    Notice how Light screams after regaining his memories, but Misa doesn't. I believe the processing of their memories are revealed in their reactions. Light had an internal conflict, which was represented in his scream. While Misa, being straightforward, obvious in her actions, as she is, had no reason to have conflict. She admired Kira, with or without the Death Note. The difference is in their motivations.

    Light is a sociopath. His whole "disgust" over being Kira was just anger that L didn't believe him, you can see it as a facet of him not liking to lose. As we saw in episode 1 and again in episode 24, that "innocent" Light is the same guy who got straight to killing as soon as he got the chance.
    We even see in his quiet moments that he realized that Kira and him shared the same ideals. That was what, one, two episodes ago? He tries not think about it, but it shows that losing his memories doesn't change who Light is. He always willing to become Kira.

    • @jayt9608

      I have always believed that Light would be the type of cop that was secretly a serial killer. While his victimology would devolve, as it does in the show, his sophistication would grow until such a time as his narcissism caused him to follow the proverb, "Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Basically, he would eventually, like John Wayne Gacy, kill the wrong person just because he believed he could never be caught.

      In fairness, it's pretty offensive if someone accuses you of something bad and you believe you're innocent.

      @@jayt9608oooh I really like that. You're totally right. He'd probably become corrupt pretty much as soon as he got any actual power to "punish evil". It reminds me of how Walter White did everything for "family". As long as it's against "evil", Light would feel justified doing anything.

    • @AbiZoey
      @AbiZoey 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I think it's partly anger over not being believed, but he also does seem to be genuinely opposed to Kira when he thinks Kira is someone else and not him - even with realising they share some of the same ideals, he's still set on pursuing Kira and having him brought to justice. To me it's more evidence of how hypocritical he is, and that his reasoning about killing people for justice is a justification he made up after the fact, he doesn't genuinely believe it. Kira is killing all these people so Light _can't_ be Kira because he'd never do that, he's a good person who wouldn't ever commit crimes, but when it _is_ actually him in that position he thinks it's okay because it's him doing it and _he's_ killing people for the right reasons, unlike all those other criminals. Basically whatever Light is doing at that point in time is what he thinks is right - if he's not Kira then Kira is wrong, if he is Kira then Kira is right. It's all about his ego.

      @@OG-ColorfulAbyss. Every time we get to see Light's lifespan, the numbers stay the same, I believe. So the trick didn't really extend his life. Perhaps, the government was not willing to execute him for a while even if he was caught? I mean, being sentanced to execution usually takes a lengthy trial, since they have to be really sure they've got the right guy. Just because L (still a civilian) is sure and thinks the punishment should be death, doesn't mean the government will. The issue I see with Light’s plan, that I hope someone can clarify, is that Light didn’t need to give up the buried notebook and lose his memories to basically pull everything else off. He can have Hiriguchi be the cover Kira and do the Shinigami swap but not give up the buried notebook. The only thing I think it achieves is changing Light’s mannerisms and perhaps it’s a case of I can’t be convicted as Kira if I’m not Kira. But there probably wasn’t enough to convict Light anyway, especially after the killings start again whilst he’s detained and he didn’t need to forefit the buried book to achieve that.

    I think the reason L isn't so concerned with Light having the Death Note at that moment is that he just doesn't care if Light uses it. If anything, he's probably hoping to *catch* Light using it or at least interested to see his behavior while having it on him.
    Remember: L has just received information on how the Death Note works and already knows that the original Kira didn't have the ability to kill with only a face, so he at least should be safe from Light, who doesn't know his real name. L is amoral. He doesn't care about stopping Kira. He cares about catching Kira. It's a game. He wants to win.

    • @badreddinekasmi8919
      @badreddinekasmi8919 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

      That doesnt account for how careless L is to literally allow him to write a name. If L is intending to catch Light using the death note you'd think he'd be hyper aware of any little movement Light makes on top of making sure he has full visibility on him.
      And that doesn't negate the point on the idea that the sniper should be able to see the monster just in case.
      It's just so unlikely that somehow Light keeps the notebook for that long

    • @VelkanKiador
      @VelkanKiador 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      Well here is the problem with that. Highuchi's testimony would be incredibly valuable to this investigation. He has been using the death note, knows it's in and outs. And Higuchi is at the end of his rope, so likely he would be more open to reveal things Ren wouldn't. So he would be more likely to get more information out of Higuchi that will out Light than taking the risk that Light might kill Higuchi.

