settings.

Depends on the issues. As long as they're software and not hardware. I'd contact the developer I have linked in the description. He's been able to fix all my issues. It's practically perfect now. Feels great.
They work great. Honestly, I cannot remember what the stock buttons felt like but with this, I usually just set it to auto and set the temperature up and down.

I believe that the next update will enable over the air updates. Right now they are manual. Plug a USB drive in and it starts. Not bad but over the air is even better.

Great! I used a new one because my old one was obstructed by my rear tire carrier. The unit came with one that I installed.

I believe so. I heard of some people using a 3G USB stick. I personally bought the T-Mobile hotspot that plugs into your OBD port. It’s been flawless.

The major downside to these radios is the response time, load time and processor speed. All of which make them slow and sluggish.

8.1. Wired. I don’t see the benefit of wireless. I’d like to keep my iPhone charged anyways.

I don’t think so. We never use the flip down screen anymore.

It was a little tricky at first but it was because they sent me the wrong transponder.

I believe that the next update will enable over the air updates. Right now they are manual. Plug a USB drive in and it starts. Not bad but over the air is even better.
