    Hey James just got a classic d28 with electric pickup. The factory is incredible to tour. I only live an hour away!
    Beautiful sound

    That's my favorite of your acoustic guitars.
    I had a Shenandoah kit by Martin a D-18 Mahogany back and sided w/spruce top. The person I purchased it from did custom inlay work for Gibson and others. I had endless options. I had all the appointments of a 41 but had a black pick guard and old style open Schaller tuners. It had a wonderful rich high to mid tone to it.
    Unfortunately I went through a divorce and had to sell it...
    Years later my Dad traded his 1970 Gibson J200 acoustic for a D-28 and I received it after he passed away.
    I wouldn't sell it for a million dollars !!!
    I've been a faithful follower and fan of yours for about 5 years now and I really appreciate all the free lessons you provide !!! I've learned so much !!!
    You and your family have a great and safe new year !!!

    The D-41 is a nice guitar and has a distinctive voice. As is the D-35 which has Fogelberg's tone. We will enjoy all you play with this Gem!

    Just to Update on this video as a watcher and person that does miss James! To people looking to buy one...buy on from 2018 and up now. The reason is they now moved the forward shifted x-scalloped bracing just like the 42 and 45 so essentially now you ARE getting a D-45 with just less bling. Uses East Indian Rosewood back and sides and sitka top...only thing I've heard is different is that they use a better grade of top the higher you go...by eye...imo that doesn't mean much unless it's master level....so I'd say pretty much identical 41, 42 and 45 cept bling....we are in another goldne age for acoustics and electrics imo...

    I got a Martin in 2019 after not getting a new acoustic for over a decade. It’s a D16-GT, which go for $1500 retail, but, man, that guitar is the nicest thing I’ve ever gotten for myself. It’s apparently called the workingman’s D28 and the name fits. Love those higher end Martin’s, too. That’s a beauty.

      Honestly they are also very nice people to work with. You can get them on the phone and the guided tours are excellent as said above. I accidentally dragged my family into the old factory (not knowing what I was doing). I figured the wrong door and walked into the assembly area of the 1861 unit. The sales people and learning luthiers assemble the kits there if folks want one built. They kindly walked us out into the showroom and explained the operation as we went. Hell, I didn't even feel too much like an idiot. lol

    The D28 (post-war) and D35 have straight bracing, though thinner in the latter. The HD28, D41, D42 and D45 have scalloped bracing. The scalloped bracing, and the thinner bracing of the D35, allows more reverberation and, all else being equal, more volume and bass. But individual Martins have their own sound, so hard to generalise.

    Nice ax! My 87 D28 has the volute and the morse code inlay on the back, but no purfling around the body. Just the black & white bindings. Had to chuckle when started noodling. I do the same thing and after a long time I jump out of it. It's like it reaches out and grabs your soul. lol. Really nice sound - and sustain. The real difference I believe is the internal hand work on the bracing and attention to fine detail. Maybe a slightly better grade of top wood & the D28 doesn't have that nice headstock with the binding. They are definitely a step above. Won't tell you about my buddy's 67 D28. (brazillian and beautiful and sadly gone)

    Awesome guitar. I was very close to buy one last year but a reimaged amberburst hd28 came home with me instead.Funny thing happens when I go shopping for a Gibson or other accoustic guitar...always end up bringing a Martin home. Hd28, d18ge, 00018ge, om28v and 00015m. My next Martin will be a d28 Marquis if I can find one reasonable.

  • @dhp4095

    Love the D41...it’s a D45 (the top-end Martin) with less bling. My 2017 D41 is a keeper also....not cheap but well worth it if you like a great sounding dreadnought. It’s a Sitka spruce top and East Indian Rosewood back and sides. For me, it’s about the Martin tone...it’s just down right beautiful. JJ is right...it is great with fingerpicking or strumming...but the bonus is-it’s functional art and beautiful to look at as well. I played many high-end Martins and this was the best in my view.

    Beautiful guitar, James, you do it justice....but that pickguard will always bug you.
    Martin used these pixellated guards up until around 2010-2012 (depends on the particular guitar) but now use quality guards made by DelMar: these have a proper tortoiseshell look and a nice bevelled edge. You can order one from a Martin dealer and it would be no trouble at all for a repairman to remove that awful one and replace it with the DelMar. Go on, you know you want to...

    • @jamesjames9275
      @jamesjames9275  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I can't stand the sound of electric-acoustic guitars. I've owned a few, but I ended up going back to just sticking a mic in front of the sound hole. That's the best amplified acoustic tone to my ears. I know people will disagree, but I don't like pickups on acoustic guitars. Don't like cutaways on acoustic guitars, either. I'm old!

    • @allenkennedy6748
      @allenkennedy6748 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 41 and 45 have a different bracing than say the D28. The ornamentation (abalone) is also prevalent on these models. The D41 was originally thought to be a working guitar, the D45 is a presentation guitar (that TV appearance you dream of). They should sound identical and if you got the bucks and want to pay the Martin guy for weeks of inlay work, get the 45. The 28 however, is the one that is on more albums, tv and film soundtracks than any other guitar (the old Gibson slope shoulder J40 running a close second). Tony Rice, God rest his soul, played a D28 that Doc Watson gave him. Guitarists are conservative. They go for sound. The rest of us are wowed by $ and flash. So many things artists don’t tell you. The J200 became popular because Jumbos are “quieter” than dreadnoughts. To a wannabe, that sounds like a negative. It’s not. Acoustic ensemble music depends on blend, not every guitar being out front all the time. Buy what you can hear. The visual part will usually follow.

    not too long ago, I went to purchase a D-41 Guitar, ordered it, it arrived at GC and when I lifted it out of the case I almost threw it through the roof it was so light, felt like Balsa wood or a model of a guitar..... It was the new Re-imagined Martins,,, In my opinion they destroyed Martin.. It felt and sounded so cheap, it was horrible.... as a matter of fact a $900 guild played 10 x's better... on another note, in one of your other videos you posted I told you if you need guitar space I'll take that one off your hands, just let me know.... beautiful guitar.....

    • @Markle2k
      @Markle2k 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't comment on the sound of that particular instrument, but light does not equal cheap. In fact, it is a common thing that extremely high-quality guitars are extremely fragile compared to mass-produced instruments. Solid wood cracks, laminate doesn't. Solid wood is more sensitive to temperature and humidity changes, especially when you are combining different types of wood for fancy inlays or marquetry. Natural lacquer cracks, polyurethane doesn't. And, as to weight, shaving bracing to tune the top doesn't add mass.
