  • I absolutely LOVE the Canon RF 28-70 f/2.0 lens... it almost NEVER leaves my Canon R6. BUT after using it for a few years, I've realized there are a few potential pitfalls you might encounter when using this lens, especially if you don't have a background in shooting with prime lenses. So in this video I'm breaking down 3 major issues you may encounter and giving some tips for how to avoid them.

    I 1000 percent agree with this review. I too have and love the beast. My trick to avoid the spray and pray is always shoot on the numbers. By that I mean, don't just sit behind the camera and spin the zoom ring, but before you shoot, intentionally choose either either 28,35,50, or 70 focal length. I too started with primes and the simple act of picking the exact focal lens is enough to throw me back into prime mode while still saving me the hassle and risk of a lense change. If I'm just out capturing moments with the family I may just run and gun, but for any meaningfull work, I always shoot on the numbers . Keep up the Epic work Katelyn and Bravo for the honest and balanced reveiws!!!!

      I wish this lens had a click at each of those focal lens so that you could tell what you were on without looking 🙃

      That's a great idea. Or even if the screen/viewfinder would change the color of the focal length when it reaches a certain one. But I typically know the length when I feel it in the view. But it would be a nice add on.@@EverythingCameFromNothing

      I am also very intentional with my focal length with this lens. I like 35, 50, and 70. I almost avoid the 28 for some odd reason unless I'm forced into it, lol

    I have an idea. Why dont you treat the zoom like a prime. When shooting 35mm, set zoom to 35mm. Same with 50, 70.And you have the ability to zoom in and out on top of treating it like a prime. Win win if you ask me. The main thing I am wondering is the photo quality verses the primes (bokeh) etc...

    I bought one already😢, and i love it😊. I was aware of those issues, and was thinking today about how i wish the lock button would lock the lens at 35, 50, and 70, instead of only at 28.

    Some really good points about primes vs zooms and creativity. My 70-200 was my favorite lens for a long time, and my 24-70 I didn't appreciate as much as I should.
    Since I bought and fell in love with my RF 85mm 1.2 my composition has gotten so much better and I'm noticing so many new things while moving around.

      I’m mostly a bird shooter with my 600mm prime. Very different subjects, but I also love doing senior portrait sessions from time to time.
      I agree every time I try to use a zoom like a 24-105, it’s nice but when I put that 85mm 1.2 on it’s just magical. For groups now, what lens do you usually go with? Can the 24-105 f4 be ok for that or would you want a larger aperture? Just wondering what other lens could compliment the 85mm if you had two lenses for portraits? Thanks!

    Great video. I unintentionally started using only prime lenses during my first few months of shooting (this year) and I’ve already noticed the benefits of constraint. I absolutely enjoy it. It’s like with everything in life: True freedom, in paradoxical way, requires limitations. Just ask any jazz musician. They don’t begin to learn how to improvise by just using all of the notes in the western music system. They systematically build up from root notes and chord tones and, then, scales and more complicated rhythms. This concept is so fascinating because it applies to all parts of life. Just listen to Fulton Sheen’s talk on freedom.

    Excellent commentary. I spent 15 years from 1982-1997 in the photography business. Although events were not my thing, you nailed the idea of creative brain activity when limited to fixed focal lengths and using your feet. I used 35mm film cameras and at my peak I had 18 fixed primes and just 2 zooms. With my medium format Hasselblad and large format Linhof, I was limited to primes of course. Back then primes were in fact sharper and faster but today they are just faster. Modern pro-grade zooms are razor sharp. That RF 28-70/2 is a masterpiece lens but keeping it in the bag during the formals of a wedding is a great idea for the reasons you stated in this video. Use it at the reception and for other as you said "journalistic shots." In those scenarios where people are moving about and often getting in your way, that ability to reframe quickly is indispensable.

    One of the most thoughtful videos I've seen on any aspect of the art of composition. The video is not really about the 28-70mm lens, it's about the impact of zooms vs primes on how we compose and how we think. Made me think about how my mind works when I compose my frames. (I recently bought my first zoom, the 24-105 f/4, after two decades of using only primes.)

