Honestly you make some of the best sailing themed videos on TH-cam. Whatever story you’re telling in each of your videos, it’s always enjoyable, humorous, and uplifting.
There are many, many TH-cam sailing channels, but there is only one from you and that is among the few I love watching since a long time. You are authentic and honest, and at times really funny in a wonderful way.
I watched entire video of u because of your honesty with your smile! Your 2 year experience summary actually 7 year experience is greatly appreciated! Do what you love and love what u do! It's not all about the money! Blessings Rog
Sophie, your candor, personality, wit and knowledge makes your Sailing channel beyond the ones we follow. Creativity is the key and you out shine the competition.
I am happy to say I am one of those that made it to the end. I understood very little of it but that was not the point for me. I was watching you describe how you did your job with examples that I understood. I got a better insight into what you do so I an be entertained by your hard work . I am a closet sailor and I come on to you tube to do my sailing through your adventures that you choose to show me. I enjoy your work and I hope you continue to do your job so I can enjoy it. I offer my heartfelt thanks for brightening my otherwise dull day without any yours and other sailing channels . I look forward to your next offering . Thank you
Your edits and quality is head and shoulders above ALL! Your story telling ability, fantastic. The comfort level of your speech and correspondence extremely pleasing. Thank you for the reality check of doing what you do at the level you produce.
Sooooo good to have you back, guys. If you can't make money at least you're building a fantastic "photo album" to go through in your retirement years. Visualize that: you take all the money you're saving spend it in vines and croissants and sit to watch your own vlogs. Sounds like a project! It's amazing to see in your smile the joy you have doing les videôs. Take care of each other and salut!
I usually get a smile out of people who criticize TH-cam content providers regarding "supporting a particular lifestyle." I used to edit back before digital was around. The amount of work & time is huge. Even if you disregard all the work that goes into producing a video & channel; if you, enjoy the video, information, content, etc... why not? Funding a "sailing lifestyle" is no different than people paying, spending mass amounts of $$$ to see a theater movie, a concert, sports teams games, etc. Are they NOT doing the same thing, paying a premium to support the lifestyle the actors, sports figures, performers enjoy from the $$$, whether directly or indirectly? I don't hear this aspect discussed. Keep up the work!
I love Ryan's technical videos, and this one was just as good as his. Not only was it technical, you answered many of the questions I had (but did not want to be rude and actually ask!) You really turned an undesired situation into a positive experience. Thanks to you both for all the entertainment over the years.
As a former photographer I completely agree with your remark about the way mistakes in audio can be much more glaring than video mistakes. Audio is very challenging! Lately I've been experimenting with dynamic microphones to reduce small space reverb. However in a larger garage, a shotgun condenser mic gives more natural voice tones with enough background sound to make it real. Efforts to use lav mics were hot and cold, I find the tone of many lav mics to be harsh and thin. Lav mics can be unreliable, there are more complications with cords, wifi, etc.
Great video! Thanks! I can reiterate that people should definitely not do TH-cam to make money. 90% of channels (probably more like 96%) would be extremely lucky to make even $500 per month. And that’s usually by working at making videos for 20 to 30 hours per week. That’s $6000 per year. Definitely not a living wage. Only do it if you have a passion for editing and making videos. Thanks again. Enjoyed this episode!
As in pretty much everything that involves creativity 10 percent of the people make 90 percent of the money and the other 90% get 10 percent. Thanks for making this as I’ve watched you two for years and love your content.
I really do enjoy your and your editor's editing. The biggest thing that many channels put too little value in is the audio engineering. I have turned off videos and unsubscribed from certain channels for really bad audio engineering in post production even if the content is decent. Also, after watching a bunch of your back catalog I'm really-really enjoying your channel. You'll grow over time for sure. I put your production and content right with some of the best in the space. Some of my other favorite sailing channels are Sailing Zatara, Sailing Ruby Rose, Sailing Nahoa, and Gone with the Wynns. Its the story telling, the honesty, and attention to detail that makes your content exceptional! You could consider spinning off "Ryan's Tech Corner" into its own channel. It is not uncommon for YT-ers to have multiple channels. The narrower you can make the content the better it will monetize too. Ryan should do a series of 60second "shorts" that focus on marine electrical. That would just be awesome! Keep-on-keeping-on
You are one of the 5 sailing channels we watch on a regular basis! We just started our sailing channel 6 months ago & I can relate on the editing! 😆 It's fun though. We are just about to start our adventure so I know it will be different when we stop our land-life. Thanks for being so inspiring! And Sophie, you could totally be a stand-up comedian! -Not that you have time but maybe here & there at a port or two. You could definitely bring in income doing that! Love you guys!
