He was the best Leader in Leafs history, and I think NHL history.. Even though he never had any Good Quality Star Players beside him.. He still made the most of it and made everyone around him better. And The Leafs made conference final runs over & over again. But just Imagine if he did have Star Players beside him!! Man, it would of been a totally different story.. The only decent player who was at his level was Mogilny, but he was already passed his prime, and so was Sundin.. So that sucked. I left Sweden for the U.S in 1991.That spring we swedes witnessed the greatest talent that we had produced at that point. He scored a memorable solo winner against Sovjet in the final of the World Championship to win the trophy. Late in the third period, tied 1-1, Sundin picked up the puck behind his own net and flew across the ice, deked everybody, including Fetisov, and scored five hole. There was no question he was gonna be a Hall of Famer already in his teens. The Nordiques chose to aqcuire Forsberg, and the Leafs’ fans didn’t like Wendell Clark’s exit. Sundin was between a rock and a hard place at that point, but how he responded is nothing short of spectacular.

The Islanders fans were disgraceful, but Tavares chose to leave that team, while Sundin never wanted to leave the Leafs. The Leafs office didn't want him. Recall they wanted to trade him at the deadline but he wouldn't have any of it. Sundin bled Leafs blue. Can't really fault him for it. I'd rather have it that way than some punk who wants out. As for Tavares, if people were savvy, they would have realized that he was engaged to a girl from Toronto before he signed there. Not that he couldn't still go back to the Islanders, but he had a lot of personal reasons for wanting to go home to Toronto. How was he supposed to know that there would be a new GM (Lou) and couch (Barry Trotz) who would instantly turn that awful mess into a competitive team overnight? Oh well!

If u wanna talk consistency, Sundin was the epitome of consistent. Of his 18 seasons he had 15+ 70 point seasons. The only times he didn’t were his rookie year, the lockout season in ‘94-95 & his last year. He was one of the best at the dot, always winning close to 55% of the draws & man, you could not get the puck off of Mats, it’s like it was taped to his stick especially behind the net. A great leader through & through, a player who stepped up in big games even tho unfortunately towards the end the leafs didn’t make the playoffs. One of the most respected, underrated & all around players in NHL history. And that shot, no one talks about how lethal & accurate the guy could shoot, always knew you were getting 30-40 a year from him. I wish the leafs still had a player like him/ he could restart his career with Toronto.

His best moment was coming to play for Vancouver and beating the Leafs on National Television, scoring the shootout winning goal against his former team. How Swede it was.

Loved Sundin! One of the leafs greatest captains...never had a legitimate elite winger but still put up outstanding numbers. Leafs haven’t had an amazing captain since

One of the most underrated Leafs of all team. Fantastic skills and fundamentals, embraced the role of captain and franchise player, never complained, consistently produced, gradually got better in playoff performances, and made those around him better players even though he never had any elite wingers to play with. Unfortunately, he never seemed to garner the appreciation and respect he merited. Clark and Gilmour seemed to have a monopoly on that.

The tsn overdrive crew selected doug gilmore over mats sundin for their all time team citing gilmores two incredible seasons as the reason why. Talk about clowning on a heart and soul guy who did everything and more for their franchise. Pure disrespect.

I was never a big fan of his when I was younger because the Leafs had to give up the best captain we've had, Wendel Clark, but as time went on you can't help but love the guy.