    • @malcolm32
      @malcolm32 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Well for one thing, the Death Note is in full view of L the entire time. I don't think he literally thinks Light plans to kill Higuchi right then and there, directly in front of him, I only meant that Light holding the Note may not be an immediate concern to L. He has no reason to suspect that taking the Note from him will stop him from killing Higuchi in some secret way without physically writing in the Note itself. It will, obviously, but there's no way for L to know that.
      Handing the Note to Watari does make sense to some degree, but I think it's entirely possible L is far too curious to let the shinigami die, IF Watari is able to kill it, and Light is currently using the names to confirm Higuchi's claims, something that actually does need to happen.

    • @badreddinekasmi8919
      @badreddinekasmi8919 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@malcolm32 I thought of the Death Note being in full view but let's be fair, Light does make shit ton of sus movements. This is just the cops letting Higuchi reach into his bag all over again.
      Additionally with L piecing together so much info back to back, and even having the confirmation from amnesiac Light himself that as Kira he would ensure the power to kill would return to him, it's really hard to argue L wouldn't be at least hyper aware of the possibility that Light could be plotting something. Especially in the very tight situation Light is in, where Higuchi, someone that could possibly have incriminating info about Light, is being detained to be interrogated. And Light having very obviously regained his memories. Higuchi HAS to die sometime between that moment and before arriving at HQ. And that is something that imo L wouldn't have a hard time coming to as a conclusion.
      All in all, I genuinely think there is not arguing out of this. It's just plot convenience.

    • @malcolm32
      @malcolm32 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@badreddinekasmi8919 Right, but again, Light very clearly isn't using the Death Note and L has no way of knowing taking the Note from him will make any difference. Sure you could argue Light shouldn't be able to kill Higuchi in front of L at all without him seeing. All I can say to that, is there's a lot going on and in the manga, right when Light writes the name, L is looking outside, giving directions to Soichiro, but the point I'm making still stands. L doesn't really have much reason to take the Note from Light in that moment.

    The way I read this is that we’re supposed to see how Light has managed to manipulate and use everyone in his life, now including Rem and Ryuk. Light believes he has control, whereas the actual reason is that Ryuk just finds this more entertaining.
    This mirrors the (manga) ending where Light desperately screams at Ryuk to help him, still believing in his hubris that he has control, and Ryuk just shuts him down, revealing that he was fully aware, and now that the game is up there’s no need to back him anymore

    i feel like L WANTED Light to get the notebook. The look he gives Light after saying "oh yeah, good idea." Just narrows his eyes to flat out suspicion, followed by Light's thoughts of "I've won!!!" Like, if Light didn't return his memory and become Kira-Light, L couldn't really try Light for the murders since he really wasn't faking the amnesia. It was obvious he had forgotten.
    And side bar, remember back when L asked in his premise about the power leaving Light? "Was it Light's will that the power be passed on? Or was there some invisible force that passed it on?" Well now Light if he never got his memory back, would assume (and rightly so to an extent) that Remm passed the power (the notebook) on to someone else (Huguchi). He would ever win as Light, or win as Kira.

    So this episode is one of the first that really falters from leaving out small bits from the manga.
    In the helicopter, Ryuzaki does consider the consequences of Light having the notebook, but also thinks "He wouldn't try something surrounded as he is". The entire implication is he's holding the notebook, but there's no way he can use it without leaving evidence and also proving Higuchi's claim about it basically right away. As well, I believe that Ryuzaki is basically in a similar shocked state, although to a lesser degree and shown in an understated way. Add in that everything that happens takes place over the course of a minute while Light does something reasonable (and confirms that the first page is an exact match as part of the conversation to stall), and L gets thrown under the bus a lot less than in the animation.
    Next, we have Ryuk writing the notebook. There's some very key lines in the forest scene in the manga, namely Ryuk asking Rem if he'd get in trouble for writing fake rules, and confirming with Light that something fun would result from writing them. Basically Ryuk is responding to a double bribe of his personal food drug, and a more entertaining show once Light can move freely again (and Ryuk not catching on that these rules will enable Light to move freely). So basically Ryuk being basically the Shinigami that other Shinigami think is strange and probably a junkie acting like himself. I suspect Light's plan would have changed had Ryuk been unwilling to act on that sort of bribe, though no idea what he would have done to try and get a full alibi without the fake rules. Possibly he wouldn't, and just worked under tighter constraints but a stronger chance of getting L's name.

