    Thank you so much!! I'm new to the craft and and yesterday I was searching for a much larger punch needle and wondering how on Earth I could tell online what size I should be looking for. And just like magic, your video appeared in my suggestions today even though I didn't google the question!! I'm so happy to know what to be looking for now! I just adore this craft!!
    Thank you again!

    Thanks for the history lesson. I just learned about this today. And I know it has a long history, but gee, it seems like such a fun hobby. I wish my JHS teacher would've taught us how to do punch needling when she taught us how to use a latch hook and the afghan stitch back in the early 1980s.

  • @karengore8323
    @karengore8323 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Amy, I've been looking for these needles for over 10 years but I did not know what to call them on the internet search so they kept giving me only hook & loop. In 1970 my sister took a high school home ec. class & rug punching was on the curriculum that year. She bought a hoola-hoop for $2 & skans of typical rug yarn & a needle I still have not found. Flower power art was the thing of the day & that was the pattern she drew. It was so beautiful when completed & I never forgot it but when I wanted to redo it in the new millenium, the needle was nowhere to be found. It made a loop 1 or 2 sizes in height more than the Craftsmen size #??? that you showed is adjustable but is still not quite long enough for me.
    It looked like an oyster shelling knife handle with a hole at the tip & one at the handle drilled into the metal & I still don't know what to call it. It makes a pile more like a long hair shag carpet with extra long pile. What I want it for is to make a huge Polar Bear wall hanging without all the time it takes to pull hook & loop. She made her rugs in one day (large hoola-hoop size) Have you ever seen a double hole needle? They could have been locally modified in a machine shop for a class of only 12 girls. When flower-power went out, the needle may have gone out with it because it may been modified, I don't lnow. The Craftsman is still not long enough for me but it may have to do. I Don't know how long polar bearfur is but I know It's not short cropped.

    • @TheOxfordCompany
      @TheOxfordCompany  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How fascinating! At first I thought you might be describing latch hook, which is a common technique they might have been teaching in the 70s but I've never heard of or seen anything like what you describe. I don't know of a tool that allows you to make a large rug like that in a day. The longest setting on the Craftsman's needle is the #1 which is 3/4 of an inch long. You could reach under and pull the loops to make each one longer, but I think that might be more of a time consuming technique than you are looking for. If you do track down this tool, please let me know - I'm very curious! I'm so sorry not to be of more help! Amy

    • @karengore8323
      @karengore8323 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amy, hi Karen Gore here. Sorry I wasn't more clear. The rugs my sister made were burlap type material (tighter than burlap) stapled to hoola-- hoops about 3 or 4 feet around & those were able to be done in a day or 2. I am looking to make a faux Polar bear fur to place in a country cabin on a cypress wood wall.. I have a large deer there now & it doesn't stand out well at all. I need something lighter & I love polar bears even though I Iive in the south. I haven't found my needle yet as I remember it but it may have been what you're showing but it doesn't strike me that way. Thank you for your reply. Your work is beautiful.

    i loved the video ,it was verry informative but i have a question . how does the yarn stay at place on the fabric? do you use any kind of glue on the back ?

    • @TheOxfordCompany
      @TheOxfordCompany  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thanks for asking! You don't need any kind of glue on the back. The loops are close enough together that when the piece is finished, they hold each other in place! Amy

    I love all of your products. The only problem I have is the price tag. Can you recommend a cheaper option for someone just getting started? I can make the frame but I can't swing buying 2 needles from you, the cloth and the grippers for something I may not even like doing.

    • @TheOxfordCompany
      @TheOxfordCompany  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so glad you like what we offer and I appreciate you taking the time to watch our videos! To start, you would only need one punch needle and a small piece of monk's cloth. You could try punching with an embroidery hoop to see if it is a craft you might enjoy long term. If you decide you do enjoy it, you could then invest in the grippers for making your own frame. Best, Amy

    Hi Amy. I am currently working on a rug using the craftsman punch needle. I ordered one of your punch needles and I love it so much better than the Craftsman! Currently, I have the Craftsman set to "9". Would a size 9 regular Oxford punch be the same to finish my project?

    • @TheOxfordCompany
      @TheOxfordCompany  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad you're loving our punch needle! Yes, the #9 on both tools makes a 3/8" tall loop, so you should be able to finish your piece without a noticeable difference. Happy punching! Amy

    Hi Amy, would you happen to know how to fix a loose lock on an old craftsman's punch needle?

    • @TheOxfordCompany
      @TheOxfordCompany  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I've fixed many! I carefully slide out the lock, making sure not to bend off the threading eye. Once the lock is out I insert a Phillips head screw driver into it to expand it. I try to expand it enough to be a snug fit when you put it back in the channel. Hope this makes sense!

    Can you use lace weight yarn in the mini?

    • @TheOxfordCompany
      @TheOxfordCompany  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My apologies for this late reply! Lace weight yarn would be too fine for the mini - the mini and our other fine point needles are meant for worsted weight or similar yarn. You may be able to use multiple strands of lace weight yarn but you may be happier with the results of punching with a heavier weight yarn. Thanks for asking! Amy

    What kind of fabrics can be used? Can it be used on material made for hand embroidery?

    • @TheOxfordCompany
      @TheOxfordCompany  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I use and recommend monk's cloth (the variety with 12-14 holes per inch) but you can also use rug linen, or even wool flannel with the fine punch needle. I'm not sure about material made for hand embroidery. I suspect it might not be strong enough to hold up to the punch needle. I hope this helps! Amy
