    Turn the middle chisel holder around so when it's open all 3 surfaces are visible. I've recently started to add label on my holders to identify sizes of their contents. They have proven so useful especially on my spanner and sockets sets.

    • @ST-0311
      @ST-0311 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      Disagree. As it is you can open the first leaf to see the second tier of chisels. Open the first two to the left to see the 3rd tier. Turning it around would require the holder to be fully extended to see the second tier.
      However, an alternative is to put Perspex (Plexiglass) on the front and back of the second leaf. Then one could visualize the second tier of chisels regardless of how extended the holder is.

      @teacheme Hi Costa, great to hear from you,. Thank you. You are right. Labels are a smart idea too, really simple. It's a funny one as I am not sure what way round I prefer as I tend to use the ones at the back very little so really just open the front and the second tier are there. But if someone makes this and they use them all a lot then I would go with your suggestion. Thank you.

      @@ST-0311 I have to admit that I missed that and agree with you although I would always open the holder fully as it's seem the thing to do. The answer seems to be perspex on all five visible sides.

    OMG!! 43k Subscribers??? You are still amazing me! Sorry you haven’t heard from me lately. I lost my oldest daughter (39 yrs old) last June. She was my best friend, travel buddy and the family planner/party organizer. The loss absolutely knocked all the wind out of me. Grief kicked me down hard.
    Sorry for over sharing, I just want you to know that I’m still watching and you are still my favorite TH-cam woodworker/entrepreneur (and videographer!) I’ve missed being involved but clearly you are on the fast track! Thanks, Mark! Keep up your great sense of humor and the amazing work!

That about sums it up. It's one of the reasons I started woodworking. A way to find some inner peace. It was not a fix but certainly helped me to arrange my thoughts and emotions. Hi, Mark. A bunch of really great ideas. 👍👍👍
    As I was watching you insert magnets into the wood,
    I remembered, sometimes the CA glue doesn't want to
    hold the magnets, long term (BTDT) and I have an idea.
    Now, to be fair, I just thought of this and have never done it.
    Drill your inset for the magnet, then drill, in the center, for
    a flat head screw, for the magnet to grip, holding itself in
    the hole (still use CA). Now there are two things holding the
    magnet in the hole. The likelihood of it coming out is greatly
    reduced.
    Notes: The larger the screw head, the better but this is also
    dependent on the thickness of the material, because you need
    a few threads, below the screw head, to hold in the wood.
    OH, P.S.: The extra screw length gets cut off at the back of the
    material. 😁✌🖖

      @startmaking1  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Nice set up Mark - great idea with the chisel holder. Just a thought if you want to make your saw holder smaller, you could save 12 /18 mm (thickness of your ply) on each saw holder - if you tapered the top of the side that fits against the saw and then stuck it under the angled bit for the dowel. That would save about 60mm over three saw holders. An idea for version 3. Keep up the ideas!

Another brilliant video. One request, since we've missed it so far this year; we need the rugby jersey for old times sake. A small point, you're using a lot of CA glue, just be careful that you rely on it too much because over time CA becomes brittle and is not really very good for structural parts. In conjunction with wood glue you're golden (noted that you did that in these projects, just a quick reminder). Be careful, you're going to become too efficient. Cheers!

    Another very useful video Mark. I'm not a French cleat user, but your hinged chisel holder is ingenious. I might keep it French cleated to my bench so that all chisels, marking instruments, sanding sticks, etc. were right at hand when needed. I like how you maximize the use of your wall space with the French cleats & your other owner-made accessories. Do you plan to have a lumber storage system using French cleats in the future? If you so choose, you could probably author a book titled, "How to Organize Your Workshop with French Cleats." I don't recall seeing your workbench video, but I'll find it to view.

    • @startmaking1
      @startmaking1  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Bill. Hope you are well. I guess the holder could be screwed straight to the wall if needed. Lumber storage is on my mind at the moment if I am honest. My issue is that the workshop is not heated through the winter so I like to keep my hard wood in the house so it is acclimatised to the temperature it will eventually end up in. And the shop is way too small for a huge amount of wood storage. That said. I may look into an adjustable solution for some timber to be in there and I am planning on building a separate shed for ply sheets as they are a nightmare in a workshop that is barely wider than a full sheet. The workbench video was over 2 parts, one for the build and the other for the accessories, hold downs etc. It, like the workshop ,though is an ever evolving build. Never quite done.

    You don't need the full length of the "ramp" for the "key" to run on. So you could easily have the ramps be 2/3rd to half the length and then go vertical on the rear side of the next vertical. So then you are only really stuck by the width of your handles.

