You're right - I've been to the meetings where the consul decided that real knife people never use notes again. Almost got kicked out of the meeting for my notes damn
This is my favorite Cold Steel fixed blade in my possession! I have the VG1 San Mai 3 version from Japan. I always wanted a Cold Steel knife that was made in Japan in case they decided to relocate. Good thing I bought the knife before they actually did relocate their manufacturing business to Taiwan. Besides, the American Tanto Point has Japanese roots, so I got a Japanese Tanto from Japan! Yay!!!
Bought my Cold Steel Recon Tanto, way back in the 80's. Blade is fully blued, sheath is stiffened nylon. It is marked Cold Steel, CarbonVTM, Made in USA. the other side its stamped with Recon Tanto. I carried on amny a hike in Yellowstone. Its a good knife.
I've had a recon tanto in carbon 5 and I've never had a problem, ever.i belive I bought it in the 90s from cold steel. I have had a.nice amount of their knives. My magnum 2 tanto with the San Mei steel is a wicked knife.
Hi there, Very good review - even if is a table top review - totally agree with your arguments ! I bought the Recon Tanto in SK5 - and, to my total surprise ,it proved to be a very good slasher ... I've tested on some cardboard boxes and I was stoned to see that it outperformed significantly bigger blades at cutting through (pretty thick) cardboard .... It must be related with the continous sweep / curve of the blade ... And it was a total surprise especially that I abandoned it in a corner for some time, not even bothered to test it until 2 days ago - and I was totally shocked : it outperformed bigger and more expensive blades ...huh ... Oh yeah, I've read a comment of someone on Amazon - which (as he said) is a military contractor who stated that although he owns hundreds of blades this (Recon Tanto in SK5) would be his choice for going into action ... Oh, and other thing - that I've discovered : it's absolutelly devastating on back slash-es ...basically hitting cardboard with the tip in reverse is doing great damage ... Yeah, totally agree with you (and with that guy that commented on Amazon) : it might be the perfect blade ...
Great review! Just ordered mine today cause I really like the look and feel of the San Mai SRK. Gotta have the matched set!!! I've used the HELL out of my regular SRK & Recon Tanto so I'm pretty sure of what to expect from their "super" versions... Can't wait to get it!
Agreed. I’m considering attempting a thin leather wrap, over the rubber. To give it a warmer more natural feel and look. Might not work, but worth trying
I made a Micarta handle for my old recon tanto, same shape, just a bit more shape. Now I don't understand why the didn't do it. They do G10 for the warcraft(daft name) that is what the should have done with the new San mai 3 in vg10!
Hi there, In my opinion the Recon Tanto would be the best bet ... Ok, maybe not as tough as Warcraft Tanto but that sweeped blade makes all the difference in slashing ... Totally agree with the guy making this review : it might be the perfect blade ... And I guess you would be pretty happy with the SK5 version - which is pretty affordable - is good japanese steel - pretty tough - basically on par with 1085 - 1090 high carbon steel ...
@@lucianbrad4291 i have both and prefer the SRK in San Mai because of the utility aspect but im also biased against tanto blades. Dont get me wrong i obviously dig tantos(hence owning the recon tanto in san mai) but as a self defense/utility knife, a tanto blade is more effective with more length. Some may disagree of course, just my opinion.
@@suwupreme2101 i never understood "batoning" seems like a surefire way to ruin an edge and dull a knife that should be sharp and at the ready, for whenever you may need it. A small hatchet is arguably small enough to include it in your gear or bug out bag, plus ur secondary will always be ready. Just my point of view on the whole baton thing.
It will baton perfectly better than even the SRK! I have both the SRK and Recon tantos in SK5 and VG10. I used both for a couple years hunting/fishing/camping. I even used the Recon exclusively for 3 months last year doing a trip from Florida to Maine stopping to camp and fish everywhere in between. I baton wood three times a day for my rocket stove and creating tinder, scraping fatwood, use with ferrocerium rods. The Recon SK5 was perfect in all regards even better than the Srk!
Real knife people don't use notes sweetheart, epic failure.
Agreed. That's why I'm not a "Real knife people"
Lets see your review🤷♂️
lol pinned to the top to be shamed
@@TulkOrkan I like the CS recon-Tanto so much that I have 4 of them ...

Cold Steel always good to see.
Indeed
Reviewing a Cold Steel is always a solid choice. Like that blade btw!
Haha thanks! Me as well!

Just ordered one, it's expensive but hope it's worth it!

Cold Steel For Life!

try the sk5 version, the finish will wear paintwise, but not steelwise unless you really smack it up.
Agree, just awesome.
My dad has one of this knife. An he carries it everywhere he goes even to work 😅😅 my dad really really loves this knife 🔪
Just picked one up today, $96 out the door, just couldn't pass it up. I was looking for the sk 5 version but for the price had to get the. San mai. 👍
Well worth the upgrade, in my opinion
Yes sir, Ended up getting the sk5 version also, it rides in my sun visor of my truck just in case the san mai stays on the nite stand 👍🏻
Great deal!!! I wouldn't of passed it up either!
Almost perfect to me, just gotta give it a micarta handle and kydex sheaths and its practically heirloom quality

How does this compare with master tanto? Which one is better? This one or the master 6 inch?
Oooff if I had to pick I’d go master tanto
cool knife
get you! ha.
I'm torn between this, and the Marauder,, but I think I'm favouring the big Bowie at the moment,, what do you think, ??
Ohhhh I think I’d go with the recon.
I certainly wouldn't compare it to that Kbar. Good review though, buy me one thanks.
Is the san mai more corrosion resistant?
Great review. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
get some metal polish and rub it in with a cloth, it will get rid of light scratches and look way better
Good call
does this knife have a full tang? I can't seem to get an answer anywhere.
It’s full length, but not full tang (not same depth as the blade). It’s grounded about 20% top and bottom.
Can i baton with this one no problem? Its the only Variation available in my country along with sk5 version
Im a big fan of San mai but idk if it'll hold up in batonning
It sure will! Very tough blade

WHAT IS THE COLOR ON THE TANTO CALLED ?
Not sure what ya mean by that :D
Stainless?
Or SK5, black teflon.
It is VG-1
Mine is VG10 guaranteed.
Which is harder vg10 or sk 5
@@songokuo5131vg-10 is much more tougher than sk5
IS IT A FULL TANG
It is
It's not a traditional full tang but it's a tapered hidden tang that runs to the end.
handles wear with lots of use? This is a fight knife, hope ppl are not using it that much lmao
SOME SAY THEY ARE MADE IN JAPAN AND SOME IN OTHER PLACES , HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT IS REAL AND WHAT IS FAKE ?
They used to be made in Japan, now they are produced in Taiwan. I don’t believe there are copies made of the recon tanto currently
not quite perfect, i had to stop it when i got it out of the box. but then, i strop most knives out of the box.
Me,no care
Me have Kobun
Kobun,,,Good
You,knife too expensive
Me,no like...
