Sophie, you had me in stitches about the trolls in the comments. You are so real and that's why I watch you guys. You're an absolute gem, and the same in person!
Sophie - it’s one thing to make a video like this in service to helping people that are considering living on a boat to be informed with their eyes wide open, but to make it funny and entertaining… 👏
Thanks for being so honest about the potential pitfalls of cruising and how to avoid them. Frankly, I truly admire you both for how honest you have been with your mistakes, your emotional and mental needs and the other difficulties you have faced. ...and it can't be easy knowing that some meathead in his basement that went camping once when he was 12 now has the expertise to tell you that "you guys are too soft to be sailors and should go back to your regular jobs as quality control testers at the fluffy pillow factory" or something like that. And bonus points for calling BS on the online therapy industry that is borderline malpractice in many cases. I am not a cruiser, but I am a recent retiree, and going from 10 hours a day of "me time" to zero hours has been similarly challenging. Several of your videos about relationship challenges aboard a boat have hit at a time when I was losing it because of 24/7 "us time." Keep telling your stories in the way that you want. I'm here for it. Thanks again. -Rob P.S. If cruising isn't like camping, is it like glamping?
Great video! I have a feeling that you and me are very similar same as Will and Ryan :) ... I totally agree - separate work trips, family trips help a lot, and having one business but with very different roles in it is also the key. And a BIG yes to NOT having plastic dishes or cups on the boat... it's your home (took me a while to explain it to Will :))
Sophie, we thank you and Emily so much for telling the truth about this complex and timely introduction with BetterHelp. We love the opportunity to discuss our inner problem's with our Therapist and with your introductory offer of 1 month free we are excited to start. Much love and say Hi to Ryan, where he maybe.
Thank you so much for your honesty, Sophie! And thanks for presenting it all in such an entertaining, breezily charming way. You are an amazing communicator.
Fantastic video guys, love the "news channel" approach. I love how you aren't afraid to talk about the tough times and real things instead of just the blue seas and white beaches of paradise. Great work guys ❤
Wow, what a great video! I love that you not only provide valuable insights on how to keep your sanity while living on a sailboat with your partner, but also make it funny and entertaining. It's so important to address the potential pitfalls of cruising and how to navigate them. You both deserve admiration for being honest about your mistakes, emotional needs, and the challenges you've faced. Bonne continuation à vous deux! 🌊⛵️
One of the things we really appreciate about your channel is the **HONESTY** and **TRANSPARENCY** of your content. Trolls are gonna troll, but anyone that has actually lived on a boat knows that it's not all bikinis and sundowners. Sophie; you do an admirable job of mixing your charm, beauty, and humour together to tell the truth about your experience. It seems like you don't really take the comments about negativity to heart and I really want to beg you to NEVER let them get you down. We especially appreciated the advice to *TAKE A BREAK*. Full time ANYTHING dulls our senses and reduces the joy that we can derive from life, and planning from the start to cruise for seasons rather than permanently is probably the best advice you can give anyone considering your lifestyle. Keep up the good work!
Your observations are part of a more broad topic: Free yourself and the prison is gone, but so is the comfort. Own your journey and its obstacles are all yours as well.
The best sailing video I've seen in a long time on TH-cam. Thank you Sophie! I love the intro and Emily's 'microphone'! 😅 Bonne continuation à vous deux !
I found that while spending 10 weeks on our boat with my husband and dog, it was more about wanting to throw his 'stuff' overboard more so than him. Small spaces mean that everything needs to be put away when not in use.
Just come across your channel and I absolutely love your funny way of explaining things. Also, appreciate the honesty as I am planning on retiring on a boat in about 2 years but want to obviously make 100% sure that this is what I want and need. Dont have time or money to make a mistake. Keep up the good work, I am sure there are a lot of people like me that need the truth.
My husband and I have a boat which we co-own with my parents. We enjoy the boat during some weekends (by far no all) and for longer vacation, since we have limited time. I can totally relate to everything you say. For us, it’s the cost of maintenance, where we and my parents spent many, many weekends maintaining it. We all enjoy the work, but I can relate to the downs when I would just rent out a boat for the vacation and have a great weekends at a hotel. But then again, I am not a hotel person… On vacation, we love our together time, but I stand up paddle, while my husband is fishing. A routine we keep on most of the nights on the anchor. I can also sooo relate to alertness on the boat, this is definitely something, people who don’t own a boat cannot understand. I am a sound sleeper, but on the boat (I was on boats since I was 6), I can hear during the night wind direction shift. My hubby says I am a dolphin, half of the brain awake, half sleeping. Most people probably won’t appreciate this video, but for me, it’s top 3 sailing Utube videos for sure and I watch a lot. This is also my longest Utube comment ever. Love to both of you, stay exactly the same ❤
I love your honest videos Sophie! We decided to live on land for the winter because of the bills. Heating a boat in norway in this economy got us into debt last year, which we only got out of in october. Luckily I have an off grid cabin which costs the same in a year to heat than it did a month in the marina, even with a dieselheater. I love these thick insulated walls and double glazed windows soo much, lol. Its been -28 C the past weeks where our boat is!! I LOVED living on the water last winter, its so peaceful and beautiful, but heating an uninsulated boat in the nordics is expensive!!
