I understand that the Larger x Tool laser is not in everyones budget. Please note that all of these holders can be made with a cheap laser, or by hand, or bought from sellers like www.aglimpseinside.org. He is both a talented content creator and someone who makes amazing French cleat and tool holder accessories. Or you can adapt the original idea.
I see many in the site, which ones do you recommend and what is the type of wood used and it's measure, 3mm, 5mm or more?
The nice thing about French cleats is that you can still hang a section of peg board but it's easy to shift the peg board location if you decide that your organization needs modified.
@@ianbelletti6241 screw pegboards, honestly theyre a PITA. Great for a dozen items, thats it. With falling pegs and being inadequate in every way, I'm giing cleats forever.
@@DOCWHOK9 I was talking about combining methods. If you have some things that are better off hung on pegboard the cleats would allow you to hang the pegboard and keep it much more adjustable with everything else you intend to hang. Yes, pegboard does have it's downfalls but you may find a condition where it's beneficial to you. Using the French cleats takes away the major downside of the normal method of hanging pegboard which happens to be the typical fixed placement forcing you to have to arrange around the peg board.
I just have to ask, why not cut the french cleat as part of the side panels ? Instead of screwing a separate cleat onto the outside of the panel making it wider, and thereby wasting wall space.
Main point I got from this video regarding French cleats. Think in 3-D instead of 2-D. Great job.
Yes, thats it. I am glad that it was not lost in my usual waffle.
@@startmaking1 I took apart the peg-board wall last night to get it ready for the French-cleats. I saw that peg-board wall in a way I never saw it before, flat and a waste of space.
Dude. Love your explanations and creative ideas. Simple, efficient and effective. Putting a cleat on the workbench and just move the box you are using from wall to bench, deserves 2 thumbs up!
Thank you very much. I have just built a new workbench and this one has a French cleat on a t track, very exciting lol.
🤔 The cleat on the bench and the rubbish bin are an excellent idea.
Thanks for sharing. 👍
Thank you Dave. Born out of necessity.
Nicely done. Your super honest, direct delivery style is appreciated. You gave me at least 10 ideas. Thanks!
Thank you Ryan. Very much appreciated,
Thanks!
That is more than kind. Above and beyond. thank you
Best French cleat video I have seen. Two great take aways,
1) Think 3D
2) French Cleat hangers rather than angled battens,
Awesome
Thank you very much. Really appreciated.
"1) Think 3D"
OK. French cleats to hang French cleats to hang a 3rd set of French cleats. 🤣
@@ianbelletti6241 now you are talking.
@@ianbelletti6241 not what I meant, I meant hanging boxes of the French cleats rather than individual tools to save wall space. Obcvious, I know, but I had not thought of it before, I had always considered French cleats as pegboard,. One hole, one tool.
@@tonysicily2687 I know what you meant but still posted the joke. Besides, people do fail to realize that the peg board hangers are often big enough to hang multiples of tools. The only difference between French cleats and peg board is how much you can extend the load off the wall and how much load it can handle per hanger.
I'm getting ready to transform my hobby space with French cleat panels and this video has given me way more ideas than any other video I've watched. Love it!
Thats very kind thank you.
Good stuff. An old uncle of mine in his workshop used to screw the lids of jam jars under the shelf with 2 screws, then he could put screws nails etc in jars easily see what was where, unscrewed them as he needed them and make good use of the space under the shelf. Use this method myself 50 years on.
Love that idea. So simple yet effective.
So glad I saw this before cracking on with French cleating my garage!
I hope it goes well. It is really fun and a bit addictive.
Not my first view of your channel, but I’ve finally subscribed. Why? Your common sense, straightforward approach, as well as your humble presentation style. I like how you didn’t make a fuss about dimensions, math or mandatory use of a table saw (things that many / most other french cleat wall “experts” do). Very reassuring, especially for beginners. I love my french cleat wall. You gave me inspiration for a few needed additions and modifications. Thank you!
Hi G I Jeff. Thank you for Subbing. But more than that, thank you for such a nice comment. Means a lot.
The Marie Kondo of woodworking. Brilliant idea of basing your units on the a glimpse inside bracket for ease. Groupings with tasks and tools is the greatest takeaway👍 Thanks
Wow, thank you. Very much appreciated.
My OCD is good through the weekend, now. Thank you.
You are welcome. I find the fact that most tools have a home to be really calming.
