I personally felt that this is the new gold standard for retro remakes. Though I loved how they did Trials of Mana, this was both respectful to the original feel and style while updating it just enough to be interesting to contemporary audiences
I still can’t get over the fact there was a game in 1994 with this type of plot lines (if you know you know), and then to have them all intertwine in the end game and bring them full circle was just chef kiss. This was definitely what octopath traveler was trying to go for This game was so ahead of its time, looking forward to Chrono Trigger being the next HD-2D game *dot dot dot*
It's honestly crazy just how unique they were able to make each chapter within the same mechanics back on the Super Famicom. It also made me appreciate Octopath even more for how it's clear it was trying to do its own take on the formula instead of just being a Live A Live 2.

This is so lovely to see Live-A-Live is one of my favorite games ever made, and this is everything I ever wished for The visuals, the improvements, Akira no longer sucking, an arrangement of MEGALOMANIA... There's so many good things about this remake, and I can't stop smiling every time I think about it

the HD 2D remakes really makes me want to see chrono trigger in that style, and other classics like terranigma.. as well as, (of course!) all the pixel final fantasy games, would be so cool!
Looking forward to both the FF13 and Trails from Zero videos. Huge fan of the Trails series and have played several versions of Trails from Zero in the past so curious how the official release will stack up and your approach to reviewing it. Also my only understanding of the FF13 PC version is that it needs a bunch of fixes or mods to be stable and even more to be on par with the Xbox BC upgrade so curious on your approach to covering FF13 as well.
I loved the remake. But neglecting pogo's line really pissed me off. Either the japanese staff could have the foresight of recording the english line, or the english staff could've voiced that single important line by someone with a similar voice, don't know. Something would be better than ignoring the line and stepping on it by enforcing the error on the subtitles, which is what they did.

The Live-A-Live soundtrack was Ms. Shimomura’s first work with Square. The game’s original MIDI files were wisely lost. Therefore, she arranged the soundtrack with a live band and orchestra, instead of retrieving the MIDI files, and I’m glad about that. Hence, Live-A-Live’s soundtrack got better treatment than that of Trials of Mana.
I played and beat Live A Live last december. Never in a million years did I expect this remake. I hope i'll get to play it one day as I don't own a switch.
It always seems weird to me when people use "NTSC" as shorthand to refer to the North American market, when it's also used in Japan. If you look at PS1/PS2 games, you'll see Japanese games are coded "NTSC-J" vs "NTSC-U" for North American games.
To be fair, it's also used in Australia and New Zealand as well. It isn't a "people" thing as much as it is a federal one. Something to do with hertz or whatnot. Same reason why Europe is PAL and so forth.
I always laugh when even today people still refer to euro / aus/nz releases as PAL versions. Same with the NTSC, NTSC and PAL are old analog TV standards. No such thing as NTSC and PAL versions anymore.
@@asra-5180 Nah, Square Enix doesn't want anyone spoiling the final chapter so they've blocked the ability to record or screenshot it from the Switch and have been calling copyright strikes on TH-cam LPs of that section. That's why AustinSV said he can't show anything from that chapter early on in this video.
Looking forward to the FF XIII video. I enjoyed that game a ton, and originally played the PS3 version before switching to the 360 after our PS3 died. I want tot know if the PC versions hold up well.

I just finished the SFC version and Square-Enix/historia did a wonderful job with the remake and made the game even better than it already was. The stupid censorship is a bummer but If I had to choose which version to play I would probably prefer the remake.
Saw another video comparing the switch to the super famicom version and used reasons such as pogo's new grunts are too human like and the new character select page not having funky wallpaper backgrounds. Honestly thought it was satire.
Just finished the game, I think the remake indeed did a good job at making good balancing while maintaining most of what original game has (even then, the translation problem wasn't present in some of the languages, like the Korean and Chinese subtitles are still faithful to the Japanese one) Definitely would recommend the game to people who want to try out or just want to play a game alike, though for a game that takes at most 30 hours some people may find the remake too expensive
Good to know. I will definitely play the original before playing the switch version. Visually, the switch version is obviously way better. I love pixel art, so 3d-2d pixel art games are beautiful to me.
The censorship is almost certainly not due to CERO but due to Squenix's "ethics department" or whatever they called it. Alcohol and tobacco might have been removed to get a lower rating, but the lingerie wouldn't have been a problem.

