G'day from Australia. Recently returned to boating after a 16 year break via a 5m 1974 runabout with this outboard. Thanks to your easy to follow video I am confident that I too will have this outboard back on the water. So big thanks.
You have no idea how long I have been waiting for a series of videos like this on Evinrudes!! I have a '73 65hp (very similar) that I have been restoring and I've taken multiple pointers from these videos to get me back in the right direction! Keep making these bro they are really good and hope she works well on the water:)
Your videos have been great. Loved how u showed each step the way th out did. Always wanted to watch someone break down these outboard motors. You were very knowledgeable on how to check each step to get it to run. Amazed how you brought back an OLD DESERTED MOTOR LIKE THAT EVINRUDE. BACK TOO RUNNING LIFE! I remember when Evinrude an Johnson came out with these 3 in line cylinder motors. With the prop hub exhaust. The 55 hp. Thank you! Again ! Enjoyed in Va.
check the upper exhaust seal. i say that because as the t stat opens, you should see water coming out of the upper exhaust relief holes. If not, the exhaust will get really hot as no "wall of water" is cooling it. another possibility is the t stat is stuck closed, but you never mentioned cyl head temp so who knows. you want it 125-152.5 degrees at the top of the head. cheers nice score!
Good old motors. I have 4 of them, 0ne 1973 65hp evnrude and 0ne 1981 75hp evinrude. I have Rebuilt one of the 70hp evinrude all new every thing. Good little light weight engines for pontoons to small bass boats. Good power and good fuel economy. Good luck with your project.
Thanks for your video ,I am inspired to do the same ,I also have an 70 hp but was not sure To get started ,but looks like you showed me the way, ¡ thanks
Hello, nice video! I'm stuggling with a very similar engine, mine is a 1978 70 hp, and I want to install a carbs kit but dont have a idea how to do, have you work on yours?
Hello fella nice repair on cheap buy, maybe you can help me figure out my issue just picked up a 98 johnson 40 for 300.00 has 120 both cylinders. So i sorta heard it spin n run.but fella never gave the controller or key switch i ordered a new switch but hoping you can help with wiring mess,it has ieght wires to engine harness a gray a tan/brown a black, yellow stripe a yellow, red stripe a black solid a thick red solid a purple solid a purple, white stripe spun together.any ideas what they operate or how to set-up?snookie pa.
@@MakeItBetter1 yeah that’s what I did, but the bushing was incredibly difficult to install, barely got it in, was is difficult for you as well or did it seat smoothly?
Update: got er to start on carb cleaner. Got it to run on gas. Lower unit is off to check impeller housing and if moon key. Buying parts now! Will be a great motor. Looking back is there anything preventative you think should be replaced even if working?
@@MakeItBetter1 Thanks! Was on the fence about thermostat. At least it is easy to access. Might give the bolts a squirt and wiggle and see it the motor wants a new t-stat.
At 17.45 what did you adjust?? Mine is smoking so much & shuts off when I put it in gear. Can you adjust the carburetor? I cleaned all 3 on mine. Thanks for your help
I was using the threaded adjustment wheel that is on the end of each cable. These carburetors don't have any mixture screws, but some of the linkages can be adjusted to make sure that the butterfly valves open and close all the way.
I won't be water testing it until spring. I ran one of these on my old jon boat and it was one of the most dependable motors I've owned. Every motor is unique, but I personally have had great luck with these!
Ingenious method of lubricating cables!
Can't beat old school outboards, I have a 1982 115 Evinrude restored.

Glad to hear you're getting back on the water! And that this video helps

These old Evinrudes are great and run forever! I'm glad the videos help, I have a few more projects coming soon.

I have a '72 Johnson 65hp. It is very similar except for the electric shift on mine. $2 is a heckofa deal! Great motor. Thanks for the videos.
realy great channel, the how too on both my older evinrude 60 & 70.
Great job.
The best money can buy 👌
Love your channel BTY and really have had a lot of fun with those triples :) Thank you for putting these videos together :)

Hello, nice video!
I'm stuggling with a very similar engine, mine is a 1978 70 hp, and I want to install a carbs kit but dont have a idea how to do, have you work on yours?
Where did you order your parts? I have a 79 70hp I need a few things for.
Crowley marine is a good spot. Probably the best diagram/part system I've come across.
How about the charging system?

Same yr dad old 70 hp Johnson no trim it broke
How did you install that joint kit at 13:05? I had a huge amount of trouble getting my joint in, and it broke
It's easier if you put the bushing in place before the linkage
@@MakeItBetter1 yeah that’s what I did, but the bushing was incredibly difficult to install, barely got it in, was is difficult for you as well or did it seat smoothly?
It took a bit of force; definitely did not slide right in
Just got this same motor. Boat and motor were free from neighbor! Your vids will be a weath of information. Ty × 1000

Awesome! Impeller and lower unit oil are a must. And since these don't have a telltale, I would go ahead and change the thermostat for peace of mind.

Pb blaster is our best friend!
Our friend Pb got it out! Everything is good on motor! Pulling the trigger on buying parts. 😀👍👍
Great! What auction sites do you like to use?
Where did you order your parts from?
Than you!
I get most parts from marineengine.com, ebay.com and amazon.com

So this motor doesn`t have a Pee Hole my Brother Inlaw has the same motor in 1977 Enjoyed it
That is the only thing I don't like about this model. But they run great!
How did it do in the water. I'm supposed to buy the exact same engine in a couple of days.is it a good engine?
I won't be water testing it until spring. I ran one of these on my old jon boat and it was one of the most dependable motors I've owned. Every motor is unique, but I personally have had great luck with these!
@@MakeItBetter1 ok good I plan to buy this engine with controls for$1750
No parts 😊
Where you from, how can we be friends?
👍🇺🇦Super!
Showwwwww
Why didn’t you do both cables at same time, drrr
