Playing it on the Switch felt like discovering the game for the first time.
The original version of Link's Awakening was the first Zelda game I've ever played and the DX version was the first one I owned for myself. So I got a massive nostalgia it with this remake!

LA was also the first Zelda i ever played, back then on the GameBoy. But I was barely 5 years old then and simply too young for it. Then 1-2 years later I got a super nintendo and lost interest in the Game Boy. But, playing it on the switch now, I actually do remember quite a bit from the GameBoy version back then and it's quite amazing, to able to experience such a 'back to the roots' adventure. And in my case, as a huge Zelda fan, its actually the base of the root, this game!

8:10 "link's awakening is just a solid 2d zelda game" i think this statement undersells the game. i've played and finished every console zelda game since and including link to the past (except link's awakening, ironically, i haven't finished it) plus the minish cap. and yeah, pretty much all of those games are stellar. they're all so good that i think what distinguishes one game from the others isn't how good it is as a standalone zelda game, but what makes it unique from the rest of the games. we should consider that, as a zelda game, many of the tropes and aspects of the game will follow the "zelda formula", if you will. so while link's awakening may not be the most radical or advanced game by some of these metrics, when we instead focus on what makes the games unique - in this case, the story, the atmosphere, and possibly most critically the existential, philosophical nature of the story and the dialog/text of the game. with that in mind, much like majora's mask, link's awakening brings a unique type of whimsy to the player that's not seen in other zelda games. and yeah, sure, while other zelda games have some sort of uniqueness about them, if i'm making a top 5 zelda games list, the uniqueness and draw of link's awakening insists that i put it on that list.

Links Awakening was the first Zelda game i played and it was the best experience my 6yo mind could handle. I loved the story and the quirkiness of it all but most of all, the music. Tal Tal Heights will forever be engrained in my mind. The remake is a pretty good adaptation of the OG with great quality of life improvements but my bias will always make me choose the original version every single time.

Beat the remake last night, and immediately dived back in to play the DX version for GBC right after. Such a wonderful game, with a fantastic remake. It's telling that gameplay and design wise, so little actually changed from the original. It was already a very good Zelda game, but the presentation and music on switch provided a truly incredible tribute to such a beloved title. Hats off to Nintendo EPD and GREZZO, I would love to see what they can do with other top-down Zelda games.

I was mostly happy with the remake, but I was disappointed that they changed the mechanics of the fire rod. In the GBA version it basically is so powerful in all cases it breaks the game, which is okay because it's the last item you get--literally immediately after you get it you beat the level 8 boss and then go on to the wind fish's egg. (Or you could do what I did and do Enter Turtle Rock Early trick and use it to help with dungeon 7). In nay case the remake made it less punchy. It doesn't feel as good to use, which was kinda disappointing. Also you can't set chickens on fire with it anymore

For me I cannot stand the remake for a multitude of reasons, besides like removing the photo album which worked more into the idea of the game with memories. I don't like how the atmosphere is ruined (the game is too bright and at some points the game doesn't stand out in certain sections anymore, see the screen of you fighting the big stalfos boss, same for quite some music tracks with the best standout track being the 6th dungeon which I was never really a fan of in the original but most other tracks in the game feel wrong instrumented or lack musical direction for what they want to be, heck the creepy parts of most dungeon music themes is lost where it had a "stalking" nature to it, being watched etc.. I also don't like, for a 100% completionist and also FOMO struggling person that the remake is an already easy Zelda title a huge disfavor with being even easier, even more handholdy, changing the (german) localisation in a negative way where it loses it's charm of being sarcastic at times or cheeky. And for what? Extra heart containers you don't need cuz the refill ingame is very cheap in compare for like ALTTP? It feels like stretching out game time with the optional "new" stuff.
So overall, while the GBC game is limited with items and their usages, I can totally get behind if you come from 3D Zelda games or ALTTP to this, I still think the GBC version also is the superior game showing off quite some astonishing "this was on GBC?!" stuff with the hardware specs. Also the photo album could have easily been expanded which I thought would be likely to happen instead, but no, just some dampe fanservice and a quite pointless and unrefined zelda dungeon maker that is rather a "puzzle yourself a dungeon made from rooms already existing", which feels like halfassed insulting to me.

