"Stops being a victim" is probably just a result of fitting the text and using a more esoteric and awkward translation. The Japanese elucidates: "デスノートを持つ事によって、命を取られる側から取る側にな" rough translation, "The holder of the Death Note goes from one whose life is taken into one who takes lives." It's still a little vague but the implication I think is that because someone who holds the Death Note is not one "meant" to be killed by the Notebook, that's why it is deemed "unnecessary" to view the lifespan. It's probably a point for the fan theory that those who use the Death Note will become Shinigami but I'd see it more as just a bureaucratic formality in the classification of Death Note holders.

She was likely shown a lot by Misa during her run as Kira, but she is smart enough to figure things out with very little information. In the scene we are talking about she deduces that Light and Misa must be luring Higuchi into a trap, with the only thing she knows is that Misa intentionally talked to him once. She had no other warnings of when it would happen or even if it was happening and still figured out there was a trap in place and this was the plan. It just shows her ability to problem solve and if Misa did show her it gave her a good chance to learn, considering what she can learn without information.
Rem may have offered the eye deal in the first place in order to shorten his life with the assumption that his death coming sooner would make Light's plan move faster

They're just doing their groceries.

Still can't help but think it's a mistranslation or something. Rem always seemed like a pretty well informed shinigami).
I wouldn't be surprised if Misa was the one who explained how tracking phones worked back when she first became the second Kira. When she was sneaking around having a friend mail out letters. She was obviously trying to cover her tracks, so I think it makes sense.

in the manga there was a lil conversation between aizawa and ide while they were in the car that really goes to show how strong their friendship is and i really wish they kept it in the anime. aizawa basically tells ide how the whole reason hes still going after kira is because of ide and how he had inspired him, and ide tells aizawa he trusted him enough right away to have him lead their investigation about kira, since ide knew aizawa knew kira the best. their relationship is probably one of the most wholesome things this series has to offer, and i really wish we got to see more of them
To be fair Rem probably studied up on humanity as soon as Lights plan was enacted to be able to manipulate the new kira to make the probability of misa living just a little better

It would explain why their lifespan can't be viewed anymore, there's nothing to gain. And it might further explain why other shinigami wouldn't write Misa's name to try to get all the extra years from her. Except for that small window where she didn't have the eyes, but you can probably just attribute that to them being lazy. I love that this series has been coming back so strong, keep it up!!
So in regards to this episode: 1) I always found interesting that Higuchi didn't just check in the internet for Matsuda' s face. I guess social media really wasn't that huge in those times, because if this broadcast happened in our current era, Matsuda's leaked face would be all over the place in Twitter or something like that. (and I guess Sakura TV has little credibility so probably not a lot of people was watching or recording the program). 2) I always assumed L tied Misa up for the possibilty of Higuchi writing her name down, controlling her actions tl make her confess the truth and Matsuda'a real name. I wonder if episode 25 are gonna be an hour long analysis lmao. The amount stuff that happens in that episodes is insane. Lots of stuff that are opened to interptation too with all those silent moments.
To be fair in the manga this takes place in 2004(07 in the anime) So social media wasn’t really a thing most people used especially those outside the states
I think that lights dad is pissed about lights question because he's been the chief for years, a cop for decades. Especially since it's his son asking. I think he's worried light is putting himself in too much danger, and questioning if he's able to do his job right

I think the eye deal is so deep in their routine that any shimigami would offer it to anyone - because, well, why pass up on half that lifetime and an opportunity to leave sooner? So I think she wouldn't have had a second thought concerning offering it...
I think "Stops being a victim" is metaphoric. Essentially, all humans are victims in the eyes of a god of death. However, once you pick up a death note you lose that perspective from the Death Gods. You're no longer one of the humans. One of the victims. You're now something more. Closer to the Gods of Death who ALSO are never referred to as "victims."
I never really thought about just how dumb everyone was when Higuchi was reaching into his bag. The really strange thing is that Mogi was one of the main people that apprehended Misa and they were way better prepared to capture someone with the Shingami eyes. Even tho Misa showing up at Light's school was completely unpredictable.