Having struggled to create content worth watching, I have really learned to applaud you and other sailing channels out there that manage to stay consistent. The actual editing I handle well I think but the planning what to film and actually getting good footage of it is a challenge for sure!
Such a great video! After 4 year on TH-cam we have been on the fence about spending less time and focusing more on other sources of income. We love it too much to quite but I might have been wrong in thinking if we just keep at it we will improve enough to make it full-time. You guys rock. Cheers.
I have appreciated your show for the past few years. It was always a dream of mine to have a sailboat, but I realized I didn’t have the mechanical skills necessary here show today was particularly valuable, because I had been thinking about a TH-cam shell for a friend of mine. Ultimately, I decided it was over the top for an 80 year old man in any case you have provided in valuable information about the realities of the life of a presenter.
Your drone: For floatation, build a framework of popsicle sticks and ping pong balls in case of a splashdown. Use Duco Cement or Cyanoacrylate glue, because they are waterproof. The frame can be lashed to the drone with silk thread, kite string, and silk ribbons. A simpler top and bottom frame is better and more aerodynamic. When you splash down, remove the battery and memory cards immediately. Wash everything in distilled water. Don't use heat to force dry. Just bounty towels. Sound editing: If you ever edit on Mac or Windows, use ( audacity ) sound editing. audacity 1.2.6 is for windows. ( sorceforge ) is free.
Just WOW… I appreciate your honesty and transparency in sharing your sailing and TH-cam life SO MUCH Ryan & Sophie…! Thank you for being so awesome. Another home run vid, great content, thanks again.
This was so well done! When I consider producing a channel someday/maybe I imagine the connections it might afford as the real value. Hearing that from such a quality creator means so much. I look forwards to meeting you both in person one of these days.
Fantastically Done! Thank you for sharing. We have just published our 90th video, we work so hard at it and have seen growth as we grow (Filming, editing etc) The time it takes to put it all together is way more than we had expected but we just cant stop! We love to share, produce, and make a new video every week and connecting with our viewers. Great tips and advice! All the best from us. Cheers!⛵
I originally started watching TH-cam because I happened to notice that Uma had Nanaimo (my home town) across her stern and really enjoyed the DIY side of it. That lead me to the "Rabbit Hole". I do really enjoy many different types of channels for many different reason's. Thank You
That was great! Thanks for sharing these thoughts and facts about filmmaking and TH-cam. My channel is small and has changed topics from motorcycles to sailing. I really started because I wanted to share information about the things I was so passionate about, there was a time, a feeding thought...that I could make a living with it, but I found it would quickly kill the reason I started doing it in the first place. Now I'm not as worried about it and only post when I have something I really want to share. Thank you for sharing!
This was a great video, Sophie! Love how you were tackling some of those icky topics and made some good points there in a positive, uplifting and inspiring way. Keep up the great work and I hope you found a new editor by now 👍
Excellent video, Sophie! You inspire us to do better with our channel. What a great bunch of kit and great advice about drones! Good luck finding someone else soon. I can't imagine how I would look for someone, but I am sure there are great folks out there. Heidi
Tremendous video Sophie, thank you! You have a great sense of humour! You’re inspiring all kinds of people to do something that they love to do as well, fabulous!
This is a great service to all captured by the dream of making a living as a TH-camr. Love that you’ve found a more relaxed way to make it work for you. You’re a fantastic story teller, hope you find a new editor soon.
Hi, new subscriber here. I discovered your channel when trying to understand how an autopilot works. Ryan did a great job explaining, so I subscribed. Browsing took me to this video and I loved your explanation, humor and honesty. I said to myself "She's a film maker" before you even mentioned film making. Fantastic job, you guys!
Thank you for such a fantastic video about the bts of a sailing TH-cam channel. We started out because I love telling stories, capturing beautiful footage and sharing experiences people may enjoy. It is sooo much work and as you’ve pointed out, really difficult to make a reasonable income. For most people if you are trying to generate income solely from the videos burnout is inevitable. We’re figuring out our path but definitely appreciate the insight into your journey. ❤
Hi Sophie and Ryan! You have likely already solved your missing editor problem, but I wanted to throw out that 1) I am a professional visual effects producer for feature films, but that's not really important since I have a full-time job, but 2) my son (also Ryan) is just finishing film school and knows Premiere extremely well. He's a very good editor and looking for a work-from-home gig. He'd love to do a sample cut of an episode for you to see if he can delivery what you're looking for! Please reach out if that sounds interesting. We're in Southern California. Oh, he also speaks French very well, as we lived in Provence for four years.