    I like when you talk about how Light isn't bothered with himself after his memories come back. He really was disgusted at the idea of being Kira. Id bet it has to do with Kira being his true self. Light without his memories is a disguise. A lie even to himself. I wonder if he had never gotten the notebook, if he would have become a detective that secretly murders people, sort of like that show Dexter.

    In L's defense; he didn't freak out likely because he was braced for it this time.
    And while Light likely didn't plan on ending up with the Death Note in *those* exact conditions he likely assumed he'd have it for long enough to pull off his plan.
    And I think L let him hold onto it thinking he couldn't do anything with it... which, in a way, he's right...
    And while Ryuk states he's not on anyone's side he is there for his own amusement. If he gets amusement and an apple for adding some rules, well... That said I never guessed that having Rem present because she's less random was something I hadn't considered.
    And yeah... it's a punch in the gut to have Nice-Light more or less dead and Kira-Light be his killer...

    I think you're right that most normal people after being held hostage for close to two months wouldn't wanna join the investigation led by the person who held them captive. But because Light is childish and hates losing, he probably in his mind wanted to get revenge on Kira for having him appear to be a suspect to L or something to that effect (he did say while locked up that he was being framed, I believe). Or he wanted to be there to rub it in L's face when L caught the true Kira so he can be like "I told you so." Thus encouraging him to join the task force upon being released.

  • @nataliaborys1554
    @nataliaborys1554 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I think it makes sense L would be so resigned. I mean, I can imagine he suspects the last rule is bullshit, but he can't really... do anything about it. Being aware that you're cornered doesn't make you any less cornered. He can't hold onto monitoring Light, because he's not working alone here and currently strongly being outvoted 4:1, as long as the 13-day rule stays undisputed. He can't disprove the 13-day rule because Higuchi's dead, Rem won't crack, and testing it himself would require killing someone and then waiting on whether or not he will die, which is another plan noone would probably agree to. He's trapped, he probably feels frustrated and perhaps angry with himself for letting it come to this, and is probably aware he will likely die in the near future. It's understandable he'd feel depressed about the whole thing.

    Ayy, I'm glad to see you back with another banger analysis as I have two thoughts about this episode.
    7:46 This is the first time we see someone regain the memories of the death note after forfeiting ownership. And honestly, I did think it would be like after the 3 month period of Light being “Light” and not “Kira”, he would gain the self-determination to catch Kira. When we see Misa get her notebook back, she was aware she was the second kira and doesn't change much in terms of personality. For Light, It's pretty clear that as soon as he gains the notebook he immediately transformed into Kira.I always interpret this as what L said back when he was watching light in his room, staying that Kira’s psyche must be of “God-like proportions.” The idea that Kira is so mentally prepared as the god of a new world, that he immediately overpowers Light’s nature. It would have been super interesting if there was an alternate timeline that when Light touches the notebook, he only gains the awareness he was Kira. He could possibly be screaming “NO, IT CAN’T BE, NOOOO!!!” and then throws the notebook in fit of panic, immediately reverting him back to no memories and leaving behind a confused as hell L.
    29:20 This really does infuriate me and I honestly believe that L has a strong argument of not letting Light and Misa go. I find it super annoying that nobody in the task force ever considers to look back at all the events of the entire story since now they have the murder weapon confirmed. Let's think about this now that we have the knowledge of the notebook. Kira is someone who is in Japan, killed Lind L Taylor, a childish notion of justice, likely a student from the times of killing, killed FBI Agents investigating the NPA, killed Raye penber who demonstrated odd behaviors, had cameras set up in one of the rooms when Kira randomly killed a petty theif, and was the first person to met the 2nd Kira. Sounds like Light, right? Does not sound like a 40-year old businessman working in Yotsuba such as Higuchi
    If the task force was to consider the 13 day rule legit, then that means the the original Kira that killed L Taylor must be dead, considering it's been 50 days since the lights incarceration. And if Higuchi is the original Kira, not only would it not make sense for him to go after the FBI agents why would he then immediately go to natural killings during Light’s imprisonment and then go back to killing criminals and benefiting Yotsuba, which wasn’t even benefiting when Light was Kira. The 13 day rules even worse on Misa's side, because there is evidence of her setting up the tapes that was sent to Sakura TV. Everyone on the task force, including Light and L, was going along with the idea that Light must have been Kira at some point along and that Kira’s powers transfers between people, also including that Misa has some connection to the 2nd Kira. The idea that they all dropped this as soon as the 13 rule is discovered is really frustrating,