oh, damn - you've been here for a minute if you saw Episode 05 when it came out. lol. i appreciate the support and for sticking with me, even though i've been pretty inconsistent in the past.
the gun felt like ANOTHER L test. Like "If he really IS Kira and plans to get me killed, he'll take the gun and shoot me." When Light refuses, L has a smile like "he really has lost all memory and isn't faking." Hence why in the next episode (SPOILERS) L holds the book in such a way that Light can grab it. When Light regains his memory, L's face just drops to a knowing glare right before Kira- Light exclaims in his head "I've won!" you also cut out a interesting part. When Higuchi is going to all the places Light planned, Light says "This is going just as I planned, its almost scary." L gives him a look and says something like "There's no need to be nervous Light." It comes as a double. We can take it as face value as a "Dont be worried, this is good" and also L again testing Light to get Kira reaction, which of course he doesn't. Lastly, the line from the Chief when Light asks him if he is ready "I dont need my son asking if I'm ready." I think it was meant to be a joke, like with Matsuda in episode 2 when he said "If you went on to say we should be thanking Kira..." and then adds "Im joking Matsuda." I think its just bad voice acting and the Chief is joking with Light.

However, if they intentionally misspell the name four times, the Death Note owner will die."

In regards to the "How to use it" I believe that what being a victim means just a non death note user based on the rest of the context of the rule. The word victim in this case could just mean with the power of a death note the user is no longer "powerless" or "helpless"
For why Rem told him about the shinigami eyes, I think it would make sense for Higuchi to read the rules upon receiving the Death Note and think back at the Sakura TV incident being like "wait what the hell" and I mean Rem can't just go "I'm not telling you!" Also as you said she figured out people's inner thoughs pretty well, and since Light basically ordered her to give the Death Note to someone who would use it to its fullest, she probably knew it was because Light intented to get it back, and it's not like sharing this much information with Higuchi would've hindered Light's plans. The task force already pretty much knew about the ability to kill without names anyways.

11:34 Good question, the only thing I can think of is Higuchi's lack of caring. It's already been established that Higuchi's motives for using the death note greatly differ from Light and Misa, especially since ridding the world of criminals isn't even his real objective. My guess is the reason his accidental death is different is because, unlike Light who puts more thought and consideration about how a person would die, Higuchi simply wrote down the cause of death and nothing else and as such the death note just came up with the quickest way to make it happen via its default killing method.
This episode was devoted a lot to figuring out Matsuda's name, so I had an epiphany... we never learn his first name in the series. Neither we learn Aizawa's or Mogi's names.

This episode and the episode are some of my favorite of the series. The music, the feeling of being on the edge of your seat as this plot line comes to a close, everything is awesome even after watching this show like over 30 times through.
I watched/read Death Note at least four times and never noticed the foreign cars. Keep in mind I noticed Edward Elric was right-handed before the Human Transmutation and learned to write with his left after losing his arm 😂

The phrase "stops being a victim" is very interesting wording, especially considering the part prior to it - "gains the ability to kill". I propose the idea that "victim" is someone who is innocent in the eyes of the shinigami. They can still be killed, the same way a killer can still die despite having made someone his victim, but they're all equally guilty and equally fulfilling the role of feeding the shinigami. Killing a death note user would be counter-productive for the shinigami - you don't want people to steal your food, after all. This is why the people that "gather that food" for them stop taking the role of the victim and start taking the role of the killer. i don't know how else to make sense of this

Kinda late here, but I believe Light's father had that reaction because it was his own son asking if he was ready. Japan has a really strict "parenting respect" that most japanese families follow, and Light asking his own father if he's ready to do the job he has been doing for YEARS probably felt a little disrespectful to him It's actually why it's rare to see Light scream at his father, or why he actively tries to get him on his side instead of just doing whatever he wants because he finished high school and is legally an adult. Being an adult on Japan, culturally speaking, doesn't mean you can just do whatever you want without your parents' consent. Of course by law you can, but you'll probably be excluded from the family or whatever-
If I was the third position at the end of this episode I would’ve be thinking “dammit all !!! Since Ryuk wrote all the rules in the Death Note, it's possible to explain away most any inaccuracy in them by just figuring that he was wrong or ignorant about something.

Theory: I think that the whole "stops being a victim" thing kind of refers to the death note itself. It probably stems from the whole idea at the beginning of the story of the death note being a curse, which causes terrible things to happen to the user. I'm guessing that now with the shinigami eyes, you've become an embodiment of that curse itself, instead of being a victim of it. Since I don't think this idea of the death note being a curse was ever mentioned in any of the previous rules of the notebook, I have no clue. But who knows?

