- The Sahara is the biggest desert on earth. It takes its name from the Arab word for "emptiness". In the dead heart of that emptiness there's a place called the Tenere. The Tenere takes its name from the Tuareg word for "nothing". A nothing the size of France in the middle of an emptiness the size of the United States. It's no wonder the locals call this place "The Land Of Fear”. David Adams retraces the trade routes of the people who call this stove-hot corner of the planet home.

The camel is such an underrated creation. Just a blessing of a beast. There is no other creation that comes close to its endurance. A vehicle for trans Sahara e-commerce for thousands of years.

Beautiful documentary. This is the route I exactly followed in January 1991. By far the most extraordinary trip I ever did. And I had the chance to meet with Mano Dayak, the most famous Tuareg who tried to defend his people and culture and who unfortunately died in 1995.

The Tuareg are incredible people. The likes of you and i would not last much more than a day in that desert. It has a very alluring...but deadly beauty about it.
I mean, you could say that about any people. The tuareg would not last a day in somewhere like Norway, either.. People adapt and learn how to live in their particular climate zones.
@@SoloTravelerOffTheBeatenPath I think that's a fair comment. The tuareg have adapted to their environment extremely well..as have Norwegian people to theirs. Neither would probably do very well if they swapped environments. I dont cope with heat or cold very well so i'm screwed either way 😉

Are you sure? Like it seems like at every turn he's bashing on them for being "primitive" or "violent". He seems like he's being passive aggressive and stereotyping. Like the way people live is dependent on so many factors. You can't call anyone primitive, just different.

I have a slight obsession with desert peoples (both hot and cold deserts). It amazes me that they not only survive in the most inhospitable environments, but also manage to produce beautiful objects (e.g. camel bags, jewellery).

Very beautifully narrated video. I was there in 1984 with my wife, three children under five and a Land Rover. We had no back-up other than 200 litres of diesel and 120 litres of water. We had our adventures and congratulate you on yours. We still have our Agadez crosses from the local silversmiths and our memories.

Amazing documentary I’m from Algeria and Touareg are actually my people, they’re very brave generous and knowledgeable, look at that guide I believe he never went to school but he speaks English, I live in the USA now and I see people from around the world don’t speak English as he does

Really enjoying this, it's like an old fashioned adventure novel or something. Most other documentaries made about African countries tend to only focus on how miserable they are.

The "Golden Rule" tells a lot about a person's character, strong men are good examples (not meaning in physical strength) :-) watch those families where females and animals bloom, bc they are respected, and loved. Very educative and informative, i enjoyed every piece of it.
Though my country Nigeria shared boarder with Niger Republic (about 200km from my home state Sokoto) but this is the first time I'm seeing desert, and the tuareg culture.

Toureg people they are part of the great berber people the indiginous people of north africa a verry rich civilisation. acros the history they never accepted to be occupied they fighted all who trierd to do that from romans to frenchs. berber people they were all the time there intel arabs come from the east, and in nintyies with help of the west especialy french the arabs governed most of their land such as morocco algeria tunisia libya. and tryied to convert theme to arabs and marginalise their culture thats why most of the people in world thinks that they are arabs what is absolutly false they are the great berbers with their beutiful culture and rich languige

This was SO good! I could’ve watched a 2 hour show on this.
I spend my Saturday evenings turning up to documentaries like this.
They are truly free people, living with so little, yet happy. We have so much, yet unhappy as we sacrificed our freedom spending 40-60 hours a week at work most of us don't even like, sacrificed our right to make a decision as corrupted politicians we chose decide what is best for us. All of it so we can buy 50" TV to watch documentaries like this to learn how to live and what's the real freedom. And we are in the "Pursuit of Happiness" destroying the world with pollution and our "superior" technologies, meantime these people don't even need the maps and compasses to navigate...???

I'm with Parker on this one. I'd rather work 40 hours and come back to a relatively comfortable home than live in the hot, arid middle of the North African Sahara where it's not a given you will have something to eat or drink tomorrow.

A strangely beautiful land and amazing people. I've often wondered about people, freedom, and happiness. These people, and others around the world who exist without the modern conveniences so many take for granted, seem happier and freer than those who live with the modern conveniences. Very nice video.

My friends think I’m nuts but I identify with that place. I was raised in a high desert in Eastern Washington, USA. As a young teenager I was reluctantly moved to Seattle, a land of rain. I hated it. Finally escaping I eventually left for health to Hawaii to find it’s actually much a desert. Life brought me back but I immediately left for the Eastern Oregon high country, then Utah and Nevada. I didn’t realize why really. I just followed a feeling. I ended up traveling the Black Rock desert, the Mohave and the Sonoran all the way to Mexico before returning due to COVID closures. Seeing this stirs me to begin again, perhaps a new continent 😎. I’ve finally found myself. I love deserts.

Well Mr. Adams you’ve done it again!! I clicked on a documentary that seemed to be of no interest and you narration and storytelling sucked me in! You made a paradise out of what looked like a desert wasteland to me!! I should know never to doubt you. If you take your time and energy to put into a documentary it’s gonna turn out good and be exciting to watch!! You literally make sand fun to watch! And with the skiing part.....what can I say....you’re a true renaissance man!

Oásis abundantes, zonas onduladas, mesetas e montanhas...a paisagem do deserto é tão dissemelhante como a sua ortografia...a par do oceano de areia, com as vagas gigantes das suas dunas...Outras zonas rochosas escritas com histórias! Os contrastes das paisagens e o domínio dos Tuareg com a sua espada e os seus adorados camelos ...O tempo parou ...Como resistem a esta vida?!
