Portland, Oregon mayoral candidate Rene Gonzalez pitches accountability for homeless tents

  • Portland City Commissioner and mayoral candidate Rene Gonzalez wants to change how Multnomah County hands out tents and tarps to the homeless - including stickering County-provided tents and tracking distribution numbers.
"To continue to encourage camping indirectly by distributing tents and tarps is just the wrong message," said Gonzalez.
It's no secret Gonzalez is not a fan of tents and tarps. Shortly after taking office in 2023, he ordered the Portland Fire Bureau, which houses Portland Street Response, to stop handing them out.
Gonzalez has consistently cited fires and other safety concerns.

I totally support Gonzalez' approach and he will get my vote for having the guts to propose sensible rules. We're not helping the homeless by keeping them in an endless cycle of drug addiction, violence, and lawlessness. It's time they are held accountable. Why should we fund the very people who would make our city a garbage dump and a dangerous place? Instead we should offer help combined with tough love and accountability.

The homeless can remove graffiti, clean up (mostly their) garbage, and other tasks to earn taxpayer supplied tents. Just handing them out, then confiscating them during "clean ups," just to hand more out is literally insane and idiotic. You want Portland to become a bustling city that people actually want to visit again? It starts with cleaning it up. Make them take some responsibility for their actions and contribute to the solution instead of just taking from society and demanding more with 0 contributions from themselves.

I get that, but people act like they are incapable of moving to somewhere they can afford. If you can't afford to live here, there are a few dozen other states that might work out better for some people.
Before you come at me, my 3-person family came to Portland 10 years ago with our dog and anything we could fit in a minivan, which we drove across the country from NY. We came here for work. Our situation is changing, and our first thought is that we need to go live somewhere more affordable.
I have experienced homelessness in the PNW. There are a variety of factors at play, but in my view, the biggest factor is people insisting that they have to stay where they are.
I don't have solutions for grown ass men who are a half-decade entrenched in homelessness and calling it "going through a tough time". There is more than enough work available, and Portland has a network of free public showers. There's no excuse for not working at all unless you're 100% disabled.

This is inhumane. I would much rather pay for tents and vulnerable people who need them get them. Even if that means some are used for drugs. Drug users are still human beings and deserve not to be left to the elements. How will families with children sleep together in a tent for only 2 people? A 2 person tent is really a 1 person tent for someone who is 5'6 150 lbs with their stuff. What about if you're a 6'4 280 lb dude? They are homeless, too and they need bigger tents. What about people who just became homeless? How do they get a new tent? I am an avid camper and exposure to the elements eventually makes tents no longer be waterproof or windproof after a while. Especially small cheap ones, not the nice ones from REI. They don't even have access to a washing machine and Nikwax to give a used tent a boost. We need to actually build the detox centers we were promised with measure 110, and hold fentanyl/ meth addicts accountable by forcing them into detox if they do not qualify for a shelter. Not just letting them stay on the street corner slumped over high and checked out. Taking their tents away won't solve that problem. If anything it will encourage more public drug use and squatting in empty homes because they have nowhere to hide. We need to push people toward rehab and provide more affordable housing with some units on a sliding income scale.

The fastest way for the city of Portland to stop tent camping is for the City of Portland to give out motel room vounchers to all they find living in tents on the streets of Portland. Litterally give them 2 months of a clean room to live in and have social service people help them get into medical and social service programs so they can heal and get back to living instead of barely surviving.

Why? They have been providing outreach services but the homeless don't want to use them.

The Ukraninan people are fighting for their lives, their families, and their country. They have made huge sacrifices to defend their nation. All our homeless population wants is to get their next fix and have someone else deal with the consequences. I would give $1000 to Ukraine before I'd give another nickel to a community of drug addicts who will happily ruin the city for our families. Ringtail, you've got your values all mixed up.

@@WillyPDX94 not to mention the clear implications if Ukraine is allowed to fall. No one believes Putin will stop there. And when (not if) he attacks Poland, the USA is under contractual obligation to defend. Meaning we will be directly involved in military ops.
