- You KNOW you’re in for a good time when you see wheelie bars, and big tires on an old station-wagon at a drag strip. Sure enough, it’s first pass down the track brought smiles to ALL of our faces - pulling the wheels and doing a double-wheelie effortlessly! This car has come a long ways, and we can’t wait to see it again soon!

My mom had one of those when I was a kid! Every car my parents had when I was young has become cool in some way. Hope to see more of this Vega wagon.
Back when we hit the local track in the late 80s, the Vega's ruled the strip.
Thats when I built mine. I had the rare trunk model, not the hatchback.

I'm usually *NOT* a fan of Vegas. The wagons, I can tolerate sometimes...
But *this* one is siiiick! I Love it!

I saw a Vega station wagon in 1983 in Richardsville,Kentucky. I had been visiting with my Uncle and Aunt and was on my way back to Bowling Green.

More like 2500lb car with 800ish hp and real tires.. That car could probably hook on gravel.
Actually it's a No Prep race and the car makes about 1400 and it's 3050lbs. You are right though, it hooks everywhere.

real nice ! i figure with a pro touring setup those little Vegas would also make for a fun autocross/ road course track race car.
I wish there were times and mph on those runs. That Vega is sweet!
Cool part was that a big block would fit with two modifications that I remember you had to cut a small piece out to fit the starter selenoid and some hammering to fit the trans bellhousing

adjust your wheelie bars closer to the ground, alot closer. rebound wont b so bad and u can get on full throttle sooner. u have one badass car, great video
Exactly. "We weren't expecting that. I don't know what happened " Duh.. Don't spend a fortune making power then take power out of it. Adjust the suspension to put it to the ground. And Adjust the the wheelie bars so they are about an inch and a half off the ground. Are you making top fuel power? NO! Then you don't need to take power out, you need to put it to the ground and go forward NOT UP.
so cool, my first car was a 71 vega 2 door panel express,when i first got it the front end was messed up from doing wheelies(sb400 nitro), it had 4inch diamond tucked turned black interior,comp orange had special delivery on the panels and a tiny naked lady on the back hatch and said "Runnin Bare" next to it, it had a 350, 3/4 cam 12.5 comp and hooker sidepipes no mufflers. when i had it

If this is the same old green big block Vega Wagon that ran around the east side of Indy back in the 70s and 80s it's nice to see it running after all these years. Back then it had gold lettering on the side rear window. Something like King Rat, Rat Attack, Street Rat or something like that. It had a big hood scoop with a tunnel ram and a turbo 400. Best of luck.
I had a 73 panel wagon that ran around on the east side of Indy called the Vega Express. Small block, automatic with a mean shift kit, ran High 12

We need to see some of his cars. Notice the guy said he had weight in the front end to hold it down. He could always take weight out to make it hook harder on a track that's loose.

Had a friend in high school with a sb400 in a little Monza. That car was straight up nutty. I might actually start looking for a good platform....if they can still be found.
I just love fast carbureted vintage cars. Got a '72 Pinto wagon I've considered turning into a drag racer, but the cost would be a bit high compared to using something with a stronger structure.

My 2300 cc Vega wagon with 3-spd Saginaw would have taken about 5 minutes to get down that track. Vegas built properly became dominant in the Pacfic Northwest, until Ken started up Rapid Rotary...

Looking at the motor and knowing it has "1" kit I'd guesstimate 800ish and the car might weigh 2800 with him in it.. so math is telling me high 8's low 9's and unlimited traction. but that's 30 years of being a drag racer and reading cars. If times popped up I'd point at that range for the car and mid to high 5's in the eighth.

The odds of there being 2 fairly identical 71 vega's while possible not probable but I got a dollar to a Donut that this is the Wooly Mammoth with a haircut....I mean hell it swapped owners like 3 times on Pinks and if I ain't mistaken the Boys in OKC had it for a bit it has been a well traveled little critter.....LMAO

This is true but you shouldn't have to 100% relies on your wheelie bars they should really only be a just in case type device.
Nicky Cowboy adjusting the 4 link would help, lowering the launch rpm by 500 also
