  • Out with the old and in with the new.
    Before we have any outboard problems, we decided to re-power.

    The motor shipped with oil separate in the box. There were tags all over the motor saying it's not filled from the factory, as did the predelivery inspection forms that were completed when your bought it.

      That’s right. It didn’t have oil in it, which is common for small engines to be shipped that way.

    I’ve had this motor for exactly one year now. Just did my first service on it-oil change with filter, lower unit lube drain and refill, prop grease, and checked the red ring in fuel line for water. All looks good. Overall I’m happy with the motor. It gets my 14 foot Loweline up to 29 mph max with just myself. I can even pull a tube with 2 children and reach 24 mph. My only complaint is that you can hear an annoying rattle sound at mid throttle which, I’ve discovered, is coming from the up/down tilt lever (with red tip).

    I suggest you read your manual. Might not be a good idea to work on engine if you don’t know the difference between an oil filter and a fuel filter.

    • @Sea2SeaAdventures
      @Sea2SeaAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I tapped on the oil filter, while saying fuel. I caught it in post-production and labeled it in the video.
      Oil change was actually tricky on this one. Need to drain when raised, lower, then raise to drain again.

    Hello, I am looking at getting a new 20 hp merc for my 14 foot fishing boat, there’s a west marine near me but they stopped selling 20s and 25s. Do you know of anywhere I could pick one up from in the Minneapolis area? Also which throttle do you use? Thanks.

    • @grayantitoplayz6355

      Otherwise if I can’t find the remote engine any time soon I will just get a tiller engine and convert it.

    • @Sea2SeaAdventures
      @Sea2SeaAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 20 hp merc is made by Tohatsu from Japan under the Mercury name.

      Perhaps you can find a local dealer. Best of luck!

    Why do you have a 20hp hooked up to that big boat ? I saw that motor on flat bottom 14 foot boats. You have no idea what your doing lol !!!

    • @Sea2SeaAdventures
      @Sea2SeaAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hatchman slam My local dealer, Sunset Marine in El Cajon,CA. The side mount throttle has the key integrated into the controls and I just needed to tell them how long I needed them. Make sure they are long enough to do a loop before going into the outboard so they don’t get pinched.

    Getting a new 20hp and wondered if yours came with the steering plate that attaches to the steering arm. Did not know if that came with outboard or if you purchased it separate. Looks good!

      I am picking it up on Saturday. It ended up being delayed. It is going on a Grumman 4.4 fishing boat.

    Is there not a plug on the right side where you can attach a hose?

    • @Sea2SeaAdventures
      @Sea2SeaAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there is. Supper easy to flush. That hose connection is above the pump, so you end up running cold water through it.

      $4,500, I needed new throttle & cables too. Sweet running little engine. I miss the simplicity of running a small outboard.

    Looking to buy one for my 14’ Lund, going down from an old 25 2 stroke. Overall what do you think of the motor? Good buy?

    • @Sea2SeaAdventures
      @Sea2SeaAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, my 2-stroke had good compression, but the power head bolts stripped out and I didn’t want to mix gas.
      It wasn’t on a planing boat, so I got everything I expected from it.
      The motor is made in Japan by Tohatsu for Mercury.
      I sold that boat, due to wanting more size, and I miss that sweet running motor.

      Mercury 40-90hp made it in China, 2.5-30hp made by tohatsu Japan, 115hp+ made in Wisconsin with global (Chinese) parts.
      Did u change the prop to smaller pitch? I'd say get smallest you can or high thrust version.
      I've seen 40hp on a 26x here, that hull was faster than me. I saw a 9.9 with high thrust on another they said they where happy.

      People have and got 30 mph out of them. But that’s a $10k route and if you’re looking for a 30 mph sailboat, might as well go a different route. I sold the MacGregor and got a 2001 Bayliner 2655 with a 350 V8 that does 35 mph!
      The 26x is 2,500 lbs and the 2655 is 6,500 lbs, so the Mrs & kids have more room and don’t get sea sick. The 26x doesn’t take seas very well. We took the 2655 overnight the last two weekends in a row, I will be posting the last overnight video shortly.
