Sarah, you've nailed it! I have recently fallen in love with running to help both my physical and mental health. I am still a back at the pack runner but I run because I want to prove I can. Knocked 13 mins off my parkrun and 20 mins off my 10k. Signed up to my first half this weekend where I'll waddle around the Thames hopefully in less than 4 hours. That might seem a long time for most runners but for me that's going to be a proud achievement.
Sarah, you’ve got it!! Running isn’t all about times and places, it’s about the feeling you have at the end of the race, it’s the accomplishment that you’ve done it, the people who you talk to during your marathon/half/10k. The sense they’ve got the same amount of achievement that you have too. Thanks for the podcast, love it. Keep on running all of you.
I agree 100 % with Sarahs rant. Who are these people that saying running a marathon easy and without a time in mind doesn't count? 🤔 I participate in half marathons and marathons first and foremost because of the experience and sense of accomplishment. Time and PB are secondary. By the way, my next full marathon is London in april 2024! My first major! :)
My favourite half marathon ever was Royal Parks half where I paced a friend to a PB. Had such a good time taking selfies, chatting to people and motivating others. Way more fun than any time I've gone for a personal PB.
I may be late to the party here, but I want to say about the marathon times. Not one person I have told I have run a marathon has asked me my time. So many people are just amazed that I've done it. Even other runners have just congratulated me. It's one of the things that has amazed me the most. After other races, I've always been asked about my time, but not after the Yorkshire Marathon. As someone who would have been timed out of the Chicago marathon, it's quite frankly, the best feeling. To just be celebrated for DOING it.
As a Chicagoan I am so proud of my city and the magnificent event we host every October. I wasn't running this year, but I was passing out little paper cups of water at around mile 8. I'm very happy that you and Tom had such a good experience. I saw Kiptum, Chepngetich, Sifan, Emily Sisson and Molly Seidel as they flew past me. I was looking for you guys, but didn't spot you. Come back next year! Cheers!
Thank you for passing out water! I was running and guzzling it down at every opportunity. The crowds were incredible, hands down my favorite race I've done so far (and not just because it was my first marathon)
I can't wait for the Chicago video! It was my first marathon too, and while my pace was a touch slower than I wanted, I've never felt better on a long run. Still feeling buzzed from it!
I live in Chicago and a few of us watch your Channel all the time and recommend your videos especially to new runners who join our team each year who are planning on running Chicago. You're a great resource.
Great point about habit stacking. Being able to form good habits and break bad habits is fundamental to spending time wisely, which is fundamental to leading a good life! Always surprised at society's relative lack of focus on this.
One of my best race experiences was one when I paced and helped a friend through their first half marathon, chatting, motivating, distracting from the actual act of running her first half marathon. Sharing that was very near the feeling I had when I ran my first half marathon.
I love this and abbut about the first question you ask someone after they say they ran a marathon... not about their pace. I'm gearing up to run my first in April, and I'm already dreading that question. I'm even running a half in 2 weeks, and people seem to discredit the effort if it isn't a certain speed. That's almost kept me away from doing these longer distances. Loved Andy's quote, too. Finish Lines not finish times. It's about the journey. I'm not an elite, and that's okay, and my reasons for running are very different than many out there. I'm just happy so many of us get to share in this experience together, whatever the reason that brought us to the race together
I Agee with Sarah. I usually run 2 marathons at speed a year. Al the others are for fun. Coming season I’m running a marathon as pacer/water carrier for a friend ho is running his first. Running is about enjoying yourself.
Well my perfect motivation the night before my first marathon was a shout out from two great mates (one more helpful than the other) lovely surprise and helped me give it everything I had 🙏🏼🎉
Brilliant that you’re loving running again these days! I’ll be sharing this one again :). One thing that’s definitely changed since I started running is the number of people doing it for more than just a time or position. Also, I did that Chicago boat tour in 2013 :D Are they still super proud about changing the river and ruining their neighbour’s beer?
I needed to hear this! Run my first ultra this weekend, also not knowing if I could finish, but I tried to qualify for Comrades. I didn't qualify or even made the cut-off, but I am trying to be proud of the fact that I ran 52km and also ran for 7 hours...
I have run marathons for so many different reasons, the most enjoyable of which have been pacing a friend and doing the run in a new city while on vacation...no better way to see a new place than on foot.
First I watch it on YT with subtitles to get everything as sometimes it's a bit fast or mumbled (better than too slow!) and then I download the podcast to relisten to it on my long runs! You're a fun bunch with a lovely bickering and good natural chemistry!
I've said it before and I'll say it again. You three are amazing, I love you all. Your banter is fabulous. You brighten my day, don't ever change. With regards to the piece about not running for a time, I don't care where I come in a race, which quite often in last place, as I cant run fast as I only started running in 2017 at the age of 70. My aim in a race is just to finish and to know I've run the best I can also knowing that I have beaten millions of other people that can't be bother getting their backside off the couch or get out of bed in morning.Take care all of you and good luck with marathon Andy. Look forword to see your video of it. Well done, Sarahfor running YOUR race in Chicago, can't wait for your video either❤❤❤
For me, as a person who isn't great at self-reflection, the thing I've enjoyed most in marathons is pushing myself, testing my endurance and getting to know myself better as a result.