play the GameBoy Colour DX version or original. the switch remake just... no, the artstyle doesn't look right in 3d, they should've stuck to the original artwork and based the remake's look on the artwork instead of the ingame graphics of the GBC version. I'm serious that it is off putting.
Xenoblade 1's Definitive edition is slightly more tolerable but I still dislike it for the artstyle change, instead of taking the original artstyle of the game and making it look good, they threw it out.

  • @StomachPlug

So I'm a big fan of your videos but as a major fan of the original and DX I've gotta say that there are some major gameplay differences between the GB/GBC and Switch versions that you've completely skipped over or somehow didn't notice.
Firstly is that in the GB/GBC versions Link moves at something like 125% of the speed he does on Switch. Even taking the slow screen transitions of the 2D versions into account Link is still considerably faster.
Next is that the Switch version has this weird glitch where if your sword connects with a wall or object before an enemy it actually completely loses its hitbox and can't inflict damage during that attack. The sword also doesn't pick up items across its entire length like in the original.
Another notable change with the sword is charging the sword up fo a spin attack. In the remake it halves Link's movement speed, has considerably long endlag when stabbing an enemy, and on top of that it doesn't even affect a large number of objects/enemies (such as the flying tile traps or the Genie boss's bottle, among others).
Some minor issues also occur from the original design not being intended for a 3D game. One example is that the Roc's Feather in the original game provided brief invincibility during the jump in but being fully 3D means that many instances where you could jump over enemies or attacks in the original are no longer possible. It also means that attacks out of a jump need to be timed to hit enemies based on elevation.
Lastly, getting rid of screen transitions in the remake has lead to a number of areas where offscreen enemies can activate earlier than intended and get cheap shots on the player. This is actually a much bigger issue than it sounds like because Hero Mode doubles damage that the player receives and this game is notorious for having a special ending that only plays if you don't suffer any Game Overs.
Lastly it's noteworthy that most of the major QOL changes in the Switch version are available as mods for the 2D versions if you are emulating the game.
In any case, both games are very good and I love them both dearly. I just don't think it's as close to a 1-1 remake as you seem to believe.

5:25 In the original, the blocks at each corner of the room would indicate the room order, they just changed the way it was conveyed out, since now everyone could play it in colour (The DX version was still compatible with black & white game boys, so they couldn't convey information through colour in the same way there, outside of the exclusive colour dungeon).
Also it's somewhat incorrect to say that the western versions all had the mermaid bra censored, since that only affected the English language versions in the west. The black & white French version (and possibly the German version as well) still had the bra uncensored, as well as the female hippo naked. The DX version is when those localised versions started being censored as well.

  • @MAKgargos

The best version is still the original. It is easy to explain: This game was designed with the hardware limitations and this was almost perfectly done. Especially the graphics work with the story. This is one of the few examples where I count this as a story away from the usual Ganon-catches-Zelda "stories".
This story is dark and nihilistic and here the green-gray fits perfectly. Even the DX is too much and the additional dungeon is not good. Then the minor censorship (also in the German version).
The Switch port looks amazing, but it's nothing for this game. The additional dungeon maker is just bad.
But probably for new players it's the best version with modern graphics, good sounds and more than 4 buttons.
But overall the original has a touch of creativity. You had only 2 action buttons, but they invented the bomb-arrow, running and jumping in Zelda, reused running with sword and made the shield to an actual usable item.

GBC. The Switch version looks like a baby cell phone game. GBC has a mystical and haunting feel that nothing else could possibly match.
I think it's important to acknowledge that the GB, GBC, and Switch are separate artistic media. You can't just keep updating the graphics/sounds/etc. because you think that makes it better, you have to demonstrate an understanding of what made the original great.