I appreciate your honesty. I often get bored of TH-cam channels that tell too good a story. Life comes with ups and downs. The downs are often not shown
Hallo Sophie and Ryan! Thank you for the clear words. Being on a boat since 8 years, we can relate to your suggestions and second them. We were lucky of being able to implement most of your suggestions beforehand, because my wife and I live and work together since 40 years and are used to be in an intense exchange of thoughts, emotions, dreams etc. You have the right attitude and will succeed whatever you will decide to do! Wish you both happiness and strength!
Sophie this probably will make me sounds less than enlightened but I really enjoy your videos where you cook on board. Having someone on board that enjoys and knows how to make delicious meals is a big “benefit” and may move the distance between the cost and benefits towers a few more clicks. Btw the irony is not lost on me you showed Sailor James in the video. He started his sailing adventure married to a wonderful person. He even had a dog that was pretty cool. He lost both for sailing on TH-cam. In the universe I live in this would be considered a failure. Ryan on the other hand has has a wonderful relationship with a cute French girl, a job that seems to be going in the right direction, gets to eat like king on occasion and has onboard someone that cares about his well being. Oh and he has learned a lot about plumbing. Seems like Ryan won the TH-cam jackpot.
Thank you for this video. Your insight on the relationships on board and your own has hit spot on. We are sailing the world and have just recently started 7 months ago. It has been a dream or ours since we were married and now we are doing it. I particularly appreciate you mentioning have break times and time to yourself while cruising. I think this is so important, plus it is always great getting back together when you are apart, and I really think you grow stronger together when your partner is away. Anyway, I really appreciate you making this video, and all your videos. I have really enjoyed the education.
I have to thank my wife for convincing me that we are “not selling the house to buy a boat”. We are both still encouraged to embark on this adventure, and we are looking to downsize to a smaller house, but we are not giving up land life. Future compromises will be interesting.
I think that’s wise! Unless you have quite a bit of experience of part time cruising, it’s very hard to know what it is exactly that you commit to before you leave the dock. Maybe you’ll be happy that you kept a foot in the housing market, or maybe in a few years you’ll decide to sell the house, but at least you’ll have options :) just my opinion! 😅
Thank you. Very nicely done. Everyone wants to tell how great their lives are but never wants to share the hard parts or cost to get there. Facebook is another source for this dilemma.
Thank you for making a video like this. I already knew that cruising was not all rainbows and butterflies, but it's nice to see a slice of reality. I will check out your website because, even though I have been sailing for over 30 years and have been planning to go cruising about that long, I know that there are gaps in my knowledge. I have always felt that the more you know, the more you know how little you know.
This is an excellent video with great insight gained through doing the hard yards(aka nautical miles!!) and thanks for sharing. I have sent the link to sailing mates of mine who are embarking on this journey in the next while. We have (by chance, got off our yacht for four months each year for hurricane season ..... which was an idea that we did not realise at the time would be so beneficial in so many respects and also makes you so grateful to get back to the yacht after the break! It is also an advantage to have a complimentary skill set that each person brings to the voyage and lifestyle! Sophia ......... you have a wicked sense of humour which really lifts your videos!
Sophie; that was a great episode! Love the Adventure Crews Cameos & input as well!! You All did a great job. It was funny, informative, and entertaining! Bravo!
This was a fantastic piece! I loved how you countered the seriousness with humor. It was fantastic. I am one of those who does not mind seeing the whole story- “warts and all”. I was in the military for a number of years, and trust me, there were a few roommates I very much wanted to punch out- the court martial that would have followed was the only reason I didn’t. 😊. Keep up the great work!