Some terrific ideas presented. I see a need to revise my shop cleat system for increased efficiency. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Thank you for watching . Enjoy the build.
I have watched French cleat videos before, but this is the best one so far. I've picked up so many pointers from this one. Thanks again for sharing.
That is really kind. It is still one of my favourite ones to have made. So much fun.
Bloody excellent presentation. I learned so much and yes, you were the first one I’ve watched and I’m glad I found you. Thanks a million.
Thats really kind bud. Thank you
Brilliant. A house fire in 2023 was apparently natures's way of forcing garage reorganization on me. I lost every woodworking tool, every assessory, every bench, everything. The journey of buying replacements has convinced me to be more organized this time around. The French cleat wasn't new, but the application to wall storage for the workshop was....and this is truly the best video I've seen. Subscribed. No laser. Task number one will be to figure out how to do this affordably. At 78, income is low, and prices are high. However, what I got out of this was the possibility of modularity and expansion. For instance, there is new home building all around me, and large pieces of OSB are everywhere, as well as scrap wood for box construction. I'm on a mission....one step at a time. Thank you.
Firstly I am sorry to hear that you lost all that. I cant even imagine. I love hearing the positive spin on it though. And you dont have to reinvent the wheel here. I used the laser only because I had it,. you can just use the traditional French cleat bracket and build from that. I still do for heavier items. One step at a time. Thats exactly how I do it. Not always in the right order though. Thank you for sharing.
I like your use of the French cleat brackets. They are more efficient than the free standing cabinet & storage shelves I keep down cellar with my power tools. Your new shop building has plenty of room with everything up on the walls. Nice job!
Hi Bill. Yes, it certainly works for my shop. I have to say if space was not an issue like some of the commercial size shops I see, I would not have such an intricate system but for me, although this is a great step up from the shed, I have to be so careful not to overfill the floor and just not be able to work.
That is one cool storage system. My Mrs is always gettin on me about the clutter and I've been thinking about the French cleat style. I will be building one shortly. Thanks for the video. Subbed
Thank you very much. Not only for the comment but for the sub. Very much appreciated.
My Mrs is not allowed in the shop just like I ‘m not allowed in the kitchen. Seems fair! 😅
Great stuff. So many good ideas, and a helpful "don't overthink it" attitude that I needed a reminder of! Thanks!
Thank you so much. I really liked making this one. reminds me I should do another French cleat one.
I can’t even begin to explain how much I learned from watching this 1 video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. My favourite part wasn’t even mentioned, but tea lights for super cheap wax for planes? Genius! So thanks again! 😊
What a lovely comment bud. I massively appreciate it. Thank you.
Wow! Common sense! Making the box and thinking outside of it!
I love the french cleat on the bench idea with all the common things in one place! I did that with a little shelf above my bench, because I have cupboards under it, but I am going to rethink everything now!
It's addictive be careful lol. But thank you, that is very kind.
The cleat on the bench is such a good idea.
Thank you. Simple things I guess.
I’ve tried to attach tools to the ends of my work enc but clumsy me would run into them. I solved this problem by making the the top wider and longer like an overhang. I’m still clumsy but my tools are protected.
every tool needs a home...I heard that years ago and it really made a difference in how I organize, everything
It is the only way I dont go completely nuts in a small workspace.
Best French cleat video yet, thanks!
Thank you. That is very kind.
I'm your newest subscriber. I'm Tony from Utah USA. I do high end finish carpentry. Mostly on churches and temples all around the United States. I have a small, well, not that small ,wood shop. And accessibility to tools is vital to efficiency. Thanks for posting this content.
Hi Tony. Great to have you aboard and thank you for watching. and commenting. I have a feeling that if I saw your small, not small shop I would be more than a little jealous lol.
@@startmaking1 I'm currently remodeling it .
That sounds like expensive fun.
Not any more! I just subbed because this video was brilliant.
This is the best french cleat video I've seen, and I've seen a bunch! Thanks much.
Wow that is very kind. Thank you.
Brilliant and entertaining! 🎉 Thank you for all the great ideas! I’ve been threatening to do a French Cleat system myself and I have a laser that I’ve had for a year and not yet used. No excuses left. You’ve given me reasons to use both!
YEs, thats perfect. If you struggle like I did to actually draw the brackets, I can email you a copy of my file just as a starting point. though it is not hard for anyone who can use sketch based programs.
