Hi Mandi. We planned our unsupported trek using the trek company websites to find a most common route which had acclimitisation days and a moderated daily vertical climb to give best chance of success. At this altitude it's about daily vertical climb, not just distance travelled. We didn't mind staying at the regular towns and were in busy tea houses at times, but this never caused a problem. It looks to me that settlements have developed in conjuntion with the trekking overnight stops, so a somewhat symbiotic relationship. We did take Diamox through the trip and avoided the worst of the problems, but still difficult to sleep above 5000mtrs. I think I'd pack a decongestent spray next time to clear my nose through the night to hopefully be able to keep breathing through my nose when asleep. Bottom line is if you feel AMS symptoms then stay at that altitude another day, or if really bad then descend, recover, and try again. This is a challenging trek indeed, not hard, just not easy either!

Hi, Patton! It's so nice to hear from you! This is all so great; thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and your experience. I like the idea of taking a decongestant, and I fully agree with your advice on AMS. Thank you so much! I'm sure that this will be exceptionally helpful to lots of people 😀 A huge congrats on the success of your trek! You are awesome! 🥳

Hi, Mandi !!! Wow. What an adventure this was! I love how resourceful you were in the planning phase of this. I can see where all that time was well spent and gave you the ability to make the adjustments you made during the trek and gave you the tools to boldly take this on all by yourself. I love how you embraced the uncomfortable times, made the adjustments, and still found a way to make it to the base camp. It gives us a glimpse of the grit you have. I can only imagine the gratitude you felt when you got the chance to get into clean sheets in a warm bed after a long hot shower in a climate controlled environment!

Your planning is thorough and thoughtful. Great insight. Your point re smaller towns which have tea houses not on the regular map is so helpful. Did you use Far Out or All trails apps? I presume not because there would be limited mobile service and GPS coverage. I guess you could download the route. Given your illness, your decision not to go with a trekking company was a wise one. Brave woman.

Hey, Steph! It's so great to see you again! I'm so happy to have you back for this video, and thank you for your kind words. I actually didn't think that I would need any app maps, and I was excited to do the entire trek without even having to ever pull my phone out, and I had even contemplated leaving it in storage in Kathmandu. But, I do wish that I would have downloaded an app ahead of time because you are so right: by the time you need a map downloaded, there isn't enough coverage. Ah, thank you! Yes, I am exceptionally glad that I had the freedom to go at my own pace solo without feeling awful for slowing an entire group down. Thanks again for watching, Steph! 💞

Hello Mandi, I saw all your videos of Everest, you seem like a very strong woman to me, thank you for uploading them, I am going to go on October 1, ok I already saw that it is now necessary to have a guide, my question is, in Lukla, when When you start trekking, are there people who offer their services to be a Sherpa the entire trekking route? , and do you know more or less how much it costs? I don't speak English very well, but I do speak Spanish. I hope they speak Spanish :). Another question, to do the trekking do you have to go to the Kathmandu office for some paperwork? Or can everything be done from lukla? thank you very much mandy, you have one more follower :)

    • @GoMandiMartin
      @GoMandiMartin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi, Edson! It's such a pleasure to hear from you, and thank you so much for your sweet message. That's such great news that you are planning to do the EBC trek in just one month! Yippie for you! Here's the answers to your questions:
      1. You actually don't need a guide and/or porter if you do the EBC - or at least that was the case when I did my trek three months ago. I recently published a video that walks through how legally trek solo, and just in case you haven't seen that one, here's the link: th-cam.com/video/NRy0lKQ44gk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Sa3O-OOPbvi1senf
      2. If you got to Lukla and decided that you wanted a guide, there are lots (from my experience) of guides that walk around and offer their services all along the route - especially if they see you alone. But, they might try to charge you more, so it's a good idea to know how much a guide should cost. I did price trekking companies, but I don't think that I asked about the price of a private guide - which is likely way more money than going with a group and sharing a guide. If you are interested in the video on how much the trek costs when you go solo vs. with a trekking company, etc., and here's that link: th-cam.com/video/NcEEjpc-x7g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wW9RBMab0DBl5qal
      3. Your English is so impressive; I would love to be able to speak or even write in other languages. You are awesome! I don't think that I heard much Spanish on the trail, but not many people spoke English, either. I did hear lots of French haha.
      4. For the paperwork, if you wanted to go solo, you'll need to get the Trek Card that I discuss in the video linked in #1 above, and you can get that card and your permit into the National Park once you are already on the trail, so there's no paperwork that you need to do in Kathmandu. If you decided to hire a guide or go through a Trekking Company, they will do the paperwork for you once you meet - likely at the airport in Kathmandu or the airport in Lukla.
Ah, yeay! I'm so happy to have you as a subscriber! You're so welcome, and I hope to see you here again very soon. Happy Friday!

Hi mandi 😁,Yeah. I watched all yours videos...and because of my English, maybe I didn't understand everything well. Maybe it is possible that in your video settings you can put a Spanish subtitle option? rn mine can only be read in English..., yes I saw that the laws changed and now they force you to have a guide, you talked about that in a video and also in another video about how to prepare. You are very sweet and kind when you answer me. Did you buy the flight from Kat to Lukla round trip? Which flight agency do you recommend? If you bought the return at the same time, weren't you afraid of not arriving on time to catch the flight? By the way, are you also an Instagrammer? to be able to follow you there? thanks for everything.

