Bobby was one of the best in the Northeast of England.
I remember meeting him in the 70s in the Unionist club in South Shields,
He was a good friend of my father, the late & great BILLY BROWN, who was also
A workman’s club comedian, unfortunately he passed away in a club in
Chester lê Street, while getting ready to do a show, in 1959 at the very young age
    Of 47 ,
Oh how I would love to see these two guys again, they were the best the Northeast
    Of England ever had .
Did anyone out there remember BILLY BROWN ??????
Would love to hear from you ,

Played on the same bill as Bobby.
Shared a dressing room at Stanly.
He kept us all laughing with jokes he couldn’t tell on stage.
    Such a gent.

I was born in Lincluden house Penshaw, grew up there and indeed did slide down from Penshaw monument as a kid
Lincluden house was about two hundred yards up from the main road and the Pub on the corner
We had chickens, and our neighbours family were minors, we put eggs on the wall and they put a bucket of coal there
    This was 1947

I’ve watched and listened to Bobby’s recordings and re-told his gags to others for years, and yet I’ve never seen this particular clip before, so thank you so much for posting. I recall years ago my grandad once played dominos with Bobby for a 10-bob note, which my grandad won and got Bobby to autograph, alas I don’t know what became of it… but knowing of my grandad he’d probably spent it at some point! I would have loved it to have been kept in the family, as Bobby was obviously a North -East legend who we’re still proud of to this day.

What a wonderful reminder of original Geordie humour. Seen him on stage in 75-76 at the Odeon, never laughed so much in my life . I worked there and went to get changed and walked in on him getting changed much to my surprise he was in the staff room haha. He was very nice about it and I was hooked after that. Years later my friend Norman who was a TV engineer told me he used to repair his TV and that he was a lovely man. Thanks for the memories 👍👍

Bobby knew where he was best enjoyed. Clubs throughout the North East. His TV show in the late 50s was good, but times changed in the early 60s circa James Bond, Beatles and a different audience. But still a very classy act on stage. Never heard any comedian in history, referring to the Queen as Lizzy.

"Geordie audiences cram into their social clubs and theatres to listen to (a Penshaw Mackem) man who calls himself the little waster."
Now that makes me laugh.... a lot!!

Until about 1975, everybody from Northumberland and Durham were considered, and considered themselves, Geordies. The term was originally used to describe Durham miners. It's only relatively recently that it has been appropriated by Toonies from Newcastle. I'm from Sunderland way, but had never heard the term Mackem uintil about 1972, when I was a teenager.

@@tonygodfrey7813: The term "Makem" comes from Sunderland's ship building heritage.
"We 'mak em' nd ye tak em."
Meaning we make the ships & you (the customer) take them away.

4:23 I think he actually got the lyrics to that song wrong there - it was by Kitty Wells and should have gone:-
The birds were singing in the morning
And the myrtle and ivy were in bloom
And the sun over the hills was a dawning
Twas then I laid her in the tomb

A funny but greedy man. It’s well documented that he would quite often let clubs down at the last minute because he’d been offered a few quid more from a rival club. A club would sell out its concert room and then be let down at the last minute, leaving them with a mad rush to find a quick replacement act.