The Chief worried about breaking the law makes sense. Imagine you're a stickler for justice and the rules and the law. He's willing to bend the rules where necessary to make sure the whole of Japan is safe. But if he doesn't HAVE to break the law, he won't. He probably thinks it's a good mark on his karma board or something. Or maybe something he does to keep telling himself he's a good man.
shinigami not being allowed to kill death note users actually makes the most sense. Wasnt there a rule that said that shinigami can borrow there death notes to other shinigami? Then sidoh could have just killed the owner of his death note using someone elses death note and retrieve it. And rem wouldnt need to be worried about higuchi killing misa as rem could just kill him. The problem is that Rem threatened to kill light multiple times if anything happened to misa. So she either bluffed because him and Ryuk dont know all the rules or its something else? Not only is it ridiculous that they let him reach into his bag, but it's even more ridiculous that instead of tackling him to the ground or something, they just all stood 6 feet away from him, if he had a knife in his bag he still would have been able to lunge at Wedy, kill her, and escape. It would have been way better for Wedy to just stand back and cover them, especially when you consider she wasn't going to shoot him anyway because they wanted to take him alive, which begs the another question, why a gun and bare hands. I think that lights dad is pissed about lights question because he's been the chief for years, a cop for decades. Especially since it's his son asking. I think he's worried light is putting himself in too much danger, and questioning if he's able to do his job right
With regards to the rule about someone who "stops being a victim", I remember seeing from somewhere that apparently characters with the shinigami eyes can't be controlled by the notebook. Not sure if this answers the question but thought it was interesting!

I think the eye deal is so deep in their routine that any shimigami would offer it to anyone - because, well, why pass up on half that lifetime and an opportunity to leave sooner? So I think she wouldn't have had a second thought concerning offering it...
I think "Stops being a victim" is metaphoric. Essentially, all humans are victims in the eyes of a god of death. However, once you pick up a death note you lose that perspective from the Death Gods. You're no longer one of the humans. One of the victims. You're now something more. Closer to the Gods of Death who ALSO are never referred to as "victims."

I never really thought about just how dumb everyone was when Higuchi was reaching into his bag. The really strange thing is that Mogi was one of the main people that apprehended Misa and they were way better prepared to capture someone with the Shingami eyes. Even tho Misa showing up at Light's school was completely unpredictable.

the gun felt like ANOTHER L test. Like "If he really IS Kira and plans to get me killed, he'll take the gun and shoot me." When Light refuses, L has a smile like "he really has lost all memory and isn't faking." Hence why in the next episode (SPOILERS) L holds the book in such a way that Light can grab it. When Light regains his memory, L's face just drops to a knowing glare right before Kira- Light exclaims in his head "I've won!"
you also cut out a interesting part. When Higuchi is going to all the places Light planned, Light says "This is going just as I planned, its almost scary." L gives him a look and says something like "There's no need to be nervous Light." It comes as a double. We can take it as face value as a "Dont be worried, this is good" and also L again testing Light to get Kira reaction, which of course he doesn't.
Lastly, the line from the Chief when Light asks him if he is ready "I dont need my son asking if I'm ready." I think it was meant to be a joke, like with Matsuda in episode 2 when he said "If you went on to say we should be thanking Kira..." and then adds "Im joking Matsuda." I think its just bad voice acting and the Chief is joking with Light.

On the death note wiki, rule 35 is:
"If a Death Note owner accidentally misspells a name four times, that person will be free from being killed by the Death Note. However, if they intentionally misspell the name four times, the Death Note owner will die."
I love this series. There's so many subtle things I missed, and it genuinely feels like I'm watching Death Note for the first time all over again. I'd love to see your take on AoT too.

In regards to the "How to use it" I believe that what being a victim means just a non death note user based on the rest of the context of the rule. The word victim in this case could just mean with the power of a death note the user is no longer "powerless" or "helpless"

For why Rem told him about the shinigami eyes, I think it would make sense for Higuchi to read the rules upon receiving the Death Note and think back at the Sakura TV incident being like "wait what the hell" and I mean Rem can't just go "I'm not telling you!" Also as you said she figured out people's inner thoughs pretty well, and since Light basically ordered her to give the Death Note to someone who would use it to its fullest, she probably knew it was because Light intented to get it back, and it's not like sharing this much information with Higuchi would've hindered Light's plans. The task force already pretty much knew about the ability to kill without names anyways.

