English is my second language. For a romance-derived language speaker, e.g., Spanish, these words are rather easy because they come from Latin, and already exist and are used in Spanish, Portuguese, etc. For example, meticulous is meticuloso, arduous is arduo, pensive comes from pensante or pensador, austere is austero, capricious is caprichoso, defamatory is defamador, nascent comes from nacer (to be born), etc. The challenge however, is to pronounce them correctly in English, especially for a foreigner,

@Limon Cello There are other countries in America??? Just joking. Yes, it's pompous for us to name ourselves after two entire continents, but much of the world humors us

Glad you enjoyed the lesson and found it useful. I hope you learned some new vocabulary. And I really appreciate you supporting the channel. It means the world to me. 🙏
As French students we spend years learning English just to realize advanced English is actually French 😅 (facetious -> facétieux, arduous -> ardu, presumptuous -> présomptueux, austere -> austère, capricious -> capricieux....)
as a native english speaker, i can certainly attest that learning french improved my english vocabulary a non-insignificant amount. i guess that's what happens when your native language contains a millennium old class war....

I just finished watching your vocabulary lesson about nouns. The more I learn the more I feel I am a dilettante and far from reaching my zenith in English. Though you might give me some credence to my study I know there are still a myriad of English words and expressions out there for me to explore. You are the epitome of the interactive English teaching. As some quid pro quo to your conscientious teaching I'd like to write a plain comment on each of your lessons using some of the words in that lesson. I am hoping this would be mutually beneficial to both of us regardless the dichotomy between teaching and learning.
For the last ten years, I have been working with her. She is always present at her workplace on time and has good relationships with others. She is conscientious.
They say vocabulary helps us expand reality or something like that. You started off with two words that just made me think of how cumbersome work is, and how arduous it is learning words that make me think of difficult tasks.
Nouns: 1. quid pro quo - something given/taken in exchange for something else 2. catch-22 - a problem that cannot be solved because the solution to the problem is inherent in the problem itself E.g.: "It's a catch-22" 3. epitome - something typical that represents a group as a whole 4. dichotomy between (two things) - the contrast between two things that are opposed E.g.: We're studying the dichotomy between economic development and environmental protection 5. myriad - a great number of people or things (= various) 6. credence - the belief as to the truth of something E.g.: The email they discovered gave credence to his unethical behavior 7. malaise - a vague feeling of physical discomfort or uneasiness as an early sign of an illness 8. sycophant - a person who tries to gain attention by flattering wealthy or influential people 9. dilettante - a person who cultivates an interest in something without learning in-depth information 10. zenith - the top; peak; highest point of something

English has words with similar meaning from two main sources. From Germanic sources via the Anglo-Saxon and from Latin via Norman French. I had a professor that when teaching English vocabulary to Spanish speaking students found that they had difficulty learning the short “easy” English words but were able to almost immediately learn the long more complex words . After some time she found out that these long complex words came from Latin and they were cognates to Spanish words since Spanish came from Latin as French did.
so i'm currently preparing for my college entrance and I have less than 10 days left to strengthen my vocabulary. I find this video very helpful as the way you explain the words is comforting to listen. Thank you teacher.
I am from Italy and it is amazing how the more English goes formal the more it sounds like Latin languages. For a native of Italian like me it is much easier to remember this kind of words!
These words aren’t commonly used. Maybe if you were writing a paper. Or maybe one or two occasionally. But in regular conversation, I do not hear them.
I found this channel accidentally when I was browsing for a way to learn more vocabularies, after listening a few times, I realized that the teacher is an expert at explaining the meaning of the word, and gives very practical example for using the word.

As a native English speaker, I am told my vocabulary is very good and in sampling this, I did not find any word unknown to me. Excellent presentation by the teacher, but a word of caution to the learners: do not expect all native speakers to understand you; some will be relatively uneducated and so not know such high-level words. I find I frequently have to paraphrase because I use a fair amount of advanced vocabulary in my everyday speech. So, in a nutshell, pick appropriate words!
It would actually be unusual to encourage English learners to learn 'high level words' in an effort to sound smarter than the average native speaker. In fact, most of these words are almost never used in daily conversation by any native speaker and I take the whole 'sounding smarter' thing as a way to get clicks. The goal is to sound fluent, not smart. In fact, attempting to use a five-dollar word when a one-dollar word will suffice does not make you sound smarter, only pompous and arrogant, if not also a bit stuffy.
@@twanvanderdonk2504 Yes, I have. A good example would be someone who misreads a comment and assumes they can judge the character of a person from one comment. You might know something about that, perhaps?
@@EssentialEnglishIdioms Yes, of course, my point was that the vocabulary of some native speakers is poor. A foreign speaker with a high level of English would have to put some things in simpler terms to be understood. I like acquiring high level words and do use some, but I also explain what I mean if I appear not to have been understood.

Great video! I'm an English teacher preparing students to take Cambridge Exams. One of the key challenges of the C1 Advanced exam is the time pressure you may feel during the different sections of the exam. To overcome this challenge, it's important to practice time management skills during your exam preparation. One way to do this is to simulate exam conditions as closely as possible during your practice sessions. Set yourself a time limit for each task and try to stick to it strictly. This will help you get used to working under pressure and make it easier for you to manage your time during the actual exam. If you found this helpful, I have more resources on my channel that you might be interested in checking out! Good luck!

Truculent is an interesting one. The word "truculent" in French (written the same, pronounced differently obviously) means quite the opposite. It means funny, joyful, colorful! After reading about it, it does come from the latin "truculentus" meaning "seemingly violent", and it could have that meaning in French too (although it's not the main one)! Very interesting

Native English speaker here. Learners, be advised that some these words are above the vocabulary level of many Americans. Know your audience, and don't be afraid to rely on simpler words. You will never offend an American by speaking plainly
@Limon Cello There are other countries in America???
Just joking. Yes, it's pompous for us to name ourselves after two entire continents, but much of the world humors us
I actually hear 80-90% of them in the business context. It’s not uncommon to hear these words
@Limon Cello America you dummy.
I came across many of these words frequently and i guess I understand what they mean, this video teaches me more clearly what they mean and how to use them
These words aren't above average. No need to dumb it down. That's what they do in public schools.
Thanks!

As French students we spend years learning English just to realize advanced English is actually French 😅 (facetious -> facétieux, arduous -> ardu, presumptuous -> présomptueux, austere -> austère, capricious -> capricieux....)
Very true. So many words have been borrowed from French. 👍

Nouns:
1. quid pro quo - something given/taken in exchange for something else

7. malaise - a vague feeling of physical discomfort or uneasiness as an early sign of an illness

@@InteractiveEng Yes Sir I've been following you for years, but I had to create another account since I'm in a mission in eastern Europe, now during my spare time I will to improve my vocabulary since Portuguese is my native language.ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU 🙏
English has words with similar meaning from two main sources. From Germanic sources via the Anglo-Saxon and from Latin via Norman French. I had a professor that when teaching English vocabulary to Spanish speaking students found that they had difficulty learning the short “easy” English words but were able to almost immediately learn the long more complex words . After some time she found out that these long complex words came from Latin and they were cognates to Spanish words since Spanish came from Latin as French did.
what gets lumped into being called "english" is from like six different languages. latin is only 10℅ of it. geology? greek. cot? arabic.
so i'm currently preparing for my college entrance and I have less than 10 days left to strengthen my vocabulary. I find this video very helpful as the way you explain the words is comforting to listen. Thank you teacher.

Have you heard of the word "arrogant" before?

Good luck!
