  • Are you always searching for the right word? Today, we offer our best tips on how to improve your vocabulary. When you grow your vocabulary, it has a positive effect on ALL areas of communication - whether you are speaking or writing formally or informally. Being able to accurately describe your thoughts is an essential component of exchanging ideas with anyone.
If you need to build vocab in a hurry (for the SAT or GRE, for example), try our hints to increase your vocabulary in a directed way. Start by reading - both your current textbooks, as well as other books and articles that interest you. Pay special attention to words you don't recognize. Seize those words and make them yours! Underline them, look them up in a dictionary and thesaurus, and if you still have trouble remembering them, make flashcards. We have another video with advice on how to best use flashcards here:

Don’t forget to check out our FREE educational apps on the Google Play Store. We have two word games featured in this video:
Words Words Words, and Words of Distinction.

(chuckling) Minimal interruption these days with a simple...
    "Hey Siri."
    "uh-huh"
    "Define someword"
But yes... Totally encourage the underlining approach, even with Siri, for immediacy, and later going back to footnote underlined words.

This is dangerous. When in High-school ( a little more than 60 years ago) I used to read dictionaries. That resultet in that my language teacher accused me at creating because I should not know alle these words I used at my age. At that time we also had Latin as volountary Subject, that can be highly recommended. In my country we normally learn 3-4 language anyway so what is one more?

Vocabulary.com is also a GREAT way to expand your vocabulary. It combines dictionary, etymology, and thesaurus into a game system to track which words you're willing to learn and which words you currently struggle with. It's also available as a mobile app, though not free (but cheap and it is one-time purchase).

When I was a junior in high school I had this English teacher who was fresh out of teaching college. He was very interesting and one of the things he did was give us a better vocabulary. How he did this was that every day he would have 2 new words on the board that we would have to look up the definition and use properly. By the end of the year we were given a standardized test. I found that I had the vocabulary of the average college sophomore.

I've been learning English for 7 months from scratch and what I've realized while learning is that the most difficult part I always struggle with is vocabulary. Honestly, I'm desperate. I don't know what to do in order to improve, enhance a range of words. My room is just literally labeled with English related stuff. Though, it doesn't seem to help a lot. I've been thinking about using these proverbial flash cards for a while... And now I'm gonna give it a try. But, probably, the main reason for my failures is that I'm just not cut out for languages. The dot.