    at 19:20 i figured the burried notebook gets a pass because technically it currently had no owner, as it was dropped into the human world, yet nobody "picked it up" yet, Light made sure to not directly touch it after it was dropped again.

  • @Zetact_
    @Zetact_ 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    With Light joining the investigation it should be kept in mind that his sense of justice was a thing since the start - he was always intending on going into criminal science and he'd independently chosen to help with cases in the past. He definitely knows that trauma or otherwise he'd choose to help out.
    Not only does the Kira investigation put his father through a ton of trouble (and Good Light would want to help if he could) but also Light knows that after being confined out of suspicion of being Kira he'd want to vindicate himself from L's accusations by catching the real Kira. Light definitely knows that in the event he's let free that he'd be very likely to push to join the investigation no matter what happened in the incarceration, and while L might be hesitant to agree, not only would he have no logical reason to refuse due to the incarceration clearing most of the team's suspicion on Light, the connections he has with those on the investigation (namely his father) would also help.
    Ryuk choosing to add the rules isn't really much assistance in my opinion. It's just a case of him wanting to see where Light is going with the plan, the only thing he's actually contributing is his handwriting in order to keep the presentation consistent. Even if he weren't promised an apple, I could see Ryuk going for it because Light not being able to execute a plan over something as simple as handwriting analysis wouldn't be very satisfying (note: studies have shown that handwriting analysis is more difficult for Japanese due to the way the language is written but that's a moot point because it's specifically brought up in a manga line that didn't make it into the anime that Light didn't leave anything that could link to him like handwriting or fingerprints prior to handing it off to Higuchi - this is not clear if Light is saying that he writes differently in the Note or that he removed the pages, either could be the case).
    Light probably would have been capable of replicating Ryuk's handwriting if he put his mind to it. So Ryuk isn't giving Light a noticeable advantage, just saving him some trouble on executing the plan that he came up with on his own, which he's generally been fine with doing if he doesn't have to actually put in too much effort. It's kinda similar to Ryuk agreeing to go through the processes in the woods that let Light do the shuffle-up.

    i think that because of the BB LA muder case, and BB in general, L was only scared to think shinigami did exist, and thats why he screamed, putting together that the second kira has the eyes, just like how BB said he has Shinigami eyes, thats why, ain the moment of him seeing a shinigami, he doesnt freak out, becasue this only completely confirms what he had suspected

    I agree that it goes against what Ryuk previously said for him to write the extra rules in the note. However, I feel like over the course of the show Ryuk gets lowkey invested in Kira and Light and doesn't mind helping out from time to time. Thing is, he had that negative feelings without knowing anything about his past and death note, when he regained his memories he gained them with all his intentions and his arguments why it is "justified", and If he were to gain that information like how Misa did - by Rem telling her after touching her with piece of paper- he would've been disgusted by it, but with all his memories its understandable that he is right in action. Also after knowing this was all his plan with went all perfectly it must've been a huuge ego boost.