Gotta love the 1080p resolution on display for an HD-2D game on switch finally. I liked Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy a lot, but gosh Pixel art sprites don't look good when the pixels are blurry and deserve to be sharply rendered in all there blocky goodness, so I appreciate the developer team seemed to tone down the post processing effects to be able to hit the Switch's native docked resolution.
well, just wait when the timed-exclusive or... it exists. I don't know. will go all out on multplatform in the future that it allows for huge improvements on graphics department and other things. and if it still persists from the original release, you can always count on the modders.
@@arhturcosta4066 I own a Switch, but was hoping for PC ports of Triangle Strategy and Live A Live. It's good news that it sounds like it turned out better than Octopath Traveler, but playing that on Switch really made me wish for an options menu or being able to mods things to my liking. If they don't come after a year or so I'll just buy them on Switch, but I really hope other versions are announced. (When Nintendo brings the next console it would be nice if we could get updates for things like resolution boosts and higher framerates though too. Because I'd be shocked if it's not backwards compatible with Switch.)

The original Live A Live first came out in Japan during my freshman year of high school. It was developed in a time video game age rating boards, and in a time before social media and cellphones. My mom was 49 at the time of the original Live A Live, and my second older brother is around that age at the time of the remake. I didn’t have access to the Internet back then.

Hope this game get released on Steam one day. Octopath Traveller was originally a Nintendo exclusive before coming to Steam a year later. One of my biggest issues was the enemy encounters in the final chapter were too repetitive and were usually a pain to deal with. Does anyone know if there's more variety or if the enemies are at least more bearable to fight?
Yeah I believe they changed it in the remake, but this is just an observance. The encounter rate doesn't seem to have changed much, but it definitely feels like they slightly lowered it, and the enemy formations change as your party levels. I hope this helps!
@@fieryrebirth The formations do change in the original as well, it's just that when your levels start to peak, you end up fighting the same handful of formations over and over. One in particular features enemies with extremely high defence that counter attacks by inflicting all manner of debuffs and stat aliments to the entire party.
@@thatoneguy4452 I know the enemy you're describing. It's an "anti-aoe" enemy that usually requires a good multi-hit attack to bring it and it's nasty "bad breath" attack out of the fray.
It's taken me some time to get to the remake due to a lot of other games taking up my attention, but I will buy it this month. It's been so long since I played the fantranslation that I hardly even remember how it went, so script changes and game rebalancing probably won't even gonna register... still, could be fun to replay the original after I'm done with the remake and see how it feels in comparison.
I just finished this game and did not expect to fall in love with it like I did. It's such a charming and unique adventure with a memorable soundtrack and fun characters. I really enjoyed every single chapter, even the ones I didn't think I'd be too keen on. There's part of me that really wishes the game was just longer and that there was more of it, but at the same time I recognize how it really doesn't overstay its welcome, and accomplishes everything it needs to even in the shorter chapters.
Yeah, it already pads out the finale with several extra hours that some feel don't need to be there (as it kills the pacing a bit), so to each his own, I guess. I just wish the original ROM had been included with a translation patch, either official or the fan version. (Honestly, I would have preferred the fan version.)

Haha, I just wrote the same thing above. I'm amazed how many of these remakes don't bother including the original version. Even the Spyro and Crash remakes left out the originals. Again, why? Why not just throw the original ISOs on the disc for preservationist and comparison's sake?
@@pacario9625 That's a lot of extra work. These old games would need some form of emulation to get them running on modern hardware. Honestly, it's a very niche request and not worth doing so.
@@RicochetForce Nah, it would actually be incredibly easy to, say, emulate SNES Live a Live on the Switch. And that goes for most games from the '90s. Any modern system can emulate them with ease, and the emulators are everywhere.

Most remakes don't include the original versions because that's a step too far, and the budgets likely don't cover the work and QA needed to make sure these emulation efforts are good and stable.
@@RicochetForce There's no reason for it to be "a step too far." It'd be easy to do, cheap, and, frankly, it makes a lot of sense to have the original attached to the remake. And some titles, like Monster World 4, do just that.
I tried out the SFC version a couple of times and never felt like I got a bead on the gameplay, so never played too much into it. That being said I really love the visual asthetic of the remake. I'd love to get it but I think I need a deep discount before I take the plunge on remake. But I am really stoked for that DQ3 remake. Wish they'd stop teasing us.
It's a pity the original Live A Live wasn't included along with the remake--it always irks me when this is the case. How hard is it to include both? Square did do this for Trials of Mana, translating both the original and the remake--not too difficult, since both versions more-or-less share the same script. And since the Live A Live remake is also similar to the original, most of the same translation could have been used. Or, simply use the fan version! That would have been even more awesome.
I can see why, honestly: - Lacks most of the remake's UI addons, which would definitely stop non-ogs from playing it. - Censorship. - Most people would prefer to play it once, and use the remake for that. It's honestly filling memory space for something that's not that important and most people would ignore me.