    Very well explained! This is something I do: I start with the zoom lens set at (say) 50mm., and try to do as much as I can At that focal length. I try to only zoom in (or out) when strictly necesary. You get more creative when you are limited to a fixed focal lenght. That is true!

    THANK YOU KJ for doing this video!!! This is something I have been trying to put into words for other photographers on my team and this video sums it up perfectly! Now when I use my 28-70 for portraits, I put it at 35 or 50 depending on the look I want to get and I have my 85 on my other camera. : ) Love the flexibility of this lens for candid moments and love that I can still shoot it like a prime to keep those creative ideas flowing!     Good video. I shot the EF 24-70mm f.2.8 for years. Now I enjoy the RF 24-105 f.4. The extra reach of the f.4 is nice but the speed of f.2 is tempting.

    Your analysis of learning with Primes vs the versatility of Zooms is the BEST, most articulate, intelligent summary I've ever read. You explained that extremely well.
    I'm in a totally business now (real estate broker, doing only occasional still photographs and virtual reality for my listings), but my previous career was 21 years in corporate advertising on the photo studio side, and then 5 years before that doling location in architectural photography and photojournalism. I used Primes for decades, and only recently started using a Zoom for real estate (ultra wide, 14mm to 35mm).
    I agree with you: If I hadn't had that decades-long experience with Primes, I would likely not have the discipline and creativity to be able to handle Zooms when I finally adopted them into my workflow.
    Again, very well done, clearly articulated and excellent video. Subscribed.

    From my POV this lens replaces a 28, a 50 and a 70mm prime with the need to move around at those fixed focal length, I don't consider it as a zoom lens per se like my 70-200 F2.8 where I would remain static and try to get the best framing with the zoom. However I struggle a lot with the 28-70 outdoor when it's very bright and I purposedly want to remain wide open at F2. I tried a variable filter but then again it messes with the color and fidling with the stops is quite a thing.

    Good video: I do have one question about your video. A lot of your pictures appear over exposed when you show them. Was this caused by the compression of TH-cam when they were uploaded? Or is that your style that you have chosed? Even your videos all seem on the lighter side. Thanks in advanced.

    where I learned the beauty of this lens (and there's no equivalent lens on any other platform) was on a recent trip. I'm also a prime lover. So on my previous trips, I brought my 16, 24, 35, and 85. So I was CONSTANTLY having to change lenses. Because I had to pack light for the trip, I didn't have room for my traditional camera bag. I had my briefcase bag and a carry-on and that's it. Switching for the crowded, fast situations I was in was a big pain. I ended up leaving uncapped lenses in my bag to speed up switching lenses. but with the 28-70, I was bold and I left all the other lenses (except for the 35) at home. I kept the 35 because I wanted a light do-it-all lens. My bag was light and I didn't have the pressure of switching lenses. It also made traveling easier, especially passing through airport security. And the 28-70 is one of the most beautiful lenses ever. There is no lens like it. It looks like a prime but gives you so much flexibility. Now, if I was shooting locally, I would probably still stick to my primes (like the 85 1.2 is next level) but on a trip, having a lens that just stays on and produce the premium quality of this lens is just amazing.

    Wow. I now understand why I've been happy with the 28-70 BUT i feel like there's just something missing with all my shots. I've not been too long in the wedding photography field, and during those times I've been using the prime lens setup that you also have championed before (35-85-135) and there was this unexplainable thing that, in my eyes, made me fall in love with photography. I made the leap to the 28-70 late last year and, though i still had some epic shots, it felt like my photos we going the way of being run-of-the-mill. They were still lovely and my clients have been happy with them, but i personally felt they were lacking a "thing." With your video, i completely agree that primes and moving around with it made me brain think a bit more outside the box and see thing I wouldn't have if i was rooted in one spot.. and I feel like i also lost a bit of confidence talking to people because i could just stand further away and shoot. I love the 28-70 but I think i'm going to move back to my prime setup after this weekend's job (a last hurrah for this amazing lens - not gonna miss the backache after though. Haha) and stick with that moving forward. Thank you again for your amazing insight and more power to you and your channel!

