I guess that, in the books, the Stark children (especially post-resurrection Jon, Arya and Rickon) will take this villanous path after they return to Winterfell during TWOW!
So did Robb when he told that Lannister scout "Tell Lord Tywin that winter is coming for him. 20.000 northeners marching south to see if he really does shit gold"
This Stark/First Men backstory of thousands of years ago would make an incredibly epic new TV series. From the Children of the Forest and First Men being at war, to them creating the walkers to kill man, and ending with the Starks hiding the child that should have been given to the walkers, essentially the start of ending the treaty and beginning the Stark's incredible story to come a thousand years later to where we are today. There's two entire wars, bloodlines crossing, a peace treaty involving an insane marriage, the wall being built, and breaking of that treaty in the timeline. I mean there's a shit ton of story there that needs to be on screen.

"There must always be a Stark in Winterfell" Perhaps Stark kings/wardens know something no one else does. A secret passed from ruler to ruler. Ned's father Rickard knew it, and he passed the secret to his heir Brandon. But they both died and no one passed the secret to the next ruler, Ned. Perhaps that is why the WHite Walkers are coming back. Winter didn't come as long as the Starks upheld their part of the deal in whatever agreement they had. Jon indirectly defeated the night king. He gave Arya Needle. Ned found out and thought this girl might be cooking. He hired Syrio and he helped Arya in turn escape KL. She met Jaqen, the brotherhood without banners and Melisandre etc. Jon basically kickstarted her assassin journey and eventually that led to her killing the night king. I think George always interpreted the story to go this way as it was a important step for Arya into becoming a person who could kill the night king.
Hmm, Brandon the Breaker.. Could it be because he broke ''the agreement''? The agreement between men and white walkers that required human sacrifices to the walkers? If there ever was an agreement, then the Night King was just following it, Brandon the Breaker broke the agreement by killing him.

Winterfell is actually the german word for fur which animals develop when the weather becomes colder so they don´t freeze. So winter is winter and fell is fur is german. So from a german perspective, winterfell could be translated to protection against the cold