And since the new version does change the original script a bit, including the original game would respect the original team's work and contribution. Now, sadly, the original is destined to be replaced by this one; let them live (no pun intended) side by side, I say.
@@pacario9625 Well, I'd say that's already taken care of actually, with the original rom dump (which people can learn Japanese to read and have it unfiltered/uncensored), and the original fan translation (which may have ha some translation things fall through the cracks, due to not having a direct english variant for some things). Personally, I agree with the OP in the sense that, if I'm gonna play a game, I usually try to go straight to the best possible version of it, so that I can get the most complete experience in one playthrough. For instance, Final Fantasy 1. The original, broken as hell NES release is romdumped and easily obtained if anyone wants to play that thing, but why would I, when I can just go straight to the PSP version. It has ALL the content the previous iterative remakes have, and more, the best graphics of all the versions, and the most polish (few glitches, aside from the one glitch that persisted in all versions: The critical hit bug). I can just play the PSP version, and experience everything the game has to offer in one playthrough. To me, that defines a good remake: The quality, quality of life and polish are ramped up, all possible content from previous versions, and new content, all in one complete package. Other well done remake examples include, but are not limited to: Final Fantasy 2 PSP, Final Fantasy 4 PSP, Pokemon Fire Red, Pokemon HeartGold, Crash N Sane Trilogy, etc. No matter how much nostalgia I may have for the original versions (which are easily accessed through emulation), why would I tell someone to play Pokemon Red as their first experience with Kanto, when FireRed exists, and does everything Red does but better and more polished?
The remake’s soundtrack was recorded with live instruments as opposed to MIDI as in the original. That’s the way I prefer video game music to be arranged.
I try not to support anything with censorship.. but this is such a fascinating and unlikely release I had to grab it. Such a cool game. Worth playing both versions.
This, without changing plot lines and dialogue, is *EXACTLY* what I wanted for Final Fantasy 6, and the prior FF games. It just proves that they _could_ do it, but just chose not to, which is a shame :(

I really miss "your eyes are as blue as window cleaner" and Matsu's Pissed Fist attack :( And yeah the censorship is unacceptable in 20-fucking-22 and the localizers dropped the ball so hard on Pogo's first word that it crashed through the Earth's crust and popped out in China. This game is near perfect, the music, stories, visuals, and pacing is stellar! This game makes me want to play the original so badly. No wonder Toby Foxx is such a big fan of this game!
@@eamonndeane587 Well Actraiser (by the same developer as Illusion of Gaia) got a remake last year so maybe there's hope to see the whole Resurrection Trilogy and Robotrek get some love in the future too.
Turn off the voice acting, tutorial pop up screen as well as the mini radar on the bottom right, and the remake will be closer to the original but with enhanced graphics.
It seems more like Square-Enix is revising their old games through censorship rather than anything else. I'm sure someone will use other translation patches into the game.
Considering how much Censorship has changed in many years, they don't really have much choice considering More Mature Rated Game Might Appeal less too some people, Especially with how many teenager at the time
@@dynamitoriel9056 Higher age-rated games have never deterred gamers. I'm not sure how old you are, but all you needed to do was get parents to buy the game for you. They hardly ever knew or didn't care. It's more a traditional practice to keep ratings low. Square-Enix is doing it more to appeal to DEI policies and funding they are gaining at this point and evident from what their Ethics Department has said.

The original game still holds, but that extra final boss phase in the remake is so well done which alone makes that my preferable version.
I was shocked on how much more terrifying the behemoth was in the remake. Thought he looked kinda cute in the original.

I remember trying to play Live A Live on ZSNES way back in the day and I could never get into it.
Just finished the game, I think the remake indeed did a good job at making good balancing while maintaining most of what original game has (even then, the translation problem wasn't present in some of the languages, like the Korean and Chinese subtitles are still faithful to the Japanese one)
Definitely would recommend the game to people who want to try out or just want to play a game alike, though for a game that takes at most 30 hours some people may find the remake too expensive

Good to know. I will definitely play the original before playing the switch version. Visually, the switch version is obviously way better. I love pixel art, so 3d-2d pixel art games are beautiful to me.