Again….another fantastic video! Thank you for being so open about things. I will be using your links on some new gear! And thank you for the encouragement on having a sailing channel! We just started 2 months ago and like you we love making them!! Your channel is one of THE best out there!
Hey Sophie, I love your channel and sailing channels are my favourite things to watch on TH-cam. I would love to be able to support you, but financially is impossible for me, so just watch all your videos all the way through! Just know your videos bring me great pleasure and being I have spent a lot of time in hospital the last couple of years! Merci ❤Sophie from Switzerland
Obviously, this is the episode of the revealed secrets, so it’s time to confess: Sophie and Ryan, I've been a big fan of yours for years anyway, but after this episode I'm even more so.
Have followed from the beginning. Continue to be impressed with the quality of your productions, breadth of the subjects (repair, refit, nature, travel, good and bad), and persistence. Experience comes from making mistakes...and I am very experienced. Best wishes.
What?!? There are other sailing channels??? I watch you cuz you and Ryan are dear to me! Sophie I miss knowing how you two are doing and where you are going with you are unable to post but rest assured, love your content because of who you both are.
Love you guys and your energy and passion! Thank you for taking the time to create this episode despite the editor issue you mentioned. Thank you for all the content you have created and shared over the years! Your humor and honest approach to every story and experience is a key ingredient to the quality of your productions. Keep following your dreams and stay passionate. Hope we get the chance to see you in Annapolis this year if that is in your plans. Cheers!❤ Ray & Kim SV Nuevo Dia ⛵️
I know myself well enough not to even attempt becoming a creator. I will continue to watch and support others. I give all of you guys tons of credit. I lack patience, so ya i could never nor do I want to. But keep up the good work
Very very good and highly beneficial video! You have helped more people with this video than I'm sure you imagine. In summary, there are TH-camrs and there are entrepreneur's who use TH-cam as one of their tools. But as you say, to think you can spend a few hours making fun videos while you have a ball sailing the world fully paid for by TH-cam is a fantasy and never happens!!
Great video, love all the insights about the gear and the video processing. And yes... there are many many sailing TH-cam channels but you are at the top of my list. Thank you for being authentic and fun.
Great video Sophie. I’m still learning for my channel (not sailing) and got some good tips from you today. The editing takes soooo long and I tried using some editing and graphics people but like you said they have to speak the same language and understand what the message is. I do enjoy the learning process, so thanks for this Vid.
Thx for explaining so much. Now I understand why there is s little glare coming off the water-- polarized lens. And yes indeed, we have some wonderful day sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, but it 's been many decades since you would call the water beautiful.
Thank you so much for this video, Sophie! Iam happy to have you back in this way which I love about your natural Sophie way. I understand that every journey will come to an end. Whatever and wherever we travel. Time, circumstances and ourselve as well as our targets and needs are changing every now and then. The question is what to do after when our dreams came true. Can any new dream beat the old one? Especially when sailing and discovering the nicest places is hard to top. Or when we find out that the world is round and more or less the same where ever we go .... regardless the beautiful colours of the sea. In the final end we all use to get old and need some money aside ... the fear to become homeless when we need extra care is specially in the western world bigger than in the East mentality. My tax consultant told me the other day that I need when I reached 67 years 650.000 Euro to keep my lifstyle another 20 years. So after 87 Iam broke. So I ask myself how Iam able now to keep my lifstyle ... save extra 5000 Euro each month and buy a sailing yacht plus pay every month for the living cost and insurances plus mantainment for the boat? The answer is It impossible until I dont win the Eurojackpot. So whats the solution? Keep your memories from your journey and miss the life on sea and settle down or life your live because it is the only one we know about and f ... our fears ot our western full coverd mentality? I know this is a hard topic and there are only individual solutions. So enjoy what you love and have as long as possible. Iam happy for this chanbel and thank you for all your work and passion to investing. Wishing you well Patricia
I am a sound mixer for video and film. Thank you, thank you, thank you for talking about how important sound is. If any is interested, I would be happy to advise any youtube about sound for free.

Sophie, your videos are very good because you are a very intelligent girl.
And lets face it some people are just good at making videos. Being charasmatic with a cheeky sense of humour seems to work well :-)!
