I was listening to this podcast on my run and you manage to convince me to add a hill into the middle of my run after actively avoiding them for 3 weeks. So congrats 👏
@qwerty-or1yg to help, I slow down a bit as I come into the bottom of the hill. Kinda a down shift. Not a lot, just enough to compensate. Then, push a bit as I crest, then any flat after feels easy.
Having broken my femur in August and my ankle the year before, doing a series of static stretches, from quad stretches, pigeon stretch, frog stretches (no other animal types) before a run, all my hobbling disappears. So I believe static stretches work first, then move onto dynamic stretches..
I did a hill workout from Runna a few weeks back. Felt really good during it but my knees were screwed for 10 days after…I’m inclined to think (excuse the pun) that it was because of lazy jogging back down the hill on each rep. Will defo walk back down next time or really be aware of form of jogging back down
I do a 5km social run every Monday night to/from a local brewery in a neighboring hilly town. The course is different every time, but a couple of weeks ago we did an 86m total ascent over 5km. The hillier it is, the more I enjoy it, and I generally manage to keep up with the leader although I'm 72.
Snowdon race is a good one , race to the top and race bloody fast back down . Seen this a few time over the years and the speed that they come down is scary but amazing.
you should do a proper oldschool fell, Race an AS to be exact. and one in support of a local charity or school. I think that would be the furthest from your wheelhouse. I would like to suggest the ‘DRCO Dash’ if you can get to the peak district. great pod thanks
I'm a weirdo, I LOVE hills. The higher the better. I have to stop myself from overdoing it and remind myself there's no shame in running on flat ground occasionally. 😉 Watching this having breakfast before I head off today to run my first half-marathon race (on a hilly course, of course). I may find a new respect for flat ground after this... 🏃♀️➡️⛰️👍
Late to the party on this one. Where I live is pretty hilly and it's hard to even find a flat. I'm doing my first half marathon in September and the course is very hilly (266m total elevation) it's the Potters Half Marathon...so wish me luck. I have hill sprints in my current training programme
Come down to North Dorset in october and do "The Stickler" is only 10 miles, pretty hilly and if the rivers a bit high there might be a nice waist deep puddle to wash the mud off coming off a bridge near the end. Great fun!
From memory Sarah the Knebworth half marathon is hilly but I haven't run it. Bedford Harriers half marathon is uphill almost exclusively for the first nine miles. Tenth mile is completely downhill! If you don't run a negative split in this event you are irretrievably broken! St Neots half also hilly but the last 5km is totally downhill. I don't believe there's a level foot on it at all. Enjoy
I would like to make a suggestion. Can you tailor some advice to improve running times for beginners? I’m currently averaging 8 min p/km and want to get to 6:30. But not all of us are aiming or planning to run a marathon.
South-west London bias too - I lived in Teddington for 4 years and Bushy park was my first ever park run (I didn't know it was the OG back then). I then moved to Wandsworth.. So I can't agree with Andy more. Bushy, Richmond, Wandsworth and Wimbledon - all amazing.
I've learned the hard way that traditional stretching often led to injury for me. So, with all due respect, I'll pass on that. Instead, I've found solace in my own routine-a gentle, deliberate warm-up with a slow run that primes my body for whatever lies ahead.
In high school cross country Wednesdays were hill days! We'd do a warm up mile to the hill, then do 4 repeats, then run back to school. I learned to like hills because of that. Now 15 years later my legs aren't strong enough for that anymore but that just means I need to do hills.
For a big hill but still a fun and social 5k (and with some stellar views), highly recommend Edinburgh's Holyrood Park 5k - roughly the same route as the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 5k in May!
@Sarah - They are called over shoes, and those are essential when temperatures drop below 5 degrees. Or you will need winter specific cycling shoes. Also, cyclist sometimes wear socks below their cycling tights and therefore they are always faffing around in sock sock state :P Thank you for mentioning us poor cyclists.
Come and do the Sandstone Trail Race in Cheshire. It's a long-standing 18 mile point to point race with around 1000m of ascent through beautiful cheshire countryside. Great event.
I do a lot of hilly races, so much fun. Cannock 50 (miles or km) is a good ultra that Anna did last year (there should also be a 10 mile version if Andy wimps out of the Ultra). YPB events do quite a few shorter ones - I'm hoping to go to Apocalypse 10 mile and 7 Sins later this year
I live in Switzerland and where Ilive there’s nooo way to avoid hills, so hill training is key. Plus as a fan of trail running and avid hiker I also try to train with lots of elevation, because as soon as you go into the mountains, you will have to be able to climb uphill & run downhill all the time!