@@startmaking1 Any chance you could just mention the sizes and dimensions? Are they on your website somewhere? No point reinventing the wheel!
I think it's a 60mm gap between cleats, and 50mm on the long face of the cleat itself, and you're using 18mm backboard.
Great video. Concise and informative. Lots of great ideas here as well as ways to think differently about storage and how to position things to maximum your space. Thanks a bunch.
thank you so much. I really enjoy making these holders. Something cathartic about it.
Incredibly interesting and well constructed video, thank you! I am reconfiguring my small workshop in the New Year and have been considering French Cleating it. I have not seen a better, more instructive and entertaining review of FC use, just brilliant, and so very easy… 👏🏻
Great tips on cutting the FCs themselves and the various holders, not to mention the use of a back board, which I had not previously considered.
Thanks again… 👍🏻
Thats very kind, thank you. I hope your refit goes well.
Brilliant, so simple but tremendously effective. All looks so good too.
Thank you Jim. Much appreciated.
Love the video, Mark. Put a French cleat system in this year, but need to get cracking on more holders, so your video has given me the inspiration to do so. I'll probably stick with the traditional cleats, though. I'm happ with them. Thinking 3D is a great point. One holder I would recommend is a saw holder which holds your saws by friction and dowels. Works a treat.
Thank you James. And we are very much in sync on this. I was planning on the exact design of saw holder but just ran out of time for the video so I plan a follow up if this one gets a few views. The traditional cleats are absolutely fine too, they have held up this well for so long.
Jest watching the video I’m a semi retired 70 year old jointer well a tried to retire 😂 still in the work shop not really a job to me as I’ve enjoyed every single day doing what I love but the new French cleat and your style with your great ideas well deserved cheers for the inspiration look forward to seeing more 🤝thank you Chris Jon
Brilliant. I think that if I did this full time I would feel the same as you do. Thank you.
Love French cleats, million dollar idea. Made many heavy shelves and never has failed
Me too. They are really fun too.
Great idea for the magnets on the rag box.
Thats very kind., Thank you.
Your enthusiasm is is amazing, after watching this it’s french cleats all the way for me. Keep these awesome videos coming.
Thank you kindly. Lovely comment.
Dood! Your teaching skills and entertainment value are by far the best. I opened up 8 different windows on french cleat systems, and you answered every question i had within the first several minutes so I'm closing the other windows down, and subscribing to you. Thanks for your effort!
Wow, thank you very much.
The French cleat system was the way I hung cabinets at my previous job. When they removed that it doubled the install time. Love their function.
Great info. I bet it did. Thank you
I love this video. I never thought about using French cleats... nice compact storage solutions...
Be careful it's an addiction waiting to grab you. So much fun.
Brilliant Mark Nice work as always mate i will be steeling some of those ideas love them all but especially the file and chisel holder im glad u got rid of those horrible and bad use of space magnet strips and your bin idea is the hero iv still got a plastic bag hanging on the side of my work bench on a hook so ill be looking fwrd of building your shop bin idea great work your a legend mate .
hi Robert. Thank you for the kind comment. I was worried the file holder would not hold up but so far so good. And waaaay better than the magnet strip, though they are good if you have the space . But the bin still wins out.
GREAT video!! I now have a weekend project and it is getting my workshop organized with French Cleats! Thanks for this one!
Hi John. That sounds like a good way to spend a weekend.
Great seeing you in larger shop. Great video. Shops are always evolving. Love seeing more of the person reflected in the space. Personalized with other interests sprinkled in.
What a greta comment. Thank you very much.
That’s the second time I’ve missed a notification for a vid…anyway I’m glad as I love the French Cleat system… glue gun holster! Yup, I need. Hey, here is one for you - IKEA do a paper dispenser for children. I discovered I can mount a whole range of tapes… I bet you could design a French Cleat version. I love mine…so useful and allows me to access tape length etc really easily. Thanks for this vid. I just love storage solutions…being creative often means needing a wide range of products easily available, yet well organised. 🌈✨👏🏻✨🌈
Who knows how YT works with notifications and all. I think it is whether YT determines my video to be suitable to everyone or just a few. Maybe it depends on the content . Love the tape French cleat idea. I am slowly putting some more 'clever ' ideas together to make an additional video . Will have to take a look. Thank you.
Just a possible hint that might solve your missing video. Check that the bell icon next to the subscriber button has been tapped so it shows up as black.