11:34 Good question, the only thing I can think of is Higuchi's lack of caring. It's already been established that Higuchi's motives for using the death note greatly differ from Light and Misa, especially since ridding the world of criminals isn't even his real objective.
My guess is the reason his accidental death is different is because, unlike Light who puts more thought and consideration about how a person would die, Higuchi simply wrote down the cause of death and nothing else and as such the death note just came up with the quickest way to make it happen via its default killing method.
I stand by the fact that this is the best episode of the series, the tension, the music, the action shots, it's PERFECTION.
This episode was devoted a lot to figuring out Matsuda's name, so I had an epiphany... we never learn his first name in the series. Neither we learn Aizawa's or Mogi's names.

This episode and the episode are some of my favorite of the series. The music, the feeling of being on the edge of your seat as this plot line comes to a close, everything is awesome even after watching this show like over 30 times through.

The phrase "stops being a victim" is very interesting wording, especially considering the part prior to it - "gains the ability to kill". I propose the idea that "victim" is someone who is innocent in the eyes of the shinigami. They can still be killed, the same way a killer can still die despite having made someone his victim, but they're all equally guilty and equally fulfilling the role of feeding the shinigami.
Killing a death note user would be counter-productive for the shinigami - you don't want people to steal your food, after all. This is why the people that "gather that food" for them stop taking the role of the victim and start taking the role of the killer.

Kinda late here, but I believe Light's father had that reaction because it was his own son asking if he was ready.
Japan has a really strict "parenting respect" that most japanese families follow, and Light asking his own father if he's ready to do the job he has been doing for YEARS probably felt a little disrespectful to him
It's actually why it's rare to see Light scream at his father, or why he actively tries to get him on his side instead of just doing whatever he wants because he finished high school and is legally an adult.
Being an adult on Japan, culturally speaking, doesn't mean you can just do whatever you want without your parents' consent. Of course by law you can, but you'll probably be excluded from the family or whatever-

Since Ryuk wrote all the rules in the Death Note, it's possible to explain away most any inaccuracy in them by just figuring that he was wrong or ignorant about something.
No he only wrote the basics. The other rules aren’t actually written in the deathnote it’s just world building information for the audience

Actually, Light wrote quite a few of the rules in his Death Note as he was using it. This is actually the Death Note that he gives to Rem. It is clever because the information in the rules actually leads to the demise of Kira III.

Theory: I think that the whole "stops being a victim" thing kind of refers to the death note itself. It probably stems from the whole idea at the beginning of the story of the death note being a curse, which causes terrible things to happen to the user. I'm guessing that now with the shinigami eyes, you've become an embodiment of that curse itself, instead of being a victim of it. Since I don't think this idea of the death note being a curse was ever mentioned in any of the previous rules of the notebook, I have no clue. But who knows?

The Chief worried about breaking the law makes sense. Imagine you're a stickler for justice and the rules and the law. He's willing to bend the rules where necessary to make sure the whole of Japan is safe. But if he doesn't HAVE to break the law, he won't. He probably thinks it's a good mark on his karma board or something. Or maybe something he does to keep telling himself he's a good man.

shinigami not being allowed to kill death note users actually makes the most sense. Wasnt there a rule that said that shinigami can borrow there death notes to other shinigami? Then sidoh could have just killed the owner of his death note using someone elses death note and retrieve it. And rem wouldnt need to be worried about higuchi killing misa as rem could just kill him.
The problem is that Rem threatened to kill light multiple times if anything happened to misa. So she either bluffed because him and Ryuk dont know all the rules or its something else? I think its either a mistranslation, a mechanic the writers thought of that was later abandoned/forgotten or just a plot hole lol

Not only is it ridiculous that they let him reach into his bag, but it's even more ridiculous that instead of tackling him to the ground or something, they just all stood 6 feet away from him, if he had a knife in his bag he still would have been able to lunge at Wedy, kill her, and escape.
It would have been way better for Wedy to just stand back and cover them, especially when you consider she wasn't going to shoot him anyway because they wanted to take him alive, which begs the another question, why a gun and bare hands. If they are worried about him seeing them then why not some pepper spray? Why not a flashbang when he goes in the room? L is more rich then Bruce Wayne and we've seen the tech he has at his disposal, they seriously have no non-lethal coverage for this confrontation where they plan to take him alive?