The censorship is almost certainly not due to CERO but due to Squenix's "ethics department" or whatever they called it. Alcohol and tobacco might have been removed to get a lower rating, but the lingerie wouldn't have been a problem.
CERO definitely wouldn’t have been a problem seeing as how the original was put on the New 3DS virtual console with a B rating.

Gotta love the 1080p resolution on display for an HD-2D game on switch finally. I liked Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy a lot, but gosh Pixel art sprites don't look good when the pixels are blurry and deserve to be sharply rendered in all there blocky goodness, so I appreciate the developer team seemed to tone down the post processing effects to be able to hit the Switch's native docked resolution.
well, just wait when the timed-exclusive or... it exists. I don't know. will go all out on multplatform in the future that it allows for huge improvements on graphics department and other things. and if it still persists from the original release, you can always count on the modders.
@@arhturcosta4066 I own a Switch, but was hoping for PC ports of Triangle Strategy and Live A Live. It's good news that it sounds like it turned out better than Octopath Traveler, but playing that on Switch really made me wish for an options menu or being able to mods things to my liking. If they don't come after a year or so I'll just buy them on Switch, but I really hope other versions are announced. (When Nintendo brings the next console it would be nice if we could get updates for things like resolution boosts and higher framerates though too. Because I'd be shocked if it's not backwards compatible with Switch.)
@@infasis I heard from a discord channel that they managed to dataopen secretly on the game's files suggesting that there is controle inputs of PS4/5 and PCs. Meaning that a port to other devices is tecnicallly possible. so, the question is... when?

The original Live A Live first came out in Japan during my freshman year of high school. It was developed in a time video game age rating boards, and in a time before social media and cellphones. My mom was 49 at the time of the original Live A Live, and my second older brother is around that age at the time of the remake. I didn’t have access to the Internet back then.

-The 3 inheritors can learn all of the Shifu's moves through level up even in the SFC original.
-Taroimo no longer gets dragged out of Steel Titan during the Near Future ending, allowing you to unequip any items he had that you want Akira to bring to the ending.

I've definitely been concerned over the 'localization' in the remake, and the overall experience of the gameplay, but now I am much more prepared for an informed decision, whether I end up purchasing the game or not, sooner or later.

Hope this game get released on Steam one day. Octopath Traveller was originally a Nintendo exclusive before coming to Steam a year later.
One of my biggest issues was the enemy encounters in the final chapter were too repetitive and were usually a pain to deal with. Does anyone know if there's more variety or if the enemies are at least more bearable to fight?
Yeah I believe they changed it in the remake, but this is just an observance. The encounter rate doesn't seem to have changed much, but it definitely feels like they slightly lowered it, and the enemy formations change as your party levels. I hope this helps!
@@fieryrebirth The formations do change in the original as well, it's just that when your levels start to peak, you end up fighting the same handful of formations over and over. One in particular features enemies with extremely high defence that counter attacks by inflicting all manner of debuffs and stat aliments to the entire party.
@@thatoneguy4452 I know the enemy you're describing. It's an "anti-aoe" enemy that usually requires a good multi-hit attack to bring it and it's nasty "bad breath" attack out of the fray.
I just ran away, bearing in mind running from fights aktivates a hidden Boss, so i guess in that sense it helps

It's taken me some time to get to the remake due to a lot of other games taking up my attention, but I will buy it this month. It's been so long since I played the fantranslation that I hardly even remember how it went, so script changes and game rebalancing probably won't even gonna register... still, could be fun to replay the original after I'm done with the remake and see how it feels in comparison.
I just finished this game and did not expect to fall in love with it like I did. It's such a charming and unique adventure with a memorable soundtrack and fun characters. I really enjoyed every single chapter, even the ones I didn't think I'd be too keen on. There's part of me that really wishes the game was just longer and that there was more of it, but at the same time I recognize how it really doesn't overstay its welcome, and accomplishes everything it needs to even in the shorter chapters.
Yeah, it already pads out the finale with several extra hours that some feel don't need to be there (as it kills the pacing a bit), so to each his own, I guess. I just wish the original ROM had been included with a translation patch, either official or the fan version. (Honestly, I would have preferred the fan version.)