My personal theory is that Jon being born a half-Targaryen violated a sort of ancient treaty between the Others and the First Men, seen almost like violating the Geneva Convention when you build WMDs all of a sudden. Having access to dragons is pretty threatening to them, and it would also make sense if the Mad Queen storyline still takes place: true peace with the Others can only be achieved if they don't feel under threat by dragons, and Daenerys isn't likely to give up her dragons, so the only way may be to sacrifice her and the dragons.
IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE, it was always a bit suspicious that in a world with SO much political takeover, the Starks managed to stay in control thousands of years. Also this white walker deal aligns with the common knowledge that "Starks never break their vows", obviously it would have been very strictly taught between generations to make sure no one broke the vows to the night king. Maybe even the "he who passes the sentence must swing the sword" is connected, where the Starks always have to make the sacrifice themselves.
Sure, but not all starks were as noble as Ned. In fact most Starks (especially the further back in time you go) were quite comfortable ruling by force rather than by honor. It doesn’t necessarily change whatever circumstances they had with the white walkers though. It could be that they got really good at keeping their word out of fear of the white walkers and that eventually translated to them being good at keeping their word with fellow men
Ok I know that GRRM doesn't "owe" us a book. I know he works hard. But, this video is an example of a negative side effect of taking too much time. This video is brilliant. There are more videos like it where theories are discussed which are also brilliant. So GRRM is basically risking having a super underwhelming ending to his books the more time goes on because we are actively thinking of everything and how it could all pan out. The actual ending to ASOIAF has probably already been completely guessed at this point
That's not his problem, that's a problem with people placing unrealistic expectations on things and ruining them for themselves even when they are objectively good. Most people constantly do it and they never learn their bloody lesson. If you want a story the way you envisioned it, write a fanfiction, or better yet your own books. Any decent author shouldn't bend to their fans' whims, fan service (that's what it is) of any kind almost always makes a a product worse.
@@MattiaSangiorgi it might be his problem. It is a problem. I'm not entirely sure how you arrive at "unrealistic" here. Personally, I think we're allowed to have some expectations of having a book at this point, especially since he's written another companion book to the series and many hundreds of thousands of words for other projects since. I'm not trying to put any kind of spin on it, this is just a thing that is happening which I'm guessing is going to lead to a lot of disappointment all around. But please, if you think you can stop human beings from being human beings, then please try to convince everyone not to expect a continuation of the series.
@@beezzarro Thinking a book should take X time when you're not the author is already an unrealistic, entitled, and egocentric expectation. He's an author producing his creation, not a ghostwriter being given a job writing something, or a massive company catering to the whims of people too eager to consume the next slop than wait for quality. All I'm saying is the disappointment won't be on him, it will be on people's immature and idiotic way of relating to his work, with unrealistic expectations and the patience of a toddler, that's what I call your "humans beings being human beings", spoiled overgrown brats who have only themselves to blame for their lack of maturity and emotional self-regulation.
GRRM said in an interview that someone has already accurately guessed it and it’s out here… We just don’t know which “theory” it is!! I think he’s trolling us and will never release an ending…I mean, come on, there are stories in the story that he said he’ll never clarify. He’s given enough foreshadowing to the entire story ending in mystery. 😂
The theory in which Starks and White Walkers made peace is very interesting. It could be that they agreed for peace for 8000 years and now that time has run out they started their invasion once again. Stark words "The winter is coming" could be taken on the day of the peace to remind all Stark descendants that not only is a winter coming-THE winter is coming. It would kind of mean that White Walkers are as honorable as they are fierce keeping their truce for 8000 years.
It's worth noting that the Others are supposedly based of the Unseelie Fae of Irish folklore: winter faeries that were dangerous, dark, and beautiful to behold. The Night Queen fits the pop culture image of Queen Mab, the common ruler of the Unseelie. While the Unseelie were considered dangerous, and were usually antagonists in stories, they're not always considered "evil", and they always kept their word and honored agreements.
So i am pretty sure some people already said it somewhere here but jon has many dreams about the crypt in the first book were all his ancestors reawaken and their statues watching him with eyes of ice. Arya also rembers a prank robb and jon played on her and bran were robb lured them in the crypt and told them how the dead rise again in these crypts were then jon covered in backing pulver emerges playing the ghost might be foreshadowing the ending
Also the statues told him that he didn't belong there. The Starks of the past. I believe they said because he not ready for death yet. I believe he is a Stark but the show have the wrong sibling.
I've never thought about it much until now, but now I think on it, Jon has never seemed bothered by the cold. I could be wrong, but in none of his chapters or on the show as far as I can remember do we hear him complaining about being cold. I wonder if Starks do have some resistance to it, like the Targaryen's have an affinity with fire.
I'm re-reading GOT now and Jon hates the Wall at first. He was romanticizing it before he saw it, but the cold bothers him just as it bothers the others. He's not a complainer, but the book describes how he feels about the wind and the cold.

