For anybody considering a fuel tank and WANT an electric pump on it, if you add a common electrical connector to each of your vehicles that needs diesel (make it the same one as your truck may already have on it), you put a pigtail on the pump with the mating connector. Then, you plug the pump into the vehicle and use its power to run the pump. You never have to worry about charging a battery that stays with the pump, and if you drove the vehicle to the tank, you already know you have power to run the pump. Win-win. (It also makes it harder for somebody to steal diesel from you)

Mike, congrats on getting the larger fuel tank. Just a suggestion… if you have a paint pen, write Friday’s date somewhere on the tank so years from now you’ll be able to recall the date you received the tank and set it up. I started writing dates on things years ago and you’d be surprised how often knowing when you purchased that item comes in handy.

I have for the last 25 years gone to the extra expense of fabricating a base for my tanks so that the bottom was about 3.5 feet up from the ground. This made all fueling gravity fed at high rates w/o need for any pumps and allows me to locate all my filters and water seperators under the tank at convinent visual service levels. Only equipment I need is to have a step ladder available at tank for fuel deliveries and now visual inspections are easier and more likely to prevent/detect problems, I now use double wall tanks eliminating the need for containment which is required in my area for any tank larger than 250 gal. in the event of spills. I cannot overstate the satisfaction I get from using this gravity fueling each time I refuel any equipment. Sight glasses on end have never worked well until I used a glass with a colored float as glass would shortly become clouded and hard to read with diesel residues. I have located the bracket for holding the filler nozzle at upper level that I can reach so that a nozzle leak will never cause a spill. Ray Stormont

Passing along some suggestions for the safey of you, the tank, the equipment, and the environment. 1. Place a simple roof structure over the storage tank to reduce temperature swings and to divert water away from the base. 2. Place a couple crash bollard posts out front of the tank. 3. Gravel can tend to move/displerse under the tank base especially if you will have heavy equipment parked near the base while fueling--add four concrete precast pads one on each corner. 4. Place a sign to identify the type of fuel and flamable to eliminate errors by the fuel contractor, and keep a fire extinguisher close by.

What you should do is put your other fuel tank next to the other tank and that way you have your off-road and you have your regular diesel fuel. Get them both fill it at the same time and that would be easier for you and cut down on running back and forth. That's what I'm thinking. Mike from Oxford, PA. Thank you

I took many a lesson from in my youth. It has paid off immensely. I can still hear their instruction in my head long after they have both passed on. My father didn't talk too much so I pretty much just watched how he did things. On the other hand, my grandfather talked a lot and helped me understand the how and the why of things. Both of them had a very strong work ethic. I was blessed.

If the suction tube for your pump isn't angle cut Mike cut it to a 45 and about an inch off the bottom. You'll never have a problem with water or debris. You may also want to put a filter in line also if it doesn't already have one.

One water block an one particulate filter. I cut the filters open on my machines after a year and they’re spotless and still white. But a single 2 micron filter with a water drain will be sufficient.

I grew 7 Black Locus trees 3 years ago. They are fast growing and they have beautiful fragrant blooms. They will make great shade trees for the chickens in the Summer but allow the sun to come though in the Winter. They are rot resistant when used for posts and the roots send up another tree when one is cut down so you don't have to replant.

Good morning Mike. Nice addition, your wood yard has come a long way. One thing about the manual pump is the overflow spillage, this happens when you’re trying to top off the fuel, because you’re guessing as you come to filling the top of the tank. A solar driven pump has great remote location advantages and electric is more accurate and facilitates topping off more accurately. 😀👍👍👍

Mike get yourself a Racor 500FG with a ten micron filter cartridge as a pre filter and then connect the output of the 500FG to a 2 micron spin on type filter with a sediment / water bowl . Think about using algaecides in the tank along with a sludge/water emulsifier. Diesel engines , especially little ones don’t tolerate water and dirt like the big over the road engines can. This comes from a 40 year relationship with the little 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel in my sailboat. Tank vents can and do admit atmospheric moisture into your tank and then the green critters start a colony in your once clean fuel. I once removed a human arm sized colony from my 30 gallon fuel tank. Not fun !

Nice tank. You will definitely love having fuel local like that. My dad has a tank we both share since we are close geographically. The first one was like yours with a hand crank. Hello! 😊 Rust is your big enemy with tanks. It is good to set them on a concrete pad so that the moisture coming out of the ground doesn't accelerate corrosive activity on the bottom of the tank. Also be careful to keep spillage off the tank when fueling. That ethanol they put in diesel increases corossive activity. Every so often, drain a couple gallons from the bottom. This will remove the water and ethanol that has combined with it. Drain the diesel out of the supply hose after each use. I learned this from past experience. Yes, diesel has up to 10% ethanol in it. I even had an aluminum tank that corroded from the ethanol that goes to the bottom to mix with the water there. It had to be retired. Stainless steel might be the answer but I don't know.

