    Thanks for your hardware restoration video! I needed to replace the front door exterior hardware because the gold finish was so badly weathered - the inside is fine. Your recommendation for sanding and using the isopropyl alcohol got the pieces nicely prepped. I wasn’t so sure about the final finish until it fully dried but the matte clear is a beautiful finish over the paint. Timely instruction and great tips!

    @Tom Gunn Tools how did the hardware hold up? I did this to a few doors and the pain wore off in less than a year. But I didn't do any clear coats. I'm curious to know how yours held up.

    Primer first: I know the paint say's "Primer and Paint", but I still prime anyway. Old habit. Painting ships in the Merchant Maine, we would tint the Red-Lead primer with the final coat paint. After three prime coats, we were very close to the final color, and it helped us keep track of what number coat of primer, 1, 2 or 3 we were working on before applying the final coat. Letting it dry in the sun is a good idea. I use a heat gun. Got the idea from a guy who does commercial restoration of automotive convertible top hardware. It seems to even out and flatten the surface.

    • @TomGunnTools
      @TomGunnTools  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Self etching primer is needed for bare metal. In the case of these handles I don’t think it needed. Most of these rustoleum products have a primer in them.

      Still holding up well and happy with results, the door gets moderate use. I noticed recently there is one slight wear mark due my wife’s ring always catching it in one spot where she opens it. Not really a big deal, still looks good and could always be touched up down the road if needed.

      I painted our front door hardware at the weekend. Turned out well although I did manage to cause a little chip by hitting two parts together! Smoothed it out with wire wool and resprayed, and no one has noticed yet, so think I got away with it. New hardware would have been $400, paint etc was less than $50. Thanks again.