9:33 I don't know if this is any help but Martin could have been inspired by Vikings. They used to put traps and spells in the tombs of their dead to prevent them from coming back as fighting-zombies (also known as Draugar). And, if you think of it, Draugar are very similar to White Walkers! Some of them were considered to have hel-blár skin, which means "dark as death", where the "dark" wasn't really the color black, but rather blue.
I was so pissed we didn't get a damn swordfight. I was damn well expecting Jon and NK to have the duel of the ages, Obi Wan vs Anakin style. But no. Deus ex Machinima.
Dude, you nailed this!!! Like aspects or chunks of these theories have been know to me for nearly a decade now (I started reading the books and following theories after GoT season 1 aired) but man, it’s never been all out together so convincingly and into a narrative that feels just right for the end of this story as we go into the shows final season with the pieces as they are.
Both Ice and Fire (Stark/Targaryen) lines have strayed from what they once were. The Night King is actually Dany's equivalent, a long lost Stark taking back his rightful place in the North. That is why he comes for Brandon and not Jon. After taking vengeance on Brandon, the Night King will raise the dead in the crypt and once again rule the North. But he doesn't know Jon is the only embodiment of both houses, making him more powerful than either house line alone, since he can command dragons... Probably even the zombie dragon... To finally put the Night King down for good.
I hope this gets fully explored in Winds of Winter. He's taking his time, but an epic series deserves an epic ending and is surely the most difficult part to write.
It seems like Jon has always had a connection to women associated with fire. He was in love with Ygritte, who was always defined by her red hair and fiery temperament, then had an arc where he was deeply connected with Melisandre. Now he's in love with Danny. I wonder if there's any more symbolism to that beyond Jon's icy background creating contrast with these women.
I feel like that might be in part because Jon has openly attested to not liking "lady-like" women, mainly due to Catelyn's treatment of him and some sort of low-key sexism on his part. That's why I feel like him and Dany aren't going to end well. Ygritte & Melissandre had what you could consider bad endings in relation to Jon. They were both strong, independent women, and so was Dany; I figure that because he is competition to her sitting on the IT, and their conflicting goals, she will drop him out of irrational fear that he will "take what is hers". She still has the three treasons, if you remember, and she is just as paranoid about them as Cersei was. Who better to represent one of them than Jon, a possible love interest? It would be a good twist and squash any hope of a happy ending for the series, considering how most fans have waited for them to be together and seeing them become incompatible would be a GRRM esque thing to do.
@@C4-2565 It isn't. I understand having a preference but when it comes to what he doesn't "prefer", he oft resorts to outright shaming them and acts disgusted when they're brought up.
econaur dang when did he do this? he told Ygritte how much he loved her strength, and with the Red Woman I think he just saw thru her creepy sex manipulation, and he basically told her that he was grieving for Ygritte. I think some of the reason we see what a ho Theon is, is to have a contrast to Jon. Ygritte joked with him about being inexperienced. he never seems sexist to me. is it in the books that way
It would be heartbreaking if Jon will have to sacrifice himself to stop the war and embrace his whitewalker legacy, when he is the true heir of the Iron Throne. Not that Westeros actually deserves him, but still.
jon snow (well aegon targaryen) dying (or becoming a new night king) would solve an inherent problem in his relationship with danaerys, not only the aunt/nephew issue but also the real successor of the throne issue... So it would be just bittersweet as it allows a kind of a happy ending. or at least an ending without loose ends
I really enjoyed the insight in this video but tbh I most enjoyed the shoutouts to other channels, patrons, and artists. I love seeing community cohesion like that. Subbed.
The season didn't end yet, so I guess we should wait to see if there is more to it. It's pretty obvious that the White Walker plot ending in this episode would be a waste, furthermore Arya shouldn't been able to kill the Night King (her assassion clip was pretty awesome though due to the build up of the scene, please give her some credit, I'm way more disappointed with Bran who should be gathering intelligence at least (crow powers) and not even that he acomplished), ending my sentence that started a few lines back: Arya shouldn't been able to, so I expect a plot twist or hope for one xD.
Scrosseh There used to be other night kings. So if there are still White walkers, it means there is something creating them. We can suppose just like the lich king that there must be a night king and that Arya is going to be a night king
Jonathan Presthusson Spoiler for if you haven’t seen ep 3 from season 8 yet!! I don’t think it’s finished just yet. @@HPalternetive Not only that. The whole Bran story line is now just about the "who were Jon's parents" mystery. I thought his ark would have something to do with the white walkers and how to defeat them. And he had a vision about the NK's creation and his mark was somewhat important to the plot. But other than that, he didn't really reveal a lot on how to defeat the WW, nor did he give a backstory, or even get involved in the fight. He just flew some ravens around, got a bunch of people killed by being placed in the middle of Winterfell, making the army of the dead kill everyone in their way. And in the end he had to be saved by his sister, who was luckily trained by some assassins. Bran of course had nothing to do with Arya going to Bravos, or coming back, but without her, they would apparently be toast, since Bran had no plan to actually defeat the NK. Oh and remember when he traveled back in time and changed the past? He just decided to not use that really powerful ability. Why? Maybe the show will tell us why, but I really doubt it.

There was no Stark in Winterfell for some time after the Stark children fled and Sansa was held at Kingslanding. I wonder if that had anything to do with how close the white walkers were able to get.
i wonder about the timing of the battle at the Fist of the First Men and Bran's departure from Winterfell myself. If Bran's flight happens before the Fist, that might be a curious bit of evidence though this begs the question: are they coming because they believe their threat defeated or are they coming because an ally fell?