Hey Mike first of all om a Long time viewer of your channel and I really enjoy what you do and how you do it, I Live in Sweden on a small property and I have really learnt a lot from you over the years , for instance I got myself a little 26 horsepower tractor and two ton dump trailer inspired by you:) so keep up the good work 4:19 About ev’s I have to set a few facts straight.
    1. Last year us ev marketshare expanded from 5.9% to 7.6% of total car sales. Source:Kelly blue book
    2. The fact that GM and Ford are pulling back on ev’s is because they aren’t able to produce ev’s profitable. And loses money on every ev… They recoup their profits on ice sales and has to balance their sales…
    3. Tesla the all American company grew its delivery’s by 38% last year.
    4. Tesla model Y was the best selling car of any category in 2023.
So even tough the high interest environment ev’s had a steady growth and it’s going to continue.
However you make some valid points, when it comes to electric trucks and towing I totally agree with your reasoning there is still a ways to go:)
It comes down to usecase and economics a ev her in Sweden would cost about a fourth to a third to run per mile not towing and about half when towing.. so it’s more about how often do you tow and how much is your time worth..
I do agree with you in principle on subsidies, however the oil industry has also been heavily subsidized on a production level for many years…
For my usecase it was cheaper to have an ev because I drove so many miles.. and even on long trips in an ev total driving time is not much more than an hour more on a 8 hour drive worst case.. so for me got an ev for a daily driver and a tractor and dump trailer for all my towing needs… I never tow more than a couple of miles…
So anyway keep up the great content and keep doing what’s best for you:)

Hi Mike. Great investment. Like any investment. You pay a lot up front. Then less labor of carrying fuel & containers. My best friend & late father enjoyed have 2--250 gallon diesel tanks. They had manual nozzles too. The town's maintenance garage fuel tanks were electrically run. Then we had a October storm & knocked out the power for 1 week. The maintenance garage's fuel tanks couldn't work. So. They ask my best friend's father for some diesel fuel & thier give him diesel fuel back. ( I don't know anymore of this story.) I learned that. We have had nearly 16 to 20 inches of snow in the last several days and I have been spending the last three days plowing out the snow with my skidloader. I ran a full tank full of diesel through it and usually that is enough for the winter for me but I finally was able to get to town and pick up a couple of cans of diesel. The only thing that jumped out at me when you and Dean were talking about the pile of locust trees was that somebody doesn't like their chainsaw. Black locust will dull a chain in 2 trees. I have literally seen sparks come off the chain when cutting it. It's like that tree is so heavy in mineral content that there are very hard spots in it and it just KILLS chains. You mentioned leaving brush piles...there is no way that I would have piles of brush anywhere close to a fuel tank. Even though it's diesel, there will still be fumes and nearby brush simply multiplies fire danger. If you do decide to put up a shelter, please make sure that there is plenty of ventilation. I agree that you should install an inline water separator and a filter between the pump and the hose/nozzle. It will potentially help you save thousands in repairs from contamination getting into your equipment fuel tanks.

Mike, enjoy watching your wood stove burn. It seems to work great. Love the upside down burn that it does, which means you are getting the max heat out of it. You must have good stove, draft and good wood for it to burn like that. You’re probably going have very little creosote buildup in your chimney and very little smoke coming out of your chimney. Have a great day!

In some areas of the country, you would be required to have a spill pan to sit that tank in. Things have certainly changed from when my father-in-law used to take his used motor oil and place on the gravel drive to keep the dust down. I work in the EV world producing the "transmissions" and electric motors. The lines haven't started up yet and we keep hearing things may slow down before we even get started. We used to make multispeed transmissions for 2 wheel, all wheel and 4 wheel drive cars and trucks. Not a fan of EV but it's a job. Good video.

Hi Mike and OWTM community. I think EVs are absolutely PART of our future… But will they ever be the answer for everything? Don’t think so!! New technology (EVs, not electricity 😆) always needs time to progress and be adopted. Can’t see it replace my truck for the foreseeable future (trailer towing, range, ease of quick refueling, etc) but it could definitely be perfect as a replacement for my wife’s runabout around town… Will see when the thing dies (2018 with only 50,000 miles) because I don’t see the point of changing it until it’s useful life if up otherwise we haven’t done anything to help the environment!! Have a great Sunday everyone.

“Useful life” that’s what I’m curious about. How long will that be? I have a feeling that an EV’s lifespan will be quite a bit shorter than a ICE vehicle. Once the battery needs changed in what 5-7 years? I think most EV’s will be scrapped. The batteries cost too much to bother changing, people will just lease a new car. This may mean that an EV’s “useful life” is shorter than an ICE vehicle.
I see many vehicles 15-20 years old if not even older. Some of us drive a vehicle until it’s rotted out, rusty. If my truck lasts 4 times longer which type is more environmentally friendly?

We've got a few on the farm, both gas and diesel. Makes a world of difference having a large supply on hand and being able to stock pile while the prices are higher. Pay attention to your filters and add in fuel stabilizer to your fuels, especially in the winter!.
We are over yonder in Canada where it gets -45'C and below and I have yet to have a fuel gelling issue with any of my tanks.
I've bought a couple Trans cube styles off of a rental yard. Built in pump/filter and you can move then really easily with a skid steer or even a crane.

