45 years ago my uncle was teaching me to play guitar. started with the chords D and A. I got sick of playin D,and A over and over and over,. John took the guitar off me and said, now listen to what ya can do with two chords, and he sang Down in the Valley. I never got sick of practising again. Thank you sir the mempries come flooding back.
my grandma sang this song to me every day even when she had cancer when she was in the hospital she would still sing it to me its the last song she sang to me before she died.
Im a country girl so i love these old country folk songs and my mom also used to sing this to me when i was a kid now im 19 and a senior in high school wow where does time go
I have sang this song to my kids since they were born, thank you so much for posting this i didnt even remember all the words from when i was little and now i do :) its beautiful.
I'm so glad to have found your site. All of your songs are great. I'm writing a book of my life's expierences for my grandchildren and I will include your playing of these songs. Thanks so much for doing such a good job.
+mamanookies Good for you. My dad used to sing and play his mountain dulcimer (and read) to us at bedtime. He wasn't a perfect dad, but that was the best thing he ever did for us. If I ever have kids, I'll do the same. He gave me a love of good music, one of the most precious gifts you can give (although I might have developed it anyway, it still didn't hurt. And maybe I wouldn't have. Who knows?)
I play this in the key of F. The chords are F and C7. You will notice that I am playing with a capo on the third fret and using the chord formations of D and A7 simply because I wanted access to the the bass runs between D and A7.
I remember watching Stir Crazy when I was a kid and hearing this. Never realised how beautiful this song was until I got older and could appreciate it. Such a lovely song.
I HAVE THIS SONG ON AN OLD 45 FROM 1948 AND MY DAD SINGING ON ONE SIDE AND PASTY CLINE ON THE OTHER . DON"T THINK THAT IT STILL WORKS HE USED TO SING MANY OTHER COUNTRY SONGS , YOUR ONLY IN MY ARMS TO CRY ON MY SHOULDER, WILLIE NELSON DID IT ALSO , WALKING THE FLOOR OVER YOU ,ERNEST TUBB , I'LL NEVER LET YOU GO LITTLE DARLING , TEARDROPS IN MY HEART , IF YOU HAVE ANY WOULD LOVE TO GET THEM THERE ARE A FEW MORE BUT CAN'T FINE NOT ONE .
IT CAME TO ME TO NIGHT AND REMEMBERING HOW MOM SANG IT ALL THE TIME , IM GOING TO USE YOUR METHOD WITHOUT CAPO, STANDARD TUNING ON MY 12 STRING ACOUSTIC.THE 12 STRING COVERS UP MY POOR VOCALS. THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME A STARTING POINT
As usual it was outstanding! A great song sang the way it was meant to be sang. It's not at all an American song, but if you have not done it already, you should do Edelweiss.
I've been trying to sing this and couldn't remember all the verses. Ran by this in a search engine. Thank you , enjoyed it is much. Now I have to practice. :)
I really love this song :) I heard it from Stir Crazy. You make it sound really refreshing Thanks for this :) shivers down my spine. Thanks from United Kingdom
birmingham alabama to birmingham england....love it....i have a prison very near to my house....i should park outside and play this really loud.....lol.
@RANGERVETBRET there are only two chrods in this song.... in technical terms ...1 and 5 ...which means if its in E.....the chords are E and B ...if its in E# -sharp the chords are E# and B# : )
pleasant indeed. Your US Birmingham or our UK Brum? Hopefully ours although it was a shocking old place and you still don't want to hang about at visiting time! Perhaps this version should be played to ease hard hearts. Well done.
@RANGERVETBRET the key appears to be E but he might have the capo low on the third fret which would mean the key is E# (sharp) ...but i believe its E (natural)