      If you put the pictures next to one another you will be shocked how big the difference is. It is not in your head, it is real. 70mm F2 with a sharp lens vs 85mm F1.2 with a crazy razor sharp lens. You will notice for sure.

    I bought this lens after you first talked about it when you got it and I've never looked back. I love this lens and by far it is the best lens ever made. 95% of the time I shoot it at wide open @ f2

    Honestly this reminds me of your teaching on presets. You advocate for learning Lightroom really well first before jumping into presets. Likewise, it sounds like starting with primes is going to be better creatively long-term before getting a zoom lens.

    Terrific subject. In the wedding business, is it more important to deliver an expected style (primes) or a serendipitous style (lux zoom)? The strength/pitfall of primes can be delivering cookie cutter results. I think you could shoot with a Polaroid and get killer photographs. 🙂

    I got a 28-70 recently and took it it out to do a shoot about 2 weeks ago for the first time. I knew it was big but I think I underestimated how heavy that beast is because I was legit tired and breathing faster after holding it up without a tripod after a few minutes. I know that I have not been going to the gym the last couple of months like I should but I'm not *that* out of shape! If I'd put a speedlight on it I would've had to sit down and rest for a little while.

    I think that the zoom would be great for the detail shots while the primes should be great for the portraits.

    This is a great video. You can incorporate your old technique with the zooms. Instead of 50 or 85 you could set 50 or 70 and move your feet. I like the 28-70 because a lot of the Ceremony in the church had restrictions of where I could stand. This favors the zooms. 28-70 on one body 70-700 on the other. I love the primes but the actual space determines what I use.

    I shoot primes (35, 50, 85, 100, 135) but I want 1 lens to shoot indoors to capture my family / kids to document our everyday life. I know you said in the past that you love to have a camera on hand in the home with the 24-70 for this exact scenario. Would you suggest the 28-70 over the 24-70 instead? Thank you! 🙂

    Big fan of your videos! I’ve been thinking of selling my RF 50mm 1.2 and replace it with the 28-70 F2.0 so that I have more of a variety of focal lengths. I’ve been shooting with my 50mm only for the last 3 years. I was wondering what you might think?

      I think, you will miss your 50 1.2 anyway. It has a special look and it`s my low-light-beast. Would never give it away.

    Still love mine. I just carried it through Japan and S Korea on Holiday. Great video! I'm not pro, so, I don't have to concern myself with style consistency. I can agree about the composition part. (But when subject/scenario is moving fast, I'll take the zoom. I'd rather get the shot than not get it at all)

    For me it's all about about efficiency and speed as well as being light on your feet.. Constantly changing lenses is cumbersome and tiring, especially when you forget your bag on the other side of the room and you need to change quickly. Thats where the 28 - 7- f2 absolutely shines and all other caveats fade into oblivion.

    I see the zoom as a collection of prime focal lengths - I set it to 28mm and then move to acquire my composition - or I set it to 35mm and then move to acquire my composition - or I set it to 50mm and then move to acquire my composition. That way I keep the versatility of the zoom but also the visual signature of the prime focal lengths AND the greater creativity afforded to me through their limitations. Unless I am physically unable to move (say at a strict church ceremony) I rarely shoot zooms at random focal lengths

    such a great video with details. i am even more confused now. I don't shoot weddings but just shoot candid of my kids. I'm trying to decide to upgrade my 50mm 1.8 rf to the 1.2 but then now thinking of the 28-70/2.0 also, just all confused now, first world problems :)

      5 months later re watching this video, i'm going to pull the trigger in a few months on my birthday. It's going to be for my kids candid photos around the house and maybe, if i can bring it for travel and vacation photos also :) but the 24-105/2.8 is tempting :)

    I shoot Street photography with the rf 24-70 2.8 and honestly i cant tell the difference in sharpeness, color, or contrast over a prime. I no longer shoot primes. I sold them all for the 15-35 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and 100-500 7.1

    UV filter or not , if so what is the best for the 28-70???

