Daniel is SO under appreciated for his talents. Not just his vocals as he was also the main composer for many of their songs from beginning to end. So many bailed on Silverchair - and Daniel - when their sound changed, and “fans” couldn’t accept their growth as a positive. Truly masterful in music.

This band is so underrated it's honestly ridiculous. Daniel Johns is a legit creative genius and it's always bugged me how my fellow Americans never followed them beyond the song Tomorrow. Literally any song from this band is worth checking out. All of their albums are flawless....they didn't make a bad album. But Diorama is the essential one imo. And Daniel brought in Van Dyke Parks(yes that one) to orchestrate several songs. In a 'making of' doc on the Diorama album VDP said of Daniel...that he's the most musically gifted person he's ever worked with who isn't Brian Wilson. That says a lot....and he's not wrong.
Daniel is someone I'll defend to my grave....the guy is a musical genius and more people need to go back and appreciate his work. The band itself is also insane....the 3 of them live is just bananas. Super powerful, so tight, so organic, and so in control of their craft....that they can easily go into weird freeform funky jams at the drop of a hat. Ben Gilles was an amazing dummer for Daniel to play off of.
Can you tell I'm a fan?
I'll stop now....I could gush forever about Silverchair.

I was lucky enough to see them during the YM tour in 2008 or so....in Atlanta....and it was such an incredible night. INSTANT sub!!! I'm from Aus, Daniel is my absolute FAVOURITE artist. Silverchair is my teens, especially since I learned guitar with many of his songs.... but Tuna in the Brine is my ALL. TIME. FAVOURITE. Tuna in the Brine's musical/vocal journey just instantly made sense to me the first time I ever heard it and the lyrics have been etched on my heart from the first listen. "The light in my darkest hour, is fear...." This told me something I never knew about myself when I absolutely needed to know it in my 20s, and has never left me.
All I can say thank you thank you for doing this comparison! I was a grunge girl no question and love Daniels heavy stuff always but MAN was I ever blown away with diorama and forever it's been an absolute masterpiece and remains their best work today. I read an interview in Circus or Hit Parade around 1996, and someone made a comment about Daniel's ability to create "harmonic distortion" with his voice. They described it as something that when his voice broke up a bit, there are overtones that add an essence of harmony even with his single voice track. I've never seen this referenced anywhere else but I think about it all the time and wonder if this is an actual term in vocal music?

It's not that his voice changed its that he is constantly trying to get out of the box the world trys to fit him in . Every single album has a fresh new approach . The thing about Daniel is the world tries to compare and fit him into a box. Comparing him to nirvana has always been a NARROW perspective . There is more sabbath and zeppelin then anything but also pearl jam and Brian Wilson . He has his own formula to represent himself . He has never been a carbon copy of any comparison. I appreciate him as a artists and set him apart from the product they tried to manufacture him as .

If you really want to compare and contrast Daniel John’s vocals check out his 2015 “Talk” album. There aren’t many post-grunge artists brave enough to make a guitar-less electronica album without their steady rock band to fall back on.

Silverchair first went into this different musical direction when they made their song Untitled for the Godzilla soundtrack BTW. There were a few songs in Freak Show that hinted at things to come but Untitled is the first song they made that made it clear they were going in a very more elegant direction.

This brings back so many memories. Diorama is masterpiece, I mean, the orchestrations alone… 🙌

Always loved his voice! The vocal on Frogstomp were mesmerizing! The way he could open his throat yet at the same time do the lazy voice thing while keeping it on top of the lungs- sheer amazing talent. And as a fellow 16yr old kid the jealousy was almost shameful lol

I bought diarama the day it was released. I had moved away for college and really felt alone in my admiration for this album. Since then I’ve always kept it to myself. It’s now surprising to hear others, as I really thought I was the only one.

Chris!!!!!! This is exactly what I've been talking about, Daniel does that all the time especially in Tomorrow, why did I think that this technique was wrong? Now that I know how to jump in and out of it, it's been much easier to sing and navigate around more.

He found his first great-beautiful voice in "Neon Ballroom" and peaked that voice in "Diorama". Then he dared to go weird in "The Dissociatives", and by "Young Modern" he combined the beautiful-well-done-voice with his carefree fun loud voice. IMO we did get a best-of his voice in "Young Modern". Then, 8 years after, a brand new Daniel appeared in "Talk", loved it. And, even though he doesn't sound very good in "Future Never", his melodies are still otherworldly, better than he's ever been before.

Wow. Thanks so much for this video. I'm only now discovering Daniel Johns even though I've always been intrigued. I haven't deep-dived his career before now. Triggered by the release of Chris & Ben's book, started exploring all the info out there.. and there's a lot. Its just so beyond obvious that Daniel is a profoundly gifted musical & artistic mind from a very young age. Its only as he's grown into adulthood and early wisdom that he's realised how different he is to the standard issue. No wonder he feels compelled to keep evolving, pushing, exploring, and challenging himself. He only has this life-time to pursue this as vehemently as he can. Doesn't surprise me at all that he has left many fans in his wake, but that's not where his life's work is...he can't stay that limited. Would be like caging him. Hence the anorexia and then reactive arthritis. Thank goodness he made his way through all that. Listening to his pure voice, his phrasing, his tone, his perfection with pitch, paired with his genius songwriting. I'm so spellbound its hard to do anything else at the moment. Just want more.

I love the evolution of Daniel Johns, I think personally that Tuna in the Brine is his masterpiece. I agree with the comments that he’s underrated. His talented self must me a subject to study and inspiration for all artists. He’s an inspiration. And Diorama was in my opinion the door to his true self as an artist.
And not only that I would add Those Thieving Birds. Both are pieces of art.
