They were a great little motor. The 9.9 was even better.

That’s a great little outboard looks like brand new. I bet if you put some time on it the compression will come back as soon as the rings wear back in. I bet it’s still got plenty of cross hatching that’s original. I got a 9.9 1971 this fall it’s suffered from outboard abuse so I’ll be getting it going soon no heat in the garage and outboards laying all over the place.

Nice motor good work. Looks like water pump might need new impeller as water flow seemed intermittent. Possibly some magic mystery oil to restore compression. Good luck with it. Safe boating!

Hello from sweden, just bought my first boat, and I got this engine with it. Mine is newer. It’s from 68 ;)

9.5 is known to run at lower compression.

Excellent video yet again! Interesting anomaly tried to add your channel to my "featured channels" under customize channel....put in "Make It Better" and a gazillion other channel show up , but not yours :( You do a spectacular job in my humble opinion. I have a 4hp long shaft I'm building into a "get it home" motor to obsolete paddles on the "experimental" for fun motors.

Believe it or not these motors will still run good on low compression especially the 9.5. Not as much power but still run great. I’ve had many of them running at 60+ with a new set of points coils and a carb rebuild. Also if definitely replace the impeller for the water pump. Good luck !

Great video. We're about to buy one of these. :)
Whoever jammed these sparkplugs in is an idiot...no need to torque the hell out of them.

🌴 well I just bought a motor today, the guy I bought from said it was a 9.9 johnson , but the motor is blue and the cowl is white with Johnson decals ,I don’t know if some one put a Johnson cowl on it or what , he said it ran when he used it but it sat for 2 yrs ( don’t know if He ran the gas out be for putting it away or if it sat with gas in it ) , the engine seems pretty clean for a 50 year old motor I’m thinking it’s around that age , do you know how to find out what year it is on serial numbers ? It says it’s a model # 9622A 🤔

Johnson and Evinrude are the same company. They merged in 1929. Your model # says it’s a 1966 Evinrude 9.5 Sportwin.

This compression is ok for such old outboard, as it was made for 76 octane fuel to avoid knocking. You should advance the timing to safely run it on higher octane gas.

Hello from Norway. I think 65psi compression is normal.

    Hallo from Germany!
Is there a basic setting for the carburetor? 👋

You could check the manual, but I normally start at 1-1/2 turns out.

Eu comprei um motor desse recentemente e fiquei muito desapontado com a potência, apesar de o motor não falhar mesmo tendo mais de 40 de idade,, fiquei frustrado com o desempenho na água.
