  • How to refinish a chrome faucet and spray paint it black
    Below are the items I used for this project. Any automotive primer and enamel will work. If you choose to spray your faucet indoors make sure there is enough ventilation as the fumes are very strong while painting.

    Try steel wool in place of the sandpaper...it will follow the contours much better. And make sure to clean with iso alcohol before painting.

    My contractor installed a chrome showerhead and I really want a matte black one. It would be too much money to remove and install a new one. I've seen many different youtube videos but yours is the one I will do because of the detailed steps you both took. When I do redo mine.... I'll use the steps. the process to ensure you get credit.     Thank you for this video so hard to find step by step videos of changing chrome color .. currently I want to change my fixture sconces plate from chrome to a white. Now feel more confident to do it.❤

    Would definitely put down a sheet of plastic under all that. Overspray will land about 2-3 feet on the floor around painting area.

    Thanks for sharing this! Quick question: I completely botched the black finish while handling the handles while not fully dry. Would I need to re-sand down to the metal or would you recommend a lighter-grit sandpaper to smooth out the finish and start from the primer phase?

    Hi I am really finding it hard to find a style in black that I like so contemplating this
    How's it holding up since it's a faucet I don't want to risk it

    do you NEED to wait 48 hours between the black paint and the protective top coat?

      It just needs to be fully cured. Spray paints will vary, the can should say cure times on them. We could have done ours the next day.

      This is in a guest bathroom and is holding up well. I did an update video here. th-cam.com/video/v6sSMPU5w4k/w-d-xo.html Since this update the only areas that could use touching up is right round the faucet screen that cant be seen, I scrubbed very hard here trying to remove hard water.

    LOL you started sanding and painting at noon !!!! and finished a midnight!! NEXT time put your pieces closer so you have to empty 2 cans to paint 4 pieces

      This is how we DIY. We start late, take forever, complain most of the time and end up happy in the end.

    This is a very good video! 👍👍👍 Will this work for a drain in a shower? I'm just wondering if this would hold up from continuous water contact. I'd appreciate your advice on this point. Thanks!

      I think it would hold up to water contact but may have issues with hard scrubbing while cleaning.

      @@moderngreyfarmhouse Thanks for your reply. I may have to bite the bullet and just replace it, but it's surrounded by tile, so it won't be that easy. Don't want to break the tile to get it out. I'll have to put my thinking cap on for that job and see what others recommend. 🤔

      @@audiophileman7047 you could try it and see how it goes. If it stars to peel off then it may not be hard to remove completely. My best advice for its staying power is to be sure use the automobile primer then paint then sealer.

      Its holding up well in our guest bath. We did 3 coats of clear enamel.

      No, we have a valve under the sink that can shut off the water to that faucet only

    Do you need to primer to fully cure before the black?

      We sprayed the black about 2 hours later. It was in October in the desert so it wasn’t too hot, too humid or too cold and 2 hours was enough for it to fully dry

    You said this was placed in a guest bathroom so I think there is no much use of it as in a master bathroom. Do you think this would last well in a bathroom that is more frequently used than a guest bathroom?

      Ive seen others use it in heavier traffic bathrooms and it has worked out. Be sure not to skip the primer as its very important. Personally I wouldn't spray an expensive faucet you aren't willing to let go of in the event it doesnt work out.

      SO far it has held up well in a guest bathroom. The automotive primer and sealer is are key steps that shouldnt be skipped.

    Can you do this with same primer and clear enamel but use a Rustoleum Metallic spray paint? Specifically the oil rubbed bronze color.

      @@moderngreyfarmhouse I'm pretty sure I did something wrong then. I did the sanding, the auto primer, the paint. Waited 72 hours. Then hit with the enamel and it bubbled and peeled. Thoughts on what I did wrong?

      @@gmangman2098 hmm Im not sure what could have happened. Maybe the climate? We did this when the weather was in the 70-80's dry climate.

      So far there are no chips and no peeling. The automotive finishes are the key to the durability

    Used rustoleum auto primer, black matte and it put a fuzzy, textured coating????

      That is strange. Ours is smooth. Unsure if weather plays a part but ours was done in weather that was around 75 degrees with minimal humidity. It’s possible you can sand and reapply. If you do that is get new cans in case 1 of the 2 cans were defective.

    Just wait till you or a plumber has to do work on the faucet that is if you can break the paint from the threads to unscrew the parts to access the valves and not to mention doing any repairs will damage that paint job you did so all that time , energy, money, is going to be wasted

      At that point since Im paying a plumber I would just get a new faucet and have him install it. Its now Oct 2022, 2 years later and I feel I have gotten my time and moneys worth.

      @@moderngreyfarmhouse your time and money not mine but it was a good idea as DiY project just wasn't fully well thought out if would've took the time to take apart the handles and the base painted them individually then you would be able to gain access to the valves if need repair or replacement as far as hiring a plumber it's going to be costly MOST plumbers charge 2 hr minimum + travel time before they even set foot on any property then the repair time and parts are added TRUST me it get's costly fast i did plumbing for 10 yrs however they make repair kits that can be found at any home repair stores or hardware stores and it's much cheaper than hiring a plumber also you can go on the manufacturer's websites and I'm sure they would have the color that you tried to do in your DIY project most of the manufacturer's have a assortment of colors and styles

      In the video I explain that we had bought one and switched it out but it didn’t fit correctly. I could’ve bought the same brand and it would’ve worked but those ones at the time were pretty pricey.

      @@moderngreyfarmhouse oh gotcha. Im sorry. I fast forwarded most videos . We have an old house and had the same issue with the plumbing not fitting a brand new vanity. So my husband had to cut the back of vanity open.. also I will never buy from lowes again. Everything we buy never lasts long at all. So now we have to paint bathroom fixtures that isnt even 5 months old. I'll most likely have to do it on my own. Wish me luck

    this seems like soooooooooooooo many steps and coats. like surely there is an easier way..... (not that there is, i'm just sayin. 9 separate coats? probably worth it to just grab new faucets at that point. that's a LOT of time, plus spray paint money...)

      It looks a lot harder than it actually was. We had tried a new faucet and it didn’t fit properly so we went this direction instead of trying another new one.

      still might try it but with some kind of cheat code if i see a consolidated method lol. i think my mind will explode over all the repetition and effort otherwise.
