4.2 The Heresies - Judaizers and Ebionites: Denying Christ’s Divinity | Way of the Fathers

  • Is Jesus Christ God? Is he a man? Is he both? Spoiler alert: the mainstream Church answered with the both/and, but the factions on the fringes tended to choose one or the other. For our first heresy, we take a look at the Ebionites, and their New Testament-era predecessors, the so-called Judaizers. These concluded that Jesus Christ was a mere human. A human who became a prophet perhaps, but just a human.

    I remember reading a review by Anne Barbeau Gardiner of a French book on the origins of Islam where it traces the movement all the way back to the Ebionites. Its interesting that that next episode will explore Docetism which also found its way into Islam

    I hate to say that I know some modern day Ebionites, as I was listening it sounded like you were describing this group I’ve encountered. Law keepers, human only Jesus, say that main stream Christianity departed from the true faith, pro Talmud and sages are over Jesus.

    Another possible target of the author of the letter to the Hebrews when he asserts Jesus is greater than all the angels is Metatron (Enoch) from the apocryphal "Enoch." It seems some Jewish sages in late-Second-Temple Judaism, in response to Jesus in Christianity, developed the idea that Enoch, after his assumption to heaven, was made a quasi- or semi-divine being. I wonder if any church fathers addressed the ancient Israelite claims about Metatron (Enoch) as the word or son of God?

    • @TheOriginalChurch
      @TheOriginalChurch 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Roberto! Not to my knowledge - the Church fathers didn't consider Enoch to be Scripture, so they didn't feel the need to interpret it or respond to it.

    • @robertopacheco2997
      @robertopacheco2997 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, Jim. The original preacher of Hebrews, however, would've most certainly known how his contemporaries among the Jewish sages were elevating Metatron/Enoch to a son or word of God. I read a very good book by a respected Jewish scholar documenting all the Jewish writings of the period glorifying Metatron/Enoch. Moreover, the author clearly made the point that the sages were trying to posit Metatron/Enoch as an alternative to Jesus, something he also documented using primary sources. I think it's quite possible that the author of the sermon to the Hebrews knew about this movement among his contemporaries in the synagogues and addressed it obliquely in his sermon aimed at a newly converted Hebrew audience. @@TheOriginalChurch

      @@robertopacheco2997 I should nuance that a bit - a few Church fathers did consider Enoch to be inspired, but it was not the consensus - I don't know of any who address this issue specifically, though.

    In Paul’s view of the Christ, “If one can be made righteous in the sight of God by following the law, the Christ died in vain on the cross” Galatians 5:2.
    But Luke 1:6 clearly states that “Zechariah and Elizebeth were righteous in the sight of God for following all the laws and commandments blamelessly.”
    Luke and other testimonies demonstrate that the “heresies” are deeply rooted in the textual tradition of Christianity.

    I think if the Judaizers were preaching that Christ wasn’t God, then Paul would have mentioned it somewhere in his letters. He would’ve written a defense for Christ’s divinity like he wrote a defense for not following the letter of the Law and not getting physically circumcised.

    @2:36 to 2:51 the narrator says that the men who Paul was warning about were said to have been sent by James but that is not really true. That is a contradiction of what is written in Galatians 2:11-12. The Apostle Paul, according to Luke, said that they had been sent by James. And in regard to preaching different gospels, James establishes a different Gospel for the Jews in Acts 15. And his gospel to the Gentiles he recommends they should go to synagogue and hear Moses preached on the Sabbath. James was all about being Jewish and had very little regard for Gentile believers. The truth is sometimes hard to accept. But there it is.God bless.
