Working on the 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air part 4, fitting and painting the outer rear valance panels

- I ended up getting a right side replacement outer rear valance panel. My friend Dave stopped by with a NOS one he had for his 59 Impala Sport Sedan. He sold the Impala, but still had the valance for it.... so he gave it to me, after seeing my video on restoring the center valance. Seeing I had the the right panel, I figured I might as well get the left panel too! It's a repo, that needed a small amount of tweaking, but it fits and looks nice.
I'll post another video of them installed, maybe even installing them. This video was getting long, so I ended it where I did.... Plus I want the paint to dry a few days before installing them.

Your patience and craftsmanship really shows in the final product Howard. I've noticed a lot of times that things I have bought aren't up to my expectations nowadays. I end up touching things up a bit as my late Dad would have said. If you eventually get around to doing the dual exhaust correctly then the lower back end of your Bel Air will be looking just fine.
👍Yep, the old Chevy needs some love. Good job H! 👍🇺🇸
That 59 gets a little sweeter every year. Your meticulous maintenance over the years is showing up loud and clear. Nice work.
This is the first paint work I have done on the Bel Air in 41 years....... I don't do much to the Bel Air, as I often put it in storage during the winters, to free up the garage for other projects.
Great video. I enjoy seeing you work on the Belair. I'm going to look at mine to see if the valances are the same, which they should be. I'm certainly going to be aware of where the passenger side tail pipe will be placed when I change to dual exhaust
Kudos for your innovation on those fiberglass DIY corners. Impressive
They held up surprisingly well.
Howard, your homemade fibreglass valance panels look better than O.E!👍
They defiantly held up well. To bad I didn't paint them with enamel back in the day.....
Howard Nice work. I love gloss black paint even though I never owned a black car.
The problem with black is it shows everything.
Nice job as usual! That paint shaker is a nice tool to have.
I love the paint shaker. It took me many years to find one at a reasonable price. I use it all the time.
@@OldCarAlley I'm on the lookout for one too!
@@t-rodzgarage I have seen three in estate sales..... This is the first one that was not sold by the time I got to the sales.... I waited in line to get into the sale. This was also the first affordable one I found. I did go to a sale a few months ago, with a paint shaker, BUT they wanted $800 for it. They often sell between that $800 and $1200 range, and sell quick. I forget what I paid for mine, but it was under fifty dollars...... I'm thinking $25.....
POR 15 is not all it’s supposed to be. Rustoleum is a better product.
Great attention to details. It is the little things that separate the great cars from the rest of the pack. Nice work.
Those details are usually rusted and gone long ago! Stinking rust belt ! One reason Ohio - Michigan sucks ! Good looking Chevy ! Wish i still had my first car! 65 1/2 ford LTD! That car was a real beauty- 390 4 bbl 2 speed Fmx with factory fender skirts side pipes and reverb radio! 😎✌️😝🫡🇺🇸
Glad to see you are doing more fab and paint work in cars lately. Are you ever going to do another complete restore ?
You're the best restorer on youtube that I have found... very meticulous well rounded and great at explaining. I enjoy the content thanks
Maybe in the future, but for now I want to get the Bel Air back into cruiser shape.
@@chrissheumaker7876 Glad you enjoy my videos. I just try to repair things, so I don't have to do them over and over again.
Howard, when you had the Galaxie did you check the speedometer for accuracy? I don’t even know if they can be adjusted. My Galaxie is off about 7mph at 65mph. If I can adjust it let me know how. Thanks. BelAir looks great as it is but you’re making it look even better
I did.... using my phone. It was spot on. Maybe you have incorrect tire size and/or the wrong speedo gear in the transmission. The speedo can be adjusted, but can be easily damaged if you're not ultra careful. My bet is incorrect tire size.... that causes them to read higher with smaller tires or read lower with larger tires. One tire size difference can cause that kind of discrepancy.
Does that brush-on Rustoleum leave brush marks? I'm looking to paint the backside of my wheels, but don't want to use a spray paint. I've also been disappointed by POR-15. Yeah, it's very hard to scratch, but it peels easily and is sunlight-sensitive.
Yeah, I often brush on the floor pans and what not. You will get a little brush marking, but I only brush where it's not that visible.
@@OldCarAlley Thank you sir. I'm pretty much in the same boat you're in. My '58 Impala is a primarily unrestored car with original paint. Looking to undo the stupid stuff the previous owner did. I again thank you for the power steering installation inspiration. I think I gave you a mention in that video here on TH-cam.
