Iowa is one of the heaviest albums out there. A lot of bands try to be heavy but the angst and the anger come from an imagined place. Iowa is so intense and crushing due to the mental place the band members were at during the recording. All other albums pale in comparison.

Which bands try to be heavy that imagine a messed up place? You’re saying slipknot is the only band that had a tough period.
It's also why they'll never make anything heavier. Even if WANYK was pretty intense, it didn't have that unrefined, raw sound Iowa had. That kind of natural intensity can simply not be replicated, but it also doesn't mean their later albums don't hold value on their own
yall got any albums similar to iowa? Albums that are just raw anger or raw dark emotions, and not "try to add as much shock value as possible". Love those albums as well but iowa hits different

The whole record is an insane war.
You can smell the anger while you listen to it.
Iowa is my all-time favorite album. I empathized with the anger and aggression when I was younger and now I have a deep appreciation of the "chemically-unbalanced" nature that Corey described. These guys created brutal violent art from pure chaos and drug-fueled madness. It's beautiful. 🤘🏻
Iowa was an album that straight up kicked my energy into overdrive before playing in my high school football games.
I appreciate Corey being honest in this interview.
Iowa is what got me “hooked”. Ironic.
I went to Ozzfest 2001 Toronto, Canada and I remember them playing a few new songs, just weeks before Iowa was released. The crowd wasn't sure how to react to them because it was our first time hearing them. But now, man, I wish it wasn't the first time hearing them because those songs were People=Sh*t, Disasterpiece, New Abortion.

You might see, talk, live under the same roof as people steady in your life but it doesn't mean you're all on the same journey, thinking the same shit. I just saw them in Cleveland, and they put on amazing show. I was always a fan of the band, but never saw them live. Definitely will see them again.

Vol.3 is like the sweet spot between their earlier and later work, a much greater variation of expression than the early stuff and still full of that original slipknot soul unlike their later stuff (if’nye ask me) and ofcourse many would disagree but I’d say slipknot’s contribution to the metal genre is unique and powerful enough to merit a spot high up in the rankings of the greats. After ofcourse all the super greats lol
@@jakemertz2660 I agree. I think people hate on Vol. 3 because it has a lot more melody and their most famous songs are off of that album. But I wouldn’t say they sold out because you can still definitely tell that it’s slipknot. I love all of Iowa I also love duality. Because I love music 🤷♂️
Hands down my favorite metal album of all time. I could go listen to the heaviest of the heaviest shit out there, and it still doesn’t touch Iowa. The rawest album ever recorded. Just pure hatred and angst. It’s palpable. Beautifully disgusting. Corey’s screams come from a different place than any other metal vocalist. The beauty is, his voice has returned to that place.

@@randelmatt It’s uniqueness rivals Iowa in my opinion, but to me, no quite as heavy. Or at least heavy in a different way. Maybe because the production is so great on it, it lacks the grit that Iowa has.
@@randelmatt BROOOOOOO! Puritanical is hands down my favorite Dimmu album. I have been listening to the remaster nonstop since they put it out. You’re right, that album is fucking special. I don’t necessarily think it NEEDED a remaster, because there’s such a charm to the original product. But now that it exists, the clarity really brings something else out of those songs. They really are QUALITY.
It was definitely an exciting time being a Slipknot fan during the Iowa era. We were treated to some good times back then.

Well here’s the thing, Self title is a fucking masterpiece. Iowa is a masterpiece too. Same with vol.3. But all of their albums imo are fucking amazing. But I’ve found that there are bands just as good too. Like mudvaynes fucking insane too.

Imagine the dark state of the heart and mind when they did this I remember being an angry kid and when their came out 15 years old it spoke to every inch of my soul al that pain I had this was it in a piece of music
I haven't even made it 100% through Iowa yet the first few songs make my soul drown.
Awwww...ya gotta...that's THE slipknot album. I remember how disappointed I was when volume 3 came out and it was just...not as heavy and not as good and i stopped listening to them before the next one came out and wasnt really interested in anything they did until recently when they started making slightly heavier shit again..you need to listen to iowa.
Left Behind is one of their better songs later in the album 👍👍👍

Agree.. But the real slipknot died after Iowa... Look at vol3, Corey was whining at that time that he wanted to sing more than scream and did a very poor job on vol 3 with his screams
@@Madzguy007 actually I dig in vol.3, the melodies and lyrics give slipknot more dimension, yes he change his scream to more high pitch rather than mid low growl, but still very brutal if you ask me. the deal breaker for me is grey chapter, they put more focus on mask than music,they became the thing they hate in self titled

Learned how to GROWL listening to The Track Iowa ironically. I was just feeling it one day . And towards the end when Corey starts going off at the end .I just started GROWLING / FRY SCREAMING AND I WAS LIKE FUCK . CHIMAIRA HELPED too

I could tell. Iowa is dark and beats you over the head relentlessly and is not nearly as dynamic or fun to listen to as their other records. I know Iowa is held in high esteem, and it is a good record, but it fell short of what I expected. The band did what I hoped it wouldn't do. Luckily they found themselves again on their subsequent releases.
I wasn't a huge fan of it at first. It all sounded kind of same-y. But then life happened and I started to identify with a lot of the lyrics. I love it now.
Thats because you havent been in that spot of life, when you are full of anger,rage, dissapointment,stress, depression etc, all of that mixed together at the same time... thats when you get to understand, identify and appreciate all the songs in IOWA...

Loved the 1st album and Vol 3 but never really warmed to Iowa it had some good tracks but maybe I don't know if the band were in a better headspace maybe it woulda been a better album...Vol 3 though such a good album so many cool tracks.