All looking good Mark new space really taking shape 👏
Thats kind Mark, thank you
Excellent video Mark. Thanks for all of the ideas. Perfect timing too as I’m currently looking at all my tools lying around the floor of my new shed and wondering what to do about it.
You are welcome. I am so happy to be able to see the floor again
I actually built a french cleat wall in my work trailer. Absolutely love it. Far more compact than shelves, everything has a specific home (so workers mess up myntrailer less 😂), and modular. I can switch it up as needed.
Thats is a fantastic idea.
Great video! Thank you for sharing your viewpoints on french cleats and comparing them to pegboards. I've seen plenty of videos on the topic and your points about utilizing depth and adding efficiencies are very insightful!
Thank you. I really enjoyed making this one. Seems I am a little addicted to it.
I looked at the cost of the pegboard plus the cost of the little holders. Cost increases rapidly. French Cleat seems more versatile.
Excellent video. I have watched quite a few French cleat videos and this is one of the best. Keep up the good work.
That is a very big compliment. thank you
Thanks Mark, another great and informative video, still looking foeward to the costings on the workshop, stay lucky and keep 'em coming
Hey Paul. Seems this is a knock on effect of the build taking longer than I expected. I promise it will come and well before spring .
Dude! You''re a freaky genius for french cleats! I love it! Im going to steal a lot of these ideas and modify them towards my space. Thank you for all your thinking and developing. Your altruism is palpable and the world needs more of it. Earned a subscriber today for sure. =]
Hi drew. you are very welcome. Steal away and make them better. Then show them to me and I can make some of my own. Love this community.
Nice solutions and thank you for sharing. Stay safe, warm, happy and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia
Thank you so much. Much appreciates. Stay safe bud.
A nice glimpse inside the modern cleat system. A lot of nice ideas I haven’t seen.
Thank you very much. Did you mean the Glimpse inside pun. Great channel for the cleats.
Great video! I am redoing my garage shop and am getting ready to build my French cleat wall. You had a lot of great ideas on accessories to make. I can't wait to put some of those ideas to use!
It is so much fun just throwing different holders together. They dont have to be smart. But they can be. Good luck with yours. If you come up with any that I have missed let me know so I can steal the ideas as my own lol.
This has been on my "watch later" for the longest time. I'm *so glad* I watched it just now, before I got my French cleat system quite badly wrong!
Definitely going to buy some boards. Today!
Thank you Nigel. I have popped you the file across.
Hey thanks for the informative video. Have a laser and like your ideas. Always finding more ways to make use of the laser. Best French cleat video I've watched so far. Good job.
Wow, thats really kind. thank you. I feel that I am in the same boat. I am reaching for the laser more and more as I learn what it can do.
Cleat on the bench, genius! Thanks for all this, I am out to get some 3/8" ply now.
Thank you very much.
Cool ideas for sure. Cleat holders are difficult to cut with hand tools or at least I haven't found an efficient way yet. Ideas are most welcome. Glimpse inside does fantastic cleat storage thingies. Ever thought about franchising his stuff and going into production, then we could buy holders from you. LOL. More videos on these subjects please.
That is true Ian. To be honest I would love to be able to sell or supply cleats and such in the UK. When I was researching I didn't find all that much competition. really. Trouble is as good as the laser is, mine is not really cut out for mass production of that kind of scale. I believe he has opted for a CNC due to the ease of producing from a single sheet of ply. I will always give out files if anyone gets a cheap laser and wants to cut these. Mine are a little janky but still get the job done. If you ever want a couple to test I have some of the smaller ones left over, happy to post a few if you email me.
Cheers. I get the scaling up problem for sure.Chris has an amazing set up, years of work into it. I think with the quality of your ideas you could charge for the unique files etc. I would think they would sell very well.
I am loving the channel and your project ideas are interesting. Have you ever considered setting up a hive mind like James Wright has? I will drop you an email after the weekend (off to see the younglings for Christmas- early. As one Christmas is just not enough) LOL. Cheers again.Keep up the good work.@@startmaking1
Thank you so much. I will try to find an email address for you and drop you a line. Do you have an etsy type page that I can take a look at?
@@startmaking1
I will definitely be revisiting this when I do my French cleats.
It's such a good way of just making things with very little planning and stress.
We just got a giant CNC machine at my work that I'll be helping set up, coordinate, etc. I'm already thing about storage options for the area around it, and the rest of the production area. I'm matching in there tomorrow and telling the production manager this is the way I want to store everything. The brackets that you can make and attach to every thing you may make is genius. And our CNC will easily be able to carve a bunch of them out, giving us an additional use for the machine.