Hi Mike, this is a little off topic but your talk about your love of history brought me round to a video by John @ farmcraft who was building a pool for a customer, which is not very interesting but at the edge of the site were a couple of remnants of buildings plus a wooden building that was falling to bits that were part of a civil war site, also he found a civil war burial site with gravestones marking some of the graves that still had the names of the fallen on them that he uncovered with a strimmer and the landowner told John that he was going to take good care of the site in to the future as a dedication to the history of the site that was lost for many years.

Tip: If you don't fix it so the sun doesn't shine on it - you will get water inside of it. The sun heats the fuel up during the day, which expands it. Then at night it all cools down and shrinks, which creates a vacuum and thus draws outside moisture laden air inside, which condenses and settles to the bottom. On some kind of basis drain off the bottom. Lee

Hi Mike, Another good video. The EV thing is something I'll never use. I'm too old to change😅. I could see where someone like Melissa, who doesn't appear to drive long distances, could utilize one. Mostly short trips and it seems like if there are any long trips, you are usually with her. The other thing is the cost to purchase one😱😱. I have no idea what the cost would be should the time come that the battery/batteries are in need of changing for new---OUCH!! You're right about long trips. Just triple your time when planning a trip😂😂.
I thought you had kind of forgotten or given the idea of getting a tank up for a later date. Funny how a new anything can make a guy or gal smile😊😊. Will you be installing anykind of bollards around the tank? Not necessarily for you, but more for delivery on fuel days. You know very well that it happens all the time. And each time it does the drivers always swear they were far enough from the tank😢😢. Just a suggestion. Like that 1st ding on the truck😢😢.
Were at 0° this morning near Dayton. Wind was howling yesterday as you said. I can go on, but I've rambled enough. Thanks for taking us along. Btw--would a solar pump work or even be feasible in PA. Too much cloud cover in the winter perhaps. See you later, Ron

I got a 520 gallon diesel tank as part of my Y2K preparation plans back in 1999 to have fuel for my trucks if the grid went down. I got a 12volt pump for it and ran a #2 gauge copper wire from the positive battery post in my diesel trucks to a Anderson coupler that I mounted near my t😮railer hitch. The negative wire is short and just grounded to the frame at the rear of the trailer. I can plug it in to pump fuel, or to run my dump trailer, my pressure washing trailer, my 325 gallon lawn maintenance spray trailer or my Morbark brush chipper. The dump trailer and chipper, etc didn't get used that often and batteries don't last like they used to. So for less than the cost of a battery, I put a cable on each truck and tractor. I can also jump off a dead battery in a truck through the Anderson connector at the rear, and I made a jumper cable with 2 Anderson connectors and a short cable with an Anderson connector on one end and regular jumper cable clamps on the other end so i back up to anything and jump it off from the rear Anderson connector.

The technology isn’t all there yet, and our infrastructure for dang sure isn’t there yet to sustain it. It’ll be awhile before you can replace the range, longevity, and reliability of the diesel engine.

Technology won’t improve if you don’t have beta testers in the field, incentives get early adopters on board , this information and feedback is essential for the development or demise of the product . One thing no one mentions is yes a lot of the electric is from coal fired plants however these plants are running at optimal efficiency and temperatures all the time, they have scrubbers and are running at ideal temperatures. Gas or diesel vehicles for personal use get started several times a day,and about the time it gets fully warmed up and it’s emissions are at the lowest and everything is happy, the driver shuts it off and it sits several hours and the cycle repeats. It takes a diesel pickup over half an hour to fully warm up in the winter if it’s driven within 5 minutes of startup,if it’s left idling it won’t warm up at all . A gas car takes 20 minutes plus to get the fluids up to temp and to reach it’s designed operating temperature for engine oil and trans fluid temps. Electric cars are instantly ready to go,no cold enrichment and poor cold mpg and high emissions. They can be set to pre cool and preheat the cabin while charging quietly with no pollution ,chance of Co poisoning ,or inefficient operation . I won’t own one ,but I can see the potential especially for cities and local driving as a second vehicle.

I hobbled together a solar panel setup a few years ago after a big storm took out power for a few days. Upgraded it a bit here and there. Helps when power goes out and can offset costs of running dehumidifiers, air purifiers, fans, sump pumps. Anything that you dont want losing power. You ever have someone stop by wanting to replace windows or your roof. Solar sales fall in the same spot I feel. You may want some work done but you probably dont want to pay what the sales man wants you to pay.

Great to see you get a diesel tank - I need one for my remote property! Speaking of fuel, it’s interesting that with all the complaints about Biden and Democrats when fuel prices were high, where’s the recognition of Biden or Democrats when the fuel prices are down? Perhaps people will realize that a neither a president nor a political party control fuel prices - they are a function of world pricing based on supply, demand, and world geopolitical factors. While it’s true that governments can add taxes, remember those taxes build and repair roads and are invested to create a cleaner world for our children and grandchildren. I’m not a tree hugger nor an environmentalist. I have diesel and gasoline equipment and I don’t generally support EV’s (mainly because they’re not environmentally helpful overall), but I’ve seen enough climate change and toxic land and water in my 60+ years to recognize that our children and grandchildren deserve better.
