Removing hard water stains on windshield

I noticed when cleaning this window it would still leave behind water stains and sometime back in the day I remember seeing a video of something cleaning his house windows this way and wanted to see if it would work on a windshield. I was scared that it would leave scratches so I didn't press down when rubbing the windshield with the steel wool.