The brackets on a CNC will be superb. You can cut them from 12mm where I had to use 6mm and glue together. I envy the CNC community a lot. Good luck.
Thank you! So many great suggestions--want to apply a lot of this for my leather work studio, as well as DIY tools in my basement!
You are very welcome. Thank you for watching.
You’ve inspired me to get organised. So many options for my tiny workshop. I love the cleat on the workbench idea! 👏
Brilliant. Inspiration is my main objective. This is a great thing for small workshops.
OH! The deliciousness of having a wall (even a SINGLE one.)!
It is wierd but when I planned the workshop build in my head I considered windows on every wall and it was only a full wall French cleat system that stopped me. I am glad I stopped. Ive already covered up half the windows I have. Wall storage space is a premium.
Some amazing creations on here. Really thumping my head saying now why didn’t I think of that? All holders are great but the one for the everyday items used and the trash bin holder are excellent. Sub’d and upvoted!
Thank you very much. Great to have you aboard.
Nice to see the shop progressing M8! My 3x3m pop-up gazebo is in the box awaiting the Big Day Opening. Merry Christmas. Take care & stay safe.
Thank you Doug and Merry Xmas to you too. I need one of those gazebos, mine did not survive the winter. Not a surprise.
Love it mate, I’m going to use it when I renovate my garage for sure!
Thank you. It's really fun to experiment with.
They all look great. Fantastic video
Thank you very much.
Brilliant! Wonderful ideas! Thank you very much for sharing.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Hey Mark another absolutely great video so many great ideas I just wish I had room to put up some French cleats I share a shop and I have the middle section so I only have about 20 feet of wall space and there’s a big window right in the middle of it. I need to move some stuff around and clear up wall space and make some French cleats to store my tools you gave me so many great ideas. Thanks for sharing as always
Thank you Jim.
You could build a free standing wall, or even a movable wall on wheels! That's my plan.
Thank you! TH-cam recommended this, even though I wasn't searching.
I am glad that the algorithm put it on your plate but more so that you enjoyed it. I appreciate the comment.
One of the best French cleat videos ever. I've watched it about 5 times to get all the ideas in. The glue cleat holder is epic. Would you be willing to sell your cleat SVG?
Thats really kind. Thank you. I dont sell these as I am still in the early stages of doing this YT thing. I would be happy to email you the file. It is pretty rough. Email me at startmaking2022@gmail.com and I can reply with the attachment.
@@startmaking1 thank you very much.
Put fan closer at height to open creating more of a Venturi effect, sucks/blows out more effectively! Great video and loads of tips!
Thank you. I will give it a shot.
Great ideas as always! If I ever get a workshop that isn’t my conservatory I’ll be sure to use some of these!
Thanks Alex. Workshop with a view is what you have.
Wonderful ideas and your enthusiasm is catchy. enjoyed your video and thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much.
This is gorgeous. I don't imagine I'm going to upgrade my tool storage space from a bunch of cheap steel shelves in my lifetime, but hey, if one of my grandkids gets into woodworking, I'd like to see them build something like this.
I don't actually have any grandkids yet. Life is a work in progress.
Thank you very much. I really like how that comment progressed.
Hi, Mark. Always love your creative talent.
From your past reactions, to a few of my comments, you seem to think
I am man with a great and organized shop. OMG! is That far from the truth! My "work area" is a cluttered mess of tools and home storage, in my small (SMALL) home basement. Well anyway, I was looking around, the other day, and saw I have several bench top machines on commercial, wheeled, metal stands, with either straight ( || ) or slanted ( /\ ) legs.
I suddenly realized how much square feet, of floor they take as well as cubic feet, above the floor. So, now, I need to build some rolling cabinets, to put those tools on. While thinking about that, I realized, I don't have to do the whole project at once. I can build the basic boxes, with wheels, put the tools on them and come back later, to make the drawers and trim (if any). Then, I will have the rolly convenience, which I Really need, along with drawers for tools (later), which I also need.
Well, OK, I need to clean up my house, too.
Just felt the need, to share that, don't know why. 😁✌🖖
It's strange when inspiration takes us. I am still torturing myself about what kind of work bench I want. large all in one or a more mobile set of benches. It wont be right either way as there are so many advantages or disadvantages to each.