We're in the in-between. My partner has been a liveabaord for 16 or so years now, I've been living aboard for about 10 years (we were boath liveaboards when we met). We're both working - partner goes to the boatyard, I work from home - as in, from my boat. We've been 'floating apart together' like this for 7 or 8 years now. It's hard enough sometimes living aboard when you each have your own boat, even when only sailing during the summer months and living in our home marina when not sailing. Especially now in winter ... We're now selling our boats (one down, one left to go) and saving every € we can to buy an Amel Super Maramu, and we'll be moving in together ... Yikes! 😉 The ASM is a 53ft center cockpit, which means that we'll both have our own cabin and private / personal space. We think each of us having our own cabin greatly enhances our life expectancy 😁 My 2 cents: before you slip the lines and go cruising full time, make sure you've lived aboard for at least a year and have spent a few months in both a warm and colder climate, spending time on the hook and in marinas and see how that goes first. And for Sophie: th-cam.com/video/nHNYDgzKTnI/w-d-xo.html 🤭
Fantastic episode Sophie! I know that your videos are 5% of your life, so it is very refreshing to see someone tell the rest of the story. There are great rewords from your lifestyle, as you said, but also a high cost, so thank you for the honesty about real life. As always I look forward to the next episode. (And Ryan is due for another technical episode too!)
Aaaaa, so funny…we are on a sell the boat day! …I am saying that now when my other half also has had THAT day … today ….together……now after having a bottle of red ……in a crystal glass………we love our boat again……21 yrs on……Happy New Year Guys…thanks for another top year ! 👍🇦🇺🇳🇿🤪
I hear your point about YT sailing vidéos not reflecting reality but do people go on such channel to see “reality”? I don’t think so. They want to dream and escape.
“I totally helped you unblock the shit tank” I almost choked on an old Christmas Almond!! Has to be the funniest one liners I’ve heard in modern boat life. 😂😂😂 thank you for being so funny 😂
I was LOLing when Sophie told Ryan to get out off the water - and we could see the sh!t coming. It also reminded of the Delos episode "Our toilet exploded", so hilarious, like at a literal ROFL level.
Been a while since I’ve watched but this was a much needed subject that needed to be addressed.Even great for couples living on land,I really loved the pies explaining how much time and also how we divide our lives with many different people.Very good choice of subjects to discuss too, you’re a great speaker and very enjoyable and quite entertaining 😊love your accent and facial expressions 😮Also brave to admit problems we personally have or treatments needed to cope with problems.Very good episode with valuable content 👍👍👍😍
Very levelheaded video like always. A lot of good tips and insights that I think are useful for land life as well. Thanks for being so honest and transparent about your feelings towards “yolo” and selling your house. I think the yolo narrative usually hides the downsides and regrets but having this reality check helps people make more sound and well thought of decisions.
Thanks for sharing, Sophie and Ryan. Very insightful and interesting (even for a 45+ male watching sailing channels 😉😉). As we're ready to cast off soon, we're happy some of that wisdom you did not have laid out for you in 2016 is at least now available for us. Much appreciated, really!
Something you may think odd for a Solo Sailor is the importance of having a boat with two heads and Showers Why ? Because - Enertainment - at Anchor you will have Guests on board, and one Toilet Shower just doesn't cut the Mustard. However a Third toilet akmost Never getscused, and it is ok if the second Toilet is a manual flush Seawater only, just for ease ofvrepair and servicing, just remember to do a Spirit Vinegar Soak of all the tubing regularly, to remove the Limescale, though a soak with a nice concentrated Bleach regularly also helps prevent boat smells. Lots of cold beers drunk by guests, ups the footvtraffic to the heads and if inly One heads, you'll get queues. 🤔 Ive got to ask Darrell of Island Packet if a small Day heads at the bottom of the companionway can be squeezed in on the IP 349 as I might try one ofvthose if it can be done. Fingers crossed. 🤔 Bob. 🌟🌟🌟❤
Important topic. Latest here your therapy paid off because thinking and communicating are two different shoes. Thank you guys. Wishing you well. Patricia P.S.: are you on the boot 24? Maybe we can meet for a drink or dinner?
Absolutely wonderful video. 🎉 I’ve been enjoying your videos for some time now. Appreciate you guys and how you’ve helped many would be sailors. As a long time sailor and therapist your comments about that were illuminating. (May I send my partner to you for a consult? ) We are in the southern Chesapeake and sail a Beneteau 411 much like yours I suppose. By the way a very good friend of ours and a wine merchant is visiting Paris right now, renting a place in the 4th arrondismont. Be well and do good.
