  • A tough decision which will result in a significant financial loss, but we don't really have any affordable choice. Eventually we are underway upstream the Hudson River. Jamie does some testing with the watermaker in the river....before receiving some very upsetting news.

    ABOUT US:
    Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.
    Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing".

    Not sure if I had an unusual experience but we use Tow Boat US. We had that happen in our Grand Banks. We called Towboat, they gave us the number of a diver, brought him out for nothing and we paid the diver $250. That was high but cheaper than losing chain and anchor.

    • @SailingLifeonJupiter
      @SailingLifeonJupiter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Was that in NYC Skip? … that woulda been a nice option…. Did they discount the diver because of your insurance?

      @skipmaggard5039 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SailingLifeonJupiter not NY, we were in New Orleans area. We negotiated with the diver. We were a little flexible on time. I’m not sure if BoatUS gave us a break, we pay them annually for towing and had not used them for years, so they may have thrown us a bone. Are you a member of BoatUS, if not it would have been much more expensive.

    Interesting episode. First, I would have dove that chain. I was a navy diver for 12 years and I have dove on much worse...just make sure you can ditch your BC if you need to. I usually tie a line to the shank of my anchor with a float at the end. That way, I can go get the anchor back if I have to sacrifice some chain. Anchors are really expensive for good ones.
    Second, there is a product called iso-heat that takes water out of fuel. It works really well. The Navy has been using it for years in small boats and RIBs.
    Third, you should have had an oil/fuel-absorbing mat under that fuel tank and bucket. They are cheap in any marine store or online catalog. I carry a case of them on my boat to line the bilges under my engines (catching drops of oil if some leaks out) and when I refuel at the fuel dock. Go back and watch the video again...Quite a bit of fuel splashed onto your deck and probably right into the water when you were poring into the funnels. Very small amounts of fuel contaminate large amounts of water...and let's face it, you are a guest in this country so leave it better than you found it. Something to keep in mind if the situation arises again in the future. Not meaning to sound like a jerk, but spilling fuel into the water when it could be avoided is a pet peeve of mine.
    Thanks for making the videos.

    It is just an anchor and some chain! You have yet to experience the pain and suffering of what ALL can be lost and left behind or stolen from your boat. Not saying any of it is not costly or pain-free but, time to toughen up and not cry over the spilled chain. What would bring tears to my eyes is the cost of diesel fuel with the mast down and motoring the next 3-4 months considering the price of diesel in current market conditions.

    When you buy a new chain. To extend its Life I change ends that the anchor is attached too every 6 months. That way you wear out both ends rather than just one end. With rising the chain and anchor with fresh water after use and having a sacrificeal anode attached to the anchor or 1st link. Your chain will last longer.

    I have traveled all over SE Asia over the past 13 years and yes online banking[I include ATM withdrawals in that] can be a CAT 5 clusterfuck. I learned the hard way that enough cash [USD] can solve any problem anywhere in the world. People often say I am nuts to carry so much cash on me. Most of these comments come from the cruise ship crowd. I feel for you both. It`s one of the most helpless feelings there is when traveling so far from home. I'm Monday morning quarter backing 6 months late, but for the money I think I would've re-anchored on the spare and rode to give retrieval via tender a shot. If that didn't work, slip some rode to the chain where you cut it to give even more options for untangling via tender.

    Bugger about the anchor. Makes me wonder if it is a good idea to use the spare anchor in murky rivers that could be full of rubbish. Although it looked like the river flow was pretty strong, maybe the rRockna was safest. Bugger also about the bank, I guess the plan for anyone travelling by boat would be to have multiple bank accounts. Perhaps a joint account with a trusted family member back home. Anyway could be a lot worse, you're free and sailing on a fantastic catamaran exploring a part of the world most people will never see.

    An expensive leason. You may consider when your anchoring in areas that could possibly have debris to tie a rope to the front of your anchor so it lifts from the front. At the other end of the rope attach a buoy. From your depth sounder you'll no how much rope allowing for tide. This will stop the anchor from digging in. It will also tell you were your anchor is.

    I can feel your pain brother. HSBC Hong Kong is the worst bank on earth. They still operate 100% analogue and on traditional mail + fax. Signature mismatch is their “signature” move with any customer not physically standing in front of their counter.
    The fact that phone numbers or passport numbers change over time … ?? Absolutely beyond comprehension of the person/committee who wrote their operating manuals.
    WORST BANK EVER! You might have to go to HKG (5 days quarantine on arrival) and close that account for good. They will never ever get it in this lifetime.

      Okay. My comments were to harsh and i apologise!
      The reason i became so uptight is this. I live in thailand, i know many people, some are friends who i help in the limited capacity that i can. If they had the price of just one shackle you may need to connect your spare anchor to your remaining chain in their pocket they would feel rich for a few days even though ultimately they have nothing and virtually no chance of improving their situation. Born to be poor. Now take the value of your lost chain and anchor and compare it to the value of your cat. Percentage wise it is absolutely insignificant! You are very privaleged.
      Everyone in the civilised world is having problems with banking systems, me included, i do not feel the need to air it to the world, i just deal with it.
      With all that said i have been watching your channel for a long time and do enjoy it.
      Take care and safe travels.

      @@sandymackenzie8413 "Born to be poor", but you have the ability to become rich. Sure, it may be harder in your location, but people do it. And wealth is relative to your location. I bet food is cheap where you are. Also wealth is not happiness, being poor gives you perspective. You probably value things more. Someone born into wealth often lacks appreciation.

I use to travel to S. America and never had a problem using the Paypall debit card ect......
