A little bit of technical details. No train expert, so I something is wrong, feel free to correct me (or slap me on the butt). This is one of my favourite control configurations, the unofficially called "step and field". The lever on the right is controlling the train by braking it or by moving it trough various steps of speeds (step control), in fixed positions. It will be interesting to see the engine configuration. The "wheel" is the field control. With that, the driver can control the acceleration for each step, and is build as a wheel probably for fine control. If I recall correctly, the lever controls the frequency of the engine stator and is the equivalent of a car gears, while the wheel control the voltage inside each step, and is basically a throttle. I think the levers under the wheel are the emergency brakes (with the gauges being probably vacuum level indicators?). Thank you for coming to this TED Talk and feel free to add or correct.
