      The motions of the wheel don’t seem to correspond with any particular speed though, is it setting a particular speed, or does it accelerate like a gas pedal?

    A little bit of technical details. No train expert, so I something is wrong, feel free to correct me (or slap me on the butt). This is one of my favourite control configurations, the unofficially called "step and field". The lever on the right is controlling the train by braking it or by moving it trough various steps of speeds (step control), in fixed positions. It will be interesting to see the engine configuration. The "wheel" is the field control. With that, the driver can control the acceleration for each step, and is build as a wheel probably for fine control. If I recall correctly, the lever controls the frequency of the engine stator and is the equivalent of a car gears, while the wheel control the voltage inside each step, and is basically a throttle.
    I think the levers under the wheel are the emergency brakes (with the gauges being probably vacuum level indicators?).
    Thank you for coming to this TED Talk and feel free to add or correct.

      A few corrections:
      The wheel controls the thyristors (basically the motor speed control) as this train uses those for motor speed control.
      The big lever on the right only operates the brakes
      I think the lever underneath the wheel might be the direction control, but im not sure of that.

      Subways in Stockholm hold open doors for ca 15 seconds. Commuter trains for ca 30. It's crew activated.

    • @User-jr7vf
      @User-jr7vf ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Salpeteroxid how does the driver know everybody is onboard? does he close the doors manually? what if a passenger is still boarding the train and the driver accidentally closes the door ?

    • @Salpeteroxid
      @Salpeteroxid ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@User-jr7vf On the subway the driver has monitors (TV's) mounted on pilars on the platform but he also exits the cabin and step out on the platform and has his microphone with open and close buttons and he can see all the way (150m) to the doors furthest back.
      The commuter trains use monitors mounted in the drivers cabin. The cameras are mounted so they can see both sides, forwards and back. They are 214m long.
      Both the subway and the commuter trains use a system that detects and cuts out the doors if someone were to the pinched between them. The force of the closing doors are not enough to hurt you but they will detect obstacles. The commuter trains also have a light sensor to detect if there is someone a bit late to enter or exit.
      The door systems are very safe, they throw an error code and alert the driver if anything is wrong. There are emergency handles next to every door and the train will stop immediately or not go at all if activated.
      Safe travels =)

    The so called steering wheel works as a throttle, if you rotate it clockwise more current will be fed into the locomotive traction motors. It usually has 30-32 positions, think like the higher the position of the steering wheel (rotated clockwise) the greater the speed of the train.

    • @insertname5407
      @insertname5407 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is not a steering wheel. Its to accelerate and choose the speed at wich the train moves. It works in stages, for example, the first stage is for when the train is starting to move, the second stage is to accelerate till a certain speed, the 3 rd stage is to maintain the current speed and the rest of the stages are for accelerating faster and faster...kinda like a shifter in a car. Keep in mind that thoose stages and their possition may differ from train to train.
