    There's a lot more to pwm than just noise. Pwm, or pulse width modulation, is the speed that the fets switch at. 1kh=1000 cycles per second. The higher the pwm frequency setting, the faster the fets are switching. This results in smoother throttle modulation and as you have shown, lower RF noise. The trade-off is that the esc is working at a higher duty cycle and will tend to run warmer. Not a huge deal on high turn motors, but it could throw the esc into thermal protection with a lower turn motor, 3s, a heavy rig, etc.

    Im really impressed with the 1080, I’ve used an xl5 hv for a year on my trx4 kit and now I’ve put a 1080 in my new sport kit. The amount of adjustments it has compared to the xl5 hv is unparalleled. It is by far the better of the two.

    • @macp349
      @macp349 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What adjustments does the xl5hv have? Besides sport, race, training, trail and crawl. I have one, just got it, I don't do much except drive it around, so I don't need much. But it would be nice to know what all it could do

    Great video man. I've been using 1080 for a while on my SCX10. You should really try to lower item 10 - Drag Brake Rate to Level 3 and see how it slowly decelarates on the descents. Much needed if you have front heavy truck on the steep downhill. Prevents tipping over due to abruptly stopping on the spot.

    • @ExocagedRC
      @ExocagedRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I only use max brake settings for videos, like you I like my trucks to roll a bit and all I do is steer it when going down things. It seems many scalers want full stop on any incline so that’s why I max things like this out. The Axe is also nice and it will roll exactly the speed you want with the way it works.

    Good show as always. Well, I guess I gotta go out and trade the old Quick run 1060 as a go to, in for an upgrade QR 1080 next build. Besides, I run HobbyWing in everything from Skywalker esc's in my drones, to SeaKing in my boat's, Ez/Quick run in my racers, and even an Axe FOC in my crawler. But buying FOC combos at 200$ a pop, for every crawler build is just pricey. So, an upgrade to the 10BL80, SOUNDS like a fantastic idea. Thanks brother, God knows my ears have become sensitive to the high pitch motor squeal, especially after running those remarkable and outstanding FOC Axe combos. Anyhow, where else can I get a real, informative, unbiased, review, and tech tip?. Than on Exo Caged Rc. 👍 Outstanding.

    • @ExocagedRC
      @ExocagedRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s what this video shows, esc’s are either on or off on the motor output, the hum is the frequency of the pwm you are hearing, by turning it up it gets out of our hearing range and it sounds quieter to us.

    • @lowbudgetrc352
      @lowbudgetrc352 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can add a little heat to the ESC. But on crawlers...shouldn't have anything to worry about. I run my 1080 on the 8K setting.

    • @scottoblander9419
      @scottoblander9419 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Per a recent video from John Holmes, the highest frequency does affect the slow speed startup of his crawlmaster sport negatively

  • @gpaje
    @gpaje 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the great video! So the default setting on the Hobbywing is 8K for PWM frequency. Essentially the higher the frequency, the smoother the power delivery, but the higher heat/stress on the ESC. You also get the secondary benefit of a no noise if you choose the next step up at 16K. Did you check the temps between 8K vs 16K? Though it's a Hobbywing, I'm sure it run well regardless.

    • @ExocagedRC

    Hi, quick question. If I were to go the budget brushless route, is the Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL120 120a esc good for crawling duties? I'm looking for a nice budget sensored system as I am trying to stay away from brushed because it's going into a trail scale rig.... need the longer run times. I'm also looking to pair it with a 17.5t g2 sensored motor from hobbywing.
    My major concern is going down a rock, having it hold with drag brake, then if I give it a little throttle input, I don't want the rig to roll super quick off the rock so wondering if that Hobbywing Quicrun 120a esc can do the job. Thanks!

    • @ExocagedRC
      @ExocagedRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In basic terms it’s how fast the esc pulses are sent to the motor also known as frequency. Lower frequencies we can hear, higher frequencies we cannot.

    • @geligapictures
      @geligapictures 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exocaged RC and how does it effects the control/ drivability of the rc? Why not just select the highest frequency available?

    • @ExocagedRC
      @ExocagedRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well at 1k pwm esc runs cool, motor is loud. 16k pwm esc runs hotter motor is quiet. Depends on what you’re doing as to what’s needed. Slow geared low crawling gets 16k. 3S brushed motor in a Wraith would probably overheat so a lower pwm would be better.

    Installed the 1080 and all seems ok except the diff lockers and the high low gear selector have stopped working ? I have a Bluetooth Traxxas module installed in the TQi controller ? Any help Exo or RC fans out there ?