@@edsontoribioalguiar298 Good morning, Edson. Thank you for such a sweet and considerate message. I hope that you are having a really great day today. Thank you for letting me know that English is your only option for subtitles. I use to add subtitles in other languages, but I've completely forgotten how as it's been a few years. If you don't mind, I will do a bit of research as soon as I'm able to, and if I'm able to help by adding subtitles, than I'm happy to do so. I will send you an update soon 😊 Here are the answers to your questions:
      1. I did buy my flight from KTM to Lukla roundtrip, and I purchased my tickets directly from Yeti Airlines via their website.
      2. I was quite nervous about missing my return flight, but they offer refunds and you can change your flight if you need to.
      3. Thank you so much for the kind offer, but unfortunately, I'm not on any (other) social media as TH-cam alone keeps me really busy. Thank you for asking; that was very thoughtful 😀
I hope you have a really great day, and I look forward to talking with you again and sending an update very soon.

      @GoMandiMartin  ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@edsontoribioalguiar298 Hi, Edson. I hope my last response posted :) This took me a really long time, but I figured out how to add subtitles in different languages. The editing to get all of the words correctly in English takes several hours per video, so adding subtitles to my videos won't be a fast process, but I do have one video done. I've picked one that isn't my most popular one just in case I messed it up haha. Would you like to just check this video to see if you are able to access the Spanish subtitles ok? th-cam.com/video/vTmsX_cBT2E/w-d-xo.html
And, I have a video that talks all about the flight to Lukla; it's coming out this Saturday, and I'll go back and edit the captioning on that one so that it will have Spanish captions by the time it releases on Saturday.
I hope that all of this helps, and I'll keep you updated as I slowly work through the captions 😃 Thank you for being such a sweetheart! I'll talk to you again soon.

@@sarahgahrn Hi, Sarah! You are very welcome, and I have a quick update for you: Yesterday, I filmed the video talking all about the EBC teahouse, and I hope to have it ready in about 2 weeks. Until then, I jotted down the names of the specific teahouses and villages that I stayed in - just in case it's helpful 🌞
      1. Phakding: Hotel Beer Garden
      2. Monju: Buddha Lodge
      3. Namche Bazaar: Khumbu Lodge
      4. Tengboche: Hotel Himalaya
      5. Pangboche: I can't remember this one.
      6. Dingboche: Hotel Bright Star
      7. Lobuche: Oxygen Altitude (This was my last night's stay before reaching the EBC. Most people stay in Gorekshep overnight before making their descent.)

I don't personally suggest trying to book your teahouses ahead of time because I found that my trek was sincerely hindered by the lack of flexibility from pre-booking, and it costs about 4 times as much, but I can still inquire from my contact if I can share their information if you would still like it 😀I'll see you again very soon, and I hope that you have the best day! 1) one night on AT too Everest Base camp hike seems logical 🧐. Are you freakin nuts?
    2) yes! Getting lost in a strange land may be a bad idea. On the other hand it sounds entertaining.
    3) was there billboards along the trail advertising hostiles?
    4) I bet the porter would have had altitude sickness pills. 😊
    5) 63 degrees seems like specific number.
    6) I like the fact you didn’t have a porter, it let everyone around you know your dealing with your own level of INSANITY! 😂
    7) Wonder how heavy Christopher Columbus’ backpack was?
    8) I’m guessing the contour lines were really close together on any map you used.
    9) “knowing your ability” now that and interesting concept. Even though you big great.
    10) wow nice map!
    11) how many days did it take to get down?

      1. I have this odd confident that I can and will do everything haha. Of course I'm nuts, silly hahhaaa.
      2. Right -- and, right!?!
      3. Do you mean "teahouses"? Um, they don't really need to advertise because all there is -- is teahouses and trail, and trail, and teahouses haha. But, many do paint the name of their teahouse onto the tin roof of their teahouse so that you can see their name - and the names of all the others - as you are overlooking the villages.
      4. Well, the porters speed ahead of you with 3 million pounds of stuff on their neck - and all the porters have is the luggage they are paid to carry. But, the guides have medicine :) It was just too late; it's suppose to be taken before you reach high altitudes 😃
      5. It's so funny how I pretty much remember nothing from my videos the second I hit "publish" ☺ -- because then I'm off to edit the next handful of videos, so gosh haha. I can't remember a 63 degrees 🌞🌞
      6. This made me laugh hysterically!
      7. Probably reeeally heavy; that's probably he began people-stealing. It's hard to be bothered to carry your own backpack haha.
      8. Hm, they might have been...but I didn't use a map. Mostly because I couldn't mind any map, and also mostly because I presumed there would be thousands trekking right beside me, and I'm pretty sneaky. I'll follow anyone around ☺🥷
      9. Right! That's the thing that's so fascinating: you can't really know your ability until you right in the middle of attempting it 💗 That's what allows me to have such grand confidence; one just doesn't know better until they try. Until then -- unlimited confidence.
      10. Aw, thank you! It took me forever to find a good one 🎊
      11. Um... hmm... I'm not ready just yet to share the story of my descent, but that's a great question. 💟
I'm always so happy when you send your detailed and enumerated notes and questions haha. Please forgive me that it takes me a while to respond; the fall semester has started, and I'm pretty swamped. But, I'm so appreciative for each new video that you join me for, and I hope for many, many more video releases together!
