Instead of just blindly consuming the story, some people pay attention; and other people, instead of just paying attention, also absorb the context; and when they absorb the context, they understand that there is subtext.

Add to that, the name Cid originated from the spanish word seor, which means 'Lord' or 'Master.'
Cid Kageno (or Kageno Shido) quite literally translates to 'Lord of the Shadows'.

I've seen a number of isekai play with the idea that their protags are are just nerds who have been waiting to play out their power fantasies, but Cid i special in that he is exactly that without being a loser. He is SO FULL OF HIMSELF, but he can ACTUALLY do all the cool things. The joke isn't that he's unprepared for the life he fantasized about, the joke is that he is SO prepared yet he's so into playing his role that he doesn't realize what is actually going on around him.
Cid actually put in the work and passion into it, that's all. Sure, it looks like he was born with exceptional power on top of it, but he still put effort into utilizing the power. ...He's still crazy and amoral, of course. But you gotta admire that drive.
The shadow defies Chunni because surely it's not chunni if you can actually do it?!

@@blueteller He wasn't even born with exceptional power. It's just that he experimented with magic and his own body since he was a toddler. He mastered his abilities and skills to the point that he seems godlike in power in comparison to everyone else. He wasn't given a single speck of his power. The reason he's able to use so much magic isn't because he has more magic than anyone else, but because his use of magic is so incredibly efficient that he can bring down divine punishment with the same amount of magic most people use to strengthen their sword a little.
Also he is intelligent which is why he sees the way people around him react as a game since logically he knows he is nerd and lived in his own world. He is aware he is insane which is why he expects others to live normal lives and just play with him out of gratitude for saving/rising them

This series is kinda like one punch man where cid cant be (or maybe he just dosnt want to) to be everywhere at once so when he is away all the character do go through proper brutal character development, heck even some scenes with cid and people he knows can get pretty deep.

Cid is chūnibyō as fuck, but he absolutely doesn't want to be a "hero." He wants to be exactly what he says he wants to be: The Eminence in Shadow. Not a good guy, nor a bad guy. He wants to be a grimdark edgelord that hides in the shadows and pops out at whatever opportunity makes him look coolest in his warped mind at any given moment. Morality isn't a factor and good and evil are nothing more than a suggestion. The only thing that matters to Cid Kagenō is being *him.*
What matters to Kágeno Minorú is the conversation. He is not a typical chūnibyō. In fact, he is so atypical that you can even call him an antithesis to all chūnibyō. He possesses something that all chūnibyō lack - substance. He has power, he is aware that his dream is a "delusion," and he is overall capable. Something no chūnibyō can boast of. He is the only chūnibyō to survive the chūnibyō phase and graduate.
He is, “The Atomic One.”
@danielantony1882 I'm perturbed by your writing on "Minoru Kageno." Those accents are entirely unnecessary. In fact, you only need an extended "o" when writing "Cid Kagenō." Minoru Kageno requires no modifications.

The anime shows outsider's POV first and thus presents the idea of being an "Eminence in Shadow" as something semi-reasonable and cool... meanwhile, in the manga, we are told from the get-go that the MC is straight up NUTS. He's a sociopathic die-hard chuuni who's biggest dream is becoming a role-player. He's hilariously crazy.
Not to mention, in the Manga, he's built like a brick shithouse. All that physical training made him absolutely _stupid buff,_ like Machio from Dumbbells buff. But he's just sitting there in the back of class with 2 meter wide shoulders running the internal monologue of how perfectly he "blends in as a totally average, normal student that no one would notice."
I love how in the manga in his previous life that he trained so hard that he became so incredibly buff and he keeps on going on about how he wants to stay the mob character with a secret identity of being teh Eminence in Shadow. That imagery is absolutely hilarious because of the disparity of what he WANTS vs what he LOOKS like in the manga.
@@Piemur1 That was creative license on the artist's part, but I do agree it was hilarious and added to the comedy, even if later arcs directly disproved that visual representation lol
Because the person behind the adaptation prefers the darker energy of the light novel and moved this flashback to ep 1 on purpose
@@behindzerosp I've noticed this trend in anime adaptations that they heavily favor the whatever "coolness factor" the story has over the comedy. Which is kind of a shame. The comedy makes it feel more self-aware than pretentious.

Hearing them describe what they want out of this series almost makes it seem like they've already seen it. An isekai power fantasy that takes itself seriously while blending perfectly with humorous satire? The kind of vibe that takes you back to your edgy teenage years?

Enjoyed the reaction and analysis. One of my favorite series of the last five years. In one weird way it reminds me a bit of Symphogear in the way it goes really hard for a particular type of trope while mixing humor and over-the-top drama with great production.
This was a pleasant surprise. I laughed as soon as I saw the thumbnail, I laughed during the reaction, and I laughed at the speculations. This is gonna be good.

16:41 I am sad that the ankme never explains that the MC legit triwned in just about everything in his first life. Boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, firearms, bodybuilding, parkour, all of it. So, when he gets isekai'd, the sonuvabitch is a master at so much.

And he doesn’t even need to be I’d rather have a morally gray character than watch countless unrealistic isekai/shonen characters that come off as Gary stu.
Cid isn't even remotely close to a good person. He's exclusively motivated by money and looking like a badass. The only times that he over goes out of his way to do right by others are for those reasons, or to pay off an interaction that he views as transactional, e.g "You fed me, here's the money that was stolen from you."
He openly revels in the idea of other people becoming evil, and thinks that a terrorist invasion of his school is the coolest shit ever. Not only is he not a good person, he's downright deranged.
Cid Kagenō is pretty much the greatest chūnibyō character ever written and being "good" has nothing whatsoever to do with that.
@@kevinb5417 The point is he isn't actually evil, and leans slightly more to good simply because of the results of his actions, and his personal standard. The example you used, "you fed me, here's the stolen money". If he was evil he wouldn't have a concept of repayment.

Oh my god, it surprised me so much that they get the feel of the series instantly to the point that I have doubts that they saw the series beforehand or had poeple telling them about it.

20:34 His whole schtick is that he wants to become the Eminence in Shadow. Everything he does is in support of that. What exactly that is will be revealed in later episodes. But it's safe to say that what he thinks it means, and what everyone else thinks it means, don't necessarily line up.

Eminence is the only manga that made me laugh with each chapter (mostly to tears and a stomach ache XD), and checking out both anime and manga is not a bad idea, since thers plenty of differences.

this is definitely one of my top isekais it does the power fantasy parody so well! i think the next episode is the one that really solidifies the concept and vibe of the show. that's the downside of the misdirect of the first episode lol. but i understand why they arranged thing this way for the anime. can't wait til you get into the real meat!

I think the subtitle translation to NPC is a bit wrong. He specifically uses an English loan phrase "named character". My interpretation of that is more significant than what people think of about NPC, at least to some extent. His meaning with that phrase as i see it is that she's one of those important named characters compared to un named backround characters. Which also means she gets story development that background no name characters don't. Changing his English phrase to something else is changing the meaning to some extent.
This is peak Isekai. You guys will love this show.

I understood this anime by episode 3.
Cid is a pretty complex character, although most of the time he just does things becouse he thinks it would be cool to do, wich has made a lot of people misscharacterize him as a character who only does things to be cool and doesn't care about anything else.
About time the boys reacted to this, still waiting for them to react to Overlord though.
Somebody mentioned that Caleb apparently finished the first season at some point and didn't like it, so unless it wins a poll there's no chance