I watch the video version sitting on the couch, lol. I really enjoy it. Great work, guys. Andy - we did 31 km on trails today, 6 hours, lots of Type 2 fun.
I'm doing my first half marathon next year. I have a time goal I'd like to hit, but my ultimate goal it to prove I can do it. I'm looking for that feeling of accomplishment when the months and months of work to pay off. I started a couch to 5k schedule in May as a way to get in shape. Now I'm trying to collect finisher medals and t-shirts. After the Half Marathon I might move up to a full.
That was very nice. I'm working late from home and it's quiet and you all kept me company as I plodded on on a large project. Bring on the autumn running weather!
Thanks for touching on the motivation for running a marathon. Really spoke to me when I was questioning my reasons for signing up and doing the marathon at the back of the pack (literally packing up the finishing area as I crossed the line).
I can really relate to a lot of this episode being in the thick of Valencia Marathon training like Andy! I did the Great Eastern at the weekend and surprised myself with how 9 weeks of training had actually paid off. As you say, its all about piecing together little bits of the jigsaw for the long-term goal!
Speaking of less daylight in the winter, could you guys do an episode talking about running safety tips? Also, I personally do most of my running on the treadmill because I'm very paranoid and even in broad daylight I don't feel safe at times. Maybe you could do a video about how to make the most out of treadmill runs (for people who don't have a good place nearby to run or in times of year where the weather can be hard to work through)
Victoria Park is where I run and I often wondered if I would ever comes across Sarah or Andy there. And last week (or the week before) I did. Whatsmore, Andy said hello as our paths crossed. Thanks Andy.
I’ve been running for a while but only recently found your podcast! The first question my dad asked me when I finished my first half marathon was ‘so when are you going to run a full one?’ My bubble was well & truly burst! 😂
I actually only watch the podcast here on TH-cam, because I love your humor and interactions with each other and I just think that video delivers it better than audio only. 😁Also, the "easter eggs" in the background always having something to do with the episode is also fun to catch.
I am in the silent majority (or silent minority?) with you Sarah! Participation is so much more important than time for so many people. The only thing that matters is that people enjoy themselves, whatever the motivation.
I’ve run 4 marathons over the last year and finish just under the time cap for each race, 6 hours. But I get the same medal as someone that runs it in 3 hours. For me, it’s about the journey, starting and finishing.
Great podcast again guys. Funny you should mention running backwards, especially on a treadmill. I was in the gym Thursday morning and saw someone walking backwards on a treadmill but after a few minutes one of the trainers at the gym came over and told them to stop. I'm guessing it was due to health and safety.
I'm running a half marathon at the end of next month. I've been training to try for a good time for me at the moment. Maybe even a PB. 2 weeks ago my eldest daughter (19yrs) asked if she could run it. This will be her first half marathon. I'm giving up on a good time and am excited to run with her for her first. To be fair this will be my 22nd half so while I'd like it to be fast, I have many more chances for fast... this might be the only one with my daughter... or the first of many... who knows 😊
On backwards running… Back in my Army 🇦🇺 days we once had a Company Sergeant Major that would have us run hill repeats backwards on our trail runs while running in our boots. It was torture on the quads!
Andy: you mention in passing in this episode how you organise around having kids. I struggle to run consistently juggling parenting, would be interested to hear how your marathon training has fitted around fatherhood! How is the running life organisation going? I recently ran the Lisbon marathon (first marathon!) and it was only really possible to train because I was deployed in Mali (UN deployment) away from my kid! Not recommended though 😂
As far as Trail Marathons vs. Road, I found trails far more physically exhausting. Also in the Midwest US, all of our trails are in wooded areas with roots all over the path. There's not much of that nice gravel you get across the pond. What that means is that you're constantly watching your feet. Look away 2 seconds and its very likely you'll trip. Its recommended you walk hills during trail marathons. All the turns and switchbacks you can't easily hold a constant speed. It can wear you out.
Kneesovertoesguy is a big proponent of using backwards walking to help rehab some kind of knee problem. (Sorry that's half remembered so cant actually remember which issue it's meant to help with)
Out this morning for a gentle slow run. On a very quiet lane, running towards the sun, I couldn't work out what the figure in from of my was doing... she was walking backwards up the hill towards me. Slightly awkward to work our how to let her know about the hazard (me).
Ok, so always listen via TH-cam meaning I also watch, and I have just discovered there is a non TH-cam podcasts every other week (or I think that's what I heard)
Looking at the numbers, Tom started the marathon a long time before Sarah - it's a bit odd. (I'm not giving numbers away either). I wholeheartedly agree with your comments about why people run marathons - surely it's for fun?! It only seems to be road runners who have this waspish 'not worth it unless you get a PB' nonsense, but for his first marathon might it not have been a better idea for him to have waited for your wave? Or could you not do that?
Kiptum is running 300km weeks at times. I hate to say it, but if he keeps that up, I don't think he will stick around. I wish him the very best, his achievement is incredible, but I read an article where even his coach was saying it was a little much at times...