Separate time is the key. We were married 16 years before we had a holiday together. But I made sure that she had hols. We have had very few apart from when I bought 2 holiday homes. Then we would be in a different one quite often!!. We tried livaboard & after a few months she got on the plane & went home. It did not work for us I really love single handed sailing. She plays golf & has loads of golf hols in UK & abroad. I go sailing for weeks on end. For all that we have had a happy marriage for over 50 years. It is freedom from each other that does the trick. Rarely together long enough to argueNot that we would want to. or ever have.
Hi Sophie Not a sailing related question. I live about 6 hours by train from Paris. Sometime when it is a bit warmer we are planning on taking the TGV into Paris for 3 days. My current plan is to stay at the Tribourg in 3rd Arrondissement to visit an old friend. Will arrive Gare Paris est. Any changes you would suggest. I don't know Paris at all. By the way. I had wanted to do the sailing life for the last 15 years. Now, I think I will look for a place on land to winter rather than a boat to travel the Aegean and Med in. Best, Mark Hutchins
The 3rd arrondissement is lovely, you will have a great time! Some highlights would be "le marché des enfants rouges" , "la terrasse des archives", "Place des Vosges", my absolute favorite coffee shop in the world: "Café Partisan" and so many other small restaurants and cafés. It is a very central neighborhood, and I am sure you'll have a blast!
Merci, Sophie! Très vrai ce que tu as dit, mais sur terre aussi on a les mêmes problèmes. Les maisons aussi ça brise, les taxes de propriété etc… mais garder un pied à terre, est un bon plan. Lâché pas! Cheers!
Absolutely Brilliant Sophie, u have a natural ability to express what u feel, need and want us to contemplate living on a boat. Ur presentation and informative knowledge is top shelf. And I might add, u have matured into a very beautiful, intelligent, strong capable Woman with all that involves. Thanks for being U, Ryan hang onto Sophie with both hands but always share.🤣😍🇦🇺
Well for me, theShe in my Life is my Boat (and I'm still presently Boatless Ugh ) so She gets Pampered and receives lots of tlc . With it all being about the hourney and the Destinations are the Bonus and the Breaks. 80% of a Cruisers time is spent at Anchor Remember? and when I am not on my boat or even don't have a boat, I get Grouchy as a result - it's the Briney in the Blood thing, and not actually insanity, and to get a Firearms Licence in Britain, I had to prove that Im totally Sane - Buzz Kill or Whaaaat? Frankly, a touch of Crazy helps to Confirm just how Sane you are, Crazy like really quick on a Motorbike, or realising that Sailing in the Mediterranean these days, is Stark Raving Bonkers - If you had experienced Sailing it in the 1960's and 1970's when even Ibiza ( apart from the really Dippy Hippies element ) , Italy, Sardinia Greece, Portugal and North Africa were, you'd know what I mean. Then prepping the Boat for a long Crossing, and just getting in the Groove - just like Ryan did on his crossing, and there is so much to think about, there's nothing I'd like more than being Becalmed in the Doldrums for a few weeks ( it can happen, so you need to be prepared for it with a Water maker, a fishing Rod, a few months supply of Food, Cigarettes, plenty of Cold beer and a few crates of good wine, and maybe lots of Audio books to listen to , as Ive pretty much been boycotting the Disgusting Music Industry since the 1970's, as they are at least as bad as Hollywood - Holly Wood iscwhat evil F*kers make their Magic Wands from, hence their choice of name. Being Alone on a boat doesn't make you lonely either. Lonely = you aren't happy with yourself so you are bad company for you. That means you are bad company for others. wherever your boat is, it is surrounded by lots of good company, dolphins Whales, bird life, and Fish, some of which are very tasty as well. It's all a Win for me tbh. Best Wishes. Bob. 🤔🌟🌟🌟❤️
I’m guessing most viewers wanna see just the “Good Things” that they’ll NEVER EXPERIENCE…Personally, I can’t see myself having the patience of spending 24/7 with my Wife of 48 years😜 Good Luck🍀 Continue to Stay Safe and Enjoy 😎
Sailing gypsies like van life gypsies...what could go wrong?? ( Should be difficult even at the best of times..requires lots of patience and then some more, I would guess)
Disclaimer : I freely admit that I'm a seriously Grouchy Old Fart, and being Grouchy is on of the most fun aspects of living long enough to be a Grouchy Old Fart. Other than that, once the Briney gets into Our Blood Thank God there's no way of removing it. Phew, So There. I think that's the third time today I've got that off my Chest . Oh, and at some point it'll sink in just how much Catamarans Hate me, and maybe TH-cam can stop dumping Catamaran Crap on my timeline to stop annoying the crap out of me with it. Wishing Everyone a Wonderful Day, Week, Month, and Year of Fair Winds and Safe Travels. Bob👍🌟🌟🌟❤️
Sophie, you had me in stitches about the trolls in the comments. You are so real and that's why I watch you guys. You're an absolute gem, and the same in person!

