after i saw this video my husband applied for a job in japan and i immediately started the rabies bloodwork and process and by the time we got the job and moved it was a 181 days after so it worked out perfectly!
When you're like, "It's a cat," I right away understood. If that was me I would take of my sweater and wrap my cat in it before doing anything crazy like holding her in an airport. She would claw me to bits if I didn't. Even people who haven't owned a cat would probably understand right away that you just don't hold cats in loud environments.
Awww poor Spudgy on the plane! Speaking of pet culture in Korea, there has been more shows on TV about pets and animal welfare, but still in all countryside areas even the concept of pets can be strange to people and still dogs spend their whole (short) lives chained up. But I am glad to see more education on TV about animals and seeing animal welfare people going to countryside areas on these TV shows and rescuing animals and trying to educate people.
What's this: a TL;DR?! We recently brought our pets to Japan. We'll tell you all that we went through, the quarantine, the tests, and hopefully give you tips on travelling with pets!
+Simon and Martina Is the closet requirement a Korea or Japan thing? I've been on planes with animals in the US and they just had to be in their carriers under the seats for takeoff and landing.
+That Veggie Chick Cats actually aren't difficult to control, they're just really hard to calm down. ^^;; *looks down at scars on arm* Mine kinda saw red and uh, well, attacked my arm and hand. Ah well. I forgive easily. ^-^
***** I stopped a cat fight, so I guess being the peacemaker has its price. ^^;; So long as no one else got hurt, I don't mind getting hurt myself. She gave me a few long scratches, though they looked to be worse than they were, and a few bite holes in my hand. My cat bit through the skin to the cartilage, but it's fine now. :) There's just a bunch of scars.
***** I washed it seconds after I broke up the fight, so I don't think enough bacteria got into it to cause that much swelling. It was at a minimum, and went down after about a week. So it was fine. It was mainly just sore and hard to move without taking the bandages off. ^^;; Resulting in me taking them off after only a few days. I didn't punish her or anything, as she didn't mean to hurt me (she stopped when she realized it was me and started licking in apology), just kept her in my room for a few days so it could all blow over between the two. Laughing it off and keeping your mind off it seems to help it heal I guess and plus, less pain. ^^
AnimeMangaOtakuAkG I think the control factor is up to the individual cat. My chubby Siamese? She's pretty chill. She wouldn't like the airport but wouldn't actively try to maim me. My youngest? I would be limping away sans multiple appendages and my pride.
That Veggie Chick The same applies to the youngest of the 3 here. ^^;; She can fight and tends to be aggressive in fights (she's a Himalayan), but stops when it's me who's hurt. The oldest is a lazy potato of a lapcat (black & white tuxedo cat) that is the easiest-to-please cat on the planet - love and food, and she's happy. xD The Siamese, which is the middle between the other two, complains a lot but never swats at us, and she LIVES for food. :)
My cat howls bloody murder whenever we take him more than 60 feet from our apartment door. This makes traveling with him...interesting, to say the least. He's been like that ever since we took him to the vet to get him neutered. That was back in 2000.

Going to Hawaii, USA, also has strict rules on bringing animals. My parents were thinking of moving there, but when they heard that they had to put the dog in quarantine for 3 months, they backed out immediately.
Your reenactment of Meemers freaking out at the airport was totally spot on! If my cat is sleeping on my lap and I have to reposition my leg, she whips her head up and almost leaps off the couch to get away from me. Being a cat owner is hard work, but totally worth it!

I live in America, and despite the fact the the "pet culture" is very real here, I know PLENTY of people who wouldn't be bothered to take their animals with them. Obviously, it was a huge ordeal, and probably very stressful at times, but your animals really appreciate it! I'm happy that Spudgy and Meemers have such good parents!
Oh goodness Spudgey is just too precious. Seeing him definitely makes me understand why my pup is so docile. He's a Shih Tzu Pekingese mix, so we were worried he would be rather aggressive (as Shih Tzu's can be) but nope, he's literally just a little snuggly ball of fluff. Must be the Pekingese in him.

I believe you mentioned before that you wouldn't be able to use bathhouses and so on with tattoos because they're linked to organized crime. Do they affect your lives in any other ways because it seems like everyone you've encountered has been so kind and nonjudgmental about them!
When I was flying from Salt Lake City, Utah to Houston, TX I had to take my two frightened Siamese kittens out of their carrier for the security check too. :( Two people even asked to pet them even though my kitties were clearly freaking out. -_- Luckily, like Spudgey and Meemers, they got through it alright in the end. ^_^

Mrs. LeZarde raised an interesting question: Why didn't you just send the blood samples to Japan? Since it's their rules, they should have the gold standard in testing for the rabies antibodies, right?
I've traveled with my cat (pictured) all over the world. Japan is one of the most difficult countries. Any island which wants to stay rabies free will give you a hard time. But I'm glad you made it! Btw, the US has absolutely no requirements for bringing cats into the country (though for dogs you have to go through paperwork).

