DIY Painted Door Knobs

  • For only $15, I would definitely recommend this DIY painted door knobs project! It really didn’t take that much time or effort but makes such a difference! This is an inexpensive way to upgrade old silver and gold door knobs! It will save you about $150, compared to replacing them. And to replace them, you still have to put in almost the same amount of effort, so I say, why not try to paint them and save some cash?!

    Self Etching Primer: www.lowes.com/...
    Oil Rubbed Bronze Paint & Primer: www.lowes.com/...
    Insulation board that I used to hold the door knobs and hardware while I sprayed them: www.lowes.com/...
    The strike plates are not worth painting because they will definitely chip! Luckily, they are only $1 to replace! www.lowes.com/...

    Well done. I think you should wear gloves, goggles and a mask when working with these sprays.

    If I may provide you a piece of advice when painting (any type of painting you do) cover the pieces, parts or items, especially if you’re leaving them exposed to the elements outside. Covering them will prevent dust and other minute particles and debris from adhering to your freshly painted parts, that wind can blow on to them, which can ruin your hard work and paint job. Great job on the prep-work. As with any painting job, prep work is what gives your paint longevity and a much better finish IMO. Great job! Looks awesome.

    Nice. I do have a question on how well the finish held up. I've seen gold or bronze light fixtures refinished with Rust-Oleum 249131 11 oz Spray Paint, Oil Rubbed Bronze Metallic and they look awesome however door knobs are something you're constantly touching.

    Where was your mask and especially if you have sensitivity. Good job though, but please protect yourself with a mask.

    Does the paint "fill up" the key area?

  • @gooddaymate1171
    @gooddaymate1171 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I did mine and used the same brand self etching primer and black paint. I even used the same brand clear coat. I did 3 coats primer, 3 coats paint, and 3 coats clear coat. After letting it cure for a few days, the key hole area still get chipped and scratched by keys.

    It's funny how so many people want to know what I'd like to know: how did it hold up? I saw a video on rub'n buff that might be worth a look see.

    From a chemical perspective self etching primer is for brand new bare metal, not for coated or painted or sanded metal. You’d be better with a high bonding primer

    Hi Kendall, I see you don't post videos too often, but it would be nice if you would respond to the many comments here about how well the paint held up on your door knobs. My experience is that even with sanding the paint does not hold up, especially outdoor facing knobs. Anyway, as relatively easy as this initial procedure was, if it doesn't hold up it really is not worth the bother. Make sense?

    Hello! I am thinking of doing the same thing, but with my passage door lever that is for my apartment's front door. I was wondering how well your paint has stood without chipping since you didn't use a top coat (I realise it's only been maybe 2 months). Would you recommend a top coat if you had to do it over again?

    • @gooddaymate1171

      Hi there! I’m so sorry that I wasn’t clear! I did 2 coats of the self etching and then 2 coats of oil rubbed bronze spray paint. They are all linked in the description. Thanks for watching!!
