I worked for an Albanian property manager in New York, and he explained how they make it work. They have a big extended clan, and one of them is the designated bruiser who uses force to drive bums away. Then there are other relatives whose job is bail bondsman for the clan. If a bum shows up, that bum will have a mysterious "accident" and be "persuaded" to leave. If one of the clan has to throw punches and gets arrested, they have a lawyer on retainer. So if Albanians or Macedonians, or Greeks move into these properties, the "homeless" will start to disappear.

If it took a tree trimmer to raise the subject of a homeless person living on his property? Then he didn't really take much interest in his land. I bought a property that came with a fair amount of forest. After about two years and a bit of exploring I found what I call hippies living in the woods. However, the area was rubbish free, areas were set aside for vegetable growing, no weed growing or anything like that. They were just a family that fell into hard times and needed to set down roots. They were intelligent and caring of their family. The land wasn't something I used much, so I let them stay. 6 years later they are still there with no problems. Every month or so I get a massive basket of fresh vegetables, some trout from my stream and a help to maintain my properties main garden when needed. I actually enjoy meeting up with them. Their two children are well educated and polite. So basically they are the perfect neighbours.
We use to have over night car camper in front of our home. We cut down the brushes, trim the lawn coverings and install bright solar spot light. We now have no more car camper near our front yard. I recommend this if you have a camping problem.

They would prove *far more expense* to taxpayers than ignoring homelessness is now costing us. _What will work?_ *Many more affordable housing units made available. *Many more emergency housing options than currently exist. *Sanctioned outdoor camping areas for those who will not agree to inside shelter rules. *Readily available and affordable mental health treatment and drug addiction treatment. While I don't contend that implementing the above would stop ALL homelessness in Portland, I know that these measures would drastic reduce it, and, as a bonus, these ideas would cost LESS to taxpayers than ignoring homelessness has cost us.

When did cops all over the west coast decide that "squatters" "campers" were not trespassing? Time and time again, these uneducated cops call this a "civil matter" so that they do not have to do anything. Trespassing is a crime; vandalism and arson are crimes. Cannot understand why a property owner cannot order anyone off their property-pronto. In many parts of this country, if a person steps foot onto private property, they are rendered unable to take a step back. Sounds tough? Cruel? See if you like having someone in your dry wheat fields who could start a fire; see if you like your livestock stolen or mutilated; how would you like heavy, very expensive machinery vandalized? Same goes for a property owner in the densest city neighborhood. No trespassing. Very simple, cops and judges.
The police were seriously defunded in Portland and told they could not enforce laws. This is the result. They won’t do anything until the mayors office issues written guidance.

Though I do believe that the homeless problem is a situation we need to deal with, I don't believe homeless people should be able to camp out on someone's private property without permission! As a Property Manager I've had to deal with this a couple times over the last 24+ years. My way of dealing with it was to go out immediately and dispose of all items brought onto the property. There is no law saying someone can just come and squat on your property. As the owner of the property or manager for the owners, you have the right to maintain the property and keep it clean. But there is a catch in many jurisdictions. If you let someone camp out on your property for more than 29 days, you now have to go through court procedures and evict the squatter. Which means YOU now have to pay the eviction fees and lawyer fees to get them evicted. So, if this happens to you, deal with it immediately! Also, to protect yourself legally, put up "No Trespassing" signs BEFORE this happens to you. Then no one can say "I didn't know I was on private property"!
This guy is on FB with massive amounts of 1 star reviews against vets who declaw cats and even a 1 star for Home Depot because they sell glue rat traps. He definitely voted for this.
For the life of me, I don't understand why she wasn't removed IMMEDIATELY! This isn't a squatter's case, where the squatter can pretend as though they have a lease and it's up to the courts to decide. Obviously if you have a tent and are living in my backyard, you have zero rights to that and I'd think that any sensible solution would be 1. removing the person right then and there and 2. if you show up again, throwing that person in jail preferably for a long period of time (like a year) so that they're smacked in the face and get the fact that they need to find other options and stealing space from someone's backyard isn't one of those options!

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that when home and rental prices shot up much higher than the general inflation rate, and too little affordable housing is available, homeless increases.
Obviously, ignoring the problem hasn't worked.
Draconian anti-camping laws will only result in courts, prosecutors, public defenders, prison and forced mental commitments. They would prove *far more expense* to taxpayers than ignoring homelessness is now costing us.
_What will work?_
*Many more affordable housing units made available.
*Many more emergency housing options than currently exist.
*Sanctioned outdoor camping areas for those who will not agree to inside shelter rules.
*Readily available and affordable mental health treatment and drug addiction treatment. Job training and placement are also needed.