    Ok, just watched your video. Very clever. I’m in the mist of doing shop reorganization. My question to your dowels holding the items in;
    How do you get them out without fighting the job the dowel does, which is keeping the item in place.
    I was hoping to see you remove one item to show how you overcome that problem. Thank you for the close caption, I am hearing impaired and they really help me.
    Side note; I really like your French cleat builds. You take the mystery out of them by doing detailed builds on them.

    • @startmaking1
      @startmaking1  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you mean the saw rack then the dowel has just enough upward movement that as you bring the saw upwards the dowel releases the squeeze and so long as you are moving upwards the saw comes away. Downwards and it grabs again. I am glad you like the videos. I really enjoy ,making these type of ones. Thank you for commenting.

    Hi! Thank you for your video. It is great. But…
    …if you are using magnets anyway so extensively, why not using them on your saws, too? They give you a much smaller footprint.
    And if you want to stick to a friction based grip for the saws, try using your dowel based mechanism upside down with two levers instead of the dowel/ramp solution. Think of your hands when praying. Put some rubber mat where your finger tips are and an axis each where your wrists are. To connect the levers with the axis you can use eyebolts to make it an easy build. You can use two layers/rows of this mechanism above each other with an offset to make the footprint even smaller (so one saw gets stored in the lower rack and the next one in the upper rack and the next one again in the lower rack and so one - if you get my picture). Still I‘d prefere the magnet solution, though…
    If you use magnets to hold/store a tool, rather use the rubber mat to cover the magnet instead of the felt. Usually the tools are made of harder metal than the magnets so they would rather scratch the magnet than vice-versa. But if you still feel the urge to protect the tools from the magnets then keep in mind that the strength of the magnet decreases exponentially (!) with the distance. Also magnets are strongest when the metal objects are pulled away from them. They are much weaker when you slide the objects to the side (So: Provided that the contact surface is the same, it would be much harder for you to pull down the metallic object from a magnet above than from a magnet to its side. But the saw being so thin makes it much more effective to hold it with a magnet to its side that to its top.) So rather use the stickiness of the rubber mat than the smoothness of the felt to compensate for the los of magnetic force due to the further distance that you need to have some space/rubber/felt between magnet and the tool.
    Greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭

      Wow, so much good advice. Thank you. I like the praying idea. I think I have been something similar using rubber bands too. I like the tiered idea too. I may actually need to make a plan and draw it up. Not like me but it could happen.
      In all honesty the covering on the magnets is more for feel than protection of the tools I like the softer touch against the tool. But what great info on the rest. So much good advice. I am so grateful. Thank you.

    Great idea for the chisel till, love how it folds out! Haven't sold me on the 90 degree saw till though, any space you've saved side to side still needs to be bare so you can get the saws at the back in and out. Bit more of a faff getting them in and out that way compared to the old one too.

    • @startmaking1
      @startmaking1  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      YEah, I missed a trick with the saw till. I could have made the one side thinner as it only has smaller saws in it and I think I can save a few more cms and add in another saw each side. Lucky I made it rough so I can have another go. And you are right, it is a little bit of a faff so the saving of space needs to be bigger.

I've had a French cleat wall for around 6 years, but have not made full use of it yet. I've been using those magnetic doofers from Parkside. Really handy for drill bits, as they are always within reach. The saw holder is an excellent idea. I think I'll be copying that one. Thanks for sharing. Btw, where do you get your rare earth magnets? The bench will probably never be complete. Always adjusting it. But do you mean the gaps between the saw and assembly bench, sadly they are so the fence can move back and forth. Or do you mean the ones next to the wing side the one I have the fence cleat on. That gap is because the wing comes off the side and can be made flat to extend the bench.

    Hi Mark. Glad you done this one as I have the same saw holder and need to remake it so great food for thought here. I'm thinking of making the vertical and angled pieces out of the same piece of wood I e. Cut one side of the wood at the 22.5 degree angle. Hopefully this will also save space. Regarding the chisels, would it not make sense to turn around the middle layer so that the clear window is showing forward when opened up? Other than that, I guess I have something new to build next weekend 😂 I think I'll make the chisel holder for 8 videos rather than 9 and then the handles will be offset to each other

    • @startmaking1
      @startmaking1  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The window being turned is a difficult one. I dont really use the back chisels all that often so I chose it this was so I can just open the front page and see the second. But if you use all layers then yes I would say turn it around. I really want to make a wider one but not sure how weight will affect it. Offset handles is really smart. You could save 5mm per tier. Which in effect means one extra tier in 4 if my maths is close. Thats pretty good efficiency. Damn, now I really want to make another. Honestly Im not French cleat obsessed.