      Just google it. This must be in the top 50 most covered topics in photography. TLDR: just use a lens hood for protection. Don't cheap out if you do use a filter to reduce impact on image quality. A small set of lenses require a filter to complete their weather sealing; consult the manual for more info (RF 28-70 does not).

    Well I am a Sony shooter/ Nikon And as I kept watching your channel I started lusting after this lens, But I already commented to these 2 platforms, I finally jumped and bought a r62 so I could have my very own copy of these amazing lens,
    It’s my first Canon it has a bit of learning curve, now I have all 3 with a unhappy wife lol

    Excellent video. Just a thought about activating your brain by moving - it's been shown that people driving stick-shift cars have fewer accidents than those driving automatics. Maybe they're more focused on their driving.

    After shooting with my dream lens….cannon 85mm 1.2 it’s sooooo hard to pull the trigger on the 28-70…. however I’m pushing 60 and my knees are not what they used to be. The 28-70 would definitely be easier on me not having to bend as much.

    Movement is key, you're onto something there. The "Zooms make you lazy" is an overstated myth from my perspective, often used by gear junkies who are justifying the purchase of as many primes as they can afford after starting as a zoom shooter for affordability reasons. I started on primes and then moved to primarily zooms so that I could be more creative not less. Let me explain. I've never understood the idea of standing in one place and "just zooming" becuase I've always seen the zoom as a compositional tool allowing me to move back and zoom in or move forward and zoom out to intentionally change the relationship of my foreground to background. Or, when pinched in a tight space behind a bed or crowd I can zoom with my lens to still grab closer shots vs. being limited to the 24mm on my body or whatever. Zooms let you travel lighter and be more versatile, period. Of course always carry a few primes for special use cases, extra dark days or spaces, extra bokeh for extra magical portraits, etc. I have a 35, 50, 85, 100 macro, and 135 prime personally but the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8L glass are on me 80% of the day.

    As a 15 years practitioner and huge prime lens fan (14 f/2.8, 35 f/1.4, 85 f/1.2, 100 f/2.8, 135, f/2.0) - I can say it is quite easy choice. It's start from basics: if you can move with your legs and you don't have rush dynamic environment - primes are clearly your choice. When you shoot something you cannot approach but two cameras with two lenses does not kill your back and does not block your movements - still primes. If it's dynamic events when you are not able to change lens and even switch cameras because you're loosing shots - that's it. Zooms :) So, 28-70 f/2.0 quite a savior. Though after 6 months of shooting It makes me think about lighter alternatives - either 24-70 f/2.8 and even 24-105 f/4.0 or... investing more time into gym (and I'm f/1.0 serious about it - 28-70 is heavy as a hell, 4-6 hours of shooting is exhausting)

    Happy owner of the 28-70 here. You’ve hit the nail on the head with your points: the 28-70 is a wonderful tool but the flexibility it provides, can cause you to lose the “intentionality” that you would have if you are used to shooting with primes. “Rich hobbyists” can chase how to make good photographs forever by buying gear and expensive zooms all the time, never attaining the skill and creativity of someone with a fixed lens point-and-shoot.
    I’ve started off with an EF-S 18-55 and 450D I’ve made some of my best photos with that little lens. My “style”, preferences, my way to tell a story was derived from using that lens. This is why I love my 28-70 and R5 combo. It’s like the Thanos version of my first camera. Bigger, heavier, but with a snap of my fingers, I can do everything I want ❤

    You definitely need to think about perspective, ask do I want more context around my subject, and the distortion of being close is acceptable, then use the wider end of your zoom, if you want less context and less distortion, use the longer end.
    If a newb snags the 28-70 as the one lens to rule them all, they could take forever to get a feel for this.