I've flown in the US with my cat before and they make you take your pets out of the carrier to test their paws. I'm so incredibly glad that my cat travels really well.

I was getting stressed as you were telling the story. Poor kitty and puppy. What must have been going through their little heads has all that was going on. My husband and I are in the middle of a move and our dog has been stressing out getting sick and having accidents and we've only just begun to back. I'm glad that our move is just a city over and we don't have to take a flight or a real long road trip. I don't think my 13 year old dog could handle that. At least Meemers and Spudgy were able to go into an already unpacked and lived in house that smelled like you guys. I'm sure that made thing so much easier.

I went through the same thing coming to Hawaii with my pup ....I was told Hawaii Japan and Australia are rabies free and all have to do this long process with pets, but well worth it when you're reunited with your fur babies so glad they are home

So glad you guys shared this video, it would help many people. I had to bring my cat from china to usa and it was a hassle. Thank goodness going to usa isn't as strict as japan. But definitely needed to prepare all the documents early but some documents had to be prepared within 10d of flight. Then booking the airplane ticket and having the cat on the plane for 14 hrs (total 24 hrs trip)...that is with a more relaxed country. oh the things we do for our pets. I don't regret it one bit. :)
Martina I love those cat ears! I saw Katy Perry wearing a similar pair the other day. Also, you both are great pet parents. I can't imagine everything you've had to go through in getting your fur babies to Japan. So glad they are home with you and you can snuggle them all the time!
Although I'm sure the whole process is extremely important, it sounds a little scary and tedious. The amount of work and money to bring an animal in to Japan sounds almost monumental in a way. But the fact you guys did it amazes me while showing just how much your pets are loved! Good job sticking it through!

I've traveled with my cat (pictured) all over the world. Japan is one of the most difficult countries. Any island which wants to stay rabies free will give you a hard time. But I'm glad you made it! Btw, the US has absolutely no requirements for bringing cats into the country (though for dogs you have to go through paperwork).

Those are all different countries, Russia is just big.

I've flown in the US with my cat before and they make you take your pets out of the carrier to test their paws. I'm so incredibly glad that my cat travels really well.

I actually started the process about a year ago, but due to various reasons still don't have my cat in Japan with me.
Part of it is just being scared that something unforeseen will go wrong and he'll end up in quarantine, so I'm so glad to see and hear the two of you actually get through, and now I can study what you did and make sure things work out for me too.

I was getting stressed as you were telling the story. Poor kitty and puppy. What must have been going through their little heads has all that was going on. My husband and I are in the middle of a move and our dog has been stressing out getting sick and having accidents and we've only just begun to back. I'm glad that our move is just a city over and we don't have to take a flight or a real long road trip. I don't think my 13 year old dog could handle that. At least Meemers and Spudgy were able to go into an already unpacked and lived in house that smelled like you guys. I'm sure that made thing so much easier.
It sounds really frustrating for the humans, but the little Spudgy and Meemers must have been terrified! They are so brave.

I went through the same thing coming to Hawaii with my pup ....I was told Hawaii Japan and Australia are rabies free and all have to do this long process with pets, but well worth it when you're reunited with your fur babies so glad they are home

So glad you guys shared this video, it would help many people. I had to bring my cat from china to usa and it was a hassle. Thank goodness going to usa isn't as strict as japan. But definitely needed to prepare all the documents early but some documents had to be prepared within 10d of flight. Then booking the airplane ticket and having the cat on the plane for 14 hrs (total 24 hrs trip)...that is with a more relaxed country. oh the things we do for our pets. I don't regret it one bit. :)
moral of the story : dont fly to japan with pets
Martina I love those cat ears! I saw Katy Perry wearing a similar pair the other day. Also, you both are great pet parents. I can't imagine everything you've had to go through in getting your fur babies to Japan. So glad they are home with you and you can snuggle them all the time!
The way you guys tell the story and reenact it with comments, is hilarious! But the actual situation must have been 100x worse.
Although I'm sure the whole process is extremely important, it sounds a little scary and tedious. The amount of work and money to bring an animal in to Japan sounds almost monumental in a way. But the fact you guys did it amazes me while showing just how much your pets are loved! Good job sticking it through!