      The 1080 shouldn’t affect any of that make sure you didn’t unplug those by mistake

      Exocaged RC , checked all connections and everything seems to be plugged in as it was , I think the TQi needs to be re bound with the Receiver, I control two TRX4 with the TQi and somehow the software has become confused , I’m going to blank the profiles on the Bluetooth link software and try re binding , thanks for the help Exo , looking forward to the next video 👍🏻😃

      I just found that the three Smaller servos are blown ! Could it have been setting the BEC up on 7.4v instead of 6v that could of blown the three small servos ?! Plugged a new smaller 2065 servo in all three channels and the servo works on all channels 🤷🏻‍♂️ I tried 7.4v on the BEC to give the 20kg servo some extra power ,! Could this blow all the other servos connected to the receiver box ?! WARNING TO OTHER TRX4 owners out there 😔

      Message to all TRX4 owners running the stock 2065 servos ! Don’t set your 1080 hobbywing at 7.4v , hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else 😔 thanks for the help Exo , expensive lesson 😫

      No. You may have to adjust the esc if there is no drag brake.

    I think I'm going to switch to this system. I'm sick of brown outs. On my gen 7 pro. This motor esc and a bec and a stronger cervo, eventually.

      This esc is good but look at a servo that runs straight from the battery with a JST, those are what I'm moving to on everything and the 46kg is only $50 shipped off ebay. rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FJX-CLS-12V7346-46KG-Metal-Steering-Digital-12V-HV-Coreless-Servo-for-RC-Car-ND%2F163570405375%3Fepid%3D26030002628%26hash%3Ditem26158e4fff%3Ag%3APKcAAOSw-1Zcd7qk&campid=5338273090&toolid=20008

      @@ExocagedRC 46kg is a load of power, I'd love to see a test of it (edit, found your test, did you get a chance to try it on 3s?) I run a 25kg servo and castle bec in my trx-4 and that made a huge difference over stock.

      The 1080 Bec is surprisingly robust. I think the 3a rating is a constant rating, not a peak. I've ran a Savox 1230sg(6.0v) and a Spektrum A6300(7.4v) with a spektrum radio(notorious for being power sensitive) and never suffered a brown out. The only reason I went to an external Bec was because I wanted to supply my A6300 with 8.4v.

    • @ExocagedRC
      @ExocagedRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The the PWM noise from the esc, this noise is a frequency, the frequency is audible and that’s what the high pitch noise is.

  • @CajunManNick1980
    @CajunManNick1980 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The pitch changed to a point that it got so high, the human ear couldn't pick it up anymore. Bet it would drive a dog nuts though, lol. Great comparison though.

    I don't get why people run bl motors/mod brushed set ups in a trail truck/crawler?! I use 27-55 turn brushed motors that are what $12, then I use this 1080 in all my trail trucks & my cr01 too. I run nimh for convenience & have plenty of power & run time. Silly & a waste of money, being an old school racer who rebuilt motors & ran nicd's I love this. Pleanty of linear power & torque from brushed motors, & they last since there hardly turning, which is my point.

    • @ExocagedRC
      @ExocagedRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm actually getting back into the brushed stuff, but one big reason for brushless is way way more torque, more efficient, less maintenance, more wheel speed and in many ways its just a better power system as it makes more power easier. With my heavy vehicles they are brushless but my lighter ones are running brushed perfectly. Check out Holmes Hobbies for the absolute best in motors.

    • @craigstern2902
      @craigstern2902 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ExocagedRC Yes I agree lipo & bl are more efficient, but I can't see spending the money for them or Holmes motors for playing around. I use bl set ups but only in my race cars & trucks. If I couldn't get great torque & power from a $12 gool 55T, 45T, 35T, & 27T motor (with gear reduction) I might think about bl. Holmes hobbies is a waste a money. Back in the day it paid to have hand wound motors for racing, machine wound do just fine. Enjoy this cool hobby while we have decent weather, happy trails! Winter comes & it's all about indoor racing!

And main survo is a hobbywing 1080.. i want to take it off crawler mode.. i dont have a programming card.. is there a way that i could change it to the double click to reverse mode? I liked how i had to be the brake.. not the hobbywing brake.

    Why is the pwm tunable? Will it be a different "best" silent setting for different motors? Not always the highest pwm frequency? I also used xl 5 on my crawlers. Work fine bit this noise irritates me. Will go find me a hobby wing 1080