  • @RandomKmatics

    This was one of my favorite videos from this series so far. Some points
    My interpretation of the rule is as long as the notebook is being used a shinigami has to shadow the human using it and encourage them to use it if they’re not doing so. That’s why Ryuk came after he originally dropped the notebook and returned again when Miss regained her memories. He now has to shadow her
    I wonder how long Misa’s lifespan should be. If I remember correctly (and I’m probably not) all of Gelus’ remaining lifespan should’ve gone to Misa when he saved her. So in addition to wanting to do whatever she could for Light, theoretically her halfing her life twice would bring her back to the range of a normal lifespan. (If Gelus had 500 years then it’s about 580/4 which is 145 so longer than average) but if that’s not the case I wonder if the lifespan cut made what happened to her in the end inevitable
    And I never really had a problem with Ryuk writing the fake rules because like you said he just wants to be entertained and it really shows one of Light’s biggest flaws of thinking he can control/manipulate everyone and everything.

    Don't you think it's frustrating for task force too, they have been doing illegal shit for more than one time for months and even lost their job, Because Of Riyuzaki's intuition that Light is Kira. Plus everytime He says 'If Light does this he is innocent', Then Light does the thing but is never cleared, plus Light and Misa were helping Them to catch Kira this whole time, proving themselves one of the most valuable asset. Plus the only thing that can be considered as 'proof' vastly contradicts of Light being Kira. Plus I think they are Irritated over the fact That they think Riyuzaki is framing Light just because he isn't ready to accept that he was wrong first time.
    Also they don't know anything about forfeiting ownership and its aspects. As far as they know Book is a trap which forces you to write names in intervel of every 13 days which in their perspective Light and Misa aren't prisoners of.

    Love the video! I actually never understood why light did the whole death note ownerships fiasco thing with the shinigamis so that was great for me.
    One note I will say is that it's in Ls best interest for Light to have the death note, at least temporarily. Because to L he's always known light is Kira but seeing how light reacts with the death note in hand could be valueble, if he tries to kill someone with it he's got evidence of it now. He could not have known it was memory based and touching the death note would have other effects other than seeing shinigami. So observing him with the death note was probably the best move with the information he had.

      His distate for Kira comes from his narcisism and distorted world views there were always there. For Amnesiac Light, Kira is the other, an enemy he's actively fighting and a criminal. He simply cannot associate himself with anything he perceives as bad, the biggest example i think everyone can think about it Light completely dismissing Ryuk's remarks about how in kira's new world he would be another bad person too.

    I know this is spoilers for next episode, but it really does upset me how smug Light is for "winning" against L, because he does not achieve it through his own merit. He has to depend on shinigami, basically divine intervention, in order to achieve it. Like, he would not have thrown everyone off his scent with the rules if Ryuk didn't step in as you mentioned, and L would not have died in the next episode if Rem didn't decided to sacrifice herself. And it's not like Rem choosing to sacrifice herself is a play on Light's part either, because Rem would always kill L if she believed Misa was going to be caught and executed so really Rem sacrificing herself is as if Kira had one extra life if his loss was a foregone conclusion. So, basically, Rem died because Light lost and ended up taking L with her. The only possible way for L to have avoided this was for him to workout somehow that Rem was devoted completely to protect Misa.

    On the bit about shinigami needing to make sure the notebook is used: Maybe that's not really a short-term thing, And since ryuk new that within reasonable doubt it would be used again in a few months or years at most that fulfilled the obligation.
    On the bit about ryuk helping light by creating these new rules... I think that's not too big because honestly, light could have written those rules himself. There was probably some stuff like making the handwriting match that was easier with ryuk, But at that point it feels more like... "Eh, Why not It's not that big a deal and it'll continue this game."

    There's actually an unintentional 5th reason that many people probably don't think of. On the idea that after someone touching the death note the can see a shinigami who's tied to the notebook no matter what source it is, switching misa's and lights notebooks effectively make it so that little hair movement from when Misa was incarnated done by rem couldn't be proven to be by rem as idealy rem doesn't attach to Misa anymore, thus making her not show up. I don't know if this is proven true as we never get actual confirmation but it's a neat detail to really think about it since we have no way to prove if the death note actually works that way or not.

    I think Ryuk is just sympathetic for light, just like how rem is for misa but not to the same extent. We know that before things got intense with L, Light and Ryuk would play video games together, so it’s safe to assume that they enjoy each other’s company. Ryuk sacrifices his decision of being a bystander in the situation for Light due to their friendship. I always saw this scene as Ryuk just being a homie.