@Špagin Or, a bastard son like jon thought he was hence the snow and joining the nights watch. Could also be the first jon of stark? Would be some killer symmetry with one jon snow falling in love with a fair haired beauty causing destruction and the new one falling for a fair haired beauty bringing peace.
Špagin his brother’s name was Brandon Stark (Brandon the Breaker). If he were a legitimate Stark, why would other houses claim that he was one of theirs? But if he were a Snow, then there might well have been some confusion even at the time about his real identity. Here’s the thing: damnatio memoriae is actually a really hard thing to do. While the Starks would have been able to control what the other houses South of the Wall remembered: they would not have been able to control what the wildlings remembered. It’s totally plausible that the wildlings would remember the Night’s King’s real name and origin when no one else did. When Old Nan says he was a Stark, she might very well mean that he was a son of King Stark: not that he was necessarily legitimate. Also: if you are a sovereign King in a harsh land you would not let your legitimate brother take a vow to never have children. Just on the off chance someone kills off all of yours. But your bastard brother would probably choose the Wall. So yes actually: this is a totally plausible theory.
It is really kinda depressing how weak the last season turned out after watching detailed videos of analysis like this. There was so much cool lore and great backdrop for a great ending that could have also gone on for maybe a couple more seasons. Though while more seasons is kinda unrealistic they could have just given us an epic battle that really brought everything together and that was also at least really entertaining instead of poor visuals and an ending that made little sense. The White Walkers and the ancient secrets of the Stark's are such an epic creation and a much more complex, deeper, and interesting and epic conclusion could have came of it.

As long as there's a Stark in Winterfell, the dead within will stay dead. In the fifth book, they mention that the swords are disappearing from the crypt.
I'm surprised that in this video you don't talk about the fact that Jon is the product of Fire (Rhaegar) and Ice (Lyanna). You mention how the two houses are so juxtaposed and how the series is one of internal conflict but fail to wrap that all up in the perfect bow that is Jon. No doubt, I hope we can see an ending that doesn't rush to end itself as fast as the show seems to be so we can see these internal struggles played out to the max.

