      Manny Ortiz i made the mistake and ignored your advise about how heavy and large this lens is.. and bought the lens!!! Damn it is so heavy! I returned the next day and lost $150 restock fee but better than losing more when i resell. I got the 85 1.2 instead and i love it. But learned my lesson to listen to Manny next time lol

    This lens is incredible. I used to shoot a 24-105mm f4 and it was pushing ISO 6400 during theatre shoots. I can now shoot at ISO 800-1600 and the photos come out so clean. No more need to change lenses and risking missing shots.

    I’m wedding photographer and I purchased this monster and I’m more than happy. In my country wedding ceremony takes usually around 5-10 minutes, so you don t have so much time to switch the lenses, but you’ll still get the quality and DOF of primes. I have two bodies on the straps - one with 28-70/2 and second with 135/2 (or 85/1.2 - depends on location). Yes, it is little bit heavy and because of that I detached grip from the body. I’m also not using flash, because I love the atmosphere on the pictures - than extra stop of light (F2 vs F2.8) is handy :)
    Thank you for review - great pictures as always :)

    As a photojournalist, I always have two 5DmIV bodies with vertical grips, L glass, and occasionally 1 or 2 Speedlites on me. A 3 pound lens (basically the same weight as the EF 70-200mm 2.8 IS III) is completely within reason. IMA, the benefits outweigh any discomfort the actual weight might cause.

    Don’t some people shoot with the 70-200 for hours at weddings? It’s the same weight.

    • @sam_pnw
      @sam_pnw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes but 70-200 does have IS for the slower moments during the wedding

    • @kevindiaz3459
      @kevindiaz3459 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@sam_pnw Not sure what the point of what you are saying is. IS would be helpful on a 70-200mm at a wedding, but is mostly unnecessary for a standard zoom lens. You won't likely shoot any slower than 1/160 sec, more than fast enough to avoid the need for IS on a standard zoom.

      @youknowwho9247 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On travels I walk around literally all day with my gripped D850 and 24-70 f/2.8 in my hand - that's heavier than this f/2 zoom on an R5/6. Don't think the weight issue is a big real world concern for many people, and if we weigh that against the convenience of not bringing a bag of primes to a wedding - well, this lens is a winner. An expensive one, sadly. Which Tamron or Sigma made it for E mount. :D

      Sitting in the same boat currently ^^ been struggling with getting the RF 50 but the 28-70 is so good, there is no justification for me to „limit“ myself with a prime when this zoom does it all. And that’s from someone who always used and loved primes.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty remarkable what Canon did with the RF glass. This lens, by all accounts I've seen, essentially replaces the bag of primes we are all used to bringing to weddings and the 70-200 saves the weight this one adds. Not to mention the bodies are lighter than DSLRs, so all in all one gets the f/2 aperture on a zoom at nearly the same total weight as before with an f/2.8 zoom.

  • @Kenneth_R

    Thanks for this review. This lens is a godsend for me. I mostly shoot in motion picture sets which have been getting dimmer and dimmer over the years and now with the widespread use of the Sony VENICE with its native iso 2500 they are even more so. With f2.8 lenses I am constantly having to shoot at iso 6400 to get reasonable shutter speeds of around 1/125s at times (which is about my lowest limit for photographing actors). Prime lenses have been a solution but given that a lot of times I just cant move much from my position zoom lenses are MUCH more preferable. With this lens I am able to retire my f1.4 and f1.2 primes. Thanks again for making quality content!

    I did a wedding with this lens. Its huge. The upsides were obvious. The downsides were that when you do portrait work with it, it's so big that subjects are intimated, and it's great to change focal lengths but it's so big to use that you can't do that quickly, it's not a run-and-gun lens.

  • @imthemaximus

    I guess it's because you use lighter cameras like the A7iii
    but the usual canon wedding setup which is the 5DIV is 890g+ 24-70 2.8 is 805g = 1695g
    and if i switch to EOS R.
    EOS R is 660g + RF 28-70 is 1430g =2090g
    so like im getting 1 stop higher than before for increased weight by 395g is ok according to me, because for one particular downside in return i don't have to carry three different prime lenses as well as it will allow you to shoot without stopping in the shoot, which is more important in a wedding. No offence but honestly it's more about taking the picture and taking a good picture and not about the comfort of the photographer.

    what do a 35, 50, and 85mm lens weigh combined? I am guessing that it is more than the 28-70. Unless someone is leaving them in a bag somewhere then I guess that might make sense. My concern is that I might miss the extra 4mm at the wide end compared to a 24-70. The other thing I would love to see compared is images shot at 50mm comparing 1.2 to F2. Great video as always.

    Bruh! I shot weddings back in the late 1970's using a Hasselblad, 80mm f/2.8, a speedlight & an external speedlight battery all mounted on a Jones Bracket (look them up). I would strap the battery on the bottom of the bracket so I could set the entire rig down at times, but I'd bet it weighed in at 5-6 pounds. That's a whole lot better than what I started with which was a Rapid Omega with a modified studio strobe head powered by what was basically a small car battery carried with a shoulder strap. I ruined several suits using that rig! I'd shoot weddings with that 28-70mm f/2 lens any day of the week!

    • @bfs5113
      @bfs5113 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too, and I had a Hasselblad 500 C/M around that period. Although my main rig was a Nikon F2A + Motor Drive + Battery Pack with a 6-8 lbs Braun F900 Flash with power pack. Fast forward a bit, my Nikon D3 back in 2008 with lens trinity probably already over the size and weight limits for most. Since fast primes are trendy nowadays, I think the ~6 lbs 200 f/2 prime will gain popularity. 😊

    Dude! I really enjoyed your review! Hella inspiring me to make more videos. Also, the size of that lens was what i noticed first too! Looked big and man, I really wished Nikon made a lens similar to this! Looks like a hella nice lens that would replace 2 of my primes as well!

      I used the Sony A7iii + Tamron 28mm - 70mm with a polarizer to film this. Just a little color grading since it was hella bright. Cheers!

    I'm a prime lens man, myself. Tried the sony 24-70mm 2.8 GM recently because I shoot a lot of live music events, which means darkness. I was not impressed at all with the images a 2.8 aperture creates. Not enough background separation for me, and the ISO was high as hell. I'm with you, Manny. Primes4life, bro. lol

      There is a world of difference between this lens and that 2.8 lens. The only knock against this lens is its weight and size. Its image quality is next level. The images look like they came from a prime.

    In the same time this weights as 2 primes, so if you shoot a festival for example and you want versatility, but also low light performance, this lens is the best.
