I wanna say I had the recon tanto in Iraq, back in 05. If not it was very similar. Loved the hell out of that thing. Unfortunately it was in a footlocker with other knives and swords that mysteriously went missing when the movers unloaded my stuff after I got out
I carried the original recon tanto with brass pommel and guard while in the 82nd Airborne loved it, lost that one when a cop picked me up hitchhiking, and I had to ditch it before getting in the front seat for a ride home, went back to pick it up the next day and it was gone, found it on the self at Jim's pawn shop where they wanted TWO TIMES what I paid for it. Skip forward to Iraq and got another original .... LOVE this bomb proof blade!

I definitely agree about the important role that daggers filled, and that they probably dispatched more people on the battlefield than the sword. However, I wouldn't just say that about Japan, I would say that that was the case across the board, including Medieval Europe, where the armor was even more advanced than that of the Japanese.
The main reason medieval armor and weapons became more advance was because Japan's land is not as rich in metals as europe. This is why the katana was made to a certain size and samurai armor is a mix of metals and wood