It is also strange that Targareyens did married into other houses but they never married a Stark, until R&L. Which is very strange considering it was basically a marriage between ice and fire that started the whole damn thing. Maybe something is shady here.
I still believe theories like these to be true in the end. Even though the show‘s finale was horrible writing, I‘m still counting on George to not disappoint us!
What if Jon decides to sacrifice his humanity for the World, but can't? You talked about the Starks having ice in their blood, but Jon is also half Targaryen. He has Dragonfire in his blood too, and right now he is already a Zombie, but one revived by the power of the Red God, the God of fire. Maybe, if the Night King tries to turn him that leads to some kind of "conflict within" him, his Targaryen blood against his Stark blood, the Red God against the Cold Gods of the north, heat against cold. I could imagine that with Jon being kind of a proxy for both sides, this would mean that both concepts/deities will finally end up in a direct confrontation and thus maybe end the ongoing power struggle between Summer and Winter, Fire and Ice.
I think the same, but i do not see a posible end to this conflict, other than an explosion of some sort or he turning and "spoiling" the spell of control of the walkers with his fire within causing an explotion, that's for sure
So, if Jon has both bloods, he can defeat both of them, both fire and ice. He has in his blood, the Ice to defeat Fire, and the Fire to defeat Ice. Leaving him the Ultimate Conqueror of ALL Knowing Jon, probably in a nice, "lets all get along or else" kind of way.
They don't actually bury every Stark in the crypts though. Just the ones who were Kings of Winter or Wardens of the North (Ned also buried Brandon and Lyanna, but usually that doesn't happen).
TheRandomestRedHead Only the Lords of Winterfell since Aegon the Conquerer. Every Lord of Winterfell has been Warden of the North, courtesy of Aegon. Damn I guess you’re right!! :) :)
If the iron swords in the crypts are there to make sure the dead Starks don't rise frm the grave as white walkers, and Ned's bones are still lost somewhere on their way back to Winterfell... Well, I'm looking forward to the Sean Bean Zombie cameo in the finale.
Hey, we are talking about bones and not the whole body. Ned was beheaded and so far, no Wight was seen without the head, yet. And yes, we saw a Wight with bones protruding, but not a whole skeleton. Besides, imagine poor Ned being a skellington. That would be EXTREME disgrace to his memory
You forget one thing. Jon is actually Aegon Targaryen. He has both ICE and Fire blood. The title of the series is actually "a song of ice and fire". So I think the end will involved both stark and targaryen . In what way I am not sure...
Honestly it makes perfect sense, The Starks are descendents of White Walkers as Targaryens are descendents of Dragons, Jon is the descendent of Both Bloodlines, The Song of Ice and Fire. In the end he will go beyond the wall to be new Night's King
Watching a lot of these videos something I really like about Game of thrones is how much the books trust and respects the reader, giving so many characters the same name, like how there are like a million Brandon's
WAIT!!! Gilly didn't take her baby South. In the books, her baby was swapped out for the Wildling king's baby in order to keep the king's baby safe from Mel who was set on making a royal sacrifice. This is a HUGE detail, but it still fits with the hidden identify theme, probably more so.
The white walkers coming to claim back their ancient bloodline after Jon is born, a pact made by his ancestors that any descendant with blood mixed with ice and fire is theirs to claim, making Jon a "prince" that was "promised"
Can you talk about Rickon, why did he spend most of the time off-screen, which makes he relatively non-exist comparing to all other Starks? I always wonder why all siblings has their own story line while he just end up showing up before his dead?
First time watching this video, but I've been thinking about the 'there must be a stark in winterfel' being a part of the spell that kept them asleep. Then lyliana ran away, lord stark, and elder rikkon were burned and ned marched to war. No starks were in the north, the spell was broken and they started to rise. The north remembers I think also has a much deeper meaning, but they have forgotten since the targarians took over the throne. Maybe something to do with starks manning the wall, remembering the treaty, or a stark being in the north

Perhaps Stark kings/wardens know something no one else does. A secret passed from ruler to ruler. Ned's father Rickard knew it, and he passed the secret to his heir Brandon. But they both died and no one passed the secret to the next ruler, Ned. Perhaps that is why the WHite Walkers are coming back. @@ARKGamerYtfuck the ending. And fuck the season 8.
It could be that they got really good at keeping their word out of fear of the white walkers and that eventually translated to them being good at keeping their word with fellow men
That ending was so profound... then ¨choose between banging his aunt or becoming a popiscle king¨.

Winds of Winter currently has a higher word count than the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, which also took 11 years to write
That also describes the Children of the Forest, who are connected to the Others.
With Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen genes no wonder he's so damned good with a sword!
Targaryans are also known to have truthful, prophetic dreams. If Jon is a targaryan, well then he might have seen the future
Maybe Winterfell isn't built just to keep walkers out, maybe its built to keep white walkers in 😱
Man you gave me chills
I've never thought about it much until now, but now I think on it, Jon has never seemed bothered by the cold. I could be wrong, but in none of his chapters or on the show as far as I can remember do we hear him complaining about being cold. I wonder if Starks do have some resistance to it, like the Targaryen's have an affinity with fire.
Starks have a +50 Frost Resist as their racial bonus.
I'm re-reading GOT now and Jon hates the Wall at first. He was romanticizing it before he saw it, but the cold bothers him just as it bothers the others. He's not a complainer, but the book describes how he feels about the wind and the cold.