One thing I have to make sure of though is that I today after each project/build because if it gets to far along and there is too much mess I wont tackle it and everything will grind to a halt. I suppose making videos is also a different use of a workshop to most people so my priorities are slightly different. Good luck with the tidying.
Whoa! I have A LOT of work to do now. My French cleat wall looks like a French cheap wall compared to this. 😂 Thanks for sharing all the awesome ideas Mark!
Hey Jason. Hope you are well bud. With those 3D skills though, the possibilities are endless.
@15:05 You could put the magnet strip on the front of the lattice box you made for your chisels...then stick the small tools to that!
That would have been a simpler solution . Thank you.
We used the same idea as your assigning each tool to a specific location. We also made it so the most frequently used tools where front and center and the less used tools further away from your work location. We also streamlined other tasks to increase productivity. Preventative maintenance and scheduled replacement of parts that could take longer to complete a task and/or lead to subpar results is another aspect we focused on. It all worked and made jobs easier…. Why I can’t seem to keep up with those same ideas in my garage I have no clue! lol!
Brilliant. I love the attention to detail. After that much I can understand why it is hard to do it for yourself.
another home run great vid and advice
Thats very kind, I really enjoyed making this one.
I was glad that you mentioned where to get the cleats. I was thinking, "great, I do not own, or want to own, a laser cutter." Now, I can order some and get to work.
You could probably stack 4-5 layers of plywood and batch cut them on a bandsaw if you have one
From all accounts he makes some really nice cleat wall accessories. I wish they shipped to the UK
Just freaking brilliant. Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Those bracts are a great idea I'm using them really upped my wall
They are really easy to put on so many things. But the old way works too for some.
Great video, given me some inspiration for changing up my cleat wall….thanks mate!
Very welcome. And thank you
Quite possibly the most thorough overview of a French cleat system in recent memory. Well done.
I'm still using drawers due to lack of wall space, but in the new shop I'll definitely be integrating some sort of wall system. Utilizing your walls just makes sense.
On a side note, does that new XTool live up to the hype? Oh wait, don't answer that. You'll probably be shooting a video. I'll patiently wait. Cheers Mark
Hey bud. As far as the xTool goes I can give you an answer for the content creator or the professional woodworker you are. Both are slightly different. If a professional woodworker can afford it then it is amazing. Really simple to use (even for a person who asked lee how to send him a video clip). Yes I am that inept. As a content creator I was offered it for free if I make 3 videos. I have done 2 and it is a lot to try and get something interesting for. Personally I would negotiate to show it on insta and do one video. And definitely get the filter one way or another. In all seriousness it is super and if you want to pick my brains about the business side of it and what is expected by the supplier I would be more than happy. As for the video and a kind comment as usual, thank you. Much appreciated.
@startmaking1 I bought 2 of their D1 diodes a while back, and they've been relegated to collecting dust. Good machine, just found myself not using them after a period of time. I can see the net benefit of having a more powerful cutter, but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on a larger machine simply because of the over saturation of my local market, and its a big expenditure for personal use only.
Yeah. I made the decision that I wont try to compete on the making front. Over saturated everywhere I think. I will just use the machine to do a few things around the shop and to shop people what someone with no idea about tech can do with it. I would not use a smaller one just because of the fumes alone.
Thank you - I thought my work shop design was clever when I put it together 30 years ago. I added pegboard. I helped a bit but mot that much. I really like your use of French cleats and I know how tough they are. I built a full room width closet and hung every thing on the cleats. I only two and I should have had put in more. for flexibility. My workshop needs an update and If I moved everything from inside the table onto the wall, then moving it around would be easier. I need that garbage bag holder too. I would cut those cleats with my track saw (got it used and it was a demo used by a factory rep). Thanks again for a brilliant video. I can give all my pegboard stuff to my neighbour. I got them really inexpensively at an auction.
Track saw is a great idea for cutting cleat. Way better than the circular saw. It is a really fun and effective way to store stuff. But I have to say, I am making a work bench and there are some storage areas. Not everything needs to be on a cleat. It's whatever works best for you.
Very useful video, thank you.
One thing I do with my Makita batteries is to put a label on each one with a unique number and the date of purchase. This helps me to even up the usage of the batteries and also let's me know if a battery is likely getting to the end of its useful life. It means that I don't end up thrashing the life out of an older battery by putting it on the circular saw and breaking down a sheet of plywood.
