My dad's method of driving home the "stay away from meth" talk was to take me and my sister to meet his cousin (who had also been one of his best friends growing up) that has to live in an assisted living facility because he OD'd on meth and fried his brain to the point that he has no short term memory retention. He still thinks it's 1980 something, that him and my dad hung out just last week, they're both still in their 20's, my dad doesn't have kids yet, and his parents are still alive despite the fact that they've been gone for nearly a decade. After my dad visited with him for a little bit, he took us out to the lobby of the place for about ten minutes before taking us back into his cousin's room again, and his cousin didn't even remember that we had just been there. They had the exact same conversation that they had before, and to him, it was the first time it had happened. Real eye-opener for sure.
Every time I play this song for someone, especially if they or someone they love is affected by meth, they ALWAYS break down during the end. An amazing song, this love version is my favorite.
Great take on this lyrically. There really is a DIFF LEVEL. Couldn’t have said it better. I too love “Stone” but, like you, not in the same way. You should check out his track Gone Away. I think you would really like that one as well....and Big respect to you for sticking to your guns in regards to letting thee entire sing hit ya before you comment. Hardly anyone does that. Thanks for that brotha
I survived meth, saw a lot of people die, and I was one who was “laughing through the tears.” This song crushes me every time. A lot of faces come flooding back in my mind. Also, I checked out that song by Lost Dog Street Band, and I gotta say you got a good ear for good country / US folk music. Thanks for that.
FUN FACT MAN!!!!! i live in tyler tx and down the road from me is the strip club called TIME OUT OFF OF 155. and plus here is a funny story , when cody (the lead singer) was singing this song at cowboys (tyler's dance hall) he pause the song and said " i know all y'all dirty f**cks are going to time out after this, so sing it loud and proud because this is our town!" and in that moment you can hear everyone yell that part loud and proud.
Molly Tuttle’s “Good enough” is fantastic. Her clawhammer guitar technique is unique and impressive! She’s collaborated a lot with Jason Isbell and toured with him at one point.
Whiskey Myers, Wade Bowen, Stoney LaRue are part of what we call The Texas Music scene. An independent music culture away from Nashville and their idea of what country music is. Also try Chris Knight, Blackberry Smoke and Uncle Lucius.
This is the song that got me hooked on Whiskey Myers. Great breakdown! Hill Country Devil, Rata Get Fat for the rage. Kerr County Dopesick Blues for the beaty and sadness of the lyrics. Female artists, Lee Ann Womack, Long Black Veil. Shannon Jae Ridout, It Ain't Right.
First video of yours that I've seen :) I was (pleasantly) shocked to hear the names you mentioned in the intro -- even in the States, "beer advert" country music is better known by far, and more widely played on most radio stations. "Alternative" country is starting to get more respect and attention, but I'm still more likely to hear it via NPR than from any mainstream source.
I love Whiskey Meyers, and this song I can sadly relate to. My cousin suffered from depression & used to laugh while she cried. She took her life the same year my daughters dad died of a heroin overdose. I could see things changing with both but neither could hear anyone else. I watched them go in my own way. Thanks. Love your' reaction.
Great reaction man, I think you nailed it with the lyrics. Ive always kind of looked at it from the whole "outside looking in" perspective, except he sees it from her point view, the inside looking out. They werent together, but he grew up with her and saw everything that happened, so he understands why shes broken. That made him love her even more, maybe if she had allowed herself to love him things wouldve turned out differently and he thought she should know that. Sometimes we say whats in our hearts when its too late. We only get one shot in this life, tell those we love how we feel before its too late, especially if theyre going through something. Many lessons to be learned in this one in my opinion. On a side note, the bar looks good man! I cant help but notice the hangers on the shelf behind you, they all break the joint in the wood on the wall evenly, Im OCD like that, my wife says Im anal when it comes to things like that! Lol Im an HVAC mechanic, have done plumbing, electrical and HVAC work for 20+ years, been in construction my whole life. I was taught that if youre gonna do it, do it right. Anyway, looks good brother!
I'm a huge fan of Whiskey Myers, great band out of east Texas, hope you keep reacting to them. Kacee Musgraves is a great female country music singer that you should check out, follow your arrow and blowing smoke are two of her more popular songs.