0:39 "and Jon, an undead, prophetic, warrior king" this is how i want people to describe me in the future.
"Surely the story won't end with a sword fight"
I'm sad now.
you got likes thought I’d tell you
I hope this gets fully explored in Winds of Winter.
Just realised that. Nice point
@@urmominc904 its not being low-key sexist, its called having a preference
@@C4-2565 It isn't. I understand having a preference but when it comes to what he doesn't "prefer", he oft resorts to outright shaming them and acts disgusted when they're brought up.
econaur dang when did he do this? he told Ygritte how much he loved her strength, and with the Red Woman I think he just saw thru her creepy sex manipulation, and he basically told her that he was grieving for Ygritte. I think some of the reason we see what a ho Theon is, is to have a contrast to Jon. Ygritte joked with him about being inexperienced. he never seems sexist to me. is it in the books that way
i cant get over the flat rooftops of winterfell in a snow heavy region ¦ |
Half the population would be dying of roof cave-ins.
Wtf Brandon
Maybe that's why their motto is "Winter is coming". They figured it was cheaper to just change the motto into a warning than build proper roofs.
Are they flat in the books too?
Well that’s it then. Brandon the builders spells for Winterfell are magic rooftops! XD
It would be heartbreaking if Jon will have to sacrifice himself to stop the war and embrace his whitewalker legacy, when he is the true heir of the Iron Throne. Not that Westeros actually deserves him, but still.
Tyrion (Targaryen) is the true heir to the Iron Throne.
This is what will Happen, mark my words
Not the true heir
@@danielbreedlove wouldn't make sense since they haven't set that up in the show at all. More likely the night king is the third dragon rider.
jon snow (well aegon targaryen) dying (or becoming a new night king) would solve an inherent problem in his relationship with danaerys, not only the aunt/nephew issue but also the real successor of the throne issue...
So it would be just bittersweet as it allows a kind of a happy ending. or at least an ending without loose ends

Season 8 episode 3 is probably the most dissapointing thing i have ever seen. The nightking and whitewalkers were completely wasted in the end
Jonathan Presthusson
Spoiler for if you haven’t seen ep 3 from season 8 yet!!
I don’t think it’s finished just yet. There was a weird interaction between Bran and the Night King before the Night King tried to kill him. They were staring at each other and instead of grabbing his spear thingy, he tilted his head in a sort of confusion or recognition. I think there is more to Bran and the Night King... maybe he is the reincarnation of the Night’s king
ThatAlienGirl -
I don't think he tilted his head in confusion. I think he was just reaching for the sword in his back.
Alexandr Yanenko Nooooo look at it properly again. He was just staring at him when he tilted his head and then straightened his head again. Then he had a look of confusion or I don’t know and then after a few seconds he reached for his sword.
This is sounding more plausible specially after that last scene
Why aren't more people exploring this angle? Why does everyone want Bran to be a time traveling Night King? Why can't they just have this super awesome ancestral connection instead?!

And if it’s too reticules then can you guys stick to the chest realistic style storytelling we all loved?!

@@kevinw712 I have the exact same problem to the exact same magnitude and am also petrified that game of thrones will have ice spiders, let's just hope they use the budget for more productive things than tormenting their arachnaphobic audience. You should be more worried about the upcoming prequel though, that may be set during the original long night when old Nan stated the ice spiders lived. In all honesty, I doubt that the ice spiders will be included, we've seen many close up views of the army of the dead now and not one shows presence of them.
@zyklon b yeah, you're right, as much as I dislike spiders, those scenes would be fairly awesome and unique so to not film them yet still include spiders would be stupid. What about Benjen Stark. I feel like he makes it plausible that ancient starks were half white walkers
nah search a benjen stark vid it explains
Adam Riley we could have had a better send off for benjen, but instead D&D said they had to have a goddamn zombie polar bear take up 1/4 of that episode. The writing has become pretty shit since the source material ran out
He did say the children of the forest did something to him so he wont die...right?
I believe it was in season 7... I thought white walkers killed Benjen Stark when he came to aid the brotherhood gang??
Well, not really, since that's not how it happened. However, I do think that that's how Jon would look like.
Remember when Ygritte said that "Jon Snow" was an evil name when they first met? What if the Night's King's name was Jon Snow?
And in the final, Season 8 ep 3...huh, i'm too disapointed, too, too disapointed about the Night King

Rickon and bran took them
I'm surprised that in this video you don't talk about the fact that Jon is the product of Fire (Rhaegar) and Ice (Lyanna).

After 8000 years, there wouldn't be a lot of Night King left in any of the Starks anyway
It fits nicely with his ability to be impartial--like bringing Wildlings into the fold.