Now that, David is a really good bit of advice. I have 4 and no idea how old any one of them is.
Great job explaining your creative ideas. Looking forward to following your channel. Nice to see a creature reply to everyone.
Thank you very much. I admit French cleat is one of my favourite areas of workshop improvement. Maybe not the most useful to some but such a great way of never running out of easyish things to build.
@startmaking if you had left each cleat with both top and bottom edges at a 45 degree angle, you could have then stacked a cleat on top of a cleat on your wall. Also another tip, for the daily common tools, make the holder flat on the bottom so you can take it off the wall and carry it to your job site, and it can sit flat on a work surface.
That is a really good point Tony. The flat bottom is one that I am kicking myself about now. It would be great with a frame of a base to stand it on. But , I am planning a cleat on my bench so it could be ok.
mmm.... not new to french cleats, but this shows the system in a different light.. really love the idea of putting all the day to day stuff in the one tidy box... brilliant, thanks.
P.S hadn't seen the battery holders before either....nice one.
Thank you very much. To be honest I only saw the battery holders as I was filming this. They have been excellent since.
Thank you sir, enjoyed the video, definitely something to consider. You have a really nice shop.
thank you Terry.
Great Vid as always Mark. Thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work sir. 👍👍
Thank you Stewart.
That’s a brilliant upgrade to an already decent system 👍🏻👏🏻
Thank you so much. I love the French cleat system.
Mate, you’re the best thing since sliced bloody bread. First video for me👌😊👍🎸👏
Oh Mark. Thank you, that is so kind.
Really genius. I don't have a laser cuter, but I believe I can make similar brackets with the 3d printer. Also thanks for that leaf blower tip!
Thank you very much. I think you could easily do it that way, I have to say that I have seen some people cut their own from solid wood too since this video. They hold up well too.
A couple of notes: 1) I like the way you store your squares, putting them sideways maximizes the number of things next to each other and is much more practical than putting them flat on the wall
2) The same principle can be used for your saws. A simple board with a few cross cuts can be used to store both your japanese saws and your western saws sideways, again, maximizing the number of them/making space for something else. 3) For handplanes and random other stuff that is more blocky - if you have enough depth space from the wall, consider building a simple open floorstanding shelving unit. The most space for planes is gained by putting them side by side on a flat surface, very much like the rows and rows of molding planes you see in old woodworking shops. Plus they are much more easier to grab and return that way. Any space not used for planes on the shelves can be then used for any other blocky thing you need to keep close - sharpening gear, power tools, bit boxes, the list is endless.
Wow, thank you for such a detailed comment. I love the saw idea and very much plan to implement it on stage 2. I like the plane idea too but I have to decide first which ones need to be close to hand and which ones I have for the fun of it. Thank you for the feedback though. much appreciated.
Totally inspired by your channel/video. I've dusted down my cnc machine and I've designed some French cleats for my soon to be created french cleat system. When I say dusted down, I mean it's not been used, so the design process is taking time 😂
Brilliant. I wish I had a cnc. So much more versatile than a laser I would think. For building especially. Good luck.
@@startmaking1 possibly the same learning curve, but I think start up costs can be less for the cnc. I purchased a secondhand Oozenest 1075 for £200 (including approx £200 of bits/accessories). I started with a small Sainsmart 3020, which is surprisingly capable, but restricted by its size.
I have just had a chat with another maker regarding CNC and am convinced that due to the lack of burning they are leaps and bounds better than the laser.
@startmaking1 I had another go yesterday, and I'm much happier with the results. I had used 'poor-ish' quality 9mm plywood and was getting a bit of tear out around the tip of the 45° cleat. Possibly due to the plywood, feed rate, spindle speed etc, but much better results with better quality 12mm ply. I'll keep testing, but appreciate your feedback 💙
Chris at Glimpse inside is still only shipping in US no UK yet.
That's a shame. I could not find one for the uk. Good opportunity for someone maybe
Another excellent video! Thanks for quite a few great ideas.
Hey. thank you. Much appreciated.
This is really interesting bud. Ive been making five cabinets for my hobby room, the back of which have a rabbit so an overlap between backboard and sides which I'll be cutting a French cleet with to take lots of stress into the sides which have most support I think. Basically your design but cut from the back of the sides with the addition of a lateral 45 piece. I like your cleat ideas bro, thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I hope it works out well for your build.
Thanks for all the great ideas!
More than welcome bud.