    I think in regard to the How to Use it rule midway in the video, the reason it didn't apply to the notebook buried in the woods is because Light intended on using it again at a later time, rather than just storing it for awhile with no intent to pick it back up. The rule is likely referencing someone finding a Death Note and deciding not to ever use it and instead stuff it in a drawer somewhere.

    Ryuk agrees to go along with things if it means the game is more fun. If Light is caught, the game is over too soon. And it would have been Misa's fault for tripping up the plan, meaning Light had an unfair disadvantage. So it's easy to justify rigging the game with the notebook just to let the game go on a little longer. Double the drama, double the fun.

    I think what's interesting about fake rules is that if they were correct, someone could casually touch their enemies with death note, then burn the notebook and kill them this way

    As long as he is not writing in notebook he can't kill anyone and is harmless (right?), plus L doesn't know he has a piece of paper in his watch. Plus the Light he knew would've punched him for suspecting him again

    20:30 I think the reason why Ryuk isn't violating that rule is because it's technically still in use, if you consider the intent to use it eventually as being in use. I imagine there have been many times throughout history where a Death Note had to be buried or hidden for prolonged periods of time for any number of reasons.
    Or it could just be the Shinigamis not caring because it's a cool thing to watch. They have been shown to be very bored, only gambling for the most part, and I believe we've seen a congregation of Shinigami circle around the main portal to the Human Realm in another episode (when Sidoh enters the picture maybe?).
    I believe it's a bit of both. Maybe it's crossed a threshold for being unused, but the Shinigami don't care because rhe drama thats currently unfolding is like their own little Truman Show. Lol.

  • @Montegoraon

    10:07 The 2020 one-shot chapter confuses this issue. In it, Ryuk gives the Death Note to the main character by first dropping it directly on his head, then later touching him with it while Ryuk is holding it, and near the end Ryuk (almost) hands it directly to another character. So it seems dropping on the ground is not strictly necessary in all cases, though perhaps Ryuk's intent mattered there. And/or maybe Light didn't want to go through the trouble of figuring the particulars out right that second.
    19:20 This is probably not a hard-and-fast rule, but more a general instruction or decree. Again, the 2020 one-shot has someone own a Death Note but never use it to kill anyone, and the shinigami king reacts... poorly. It also reveals that the rules are not inherent to the Death Note - the king himself writes them, and he apparently wants the Death Notes to be used, not just kept. For Ryuk's part, he probably doesn't even know about this rule because the average shinigami doesn't necessarily know all that much about them, as previously noted. There's also a rule that says shinigami aren't allowed to boink each other, or humans, and that has nothing to do with the functioning of the Death Notes at all. One can imagine how it came about, though. Bored shinigami wanting to try something new. The king getting madder and madder as he keeps insisting that their role is to end life, not create it. And then finally handing down the new rule to make sure it's set in stone.

    Fun fact, in the italian version, when talking to Misa, Ryuk refers himself as a "Maschietto" which is akin to little boy instead of being shy, and that she might make him blush

    I would like to bring up a small point that even furthers L’s deduction of 2 notebooks existing. Earlier in the show, Light’s message to L is “L, do you know, Gods of Death love apples?” Gods…plural. This furthers L’s ability to reasonably deduce with logic that there are 2 notebooks, and as he states “possibly more”. Which is also true, as in the whole series, there are 3 notebooks, at least functional ones that are paired with a God of Death/Shinigami

    I think maybe innocent-light slowly came to accept the theory that he in fact was Kira and planned to be Kira again. I mean he must have thought about this lately. So all of his innocence was just a remaining scrap on the surface of his persona as it always was (even before having the death note for the first time)

      @@overanalyzinganime I'm glad we can at least agree on missing Good Light. Problem is when he was ultimately a yielding part of a whole that ends up alternating between utilitarian and demonic, neither of which I think would describe Good Light. Look at it from an Osmosis Jones-style perspective: whoever would be behind Good Light sure as hell isn't mayor of this mess.

    In the Manga, while Light is writing Higuchi’s name, Ryuzaki’s internal dialogue is basically just “he’s not that stupid to write a name in there right now.”