Haha, I just wrote the same thing above. I'm amazed how many of these remakes don't bother including the original version. Even the Spyro and Crash remakes left out the originals. Again, why? Why not just throw the original ISOs on the disc for preservationist and comparison's sake?
@@pacario9625 That's a lot of extra work. These old games would need some form of emulation to get them running on modern hardware. Honestly, it's a very niche request and not worth doing so.
@@RicochetForce Nah, it would actually be incredibly easy to, say, emulate SNES Live a Live on the Switch. And that goes for most games from the '90s. Any modern system can emulate them with ease, and the emulators are everywhere.

Most remakes don't include the original versions because that's a step too far, and the budgets likely don't cover the work and QA needed to make sure these emulation efforts are good and stable.
@@RicochetForce There's no reason for it to be "a step too far." It'd be easy to do, cheap, and, frankly, it makes a lot of sense to have the original attached to the remake. And some titles, like Monster World 4, do just that.
I tried out the SFC version a couple of times and never felt like I got a bead on the gameplay, so never played too much into it. That being said I really love the visual asthetic of the remake. I'd love to get it but I think I need a deep discount before I take the plunge on remake.
But I am really stoked for that DQ3 remake. Wish they'd stop teasing us.

It's a pity the original Live A Live wasn't included along with the remake--it always irks me when this is the case. How hard is it to include both? Square did do this for Trials of Mana, translating both the original and the remake--not too difficult, since both versions more-or-less share the same script. And since the Live A Live remake is also similar to the original, most of the same translation could have been used. Or, simply use the fan version! That would have been even more awesome.
I can see why, honestly:
- Lacks most of the remake's UI addons, which would definitely stop non-ogs from playing it.
- Censorship.
- Most people would prefer to play it once, and use the remake for that.
It's honestly filling memory space for something that's not that important and most people would ignore me.

And since the new version does change the original script a bit, including the original game would respect the original team's work and contribution. Now, sadly, the original is destined to be replaced by this one; let them live (no pun intended) side by side, I say.

@@pacario9625 Well, I'd say that's already taken care of actually, with the original rom dump (which people can learn Japanese to read and have it unfiltered/uncensored), and the original fan translation (which may have ha some translation things fall through the cracks, due to not having a direct english variant for some things).
Personally, I agree with the OP in the sense that, if I'm gonna play a game, I usually try to go straight to the best possible version of it, so that I can get the most complete experience in one playthrough. For instance, Final Fantasy 1. The original, broken as hell NES release is romdumped and easily obtained if anyone wants to play that thing, but why would I, when I can just go straight to the PSP version. It has ALL the content the previous iterative remakes have, and more, the best graphics of all the versions, and the most polish (few glitches, aside from the one glitch that persisted in all versions: The critical hit bug). I can just play the PSP version, and experience everything the game has to offer in one playthrough. To me, that defines a good remake: The quality, quality of life and polish are ramped up, all possible content from previous versions, and new content, all in one complete package.
Other well done remake examples include, but are not limited to: Final Fantasy 2 PSP, Final Fantasy 4 PSP, Pokemon Fire Red, Pokemon HeartGold, Crash N Sane Trilogy, etc.
No matter how much nostalgia I may have for the original versions (which are easily accessed through emulation), why would I tell someone to play Pokemon Red as their first experience with Kanto, when FireRed exists, and does everything Red does but better and more polished?

The remake’s soundtrack was recorded with live instruments as opposed to MIDI as in the original. That’s the way I prefer video game music to be arranged.
I try not to support anything with censorship.. but this is such a fascinating and unlikely release I had to grab it. Such a cool game. Worth playing both versions.

This, without changing plot lines and dialogue, is *EXACTLY* what I wanted for Final Fantasy 6, and the prior FF games.

@@dynamitoriel9056 Higher age-rated games have never deterred gamers. I'm not sure how old you are, but all you needed to do was get parents to buy the game for you. They hardly ever knew or didn't care. It's more a traditional practice to keep ratings low. Square-Enix is doing it more to appeal to DEI policies and funding they are gaining at this point and evident from what their Ethics Department has said.

It betrays itself at every aspect, like women's equality day ads complaining they get to "only" be one-third of the board of directors despite being half the population (which is a lot anyway let alone if we're contradicting ourselves by telling kids a woman is a feeling, it becomes irrelevant).