My local Parkrun requires me to go up a steep hill three times - I think it’s done me good as I often pass people on hills during races. Though I recently did a 10 miler with a max elevation of 236m, where I still had to stop and walk after the worst hill.
Hill training runs are my favourite workout. I love only having to do 30 seconds of running then getting a rest each time 😅. Plus I live in Manchester so I have to run half an hour to reach a sufficiently steep hill.
ref the warm up, I joined a running club about 6months ago. The craziest thing for me was the "Right here we go into this group 10km" type attitude with no warm up. So having learned that, I turn up 15mins early to warm up now, but it was crazy to me that was no warm up was considered beforehand.
@@runningchannel I did bring it up. First on our text chain. Suggesting we meet 10 Minutes earlier and do warm up together. I was mocked, told not to waste time on that. The person mocking me didn’t even get to the start line of our marathon, he got injured! Then I just showed up early and did my thing. A few people joined in.
If you need a good hilly race you should all do - there are 2 clear contenders: - Comrades! Surely the ultimate road race with 'a few hills' in? It'd be great to see Andy's mind blown by the idea of running 90km - Everest Marathon: If you want hills - why not go the big one? 🤣 Either would be amazing to see and would be an epic adventure for the whole team!!!!! FYI - I went back to my local hilly trail loop (9km with 250m of elevation), strapping on the trail shoes for the first time in a year.... My "standard loop" went from 48mins last year to 57mins this week!!! I guess hill fitness drops off once you stop running them!!!
incline is great for training but i've had issues with shin splints on incline... so i always have that in the back of my head. tho my legs are much stronger now than they were the last time i dealt with that
Why don't you guys come to South Africa next year. On 9 June 2024 we have our nice hilly Ultra called the Comrades Marathon. You have exactly 1 year to do hill training and next year it will be a down run of 54 miles.
Muddy hills at arrowe park with Dave were the ones that had the biggest impact on me as a kid. Just trying to slog up in trainers though the mulch was terrible, but amazing lol. We’d always do about a mile before and after around the houses. Lots of metal taste in my mouth after those ones!😂
Being from the Netherlands finding a hill will be next to impossible apart from the near some national parks or in the south. But would an incline training be a good alternative on a treadmill to a hill training.
Just finished the Southampton marathon and the hills on that one killed me. Hill work is definitely required. Long runs and tempo work does not prepare you sufficiently for the impact of hills.
I live 10 meters from a long hill, I have run it twice in 15 years.... Hill runners are crazy. .. :-) Anyone in the Running Channel team running Stockholm Marathon this year? June 1
I'm like Sarah, better yet, I prefer videos and gifs as to what Im supposed to do 🤣 thankfully we have access to so many trainers and apps and videos on stretching and cooldown. yall teasing the hell out of each other is so entertaining to watch 🤣🤣 I did a hill workout yesterday and its one of my fave workouts to do. I only use my arms more when I go fast up, and always feel its more a lower body strength workout given next day soreness.
Guys. It’s sock shoe sock shoe. You’ve already got your foot up on something to put your sock on. Why waste energy swapping legs when you can keep the position of your foot the same and put the shoe on
@@skirtonbear1 yes, didn’t even think about that. Also, I think they put it in the bible too! “On the third day Jesus put his sock on then his shoe and then his sock and then his shoe.”

Those winter ‘cycling socks’ are actually called overshoes! Keep your toes dry and toasty in the winter months.
Where I live, I get about 250 meters of elevation gain in a 10k around my neighborhood. Every run is hills training.
Painful but will be amazing come race days 🙌🏻
Me too 😅
@runningchannel our races are just as hilly.
ahah, yeah, can relate, and then your HR skyrockets and it's impossible to keep it down

Hilarious timing for this topic, I just did my first run in the hills this morning- 19.5k and 500m of elevation. Really kicked my butt!
The "not-noticed-a-hill" is such a wonderful feeling of accomplishment! I love when those times come on steeper and longer hills
Having broken my femur in August and my ankle the year before, doing a series of static stretches, from quad stretches, pigeon stretch, frog stretches (no other animal types) before a run, all my hobbling disappears. So I believe static stretches work first, then move onto dynamic stretches..