So glad you are talking about this as my husband and I are looking to embark on a similar journey.

Great work guys ❤
those "man overboard incidents" should be looked at as training opportunities 😉
🤣🤣🤣
….missed opportunities?❤
Tack Sophie. Lärorikt och underhållande. Kanske säljer mitt hus och köper en billigare lägenhet när det är dax :)

Thank you.

Love your humour Sophie! Love this video. I can totally relate to the ups and downs of cruising!
Loved it. Brilliant! Well pitched.

Yikes! 😉
The ASM is a 53ft center cockpit, which means that we'll both have our own cabin and private / personal space. We think each of us having our own cabin greatly enhances our life expectancy 😁
My 2 cents: before you slip the lines and go cruising full time, make sure you've lived aboard for at least a year and have spent a few months in both a warm and colder climate, spending time on the hook and in marinas and see how that goes first.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the honesty, it really hits home. This is amazing and so needed.
Wow ! Its been 6 yrs since I have commented here ...missed you guys .Happy to have found you ... & Sophie , your the best(You to Ryan') :)
Co-sign ALL of this!
Brilliant!!! 😊
Aaaaa, so funny…we are on a sell the boat day! …I am saying that now when my other half also has had THAT day … today ….together……now after having a bottle of red ……in a crystal glass………we love our boat again……21 yrs on……Happy New Year Guys…thanks for another top year ! 👍🇦🇺🇳🇿🤪
Well done!!
Very well done! Thank you. All the best for the New Year!
Best video guys.....love it!
I hear your point about YT sailing vidéos not reflecting reality but do people go on such channel to see “reality”? I don’t think so. They want to dream and escape.
Unless you are serious about doing it, in which case you probably want it given to you as it is 😊 that’s who this video is for!
Great video! 😂 So true and love Sophie’s humor
FANTASTIC ADVICE SOPHIE . P.S. LOVE RYAN AND SOPHIE SAILING
And I am so happy that there are in fact a lot of 45+ men that can appreciate this kind of content 💙
Great video… thank you
Thanks for this !! Although I am loving ‘camping’ for now…
Happy New Year you lovely people😂❤🎉
Thank you!
most excellent presentation
Love you guy's---- be safe...
Groovy episode. You are always so funny and of course, cute.
The curling iron mic is key!
Whatever you do in life as leisure, when you do it all the time, it will feel like work
Absolutely wonderful video.
Aaaah thanks!!! That means a lot 🥰 (at first I misread “illuminating” for “humiliating” and I almost had a heart attack 😅)
Great video well done. Here's a suggestion for multitask attach the microphone to your wine glass.
I loved the intro :):)
I have a question about intimacy between partners living on a boat permanently... how much does it differ to land life?
Greta video! Great honest message.
Love it! Great info….but you should really try to smile more! 🤪
😇
Separate time is the key. We were married 16 years before we had a holiday together. But I made sure that she had hols. We have had very few apart from when I bought 2 holiday homes. Then we would be in a different one quite often!!. We tried livaboard & after a few months she got on the plane & went home. It did not work for us
I really love single handed sailing. She plays golf & has loads of golf hols in UK & abroad. I go sailing for weeks on end.
For all that we have had a happy marriage for over 50 years. It is freedom from each other that does the trick. Rarely together long enough to argueNot that we would want to.
or ever have.
Thank you Sophie for this honest report. Bravo to you and Ryan.
Hi Sophie
Not a sailing related question.
Best,
Mark Hutchins
One hand for the boat, one hand for the partner!
Bob. 🤔🌟🌟🌟❤️
Oh, the dreaded "smile more" comment.."paf!"
For some reason unknown to me I have not been getting notifications of new content and it appears to have been happening for months
Well played or I mean said! Can Ryan come back now?
😃😃😃😃👍👍👍👍
ROFL, you go girl !!
Sailing gypsies like van life gypsies...what could go wrong?? ( Should be difficult even at the best of times..requires lots of patience and then some more, I would guess)
Isn't it funny how the people who go to therapy, are the kind of people who help other people...
Hmmm, sounds not a lot different than taking care of a loved one in landlocked circumstances.....
Awesome content
Bob👍🌟🌟🌟❤️
Where have you guys disappeared to? Hope all is well!
Y’all don’t live on the boat anymore