    I’ve had that lens for 3 years..and.. I sold it 😅 I figured my 15-35 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 makes things easier. The 28-70 is just a chore to use and I also found myself around the 70mm range for photoshoots. Just my thoughts 😊

      I have the same setup as you. If you’re not crazy about the bokeh, I don’t think any sane person is going to notice how a 28-70 at f/2.0 looks versus something like a 24-70 at f/2.8. I’ve come to the conclusion that any noticeable “pop” or “delicious bokeh” that exists wont be noticed by people who aren’t pixel peeping, and even less so by your clients that know nothing about cameras and lenses.

      @@xkben90 Forget bokeh at time of image capture. You can create the "bokeh" of a 200mm or 1000mm lens in Photoshop and you can play with it all night long, and then rework it dozens of times over the next week if you are truly a bokeh fanatic.

    I haven't shot with RF lenses. I'm still in the EF-ish thing. But I have shot with the EF 24-70 and the EF 25-105 F4. And a lot of EF primes. I have some EF primes. BUT, even the Sigma 24-105mm F4 ART is much shaper than anything I have used from used from Canon. Maybe exept from the 85 1,8 and the 100mm 2,8 macro. :)

    OMG! Mind blown 🤯 by the speed, accuracy & sharpness of the rf 28-70. Got one to test out as I was ready to upgrade the ef 24-70 with an rf lens and immediately I had to test it out on our spunky 8mth old dalmation to really test the speed & accuracy of the eye out before heading up to the lake to take portraits of a couple spunky 3 yr old girls. And right out of the gate I know that if I can get over the weight, I am going to love this lens. And then adding in the benefit of changing up focal lengths without changing lenses & while also still moving my feet to replicate the creamy backgrounds of my 50mm prime, oh yeah baby! This lens truly rocks my socks off! But I’m with KJ, my ef 85mm is going nowhere anytime soon. 😉

    Maybe slightly off topic but I too have the 28-70 f2 on a R5. I seem to get condensation issues (lens fogging) at times particularly when there are temperature fluctuations - going into hot rooms from outdoors or shooting outdoors in the open sun. RF 70-200 f2.8 and 14-35 f4 also (but less so). Don't know if this is an R5 (new lens mount) thing or not. BUT the 28-70 is by far the worst for this. Is it just me?

      I think its because of the bigger glass. I use to photograph weddings over the winter months on the islands and had this issue so many times. Drove me nuts. I started to leave the room after using a hair dryer to warm up the glass and hit the inside of the camera bag That helped big time. I'd also use my heat vent from my car. Its the cold air-conditioned rooms that causes these problems . Trying to wait and wipe out the moisture was such a waste of time. Hope that helps

    I do think newbies should use primes first. Zooms on the most part are average lens and don't have a constant apeture through the zoom range. This particular 28-70 2.0 lens is a red ring and expensive. What I see is people zoom in cos they are close and distort peoples body parts, making the photo not complimenting the subject. To me the 50 and 85mm 1.2 are unbeatable for portraits and train you to walk and you are more particularly to the look you want when changing lenses

    If your intention is to flatter the appearance of the bride, I would add that the subject-lens distance is critical in your ability to do so. Shooting the bride at 4-1/2' to 6' will take off pounds. Shooting the bride at longer distances, especially beyond 8' will add pounds. Therefore, if the bride is normal weight or a bit heavy set, opt to shoot her a bit closer. If the bride happens to be a 5'-10" supermodel and weighs 110 pounds, then by all means feel free to make her a bit more healthy looking by using a shooting distance of 8' to 10' feet. If the bride has a critical eye, and she is a typical normal weight bride, she may sense that she appears heavier in photos if the photographer is using longer focal length lenses (85mm to 135mm) and correspondingly longer subject-lens distances. And in this regard, one of the most convenient aspects of the 28-70 zoom lens is that it allows the photographer to pinpoint the most flattering subject-lens distance FIRST (based on the bride's face shape and proportions) and to then select the exact focal length (magnification factor) to frame the shot, whether it be 33mm, 47mm, 61mm, etc. When I shoot weddings, there are always at least three photographers. One of these photographer's sole purpose is to capture the bride all day at the most flattering subject-camera distance, which is selected specifically for her particular face shape, a shape which has been analyzed and evaluated prior to the wedding day. That's how important the subject-camera distance is.
