Ive been modeling the drawers system I’m building for my 4th gen 4Runner off of your setup. Ive got to figure out how I’m going to tie it into the floor because I dont have an easy spot like the GX has to screw into the floor. Probably gonna have to drill a hole at some point... I really appreciate you posting this up with the link to the drawer slides and your process. As someone who hadn’t used a circular saw prior to this, it has been a great guide.
Sweet! My only concern is the fridge tilt. You really don't want to tilt refrigerators and AC units as you can contaminate the system and or starve the compressor of oil and burn it out. I would re-arrange and put the fridge lower in the vehicle. Anything to extend the life of a $7-800 appliance. I do like the swing out with the spare tire. I am currently putting mine on a diet and taking out all the old third row seat hardware and entertainment systems. The goal is to be as close to the factory weight as possible before pack out. "Dry weight" I guess you could say. Great job on providing the links!
Never had an issue with our Dometic and tilt-slide. Its never running beyond 35 degrees, so oiling should not be an issue. If we were running it on its side, that would be bad. Or if we rolled the truck, but that would be a whole other set of bigger issues. I'm always torn by the weight issue. It is top heavy with the tent, and causes me to avoid some extreme terrain I'd tackle in my Raptor- wide and relatively low center of gravity.
super cool. just sold my Jeep TJ so to buy a '06 gx470. I had a homemade drawer system in the Jeep that I was really proud of. I'm excited to make some storage solution for my GX. This is great inspiration.
Getting that video edited and up is on my long to-do list! Drawer is built using hardwood plywood, assembled with glue and pocket screws. Fulterer drawer slides purchase link in the description above.
@@TRAILPOWERWould love to see a detailed video of the platform built and drawer. I know you have shown a bit of the platform assembly in this video, but with dimensions and how to anchor to the vehicle would be great. I have a GX470 and would love to build the same platform and drawer set up as yours. Thank you in advance!
Can I ask what MPG you are getting when loaded and doing a trip? Thats my main concern. I like the platform but a few years from now when I have experience (and serious money put into my platform) id like to take it to other countries where you might be long periods without gas. 4xoverland did a trip in oregon and he said he only got 10MPG and in his view disqualified the car from being a true overlander since when not in the US you will sometimes be very far from fuel.........
Actually better yet. The MPG has lead my down the rabbithole of payload. I feel like theres zero chance you arent at least 400lbs over payload if not more. No concerns there? I feel the GX is basically impossible to have a real overland build without being 30-40% over payload
@@csgofordummies1239 I haven't weighed our GX, but it certainly isn't light with full steel skid plates. It's built for 7 passengers, and we only have two, so that helps. And, payload is also largely tied to suspension. Our suspension is fully-custom with Fox and Icon, so factory payload numbers aren't exactly relevant.
A lot of GX drivers rely on the factory MPG readout for calculating fuel consumption. That's fine if you're running stock tires. If you're running 33's like we are, the MPG and speedometer are not accurate. OEM tires: 265/65/17 (660 revs/mile. Our tires: 285/70/17 (617 revs/mile). 7% faster, and 7% more miles covered than the GX thinks it has covered. Our GX MPG readout averages around 12.6-13.2 depending on the terrain. Multiplied by 1.07, we're right around 14MPG with rooftop tent, and fully-loaded.
Nice and simple. I think the GX470 is the same as the Toyota Prado here in Australia which is a vehicle that I’m looking at so nice to see what you have done. Out of interest is your a diesel or gasoline, and what size fuel tank is fitted?
For me it seems the fridge system just takes up too much room. I've done some 4-5 day hikes without refridgeration. Trying to weigh what a smaller system would do for efficiency.
This is a bigger fridge than most need. I went with a 65L because I was dual-purposing it. For the trail, and also as an emergency backup at home if the grid goes down.
What size screws did you to hold your cabinets down to your factory anchor points? I pulled mine out and they appear to be an tapered thread - did you run a tap through them. Also, nice build. Ironically, mine is rounding out a lot like yours.
I run ICON Overland coils on the back, which are a heavier coil. Very happy with them, combined with the FOX shocks. I replaced the factory airbags before installing the storage system, so I don't know how it would do with the factory setup. I suspect it would be fine, because you're removing the weight of the rear jump seats, compressor, etc.
Interested in building up a vehicle. I like the GX a lot. Just subscribed and I’m looking forward to watching your build series. Going to go over to IG and follow after video
Thanks, Jay! I would estimate 75 pounds and around $600 including 6 cub packs and electrical. Not including water tank and cargo barrier. Around $1200 for everything including tank, barrier, lighting, and drop-down table.
Icon Delta Joint upper control arms, Fox 3.0 fully adjustable shocks at all four corners, air bag delete in the back, Icon Overland rear springs, metaltech4x4 upper and lower rear links, and Toyota spring isolators. Tires- BFG KO2s in 285/70/17 on 17” Black Rhinos with a -25 offset pushing the wheels out an inch.
@@yuriabmxr That was the dimension the Black Rhinos were available in. I do like them visually pushed out a bit wider with the -25. I did do a mild body mount chop. I do get a bit of rubbing at full lock full compression. I may do a bit more agressive chop at some point.
Javier Velazquez maxtraxx are mounted to the fuel carrier cage. Two Bolts with lock washers & nuts. Holes drilled in maxtrax and threaded knobs tighten onto bolts locking boards in place.
@@TRAILPOWER i have the same bumper, could you reply a close up pic on how the maxtrax are connected to the metal tech jerry can holder... they seem kinda flimsy with all the fancy cut outs
@@needle_dropper Not possible to post photos in replies, but you can see some photos of the back end on instagram. If you place the bolts near the corners of the cage, it is plenty-strong.
Huh. Interesting. I never realized it was a waste to have fresh fruit, steaks, cold drinks and Hagen Dazs bars 200 miles from nowhere, without all of our food swimming in a cooler full of ice water tinged with whatever leaked. And, having it powered completely by the Sun makes camping a joy. All of our gear and food for easily fits in the rear and RTT while still leaving the back seat completely open for passengers.
Good eye! when fully-loaded, the weight of the fridge does put a slight bow in the full-width top deck. I used the hardwood ¾" ply from my local Home Depot. At some point I'll remake the top deck using high-grade Baltic Birch. No voids, more plys, and much more rigid.
@@TRAILPOWER gotcha, I was thinking about something similar but adding a plywood verticle center brace to help hold the weight, make two drawers instead of one big one. What do you think?
@@TRAILPOWER yah, that makes sense. I've gotten my camper into some remote areas (w my GX), but that's partly due to a spring over axle conversion to givw me a lil more lift. More most overlanding, you can't beat a camper. If you want to rough it and it's just you and the sig other or a friend, the car is th3 way to go.

Very very nice build. Do you have the 3d model of your empty trunk by any chance?
Sorry, no.
You should check out orange boxx fab for the rear door table. If u haven’t seen it yet.
Orange boxx is great. Super-well-built. Too large to work with our fridge setup, so the FrontRunner was a better option in our case.
Very nicely done.

Do you build and sell the main wooden storage unit?
I would definitely be interested in getting one.
I do not build and sell these. Maybe down the road. Thanks for the interest.

Good question- Its been long enough that I don't recall what I used. I didn't change any threads, so I either used the OEM bolts, or found a match.
