7:14 to 7:25 is my favorite part. To me, it's like standing on a gloomy, dimly moonlit beach, staring out into the dark ocean horizon. I wish this moment were just a bit longer. Such a fascinating piece from Debussy's final years!

A masterpiece from late in his life proved that Debussy's creative well was far from dry! Very fine performance. Bravo!

Saint-Saëns, in denouncing this piece, was just upset that he couldn't make something as interesting as this.

As much as I love Saint-Saëns, I 100% agree. He was way too reactionary against the new music of his time in his final years.

Most everything Saint-Saens has charm or some memorable element but this type of art snd creativity was beyond his faculties. I ve heard this music since my 20s snd have studied Messiaen,Boulez,Lutoslawsky since. Until certain concepts make themselves aware to you the pulsing ,the line that doesnt follow 3/4 or fit neatly into a measure or 4measires,the never seen before mixingx of harmonies snd so much else is invisible to eye and ear. In a sense Ravel is easier to understand on the page though often physically more difficult. And Mons.Saint-Saens didnt know about emptiness, fogginess, deathSkryabin or ugliness in music. Look how long it took Europeans to see black i s beautiful. Feck Americans are revolting against this concept but we have Attgens, sec of state and 4star generals CEOzd. Blacks are in every commercial now. Things ixz changing Fast. Latinos outnumber whites in secret internet areas... And yes thelast5 Pulitzer Prizes. Judt u wait till my violin concerti anf Symphonies rise out dee toilets!

@@christianvennemann90081st pf and 4th concerto really should be pl a yed more. Cellists got da best. Violinists got small piece and those 3 violin concerti just deservedly languish.

This is more colorful and full of life and feeling than anything saint saens ever made. Everytime I listen to his music on the other hand I just feel like I'm being condescended to

I certainly don't see how this complex piece can be played as precisely and clearly as Valentina and Alexei perform it here. In places it goes beyond music to intoxication.

I used to have a 78 of this that was slower and lower, I know not shit about music BUT it was really cool sounding. Two people taking turns playing, i believe. Way cool. Wish i knew who it was. This is good to hear but it was worlds different .

Almost - they play at the same time. It could have been performed by Jacqueline Bonneau and Genevieve Joy - there's a recording of it from 1955, so it may be that. Also on the record was Dolly Suite by Faure. There was also a recording from '64 by Robert and Gaby Casadesus, and another from '57 by Germaine Thyssens-Valentin and Jeanne Manchon-Theis.

@@kylereese8727 No. Thanx. I should clarify. I'm not saying it's bad. I'm just saying that it does sound to me like Debussy is having a really hard time. The piece tho is brilliantly creative.

Never heard of a piece in C-major that is as gloomy and horrid as the first movement.

I thinks it’s utterly captivating. I honestly can’t think of appropriate adjectives for it, which is one of the reasons for my fascination, but gloomy and horrid certainly wouldn’t be among them.