Female artist Morgan Wade, check out the song "The Night". She's an upcoming artist that has an incredible voice. The video is titled "Morgan Wade - The Night | OurVinyl Sessions"
I know you have done a Sierra Ferrell song but you said you wanted to hear another song of hers and I think either "Rosemary" or "Jeremiah" would be a great choice. There is also a family bluegrass band named The Petersens, they have a song named "California" that was composed and performed by the oldest sister in the group. Great review as always! This song reminded me of acoustic grunge from the '90s.
I'm from dangerfield texas (the area that this song came from) not only have I lost my first love to hard drugs but my cousin my great aunt and 6 other friends I had in my small high school like class sizes of 100 ish
Kylie Rae Harris is a pretty good female Texas country artist. Unfortunately she passed away not too long ago but she's my favorite female artist. "Sticks and Stones" is a really good one by her or "Revelation ft. Zane Williams" (live) is a really good one too. Zane is another good Texas artist you should add to the list as well.
I always looked at the broken window as a metaphor of your own perception being damaged. Like he came from a negative perception in his own mind which is why he found beauty in this also damaged person. The window being synonymis with your eyes, or the lenses you view the world, and that their own perception was warped in contradiction to society.
I remember hearing my aunt died when I was 14. I was shocked, her two kids 14 and 9 and her ex husband weren’t though. It was a shock I guess not really “surprising” but just so sad. My uncle’s still pretty broken over it. Him and his daughter had a falling out shortly after and havent talked in about 3 years. I feel bad for both of them, it’s too bad bad things happen in this world nobody deserves to go through that.
Sarah Shook & The Disarmers - "Heal Me", "Dwight Yoakam", "The Bottle Never Let Me Down" Charlie Marie - "Shot In The Dark" Tessy Lou Williams - "Why Do I Still Want You" Gillian Welch - "Caleb Meyer" (murder ballad), "The Way It Will Be", "Hard Times", "Annabelle", "Tear My Stillhouse Down" Amanda Shires - "White Feather", "You Are My Home" Ashley McBryde - Girl Going Nowhere Most of those are independent. I think Ashley McBryde is the only one you might hear on the radio.

As far as some ladies to check out in this vein... you need to check out Emily Scott Robinson... an amazing songwriter... I love “Overalls” “The Dress” and “Run” all deal with some heavy subject matter. Also Tyler Childers wife Senora May (Lady May) has music and an album out there that you should check out... “Only Want You” and “Don’t Need a Lot” are two solid tunes. Sarah Shook & the Disarmers are great... songs like “Fuck Up” “Good As Gold” and “Dwight Yoakam” are solid. Keep up the solid work brother!
Appreciate that brother! We're growing, but I'd be happy to be doing it at this level for a while. Just depends on whether TH-cam decides to show it to people :') Appreciate the recommendations. I might switch out the Tyler Tuesday for one week only to shine some light on Senora May! Sarah Shook is playing at a country festival near me next year, so I'll check her music out!
For a good female singer you should check out Dorothy(she's a badass), The Civil Wars doing Barton Hollow, and Jinger doing their song Pisce (live studio session) probably a little heavy for you.
Most of the new batch of female country artists give me a toothache they’re so pop! Ashley McBryde- “The First Thing I Reach For” is straight country- I think she great! Please add her to your list. I like the way Whiskey Meyers puts a story into song. The song and the singer reminds me of a young Neil Young from the early 70’s singing “ The needle and the damage done” , “ Old Man”. I would categorize Whiskey Myers as more of a southern rock band but this is very opinionated. This song has a country feel but a lot of their music has more of a rock feel. Nonetheless, I love these guys. Really good music here.
This song breaks my heart, every time I hear it. It never gets old.
Me too
Good ol boys from east Texas, amazing live. But yes you have to check out “ballad of a southern man” “lonely east Texas nights” or “bury my bones”
Bury my bones best song ever in my opinion
Love them! Definitely need to react to Whiskey Myers-ballad of a southern man and also Bury My Bones
And Lonely East Texas Nights
I’m from Kentucky, but these boys are every bit as good as Tyler, Sturgill, or Chris Stapleton just different and I love their music
